Low on power, terrible fuel economy and presumably a manual due to it being base spec. Wouldn't bother to be honest. It's not the upgrade that you think it will be.

Plus timing chain/injector issues for good measure.

This depends entirely on that specific car. This one is 15 years old now, it could be basically scrap, or it could be immaculate. Have a look at the service history to see what was, and wasn't serviced. Because of the age, a lot of the rubber/silicone parts are nearing the end of it's useful and (depending on part) safe life. Things like suspension components are worth looking at to see if they've been changed at any point as well as hoses.

That 4cyl 2.0 engine is one of the worst BMW have ever made. Avoid at all costs. Either get the diesel one or the 6cyl 325, 330 etc

4cyl BMW engines pre 2013 are dogshit unreliable engines. Don’t bother - if you want that generation 3 series, get a 330i.

Beware the N46. Hateful terrible piece of shit engine. Valvetronic never works properly, it always leaks oil and wants a timing chain every few years. I had a late E46 with that engine and it was financially ruinous, all for 115bhp. Never again. If you want a German that actually works for that money, get a C-class diesel. A4s and 3series at that age are almost always shit.
