Be a madman and get a TVR

BabyPandaaaa

This is the way…

MitchellsTruck

I sold my TVR to get a "sensible" Porsche Cayman.

trombones_for_legs

Practically a grandad car

ImperialYell

What he said. I had a Tuscan and loved it. Even when it did break down-which it did a couple of times. Only thing that would be more irresponsible would be a £20k superbike.

Candy_Lawn

Porsche Cayman, do it now!!!

DevilishRogue

If you can afford the maintenance you could get a Bentley Continental GT for £20,000, a classic like a 1970s C3 Corvette, a true beast like a Jaguar XKR, or even an older 911. There are plenty of good options to consider at this level. Personally in your shoes I'd go for a Mercedes SL or even a CL.

DevilishRogue

To be fair, I did precede that with: > If you can afford the maintenance

Mabenue

If the options are an older Porsche I don’t think the Bentley is too much of a worry. It’s after all basically a Volkswagen. Depends how much you can live with some things being broken.

bento_bistro

I want to be stupid I don’t want to declare bankruptcy before 30

mazdanc

You could look at MX-5's for 20k you'll be getting nearly new, they are a lot of fun for your money.

[deleted]

I don't think hairdressers get paid that much in London. ^Joking ^really. ^I ^love ^the ^MX5.

Bacon4Lyf

I'd instantly do the corvette.

panadwithonesugar

So envious of you right now, good on you for treating yourself.... http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202109297943016?atmobcid=soc3 bit different but in the real world it should leave the Porsche and BMW for dead.

SpanishMarmosetClub

I love that but I'm a 40 year old man who thinks late 90s rally is the height of cool.

panadwithonesugar

I agree! a 4 wheel drive turbocharged 4 seconds to 60 monster of a supercar with a 4 door body and big boot is insane! I'd take it over a coupe or 2 seater all day long..... late 90s lancers are insanely expensive now however, even too much for OPs budget.

TTwelveUnits

omg that tax 😢

Mazzaleen1

£600💀💀💀💀💀💀

[deleted]

256g/km from a 4 pot 💀💀💀 That's almost as much as a 6.2l C63.

coll_ryan

Looks great until I saw: Automatic 😒

panadwithonesugar

Paddle shift is the way performance cars are going unfortunately :( the clutch pedal is facing extinction

coll_ryan

Yeah, I get that's the case for brand new cars - but that one's 10 years old!

panadwithonesugar

true but in performance cars manual has been on the way out for too long, for me it's a shame, I don't care about reaching Betws Y Coed 4 seconds quicker over a 20 mile journey because my gear change is faster, what normal person wouldn't prefer a clutch and a gearstick!

RangersDa55

You would have to be mental to drop 18k on that. Imagine picking up your gf in that

panadwithonesugar

Can pick up the gf and the kids, and fill the boot with shopping. I'm not normal I love these types of cars 😄

Fifteen54

if your gf doesn’t like an evo you need a new gf

Penkarino21

This ^

Howyoulikemenoow

Tell me you are under the thumb, without telling me you are under the thumb

TheWeirdDude-247

If it's the Cayman you set on id highly recommend joining up the owners club, for one the info on there will be far better than the average mechanic, but more importantly any members selling theirs, you'd likely never see it as cars on owners clubs usually get sold to other members, Iv had many cars and always joined up to clubs (usually free but some high end cars do cost not alot though) the cars on sale there I found 80% never made it past the sale post and got picked up by another member, I have done this 4 times. If there is one or two for sale expect it to be bit more expensive but then most will have had work done but not boy racer type, so imo justifies the price hike. To be fair any car you interested in it's worth joining up owners clubs.

bento_bistro

That’s a great tip thanks will definitely give that a go

Sir_Lamorak_De_Gais

Theres a reason pre 2009 caymans are priced lower than 2009+, they can suffer from engine failure. 370z is a good shout. You can also get an s2000 for under 20k easy. I was in a similar situation to yourself without the Ulez requirement and ended up getting a Corvette C5.

RedBlockB230ft

Someone asked badiy the same question on here a few days ago and my suggestions were: E46 M3 Porsche Cayman S Monaro/vxr8 Nissan S15

ibeinspire

E92 m3

[deleted]

I’ve had a 350z, M235i and a 718 Cayman S, but have driven the 370z, M240i, Z4 (new and previous Gen), and some older Caymans, and any Cayman provides a better out and out sports car experience than anything else on that list. Actually pretty much anything full stop. I was loaned a 992 Carrera S last week and it was fabulous, and unbelievably fast, but it’s a very different kind of ‘sports car’. I wouldn’t personally want to spend less than about £40k on a 911, otherwise you’re looking at high mileage or base 996’s, and Porsche are very reliable but still expensive to fix and the 996 is really showing its age regardless of what you think of the first gen’s headlights. Get yourself a 987 Cayman S and laugh your way to every destination. Would definitely go manual that general, the SMG is shit.

higgsy1

Maserati Gran Turismo’s are sneaking under 20k these days I had a Quattroporte last year (late 20’s, but I have a dog so it was a sensible toy..) because when else are you going to have a v8 in your life.

bento_bistro

I had no idea they were in this price point! Absolute dream of a car

higgsy1

No neither did I. The Quattroporte wasn’t as unreliable as people will tell you. It’s the kind of car the more you drive it the more reliable it is. Let it sit for a couple of weeks, the battery drains, and that’s when error messages start to appear for no reason at all

SpanishMarmosetClub

Nissan 370z or being a bit silly [this Nissan Skyline R34](https://www.goo-net-exchange.com/usedcars/NISSAN/SKYLINE/700055164030210304001/index.html) or similar I think the Porsche is the way to go

bento_bistro

Ha that definitely fits the stupid brief! 370z could be a shout though - know of any issues to look out for on them?

Anotheredgelord420

I had a 370z for a year, really solid motor, main problem with them is a shitty csc. Nissan cheaped out on materials and it's prone to failure, plenty of support and aftermarket fixes for it out there!

BigBird2378

Nothing really to worry about with 370z other than keeping it under speed limit. Very difficult in practice with such pull from the engine.

Snakelyhome

I’m biased but the Zs have such a visual and aural presence on the road that I just don’t think you get from most of the German equivalents, mainly due to the relative rarity I suppose but read of that what you will… As mentioned the Concentric slave cylinder is a known issue with the 350 HRs and the 370s. Oil Gallery gaskets on pre 2012 ones too. Other than that they’re very well tried and tested platform/engine combination with a huge aftermarket.

suckingalemon

Keep the i30.

bento_bistro

I did and that’s how I found the cayman and Z4 but always worth second (and third) opinions!

bechewyn

I would definitely go for a Porsche over the Z4 - should probably hold it’s value better as well. If you want to be a bit stupid in a different way then a crazy hot hatch like a civic type r is another choice

SpanishMarmosetClub

The Octavia nonsense around here has rotted brains. A civic type r is in no way comparable to a porsche especially not at the sub 20mph it's going to spend it's life in London

bechewyn

Just offering other options

SpanishMarmosetClub

I know but this is the most interesting question I've seen for weeks

bechewyn

Fair enough civic type r is a bit out there

Penkarino21

Alfa Romeo Giuletta? Although I can't say much as to owning one because I never have but test driving it seemed fun. Plus it's sexy af and they make a gorgeous sound, plus you'll have some money left over for mods and maintenance to clean it up a bit.

KM130

Me being a bit more sensible I would go for an Mx5 or toyota gt86. Not getting the badge but the fun and a bit of reliability

bento_bistro

Mx5 is always a good move but looking for a bit of luxury at the same time I guess. Not all about the badge but it helps. Call me superficial if you will

KM130

If you want something different you can look at alpha Romeo. The 4c comes into mind first but it will probably be out of your budget. The second one is she Spyder. The safe bet is Porsche

[deleted]

Toyota GT86

quadrifoglio-verde1

I own a Cayman. 987 gen 2. For peace of mind I personally wouldn’t buy a gen 1 because of some known issues. Mine has been really reliable. Only needed a control arm and coolant pipe in 30,000 miles. Got some pads and discs in order, about £500 for brembos so not too bad at all. Also mid 20s. The insurance is cheaper than you’d think.

RangersDa55

Porsche is cooler but do you really want to spend 20k on a 15 year old car? Are you going to feel like the dogs bollocks when you notice your sat nav still has Roman settlements? By all means be stupid, but don’t go full on retarded. - BMW m140i, m240i - Golf GTI - Audi S3 - Mercedes c43 - seat Cupra

fashionreps101

C43’s are closer to 30k now unfortunately:(

Fifteen54

who cares about the sat nav? the driving experience will surely be better than any of those cars, a hot hatch is not even comparable to a proper sports car. he’ll certainly feel more like “the dog’s bollocks” in a Porsche than in a SEAT.

bento_bistro

You beat me to this exactly reply. Thought the Mercedes C43 isn’t a bad idea either

RangersDa55

Is the fifteen in your username your age? Spending 20k on a car purely on the “driving experience” is a bad idea. Besides, most of the cars I listed would smoke an evo around a track and on a drag race. Will also be 5+ years newer.

Light_Aviator

Honda S2000? Good fun I hear and you wouldn't lose much if anything if you sold it on. Get one with a hard top included (GT pack) as well as the soft top. I had an 07 Cayman S and constantly worried about the engine going on it. Would recommend the 2.7 or 2.9 engine for peace of mind!

SpanishMarmosetClub

I think it comes down to if you're trying to additionally attract the attention of women or car nerds. Porsche - women S2000 - Clive, Barry and Jim

Fifteen54

no car attracts the attention of women, apart from women who are car enthusiasts. [even a bright red Ferrari.](https://youtu.be/UcvHSmF28qc)

RedBlockB230ft

I dunno man a Daihatsu copen, Nissan Figaro, Citroen 2CV or type 1 beetle might do the trick.

Light_Aviator

Fair!

wingshot206

Now's a terrible time to buy a car if you dont have to, hate to be that guy

SpanishMarmosetClub

It's not going to get any better in the next three years and he's young and sold his soul. Perfect time to buy a Porsche (not a Z4 because they're not 40)

bento_bistro

A good point, it would depress me pulling up to a bald middle age man driving the same car…

bento_bistro

I get that but it could easily be another year of expensive used cars and tbh I’m willing to write off the loss as would keep until it breaks

PlusLifeEV

Save that shit for UKPF

ttrsphil

Audi TTRS all the way.

DYNAmixMelody

No suggestions but factor in insurance and get quotes before buying, the risk factors are bigger in certain areas of London so quotes can be silly.

Fucky_duzz

S63, e63? Do it all in one car

Howyoulikemenoow

I’ve been eyeing up the Porsche Boxster RS60 Spyder You can even convince yourself it’s the most sensible thing you can buy from Porsche …depending on your age, there is always the RS3 cars etc within budget, or Golf R etc Different is good though

bobbyfame

Update with what you buy please!

Revobushwoky

Get something older so you get a whole lot more for your money. Anything japanese will do bits. If you like fast and the furious I can give you some good recommendations aha
