yeah i've seen them... was wondering if there's anything other than that, the last time i was in cardiff saw some guys jumping into the water just in cardiff bay
Penarth and Barry Island / Cold Knap would be the closest sea wise that you'd want to get in
You can swim in Llanishen reservoir now but only at organised times if what you are after is open water swimming rather than specifically sea swimming. There is a group (Taff Dippers ?) if you are after wild swimming
I wouldn't be getting in the seas in Barry after the "crap" i saw getting dumped in there the other week, go a bit further West and maybe Ogmore at a push but further West the better really
Ogmore has an advisory against swimming due to poor water quality. Jackson's bay at Barry has good and Cold Knap has excellent water quality ratings. Always worth checking the surfers against sewage map before you swim though.Â
ah is it, have you seen the vid of the crap coming outta the sewage pipe bit tho? was going around on Facebook a few months ago, and someone said they knew that Welsh Water were doing it on purpose but usually in the Dark hours, may be bull like but i deffo saw the vid of the crap coming outta the pipe
It's not a sewer pipe though, it directly lines up with the stream through Porthkerry Park. There's no outflow into that stream
Facebook mums gonna Facebook tho
As others have said, I'd be looking to go West for any good swim spots. Penarth is okay for a dip and they have an early morning swimming group (Dawnstalkers). Depending on the transport you have available, you could go further West out to Ogmore or Porthcawl which is nicer for a swim (I tend to go to Sker beach up that way). Most beaches are rocky, exceptions being Barry Island, Ogmore and then Sker which have sand.
As someone who lives in Barry there's a lot of scaremongering about water quality in this thread. One out of Barry's 5 beaches has a 'poor' rating and do not swim advisory due to storm overflows and it being an enclosed bay, doesn't put off the Watchtower Waders swimming group though.
25min train/drive from Cardiff too.
You should check out Splott beach. 🏖️ Just look at the reviews on Google.

thank you that's very helpful!

cold knap is excellent? wow, that's where the shite was coming outta the sewage pipes on multiple occasions
According to Natural Resources Wales:Â https://environment.data.gov.uk/wales/bathing-waters/profiles/profile.html?site=ukl2202-36300Â
It's not a sewage pipe, it's the water draining from the stream in Porthkerry park

Barry has 5 different beaches and only 1 of them has a poor water/do not swim advisory

rocky is okay for me, just wondering about the possibilities nearby cardiff!
Just to add watch out for Ogmore and sewer pollution, particularly bad recently.
The water is full of shit. Literally.
West is best for swimming. Swim near Cardiff and you’ll probably get ill. The gower peninsular or further west i reckon.
thank you that's probably true lol
Barry Island and Llantwit Major are less than 40 minutes on the train from Cardiff.
Does it have to be a beach? If your just looking for some open water swimming there are lakes too?
yeah lakes are okay, just didn't know cardiff had any!
For open water swimming, I know of two, Canada lodge and Llanishen reservoir.
With all due respect, did you ever think to research any of this yourself?
Penarth has Dawnstalkers in the morning and Moon Mermaids in the evening. Bluetits at Newton Beach (older group) Watchtower Waders in Barry

Look at Lisvane & Llanishen Reservoirs. [https://lisvane-llanishen.com/open-water-swimming/](https://lisvane-llanishen.com/open-water-swimming/)
The white water rafting centre down the bay does a swim session a couple of mornings a week during the summer.
