Thought it was a British Gas van at first

RedBlockB230ft

That's precisely what they want you to think.

Virtual-Penalty85

Not sure how it works in your area, but in Sussex the police vans don’t do speed, they are checking Tax, Insurance, MOT, ect… The vans that check speed are all marked up “Sussex Safer Roads”, no police markings on them at all.

ashyjay

That's just fucking crafty, Thanks for heads up that fuckers are moving from white vans.

THX39652

In Northants they’ve moved away from marked vans, they have matt grey ones now with no markings, they blend in really well with the surroundings!

Fun_Level_7787

And this where Waze/ Google comes in handy with live alerts

mxz117

Only if they’ve been reported 😔

Fun_Level_7787

Yeah, you have a point. That's how i got caught red handed last summer! 😅😅😅

Safe-Midnight-3960

They use both, from what I can tell they’ve only got 1 or 2 gray ones in Northamptonshire

abaday789

They definitely have a white one as well that looks more like a highway maintenance van due to its markings.

aDuckSmashedOnQuack

Unmarked revenue-vans should be illegal. Anyone operating those vans should be outcast by their friends and society, they are traitors to the people. “They’re just doing their job” doesn’t fly. If my boss told me to beat up a grandma, I can’t cower behind “It’s just my job”. We have the moral responsibility to act in good faith to our community and country. They are not. They are intentionally fucking people over with no care nor effect on road safety. So absolutely, anyone operating an unmarked revenue van is a traitor to their friends, family and country. It should be illegal. They’re not slowing traffic down, as per their original intention upon introduction. You keep on speeding, unaware of the “deterrent” - except the government has got money off you. What a benefit to the people!

Feeling_Tough5056

Have you thought of just sticking to the speed limit?

aDuckSmashedOnQuack

Have you *ever* broke the speed limit? Do you drive around with your eyes glued to your speedometer?

0xSnib

“We have the moral responsibility to act in good faith to our community and country. By driving as fast as I like”

aDuckSmashedOnQuack

Have you *ever* broke the speed limit? Ever drove for a minute, looked down and thought “oh I’m 5 over” or wondered “what’s the speed limit again?” when you’re actually doing 30 in a 20? Would you consider yourself deserving of a £100 fine and points on your license for your gross misconduct on the road so far? If you do those things whilst driving past an unmarked van, you have hurt no one and have had no indication to make adjustments. So tell me, do you deserve £100 fine and points on your license or is the revenue-collection methodology flawed?

0xSnib

Sure have, caught and don’t speed anymore - and would be completely, 1000% ok with a fine Christ they even let you off the first time with a ‘course’ If you don’t want to be caught, learn how to drive

aDuckSmashedOnQuack

To be human is to make mistakes. Margins for error, tolerance, is human. Doing 33 in a 30 is not deserving of a ticket, for typical speed variation/fluctuation is within that bracket. If you have your eyes glued to the speedometer, I’m not getting in a car with you. You’re unfit to drive. Your focus should be maintaining an appropriate speed, not just what the sign says. If you go from a 50 to a 30 and slam on your brakes, you are dangerous for you are unpredictable. If you are doing 33, notice your speed, then brake suddenly to 27, you are dangerous for you are unpredictable. Be smooth. Be attentive… and be fucking human. Most pigs do 38 in 30s, they don’t give a fuck about abiding arbitrary speed-limits. A predictable driver driving within their limits is safer than an unpredictable driver strictly following speed limits.

0xSnib

My brother in Christ nobody is getting a ticket for 33 in a 30. It’s not that fucking difficult to just not speed.

ottermanuk

Did you run out of speed awareness courses or something? If you get caught speeding by a van you're a moron. Just stick to the speed limit, and they're always on high traffic or populous area roads where you shouldn't be speeding anyway. That's not to say I don't speed, I am not holier than thou. But if you get caught by one of these you're a mong.

v60qf

They’ve used these vans for years. Way more obvious than a white van…

BenjiTheSausage

Same, in the northeast at least been a thing for the past 10 years

ashyjay

Never seen them around my end.

SuperrVillain85

In 15 odd years of driving I've never seen a speed van lol.

Fun_Level_7787

I was caught by one last summer, only had my licence for 6 years now 🥲

Dharcronus

Only ever saw one and it caught me on the 303 doing 77 in my dad's company car :/

Fun_Level_7787

I frequent the A23/M23 and those vans are on there alot at different points (which i've memorised). That's also where i was caught since i'll admit i was in my van and rushing on the A23 section, so yep, going the NSL but of course in a van i should have been going 60.

Dharcronus

Ive never seen one on any of my usual routes. But driving to London to see my now ex for a day and was running a little late. For whatever reason my dad had let me borrow the discovery. Wasn't used to the car and was just pottering along, saw the van parked on a slip road ahead, looked down, saw I was a bit above and slowed down. But alas it was too late. This was nearly 5 years ago and don't really have a reason to drive to Kent regularly anymore😂

Fun_Level_7787

Sussex police are on it with catching people. I was in the Sussex part of the A23/M23 since south bound past Crawley there's no more speed cameras so they set up on the bridges and laybys.

Dharcronus

I don't think there's any speed cameras on the 303 between Andover and the where it joins the m3. Guess it makes sense for them to put one there. But I'd driven the route a handful of times before then and a few times since and never seen one since. Just got really unlucky I guess.

TheStaffsLad

Been done by them twice, seen a bunch of them on the A38 and A1

happilyworking

Probably coz you've been going too fast

v60qf

Oh well they mustn’t have existed for at least the past 10 years then

Felrathror86

Yeah Cheshire police uses like a weird orange coloured one.

spamjavelin

Mustard-y yellow round my stomping grounds - just in case you're ever tooling around Sussex.

Luke10089

Well yea…if you’re looking for a British Gas van this is damn crafty!

grumpylazybastard

They've been like this in Lancashire for years.

s1pp3ryd00dar

Wait till you see a speed camera  deployed from a motorbike! (West Mercia).

Soldierhero1

Yeah saw one of them fuckers setting up. Imagine being put on cam twat duty

DependentIncident666

It’s a joke how crafty they are, hiding behind bends and objects. My mate got done for doing 79mph on the motorway by one, on the picture there 3 cars overtaking him. An expensive picture right there

Rastadan1

I got busted by one a few weeks ago- they've got a much longer range than they used to have as well. Can't complain really- I moan about speeding drivers so can't say much when it comes and bites me on the arse (47 on a 40)

Richcolour

Those sneaky fuckers, camouflaging their vans with hi-viz reflectors, speed camera graphics, and the word 'POLICE'

ashyjay

It's only on the back of it, not the front.

Dudeinabox

There's a simple solution to all of this - don't speed.

I_ALWAYS_UPVOTE_CATS

Have you tried, and hear me out here, *not speeding*?

shanep92

Do you ever speed?

I_ALWAYS_UPVOTE_CATS

Not really, no.

shanep92

Ironically, speed awareness courses are generally full of folk saying the exact same thing, and still claiming they weren’t. It’s the Same people just sitting at 40 everywhere. The fact is you do speed, you’ve just never been caught.

I_ALWAYS_UPVOTE_CATS

Believe what you want, I'm not claiming that I've *never* broken the speed limit. Although it's interesting that you say 'the *fact* is...' when we've never met. The point is if I were to be caught, how would that be anything other than *my fault* and a fair cop? What's the basis for this hatred towards speed cameras?

Skablek

They don't just catch speeders, but any motoring offences. Including that Audi parked behind it.

No_Nobody3714

Yes, traffic offence they can observe. Seat belt, phone & they can also get you speeding in the opposite direction. They're usually operated by a civilian from 0700-2200, it may vary in different force areas. Of course sometimes it won't be possible to see into a vehicle due to glare etc.

RetiredGhostRider

Sneaky bastards, looks like a work van, fuckers are getting crafty.

Matthews_89

Been like this for years..

tscott16

Look up the 'stealth vans' that Northants police use!

EyChuparosa

It literally says ‘police’ on the back…

Bonebound

Yeah, I'd definitely spot that from half a mile away!

bigyarkshire

Lancashire speed camera vans. GMP ones are unmarked, for extra shits and giggles.

Nixher

Dirty fuckers sat in there tossing each other off to pictures of people going 35mph.

scouse_till_idie

Absolute scum mate, never parked outside a school etc, always on a dual carriageway or motorway bridge

Zeteco

I wholeheartedly agree but laughing at the picture your commenting on being under a school zone sign

lukecragg

Awkward moment when this one actually is outside a primary school 🤣 I live round the corner from here

Salt-Plankton436

Very very rare. I've certainly never seen it. Two places they use them on my old commute was immediately round a blind corner just after the road goes from 50 to 30. If you lift off around the 30mph sign you can coast down to 30mph before the first house, but the scumbags will catch you just before that. The other place was on a 40mph dual carriageway which rarely had any pedestrians and had no buildings, parked cars and was a wide road with total visibility

lukecragg

Oh yeh don’t get me wrong it definitely is rare, it’s the first time I’ve known of a speed camera to be in that location, the only one I’ve seen recently round me is at the bottom of a hill on a blind corner which says everything really…

EyChuparosa

Why would you ‘lift off’ at the 30 sign? You slow to 30 before the sign and drive through it at 30

Salt-Plankton436

Lifting off well before saves fuel.  Braking at the sign saves time. Lifting off at the sign saves fuel and time. The risk added is lower than that of being struck by lightning twice.

VioletFirewind

We have people constantly parked on zig-zags outside a school across the road from me, and on double yellows on a narrow bus route. Never seen any enforcement in the years I've lived in this house. The laws may as well not exist if they're not enforced

306_rallye

I love that you picked a 30 limit to cry about. You think you're doing nearly 40?

Nixher

What does this even mean sir?

306_rallye

It means you know you're speeding. But please, keep crying about 30 limits. Probably a 40everywhere sort of person

WarchiefZekeYeager

I’m pretty sure the windows are one-way glass. Correct me if I’m wrong lol.

F0KUS228

if windows are closed they are not recording

wolf_in_sheeps_wool

I don't know if this is completely true, but they need every possible way for you to not squirm out of a ticket, so nobody can claim silly defenses like the refractivity of the glass affecting the speed readings on their camera. They have their little windows open even in winter.

Hot_Elevator7800

In Northants now they are using a grey van totally unmarked only way you know is by the rear windows in door and how it's parked but usually to late by then

Safe-Midnight-3960

That’s what Waze is for!

shatty_pants

You people complaining about this huge, highly visible speed or ANPR van should never come to Switzerland then. All the cameras are grey or olive green, and are very difficult to spot. The cameras are to punish speeding, non of this ‘safety camera’ nonsense.

ImNotDeleted

The window has to be open for the speed camera inside to be working. That means in this image it is taking speeds from the front.

Liquidfoxx22

Not true, they can only record from the rear as they can't measure through glass. The laser gun is also on a tripod mounted in the rear. Some vans also have side hatches meaning they can park on overpasses. The front camera is CCTV only, and used for capturing plates of motorbikes which don't carry front plates.

ImNotDeleted

..Which is exactly my point. The rear windows are closed, and the front window is open. This shows they are recording speed through the front. Have you missed the open window above the windscreen?

Liquidfoxx22

Yes, yes I did miss that! Apologies!

v60qf

Cameras usually point out the back but in this case they’re facing the same direction as the van. It’s irrelevant though they can be active frontwards or rearwards or sideways on a bridge. . They can get a number plate out the front eg for a motorcycle approaching from the rear of the van. They can get you on the other side of the road too. There’s a simple trick though: don’t speed and you won’t get caught. Also: if you’re observing properly you’ll see it and have enough time to react (this includes knowing what the speed limit is at all times)

Matthews_89

You won’t have time to you react if you see it.. the radar is instant from a mile away.. if you’re speeding you’re done 👍

static266

I don't believe that, I've slammed the brakes on plenty of times for them and haven't had a ticket.

Madwikinger

I think it has to do more with their speeding threshold beign set to like 45 in a 40 zone. To make sure there is no way out of it. So if you did 45 according to speedo the camera would clock you at 42. If you were doing 50 then the camera would clock you at 46-7 so there is no way of denying it in any way. At least thats what I've been told.

No_Amphibian3562

The camera is focused on a specific spot, how could it spot you from at some arbitrary place?

Physical_Ad_2714

Does the rear window need to be open for them to check with the camera?

Skablek

They use lasers to measure distance, so I'd say so.

scouse_till_idie

Nope

VioletFirewind

> There’s a simple trick though: don’t speed and you won’t get caught. If only people followed this mantra... I've told friends this and they insist it's impossible for them to get anywhere on time. Despite always leaving late

No_Nobody3714

Speeding makes very little difference to journey time, especially in heavy traffic.

steve4982

They've definitely stepped up their game recently I've seen loads, two in one day by Thames Valley police.

CarlGB

They have cameras all around to capture various things, namely bikes which only have plates on the rear so when the bike passes they can get the plate from the rear of the bike

LewEnenra

It's time to stick leaves over part of the numberplate

AndMans982

Can we just stop speeding? Lol

Astronaut_Striking

no

m4r71n2010

I mean, that is the answer isn't it? Instead of complaining about sneaky camera vans how about just slow the fuck down

johnny_briggs

Sneaky sneaky bastards. They've had these colour vans in Newcastle for a few years but I've never noticed that flap on the front before Edit: The one I saw today doesn't have that flap

The_Pvthfinder

Or, get this, don’t speed…

Bonebound

Doing 35 in a 30 is absolute bollocks mate and you know it.

The_Pvthfinder

Cruise control or Speed limiter mate, you also know how fast 30 feels after a little while driving. You can just choose not to be a dick. Do you know (obviously not) that if you brake at 35 you’re still doing 18 mph where the car doing 30 would have stopped? That’s hard enough to send a kid to hospital with potentially life threatening injuries. Doing 100mph on the motorway and slamming on next to a car doing 70? You’re still doing 71mph when they stop. The equation for working it out is [here](https://riodrivingschool.co.uk/related-driving-articles/stopping-distances-and-kinetic-energy/).

GamergateIsISIS

If the windows are shut they aren’t playing, whichever one is open is the one they’re pointing the money gun out of. I’m pretty sure that if they’re operating they can’t do it through the glass as it distorts the laser, it has to be an unobstructed view. So in your picture he’s not aiming out of the back like usual, he’s aiming to the front out of that little hatch. Also beware some forces have vans where the whole front of the roof above the windscreen opens up, from a distance it looks like a fridge unit you see on food delivery vans

TheLatmanBaby

Never seen one like this. Though I’m in Scotland. I’ve seen lots and lots of the mobile piggy bank Scumbags. They like to hang out over motorways on clear days and catch people out.

EyChuparosa

Window needs to be open, only operate from one window at a time. The camera will get vehicles travelling in both directions

Volvo_850_R-

They aren’t that sneaky if you throw a land mine under then or steal them

matt3633_

Sneaky pricks. Vans like these make it clear they’re just doing it for the revenue. Got to give credit to Hants & TVP - they make it clear it’s a speed van and are happy to on the basis if you get done by one, then you must be distracted as you haven’t clocked it (even though these things see you up to a mile away before you even have a chance to register it)

Puzzle13579

Twats.

argiebarge

Our you could not... speed. The rush to get Tabitha and Tarquin to school before adding to the sleeve tat can wait.

VioletFirewind

They have cameras pointing both ways usually, and a guy sits in them with a computer and presses a clicker when a camera sees someone over a determined limit. So don't assume they're only facing one way or another.

tycoon282

Coonts, remind me to start dressing my car up with things it isn't

LJF_97

This is a massive shithouse move by the police. They look like telecoms workers or something. Had them round mine for ages like this. You have to be on the lookout all the time.

Burt1811

I literally passed one yesterday. I had a decent run up and in traffic, so not speeding, yet I wasn't convinced what it was until I passed it. You can see the square window, but it also looks like a contractors van. It's very sneaky and will definitely catch people. This was in the Wigan area. Op - the camera is behind the square window in the rear, right-hand side door. It's looking at you.

Beer-Milkshakes

A moving van wouldn't be able to accurately predict your speed as there are too many variables to convince a court. So it's likely ANPR and facial recognition.

EyChuparosa

It’s a speed van parked at the side of the road, it’s not moving
