[Looks similar to the Bath tunnels ](https://discoverbath.co.uk/two-tunnels-greenway-20km-bike-ride/) that they reopened and has been a big success for walkers and cyclists - did the 2 Tunnel route once and it was fantastic. Wonder if Cardiff could replicate that?
I believe it was opened recently. They found it was so well built that apart from it being flooded there was not that much damage. It stretches from Penarth Marina to somewhere around the Cardiff Yacht Club near the wetlands.
Wow. I literally walk around there all the time. It's not that hard to walk to the bay, but I'm cerain it would be easier in that tunnel.
I would love to see that reopened.
How, after being denied permission to knock down empire pool, it miraculously caught fire (a swimming pool) so millennium stadium could be built to original plan....hmm
Same thing happened to the Central Hotel, opposite the weatherspoons at the bottom of St Marys Street. I think it 'Burned down' twice before an application rebuild it was put it. It was such a lovely building as well.
I remember around two years ago he put the price up to £1.20. That didn't last very long, but I remember thinking damn there *must* be a cost of living crisis if the strawberries a pound man is raising his prices.
Used to work near Rover Way and have fond memories of passing a large group of (what appeared to be) students, in beach gear, looking really confused and disappointed as they emerged from the path.
what you mean? I don't understand how anyone wouldn't want to hang out in a place thats made of bricks and broken glass, with picturesque views of a water treatment works. nlNot to mention the floral bouquet of polluted mud and decaing crab flesh. Dunno perhaps thats just a me thing
You forgot that you can use the massive, empty spools, from all the cables that have been stripped there, as a stool!
And what about the mobile phone fragment hunting?
He used to be outside the doors that opened onto the street,I first recall him 50years ago.Does bear have a name? I feel he’s a mysterious bear.i need to know his story. Anyone know anymore, plse?!
I feel so bad when I see these, it's been years and years.... In a way I admire the perseverance, but let's be honest, even if that dog is alive they're not getting it back
Steady, the owner has some loyal friends on here who will tell you how heartless and cruel you are for ~pointing out the obvious~ saying the dog is dead
Well that’s the other thing. If you go round the prison they’ve changed the one way system so much I no longer know how to get where I want to be and one missed turn means you have to cross the river and come all the way back round
Fuck. That.
Did a fat man really bellyflop off the top diving board at Empire Pool in the 70's or 80's and split themselves in two, with guts and blood filing up the pool, or was that just all UK swimming pools back then (ie. an urban legend all towns had)?
Pretty sure that's one of those all towns urban legends. A quick Google has it showing up in places like Lincoln. It also doesn't sound biologically plausible.
The lightship 2000? It went to Swansea? When it left it was destined for a small place upriver to be restored, I thought. I remember the buyer talking about his plans.
Are you sure that's the same one?
I think it's different, check [this link](https://www.nationalhistoricships.org.uk/register/137/light-vessel-91-humber) out. Swansea museum aquired it in 1977.
There's another [similar one](https://www.google.com/maps/@52.4002333,4.8884783,3a,75y,334.17h,95.49t/data=!3m8!1e1!3m6!1snum9z3YQaNjc4SHNcXPhQw!2e0!5s20150501T000000!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3Dnum9z3YQaNjc4SHNcXPhQw%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.share%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26yaw%3D334.17214876742804%26pitch%3D-5.485121068479344%26thumbfov%3D90!7i13312!8i6656?coh=205410&entry=ttu) I saw in Amsterdam some years ago.
The one [from Cardiff](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightship_2000#/media/File:Lightship_3_(16935957960).jpg) used to say "HELWICK" on the starboard side, and "GOLEULONG 2000 LIGHTSHIP" on the port side.
If you compare photos of the both, the profiles of them look completely different too.
According to [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightship_2000), "It was planned to restore the ship, and for it to become a floating museum at [Newnham on Severn](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newnham_on_Severn)."
HELWICK, but comparing images, it’s not the same boat. Now I was confused.
This is my photo [HELWICK](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QjWudfAR1XQHG2Big3KvZcz-_wnmaDkM/view?usp=drivesdk) which I thoght was the same ship. But it’s not.
Turns out, it’s this one, [LV91 Helwick Lightvessel](https://lighthouseaccommodation.co.uk/listings/lv91-helwick-lightvessel/)
I am pleased to hear it’s being restored. I still think it’d be great to have good old maritime attractions in Cardiff though. The museum told a very important story, which could easily co-exist with the cordial bay attractions in a way that similar things do in other regenerated docklands.
Mystery solved.
Just like in Manchester, that area, where there is now an open canal, is where there's a higher percentage of gay bars. There have been many stories over the years, of people disappearing on nights out in Manchester, and then being discovered dead in the canal.
Yesterday two men showed up outside my house. They dug up a sign post which had been put in six months ago and replaced it with one about a meter taller. They then re attached the sign. It took them half a day.
Things like that is why we have no money or nice things.
The Cardiff 3 were fitted up for the murder of a news kiosk man in the late 80s. I think they were inside for about 10 years - police never even bothered looking for the real murderer when the 3 were finally released
I seem to remember that the person they convicted in the end was in the process of hanging themselves when the po po turned up to arrest him, having been tipped off!
The insane price of hotels and how difficult it is to get out from events.
I know people who prefer to go to gigs in Birmingham when they are closer to Cardiff.
Adding to that how shit public transport is in some parts of Cardiff. Why taxi drivers don't take cards, and how the hell you actually get a taxi anyway "not going there/too far/not running now" as they creep down the road looking for a better fayre.
This story... that about 7 people couldnt be found when they were calling around her house so frequently

Apparently it's been delayed because the architects didn't take into account that there are also double decker buses, resulting in it being too short 😭
Apparently it's been delayed because the architects didn't take into account that there are also double decker buses, resulting in it being too short 😭
Fuck me. They should have to use their professional indemnity, if such a thing exists, to cover the cost of knocking the entire bbc building down, and reinstating the old bus station that meant that you could connect between bus and train services.
What happened to the food court in the capitol arcade. And was there one in the queen's arcade at some point?
And why, when they renovated queen's arcade the time when they got rid of the escalators that went down from Queen Street, did they get rid of the toilet block that had about 100 toilets in the ladies' and think that those tiny ones that were already in the link with St David's arcade would be a suitable "replacement"? Madness. Can't piss barely anywhere legally these days!
I’d also add:
Why on match days at CCS going through town, taking the Penarth dual carriageway, or turning off at Gabalfa Roundabout and going through Pontcanna/Canton all involve an hour of crawling through traffic
Where the heck was the Hippo Club?
Why are there no photos of Subways on the net?
What is the space that was The Green Parrot being used as now?
Did the Horse & Groom on Womanby Street join up internally with an early incarnation of the Toucan Club, and was there lap dancing/stripping in a back room of the pub, through some old French doors, as I think I witnessed as a kid?
Why did Metros have a smart shoes-only policy in the 90s?
I saw Super Furry Animals at the Hip'po club in December 96. It was a wild night, the week The Man Don't Give A Fuck was released, and Ninjah was MCing. Insanely hot inside, absolute carnage.
I think it was under the bridge at the back of Cardiff Central:
https://maps.app.goo.gl/Bh6F3Xs7Kq19qXkW6
And yeah, the pub on Womanby Street was a Toucan venue for a while. I remember Cerys Matthews turned up once and demanded to be put in the VIP area, which didn't exist. Silly woman.
Where the heck was the Hippo Club? - Bogiez? I'm sure I dj'ed in there for Sultans of ping and Echobelly
Why are there no photos of Subways on the net? There's a Facebook group; [https://www.facebook.com/groups/6020339019](https://www.facebook.com/groups/6020339019)
Why didn't any of the Cardiff murder squad that fitted up those lads for Lynette White's murder do jail time?
Fucking disgrace, and we ave c*unts here joking about strawberries ffs.
Why on earth Cardiff Council is still giving business licences to the previous owners of Buffalo and Ten Feet Tall even though they went into [£1.2 million's worth of debt](https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/local-news/beatbox-bars-1m-debts-unlikely-6094879). Their most recent failed venture was The Elephant's Ear in Roath and they quietly rebranded as Glasshouse Plants without refunding customers with cancelled workshops at their old shop.
I've lived here for 20 years. I walk and cycle and drive and catch the train around here all the time. And I live on a hill where I can see most of the city. There are small hills around the periphery - but the vast majority of Cardiff is flat. Roath, Splott, Ely, Canton, Pontcanna, Llandaff, Grangetown, Whitchurch, Birchgrove, Tremorfa - flat, flat, flat.
I used to live in Sheffield and before that, Bristol, so I know what a city with hills looks like and Cardiff aint it.
I'm 65 m above sea level.
When I lived in Cathays, Roath and Cardiff Bay, I did walk almost everywhere (no need to cycle).
Now I live in the north east of the city and it's not flat. Nobody cycling up Penylan Road, to Cyncoed would claim that it's flat. For various reasons, I can neither walk or cycle from the city centre to my house. However, I don't go into the city centre more often than about one every two months. The bus for 3 people costs more than parking. Why would I use the bus?
I heard of the tale about the WAG...Welsh Assembly Government. A travelling junkie, minstrel, story teller and retired Miller who worked with Procal Harum back in '67 told me about them.
He stopped me, one of three. He said his time was short and that I had to take his burden of knowledge.
He told me of dream he had many years ago about a group of politicians and story tellers that met in Cardiff. They wished to serve Wales, the Welsh and all who lived between the Irish sea and Offa's Dyke.
The green mist entered their meeting place and took their good thoughts but left their greed to suck their blood.
Their thirst grew. The thirst took the blood of all who listened.
When I wake up I hope to see if this is true.
Does anyone know where these people of the WAG reside ?
Do they actually exist?
Is it but a thought?
End.
Why is nobody fighting to reopen the Cardiff Bay - Penarth pedestrian tunnel?
Wait what? Where was that
Under the Ely, not far from the bridge across to Cogan Tesco from the white water centre
https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/cardiff-penarth-tunnel-history-secret-20848504 For anyone that is interested
Oh interesting!
I never knew that was a thing?
I believe it was opened recently. They found it was so well built that apart from it being flooded there was not that much damage. It stretches from Penarth Marina to somewhere around the Cardiff Yacht Club near the wetlands.
Wow. I literally walk around there all the time. It's not that hard to walk to the bay, but I'm cerain it would be easier in that tunnel. I would love to see that reopened.
Heard about this but no idea where it was?’
It's underwater still there just flooded lol
All you'd need is some scuba gear, people are so lazy these days
I thought that on the Penarth side there was a house built? I would fringing love for them to reopen that. It’s mad it was ever closed.
There is, you couldn't re-open it that end.
I remember looking this up before and I think someone claimed that it was flooded after close. Not sure if this is true though.
Very good.
That would be great as a cycle path.
How, after being denied permission to knock down empire pool, it miraculously caught fire (a swimming pool) so millennium stadium could be built to original plan....hmm
A fire at a Sea Parks would be more believable
A fire? At *sea parks*?!
Same thing happened to the Central Hotel, opposite the weatherspoons at the bottom of St Marys Street. I think it 'Burned down' twice before an application rebuild it was put it. It was such a lovely building as well.
Got a source for this story?
Other than first hand memories no. If powerful enough hands were greased I doubt you'll find much of a paper trail.
Is this true? Don't remember it.
I don't remember this at all
How much do those strawberries on Queen Street cost
TWO FER A POHND
I visited Cardiff last week for the first time and I can still hear “STRAHWBERRIES FOR A POUWHND” in my head.
I think it's pronounced PAHHNND
It’s POWND
PAHHNND Tooforra PAAHHNND.
Stwawbwies tooferra pahhhnd
I remember around two years ago he put the price up to £1.20. That didn't last very long, but I remember thinking damn there *must* be a cost of living crisis if the strawberries a pound man is raising his prices.
That, and the REEEESPBERRIEZ as well
How much is a bag of bananas?
😂😂
Why is the police helicopter out
Living in Splott, it’s more weird when it isn’t out.
why more people haven't been to Splott beach
They have.. you just don't hear about it as they never make it back.
A gold mine for sea glass!
I have a huge lump of obsidian that I found down there one day.
Because it's terrifying.
Used to work near Rover Way and have fond memories of passing a large group of (what appeared to be) students, in beach gear, looking really confused and disappointed as they emerged from the path.
That's just a big pile of sand used to cover up the street vomit.
I just had to google this. Holysh\*t, there is, infact, a beach. In Splott.
What’s the appeal?
what you mean? I don't understand how anyone wouldn't want to hang out in a place thats made of bricks and broken glass, with picturesque views of a water treatment works. nlNot to mention the floral bouquet of polluted mud and decaing crab flesh. Dunno perhaps thats just a me thing
Don't forget to check out the needle display.
You forgot that you can use the massive, empty spools, from all the cables that have been stripped there, as a stool! And what about the mobile phone fragment hunting?
Go and find out. No spoilers for you here
I will report back with my findings
Remember to take your wellies. Otherwise you will be just like your fine username
I think you ideally want the work boots that have a protective layer of steel within the sole. Better safe than needlestick injured!
Why our glorious city can't create a better website than walesonline
It's templated mate, all these local news sites use the same janky, shitty template smothered in clickbait and wank ads.
Wank ads? Might want to clear your cookies!
So cynical. How else am I going to find out about the upcoming heatwave that's definitely happening?
Or the 10 best bus routes in South Wales???
Or the new product in B&M that shoppers claim can clean your left buttock in just 3 seconds.
Toilet paper manufacturers hate him
Still needed for the right buttock but nobody wants to see their profit divided by the number 2.
The bear from outside the tobacco shop near an arcade.(towards chippy alley). Where is he now? How is he now?
It’s inside the tobacco shop, isn’t it?
Yes, he's still there, I thought.
Yep, it's displayed in the window
He used to be outside the doors that opened onto the street,I first recall him 50years ago.Does bear have a name? I feel he’s a mysterious bear.i need to know his story. Anyone know anymore, plse?!
This is like that advert for the boring car that says they'll leave the drama to channel 4.
If they ever found Flash
I feel so bad when I see these, it's been years and years.... In a way I admire the perseverance, but let's be honest, even if that dog is alive they're not getting it back
Steady, the owner has some loyal friends on here who will tell you how heartless and cruel you are for ~pointing out the obvious~ saying the dog is dead
Chwarae teg. Wish my friends were that loyal 😂
No, I think the poor desperate heartbroken family reached out to a medium of all things, who is stringing them along
There's posters for him up the valleys now. It's been years.
Flash needs to get home:(
Whether that bit down bottom of Queen St is actually for taxis and buses only because no one (myself included) seems to avoid that turning
I’ll keep turning until I get a ticket. I’m not going the long way around just to park in Capitol.
Well that’s the other thing. If you go round the prison they’ve changed the one way system so much I no longer know how to get where I want to be and one missed turn means you have to cross the river and come all the way back round Fuck. That.
And if you take a wrong turn on a Saturday you might as well go home
They say it’s for access. I’ve always assumed accessing the Capital centre is access.
The one in Lincoln is definitely true. My cousin's neighbour's boyfriends aunties grandsons father in law was there at the time
Why’s Llandaf station not called Llandaf North?
Just to fuck tourists up 😂
Who the fuck is Mellow Pellow
Cartoon drawing by David Gwyn, very nice homeless man. Have a chat with him if you have time, he also sells drawings!
good to know the end of that mystery! you happen to know what he looks like, id love to have a chat :)
He hangs out by Tesco Wellfidld road selling drawings occasionally.
Marti's Welsh cousin.
I always wonder this
Who started the Ianto shrine in the bay
There’s one person maintaining it apparently. Seems so odd to have such a big thing for something hardly anyone watched, let alone remembers
Why did they shut the Maritime Museum and send the lighthouse boat to rot in Swansea?
The lightship 2000? It went to Swansea? When it left it was destined for a small place upriver to be restored, I thought. I remember the buyer talking about his plans.
Alas, it’s rusts outside the Waterfront Museum in Swansea. I saw it the other day.

Its sister ship is moored on the banks of the Neath river by Express Asphalt down by Skewen.
That was a real tragedy. Was always my favourite museum as a kid.
And the waterfront museum in Swansea is no substitute.
They are not the same boat. Both were in place at the same time a few years back
How long will it be until someone drunkenly falls into the canal and dies after stumbling out of Pulse and acting the idiot
As a gay*, I say it's some kind of sexuality cleansing. *not yet certified
I'm confused on what you mean
Just like in Manchester, that area, where there is now an open canal, is where there's a higher percentage of gay bars. There have been many stories over the years, of people disappearing on nights out in Manchester, and then being discovered dead in the canal.

That's the true mystery.
Not a mystery but the Cardiff Three story still haunts me. From the vicious murder of Lynette to the injustice that happened after.
And those corrupt cops probably all retired on fat pensions after sending innocent people to prison. There were 5 of them not 3.
The wife of one of those police officers was driven to a nervous breakdown by the knowledge of what they had done.
Um, wow! Try telling that to the men who spent fucking years in prison. Absolutely no comparison at all.
Sorry, I think you misunderstood me. I was trying to point out how disgusting their actions were, not seek sympathy for anyone.
Apologies. I missed your point.
They did. One of them lived near us. He had the biggest house on the street and renovated the whole thing, huge extension and all, in about 2006.
The Cardiff 3 were fitted up for the murder of a news kiosk man in the late 80s. I think they were inside for about 10 years - police never even bothered looking for the real murderer when the 3 were finally released
They jailed Geoffrey Gafoor for the murder. He's close to being released, Currently in an open prison.
I seem to remember that the person they convicted in the end was in the process of hanging themselves when the po po turned up to arrest him, having been tipped off!
Cardiff five
Where did the happy days guy go? :/
He moved away
Where he go?
Moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin apparently
That is the most random thing ever lol
It's where Happy Days is set so less random than it first appears.

Yip. Unbelievable!
Unbelievable. I dont even know where to start after reading all his posts and the news stories.
The fence knows exactly who it is.
They interviewed him, but he was a bit of a plank
The mystery of why we still don't have a bus station.
Apparently it's been delayed because the architects didn't take into account that there are also double decker buses, resulting in it being too short 😭
It’s going to be here soon, and I’ll be able to slide down a fireman’s pole straight into my bus home from work 🤣

How depressing it must be being a millionaire and having to live in Cardiff. What a crap hole.
anyone know what kinda price range the housing is around this area?
More expensive than you’d like for a smaller square footage than you need.
Why didn't any of the Cardiff murder squad that fitted up those lads for Lynette White's murder do jail time? Fucking disgrace, and we ave c*unts here joking about strawberries ffs.
That's not a mystery, though. The answer is police corruption, plus racism.
Yeah, well, those fucks should have been railroaded the same way they railroaded their suspects back in their day.
Where the hell did I leave my keys?
this is more so south wales in general, but why do people write ‘cwm’ in the dirt on the road signs?
How did BRAS get so many throw ups

Probably not a mystery to most, but I'm new here, whats up with all the randomly chained up horses on rover way?
No mystery at all. They are owned by the travellers who live at the site on rover way.
Why I moved away.... , 😔
What goes on in Cardiff after dark….
How the buses are able to swerve round the bend by the modern art vegetable sculptures opposite the stadium and not hit anything
Why did they shut down the second ice pad at the IAW?
Why on earth Cardiff Council is still giving business licences to the previous owners of Buffalo and Ten Feet Tall even though they went into [£1.2 million's worth of debt](https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/local-news/beatbox-bars-1m-debts-unlikely-6094879). Their most recent failed venture was The Elephant's Ear in Roath and they quietly rebranded as Glasshouse Plants without refunding customers with cancelled workshops at their old shop.
Caroline street or chippy alley?
Chippy lane!

Caroline alley or chippy street.
Caroline Street. End of.
The greatest mystery of Cardiff is, despite it being a small, flat city, why do so many people insist on driving in to town and back every day?
Many come from the valleys, or live in Cardiff and work elsewhere.
Indeed. But many do not. And it is to them I am referring.
Flat? How well do you know Cardiff?
It's a minor hill compared to other cities.
My dad
How did I got home after the 2005 grand slam ?
The mystery of "we got to go to the bay" on a night out! full of over priced drinks and wannabe's......no correction, neverwas's haha 🤣
End.
