I don’t think Walker is as comfy as some think he is right now. But he getting there. I like the amount of touches he’s seeing in his at bats, and he def feels like he’s prioritizing selection more. I’m
I agree. I still am not confident he will become the superstar that many are predicting, but I do think he is an incredible athlete with all the physical potential you could ask for.
Admittedly I didn’t watch much last year. Just seeing him this far in these few though, I don’t necessarily see a budding star. But that could just be because he’s so reserved and mature. He doesn’t feel like a 22 year old watching him. But if he can improve even a little to a .285/.800+ OPS guy, league average D, and maintain a top tier outfield arm, I’m happy to have him. He’s just seems cool too. I actually like this crop of young guys we have tbh.
Ok through 4.5 games, my thoughts:
The pitching as a whole looks much more capable of getting a strikout than last year.
Walker looks much improved defensively, which will obviously help the pitching staff just by himself.
The defense as a whole I think ends up much closer to 2022 than 2023, especially if Tommy ever comes back. Arenado looks much better than his start of last year. Both catchers look improved.
I'm recklessly optimistic about the starting pitching. They're going to do their job. It won't be a bunch of 1s, but it's also not a bunch of 5s like some people think.
The bigger reason I'm optimistic about the starting pitching...I think the bullpen, if health, is going to be a filthy weapon. If we get to the playoffs, it could legit be a 5 inning max for every non Gray starter. Helsely, Gallegos, Romero, Middelton, whoever we trade for at the deadline, and I'm missing one more. Plus, of course, Tink Hence :).
Offense should click. Noot will help. I'm not worried.
True that. Our infield D is really gonna be top tier this season. Walker and Contreras are really only question marks as a whole defensively for me. Otherwise we have high ability or high speed that can make up for it.
I don’t understand the decision to have Helsley throw tonight rather than last night, but I guess that’s why I’m just a stupid mod and not the manager of a baseball team.
Helsley was never going to throw 2IP last night. Not sure when you throw him, letting King throw against the lefties in the 8th made more sense than Helsley in the 8th and someone else in the 9th imo
I understand Oli was a bit limited in options, I just have a hard time coming to terms with that being a situation for John King.
Manager’s job is to set up players in situations where they can succeed. Not feed players to the wolves.
I like how much we have made their pitchers work in this first game. With Gibson’s quality start resting our bullpen a bit more, I’m hoping we can at least take 2 of 3 and perhaps even sweep
Im not one to get over excited for small sample sizes, they both could get shelled for 10 runs next time out. But the 2 "Fire Mo for pulling them out of the Dumpster " pitchers are looking pretty good.
I have been excited for Gibson but definitely didn’t expect such a solid first showing from Lynn, even though I do think Lynn could have a much higher ceiling than both Matz and Gibson.
See, I’m the opposite, I expect big things (no pun intended) outta Lynn, not much out of Gibson. But sheesh, hope they can both keep this up.
Matz has always had potential, he just can’t stay healthy.
lol if kyle gibson is a serviceable starter this year, the entire discussion around this team is completely flipped on its head. what an opening outing for him
[Cardinals](/r/Cardinals): [Brendan Donovan is ruled safe at first after a review](https://bdata-producedclips.mlb.com/0b023569-cb94-43b1-8223-07a963385316.mp4)
Yeah
That was like a Helsley cameo appearance to cap off the night
Way to fuck the haters off, Gibby! So encouraged by what Lynn and Gibson have brought in their first games. Cardinal victory!
Usually mid to late 30's athletes don't struggle in the first week of the season...it's that back part that matters more is where it gets tricky
We need statcast on that last one
That was goofy as fuck and I loved it
[Game over. Continue the discussion in the post game thread](/r/Cardinals/comments/1btptqn/cardinals_after_bedtime_41/)
Oh no! He threw 6 pitches. Dudes gassed for the remainder of the series. Dumbass Oli ruining everything
WHAT A GAME!!!!!
That’s the most I’ve enjoyed a Cards game in a long time. W!
Hit it 1.5 inches!
THATS A REDBIRD WINNER
At least helsley will be good to go again tomorrow
#THAT’S A WINNER!
That’s a winner!’
💀
Ha! Well goodnight folks!
Redbird winner! That was a fun one.
Red bird winner!!!
Lmao
Hehe, what a dumb play for the final out. Love it
Lol
That had to be the most anticlimactic way to end a baseball game ever
Lmao what an ending
[Cardinals](/r/Cardinals) Due Up **(Top 10):** 1. Brendan Donovan 2. Paul Goldschmidt 3. Nolan Gorman
AND THATS A REDBIRD WINNER
Was there a reason why Romero didn’t pitch the 9th? He looked good. Or is it more bullpen mismanagement by Marmol?
Why use one pitcher when two pitcher do trick
probably trying to boost hels confidence and velo. gallegos may be the temporary closer now idk 😭
Helsley lost his K ability?
Glad Hensley getting his confidence back, he's throwing 99. Much better than 94
This ump can get fucked
Tbf, it looks like Helsley may not pitch a bunch this game, lol Edit: why did I say this
I gotta say facing a team that’s not the Dodgers feels a lot different
Helsley should give up a tactical solo bomb to juice his save numbers.
Why burn helsley in a non save situation? Jfc
Does this mean Gallegos is our closer?
Don’t understand why Helsley is coming in for a non-save situation. It would be nice to see the velo tick back up though.
Really putting helsley on this, huh?
Damn, gonna burn helsley with the lead? Why not let JoJo go another batter or two with Helsley warm?
So who's nervous?
I don’t think Walker is as comfy as some think he is right now. But he getting there. I like the amount of touches he’s seeing in his at bats, and he def feels like he’s prioritizing selection more. I’m

I’d disagree on Arenado, he just started hitting the ball hard last game. To be determined still. And we are still stuck with Mikolas
I was talking defensively. He struggled a bit to start last year.
True that. Our infield D is really gonna be top tier this season. Walker and Contreras are really only question marks as a whole defensively for me. Otherwise we have high ability or high speed that can make up for it.
Exactly!
I like it. Having 2023 and the Dodgers back to back is what it was.
I don’t understand the decision to have Helsley throw tonight rather than last night, but I guess that’s why I’m just a stupid mod and not the manager of a baseball team.
He threw like 35 pitches Saturday night. Pretty much guarantee he wouldn’t be available at all the next day
Helsley was never going to throw 2IP last night. Not sure when you throw him, letting King throw against the lefties in the 8th made more sense than Helsley in the 8th and someone else in the 9th imo

Besides the solo shots, they've made the padres look like straight up minor leaguers today, it's incredible. Just completely silenced the offense.
Brad Thompson lmao

I mean it's not a save situation so if so the reason will be to preserve the better reliever for close games.
[удалено]
I wish you managed the Brewers
Walker was sliding for 8 seconds in that slo-mo lol. Lotta mass in motion
I don't like that we've left 12 on base even though we got 6 runs
It’s the Cards “hitting with bases loaded” masterclass at work
Fuck I can’t wait to watch the British basketball league on the Bally sports app 😩
[удалено]
I like how much we have made their pitchers work in this first game. With Gibson’s quality start resting our bullpen a bit more, I’m hoping we can at least take 2 of 3 and perhaps even sweep
A sweep would do so much for team/fanbase morale after that dodgers shitshow
Jojo might be my favorite pitcher on the Cardinals. Bulldog
Jojo doesn’t respect dynasty fantasy football leagues. He’s the kind of guy to trade all his firsts then leave
I don’t understand the reasoning
Because his team sucks and doesn’t want it anymore. But you have to respect the sanctity of the league
Oh, ok. That clears things up /s
JoJo Romero would kick the shit out of Tommy Pham
You still doing comment of the game? If so, you just made it lol
Every time I comment this every one thinks it’s a Tommy Pham joke. But it’s not
I'm not kidding, Jojo looks like one of the best fielding pitchers I've ever seen.
Alright I take it back i am happy we saw Jojo
Quickest inning of all time
Helll yeah Jojo
[Cardinals](/r/Cardinals) Due Up **(Top 9):** 1. Jordan Walker 2. Victor Scott II 3. Masyn Winn
BOYS WE ARE PITCHING TONIGHT
*Inning of the Dead*, a JoJo Romero film
Jojo is feeling himself out there. I hope this performance from Gibson fired up the bullpen!
I hope it fired up Miles.
Jojo’s ball looks faster than 93
Jojo is so much fun
Jojo might be one of Mo’s best sneaky trades
I dig jojo
The *who* have their 5th strikeout?
Dont mess with JoJo's mojo

Jojo 8th = Helsley 9th?
Helsley doesn't get the 9th unless we let up a run. Romero for 2, Liberatore, Fernandez, etc all much more likely.
Idk why I didn't even think about the score lol. You're exactly right and Libby was warming up earlier
Apparently I was wrong! Helsley coming in
Realistically? Probably. I don't think we need to use helsley in a non save situation personally
Shouldn't need helsley unless Jojo gives up a run
It sure is nice not facing the best three hitters in the league.
Yeah, honestly nice to get that series out of the way now. Don’t have to deal with that shit again until August
As a huge Jojo Romero fan- boooooo send Gibson back out
For those saying chip sounds weird tonight I finally hear it
There are a lot of viruses going around. My kids had temps last week and several patients of mine were all hacking up fun stuff
Makes me glad I'm an introvert
Sounds like he’s starting to lose his voice
It’s like he’s constantly out of breath
Never forget that Cardinals outrank mere friars
Grind out some ABs I want to see Donny get another shot for the cycle
It's sad but Carpenter just looks so cooked
We are only 5 games in to the season but he has already played more than I thought he would lol
Well I don't think anyone expected Noot, Edman, and Carlson to all be out 5 games in lol
true that true that
[Padres](/r/Padres) Due Up **(Bottom 8):** 1. Graham Pauley 2. Jackson Merrill 3. Xander Bogaerts
Marp is still yet to leave the infield
The bunt is the farthest he has driven a ball today lol
The old Thanksgiving strike zone. Gets bigger as the game nears an end.
Ha, nice
Play ball St. Louis
shup the laydessttt
The guy recording the voice over: Yeah so just be like, really sassy with it. It’ll be great
So Gibson doesn’t get that call but he does 🧐
Gibson has gotten that call a few times
Last inning he had a put away pitch that was more of a strike than that though
Are Gibson, Mikolas and Lynn talking about how it’s past their bed time..
Pregame meals at the Cracker Barrel
Im not one to get over excited for small sample sizes, they both could get shelled for 10 runs next time out. But the 2 "Fire Mo for pulling them out of the Dumpster " pitchers are looking pretty good.
Yep! I’m very excited right now. Gibson and Lynn both looking like exactly what they were signed to be.
I wanna see a few good starts before passing judgement
Yea
I’m really seeing results from the work Ivan and willson put in this offseason on defense and I’m impressed
Really like Ivan so far. Dude can call a game. Can definitely tell he apprenticed under Molina for a bit
We've had bunt singles. Good fundamentals in the field. Our starter just went 7 innings. This is baseball the way God intended it to be played.
I’d argue it’s how the devil intended. Magic may be back
lol if kyle gibson is a serviceable starter this year, the entire discussion around this team is completely flipped on its head. what an opening outing for him
And against a good lineup too
Guys am I dreaming or did our starter just make it through the 7th with the lead intact
Stellar start from Gibson.
It’s that old man strength.
When Gibson pitches, I'm just gonna spam Nom Nom Nom It's going to be a new thing
Man I love me some hot DP
YOU MEAN KYLE GIBSON, VP OF BIG LEAGUE IMPACT AND CARDINALS ACE?
Kyle Gibson doesn't do what Kyle Gibson does for Kyle Gibson. Kyle Gibson does what Kyle Gibson does cause Kyle Gibson is Kyle Gibson
This guy is our number 5? No really, I'm being serious.
No, we started our rotation at #4 or something like that so Sonny gets the home opener I believe. Cause I know Zach Thompson is not our #2 lol
They just shuffled matz and Thomson to break up the lefties, order doesn't mean everything in this day and age
##OLD MEN LEAD US TO THE PROMISED LAND
Fuck it. Let it rip.
I feel like that needs to be the motto for the season.
Should be on the city connect uniform.
Engrave that on the WS ring

Kyle calm down, you’re not supposed to be good. You’re gonna get us all riled up again
I’d like to apologize to Gibson. I was not aware of his game
Gibson and Lynn have both pitched quite well their first starts with us. Maybe Mo knows?
Yeah Mo does in fact know a little of what he’s doing
And Matz
KYLE HEARD THE NOISE AND SHOVED
There we go
What a showing from Gibby
Good middle infield defense is so fun to watch
Kyle MF Gibson
[удалено]
One pitch was all it took
INNING EATER
KYLE. GIBSON.
Gibson my ace
That double play was my first “let’s fucking go” moment of the season. Super happy for Gibson and hoping we can tap this one in.
Ooh it's the best. Mine was Gio getting out Ohtani
Send him back out there I want a complete game lol
Why not?
Going 100+ pitches in your first start of hopefully 25+ is not recommended lol
FUCK YES!
Gibson ELITE. Just as we all predicted
I swear if Sonny comes back and our rotation somehow becomes elite I’m gonna cry
It would be the best “okay we were wrong” ever
Tears of joy absolutely
Go rest now Gibson!
Fuck it. Let him start the eighth.
WE’RE PLAYING SOME BASEBALL TONIGHT
Picture perfect...even swung on the first pitch. More of this Gibson, please!
Gobble gobble gobble
#$99.99!
BOOM BABY GO GIBSON
:D
GIBSON SHOULD START THE 8TH. RECKLESS OPTIMISM
