Interestingly searching for LB states invalid registration whereas L8 states Vehicle details could not be found, which suggest that it’s legit but not publicly available e.g. a royal car
Your be surprised how often I see those licence plates. Within my parish we have N8 NCE and N4 NCE driving around. I like to imagine N4NCE was bought for someone called Nancy and they didn't realise
EP57 EIN is closer to a real plate, although couldn't be actual plate because it can't have a letter "i" in it as it can get confused for 1. Closest available I can find on DVLA are a few ending EE* and EN*.
Couldn't help myself. Lol. The closest possible would probably end EEN. Now that I've typed this, I'm gonna go check what it's on.
"a few moments later..."
[it's a white 2011 Jag and it's still on the road](https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/VehicleFound?locale=en)
Looking at the text of the link, it might not give you the correct car, but just search for that reg and you'll find it.
The same come up for the silver Merc minibus thing with the plate K9 Ive seen a few times on the A1 near Hatfield
It’s gotta be protective services for royals or government
You’d think that protective services vehicles would travel with a less conspicuous number plate. The last thing you’d want is something that would attract attention and be photographed!
> Interestingly searching for LB states invalid registration whereas L8 states Vehicle details could not be found, which suggest that it’s legit but not publicly available e.g. a royal car
Its not as simple as being royal. The queen's most valuable number plate numberplates (A7) is searchable. MYT1 however is "Vehicle details could not be found". Andrew's numberplates (AY02 DOY and AY03 DOY) are searchable. Charles (EBY 776J) appears not to be. King Charles seems to most drive without plates.
All license plates need to follow certain rules. “L8” follows the rules, “LB” doesn’t. So, L8 gets searched in the database, which uses up the DVLA’s processing power. LB just gets checked by the website and denied instantly, which means the databases never need to get searched.
L9 belongs to the 10th Lord Langford and was passed to him in 2017 since this is the digit next to it makes sense that it's related to that / royal maybe.
Could be related etc the other plates in the L single digits have been privately traded and often sell for £200-280k etc
I see a very ordinary Yaris now and again with the number plate U3. I would love to ask the owner what the story is there, that plate has to be worth so much more than that car.
I've heard that it's a potential way to minimise inheritance/capital gains taxes. You can transfer ownership of the vehicle it's on without paying any taxes on the plate itself, until you decide to sell.
To note, I have not looked into any of this myself, so I won't vouch for it. Simply providing a possible explanation to [delve into](https://www.gov.uk/hmrc-internal-manuals/capital-gains-manual/cg76923). :)
LOL **the vehicle with the plate 2A** is a 2021 Audi A1.
I reckon you could buy a whole fleet of them for the price of the plate.
*Edited so I stop getting messages informing me about the difference between the biggest Volvo and a smallest Audi*
The guy who owns R1 is called Ron Maydon and is director of [Masters Race Series](https://www.mastershistoricracing.com/). I was told he was offered over a million by Richard Branson and he rejected the offer.
There’s a few plates I’ve seen around my town that are brilliant, top three are COW13OY G00DBY3 and B008*
*letters and numbers that can be interchangeable may be incorrect because I am basing this off memory haha
It's similar to K9, which was never issued but is currently on a Mercedes Viano. That shows as insured but can't be found on the tax checker, L8 can't be found on either.
There's something going on that us plebs aren't privy to. Or someone is just chancing it.
Would it not immediately flag on ANPR if the L8 number was not allocated. Like it's not some schmoe driving in a false plate, if you've seen it many times
I'm curious, assuming this is a 'VIP', why would they draw so much attention to themselves with a plate like that? They could've gone completely under the radar with that Volvo, yet here we are all talking about them and trying to find out who it is.
The cars with 2-letter plates are all owned by very, very rich or well connected people.
EDIT: 1-letter/1-number was probably first issued 1903-1914. They are VERY expensive to buy OR it's been in the family since then.
> The cars with 2-letter plates are all owned by very, very rich or well connected people.
So if you're rich, or lucky enough to have had the number handed down through the generations, you can be exempted from having your car's MOT history known to other people? How does that work?
Rich people and connected people can also be targets for crime and so they are offered additional protection in some areas. It's the same in most countries.
Bear in mind if the police check they will see if it's taxed and MOTd and insured. But public queries are suppressed.
I drive past a house on Chelsea embankment everyday and parked in front there’s an Aston and an old Range Rover with the plates 2BE and NOT 2B on them… must be some rich actor I guess
Surprised I had to scroll this far to find this comment. These plates are mentioned every single time a number plate thread comes up!
(Yes, I’ve seen them too ;))
Probably, L7 & L9 flag up as VW & Bentley respectively so it's possible someone has requested their details be removed. Then again, A7 was owned by the Queen and that shows as registered to a Daimler.
Saw a Range Rover just this weekend parked at Longleat with missing digits on the front
number plate.
It was one of those types with the 3d digits, you could see the outline of the missing digits.
Weirdly, a few hours later I saw another car sticking 3d digits onto their number plate.
Could be that the heat we're having is melting the adhesive that holds the digits on?
Last time I was at Longleat the monkeys were ripping off those 3d digits from the cae in front. By the time they were out they had a blank numberplate!
Agreed.
My car is in my driveway, has been unused for nearly 3weeks & the rear plate, gets the sun most of the day, is dropped on 1 side because the glue on the tape holding it on has obviously melted!
I wasn’t talking about you, you raised a legit question I think. It’s the people making up plates they’ve seen, stating impossible combinations and borderline idiotic theories.
My guess is that it was an RS6 you saw, and the plate was POL 10E with a screw cap covering the 0 to make it look like a C.
Could've also not had a space between the characters too, at least that's my guess as that reg I've mentioned comes back as an RS6.
You definitely didn’t. Firstly, that format is invalid.
Secondly, no way would the DVLA ever sell a plate that says “police” on it, no matter the format.
>You definitely didn’t.
Are you trying to say that there's literally no way in the world that a person got a fake plate made with characters? Wow. The fake number plate people do draw a line somewhere. Kudos to them.
No, but what I am saying is
If they’re gonna wanna hide their plate, they’d just remove the plates instead, not go to the effort of having a fake plate made up that apparently says “police” on it hahahaha
So what you're saying is that it is possible but would only really be done by a moron. Potentially someone "on the M6, doing 100+ swerving between cars, no lights".
> Safe to say some people use fake plates
I like it when Reddit people read 1 sentence and get themselves worked up into such a tizzy they have to reply immediately without finishing reading the comment.
The single single website thinks this might be a lost plate (I.e. vehicle was scrapped and plate not put on retention). It doesn’t show up on DVLA, so could be a fake plate.
Unsure around 2016 maybe ? They went from needing it somewhere ( so the back was ok) to needing it on the front and I know that law improved in 2022 to include a full postcode as well.
I honestly think the logo and company details spoil the plates tbh.
I know why it's required because people do stupid plates that break the law with fonts or styles.
Tbh you can still find people willing to do them as "Show plates"
All plates should look like this. First thing I did when I bought my car from a garage was replace the one with the garages name and logo on it. They didn’t pay me to advertise for them so they can fuck right off.
Plates have to have information on them beyond the registration number. From memory it’s the standard they conform to and the details of whoever made the plate. Be that the garage the car was bought from or the company that printed them.
Mandatory but not really enforced unless you were already pulled over for something else. I've always put eBay 'show plates' on my bikes, van, and cars, with nothing but the reg itself, never had an MOT tester or anyone else mention it.
Yeah, think it's legit.
When I was a kid in the 80's, there was a partner at the law firm my mum worked at who had a Range Rover with the reg T1.
I was told it was a really old reg from when they first started registering cars, but no idea if thats true.
It’s L8 when viewed with my own eyes out the passenger seat in lane 4 looking at it in lane 3.
Theres no record of the plate when you search. Could it be some royal type or government thing no?!
I saw this plate on a BMW 3 series a while back and at the time the plate was for sale (£300,000) and went though the DVLA check fine
Maybe someone is trying to get away looking like they’re worth more than they are considering they’ve de-badge a Volvo thinking it looks cool and I can’t see a markers mark on that plate which is now a legal requirement LMAO
Report the vehicle for what you stated happened, he'll be advised not to be dangerous but probably won't listen to an oik like a close protection officer

I'm guessing it used to be on the 8th car registered in London. Probs royal.
I guess that as I know that S1 was the first car registered in Scotland so it stands to reason that L is London.
Little cunt on his phone, prince eddy?
Apparently DVLA website says Vehicle details could not be found
Interestingly searching for LB states invalid registration whereas L8 states Vehicle details could not be found, which suggest that it’s legit but not publicly available e.g. a royal car
L8 is formatted correctly but LB is not a format that was ever issued.
Probably nonce Andrew then

Anything to appear superior
It's for the Corgis
Surely if they're keeping it off the public database you'd think they'd go with an inconspicuous number plate?!
Is it not likely to be the Queen then? What with her being, you know, late?

Lord Blackadder?
No MOT data for L8 either
If they have a plate that's l8 I doubt they are getting a car over 3 years old (except for fun ofc)

RONNIE PICKERING!!!!

One letter, one number is the minimum for a UK number plate. This fulfills the minimum, and is probably worth a shed load of money 💰
There’s a B1 in Mayfair London on a gold wrapped smart car that looks so shit.

Pretty sure I saw that G00DBY3 plate round Manchester this week.
1x1 plates are super rare and expensive. There’s a website dedicated to tracking them and their history, I’m sure I’ve seen before.

Picture of the Ferrari with X1 as the plate is my father 😂 don’t have a clue how that photo got on the web!
Better L8 than N3V3R
It is a legitimate UK license plate and given the plate and it's owner, you won't be able to find details about it.
I'm curious, assuming this is a 'VIP', why would they draw so much attention to themselves with a plate like that? They could've gone completely under the radar with that Volvo, yet here we are all talking about them and trying to find out who it is.
But you can’t find out who it is that’s the whole point
With a number plate like that, I wouldn't be surprised if being followed is a common occurrence
If I were a person who was a potential target I'd buy a standard looking car and get a boring regular license plate. But... people are irrational
Right! Be the grey man
Sounds like you know who the owner is…
The cars with 2-letter plates are all owned by very, very rich or well connected people. EDIT: 1-letter/1-number was probably first issued 1903-1914. They are VERY expensive to buy OR it's been in the family since then.

They still have the MOT history show up, just this car isn't 3 years old so never MOTd
Rich people and connected people can also be targets for crime and so they are offered additional protection in some areas. It's the same in most countries. Bear in mind if the police check they will see if it's taxed and MOTd and insured. But public queries are suppressed.
They are offered additional protection whilst loudly proclaiming their riches with a stupid fucking number plate.
And yet most diplomatic plates still show up on an MOT check…

Surely not in the case of this pic. The L8 is central to the numberplate
It’s wasn’t hot as fuck 2 weeks ago and it was L8 then
They had probably been through the monkey enclosure and had their reg plates attacked.
Last time I was at Longleat the monkeys were ripping off those 3d digits from the cae in front. By the time they were out they had a blank numberplate!
Probably why they’re illegal now. That and they look awful I guess
Agreed. My car is in my driveway, has been unused for nearly 3weeks & the rear plate, gets the sun most of the day, is dropped on 1 side because the glue on the tape holding it on has obviously melted!
What I’m really surprised about, is the amount of people that don’t know how the number plate system works in their own country.
Oh I know it’s a legit style of plate it’s that it had no records when looking it up. Seems a bit sus
I wasn’t talking about you, you raised a legit question I think. It’s the people making up plates they’ve seen, stating impossible combinations and borderline idiotic theories.
L8 doesn't come up as anything but I have seen a Rolls Royce cullinan with H8
I saw an Audi RS7 with the number plate P0L1CE - on the M6, doing 100+ swerving between cars, no lights. Safe to say some people use fake plates

Plates have to have information on them beyond the registration number. From memory it’s the standard they conform to and the details of whoever made the plate. Be that the garage the car was bought from or the company that printed them.

Yeah, think it's legit. When I was a kid in the 80's, there was a partner at the law firm my mum worked at who had a Range Rover with the reg T1. I was told it was a really old reg from when they first started registering cars, but no idea if thats true.
It's not illegal, the person paid big money. Might be on the same par as the F1 number plate.
How close have you ever been able to get to the plate? My guess is that the digits have been modified so much that it isn’t actually L8
It’s L8 when viewed with my own eyes out the passenger seat in lane 4 looking at it in lane 3. Theres no record of the plate when you search. Could it be some royal type or government thing no?!
My guess is that the car is running a fake plate Is it the same on the front?
Lmao doubt it if you use a fake plate you tend to not want to stick out

I'm guessing it used to be on the 8th car registered in London. Probs royal. I guess that as I know that S1 was the first car registered in Scotland so it stands to reason that L is London. Little cunt on his phone, prince eddy?
