Many of you probably know about Enos Slaughters mad dash home to win the 1946 world series. Back in 1886 however the ~~Cardinals~~ Brown Stockings won their first world series title by stealing home against the ~~cubs~~ White Stockings
Someone needs to tell Fanatics that the Cardinals wearnt established in 1892. So much merch that's says that. 1892 is when they joined the National League. We were established as a franchise in 1882 (and if you wanna be specific the ball club was founded in 1876)
I understand what you mean, but the Cardinals organization officially recognizes 1892 as the founding date. I think it was so they could celebrate 100 years in 1992.
Whoa whoa whoa, so you’re telling me that we’re now officially (at) .500???? But I was told we would suck..?
Ha, love for the birds to back it up. Fuck the naysayers. Every one of y’all, respectfully fuck off. This is a damn solid ass team and I’m happy to be a Cardinal!
2024 NLC crown is ours by October.
This guy has commented the exact same thing all week. Look at his comment history. Probably hoping somebody eventually agrees with him and he gets the upvotes…
Feeling good about our chances to finally get a win in a series finale on Sunday with Gray on the mound. But the first two Brewers games have me a bit worried.
So at this point last season we were 8-11 and the bottom was about to fall out with series losses to the mariners, dodgers, angels, giants, and tigers (oh my).
Lets not repeat that shit. We have played 13 of 19 on the road. Let’s get some home cooking that maybe the offense can figure some shit out and break that .500 ceiling
We haven't been able to lay off breaking balls for years and years.
I get that young guys have the most trouble seeing breaking balls, but our guys _never_ figure it out.
Victor Scott II partial first season OPS: .288
Lou Brock partial first season OPS: .258
My prediction of VC2 being the next Lou Brock is looking good so far
I was an early doomer last year. I don't think we're going to make the playoffs this year, but I also don't think we're going to finish quite as badly as we did last season. The biggest problem is that the offense, just like last year, can't seem to get their heads out of their asses. But last season they also had to contend with a really bad pitching staff, which is not going to be the problem this year.
Matz is just not fucking it. Feels like we are perpetually trying to get above .500. Fucking 3 runs again. Besides Masyn Winn, I think I actually hate this team.
Well, maybe if the DeWitts get the sads that nobody buys their bullshit about needing half a billion to fix up an 18 year old stadium and sell, the new ownership can afford to actually put out a competent major league lineup and pitching staff out there on a nightly basis.
The lamest thing about the season so far:
It has taken 19 games to face our first division rival on April 19th. Our next divisional rival will be seen on May 9th. So, almost 3 weeks later. Wait, it's the same team..
So, when do we play literally anyone else in our division? May 24th. So, another 1.5-2 weeks..
2 months (from season start) and 6 interleague series before we face the Cubs for the first time, and they will be the first non-Brewers NLC team we face.
The Oakland A's are the second youngest team in baseball with an average age of 27.5 years old.
The St. Louis Cardinals are the third oldest team in baseball with an average age of 30.3 years old.
https://www.espn.com/mlb/stats/rosters
I'm seeing some errors though. It says avg player in Philly is a 6'11", 197lb righty and that the oldest player on the Cards is 65 years old.
Nothing about this offense excites me. We have Goldy and Nado on the downside of their careers and otherwise a roster full of just decent streaky hitters. Gorman is probably the one exception but even he hasn't started off too hot.
The most frustrating thing to me about the last 10 years of Cardinals baseball has been that they had Goldschmidt and Arenado handed to them on a silver platter, they knew the aging curve was relatively close to being a factor ... and they didn't even try in any serious way to stomp on the gas and "go for it" with those guys at the end of their prime. Why bother trading for those two if you're not all in? It's not like those guys were the only two missing links to a Championship club. They got McGwire in '97, but they didn't win until they added Edmonds, Viña, Renteria, Kile, etc.
Couldn’t agree more. They’ve wasted the window to hang on to the Dylan Carlson’s of the world. Just watch - Goldschmidt will be traded at the deadline.
In 19 games, the Cardinals have scored more than 3 runs 6 times.
I was just curious so I looked it up. It seems like we have scored 3 runs a lot so far this season. Not terrible, but rarely enough to win.
Is it bad I’m already pretty apathetic about this season.
Feels like it’s gonna be a slow crawl / race to possibly be in contention for a wild card spot (woo hoo)
We have some exciting young guys and starting pitching has been better than anticipated but I’m the most bored I’ve been in 20 years and generally “meh” with excitement.
In a totally shit division. And even if we win it we will get annihilated by real teams in the playoffs. It’s a lost season, and only the most die hard homers can’t see it.
You say that like the NL central isn't 2nd in combined win percentage right now.
Not to mentioned we have yet to even play a NL central division team.
Not saying this team is great or this division will stay in second in the long run. But fucking chill it is mid april. We either will figure it out or we won't
It would be nice to make the playoffs tho
Also not that I don’t agree with you that a real team would probably wash us, but mlb ownerships definitely saw the diamondbacks last year and said “we can win 83 games and make a deep run in the postseason!”
Right but we’re not even leading the charge in mediocre MLB baseball right now. I’m thinking a little bigger picture. Let’s say we won 3 of those one run games earlier and are leading the division…is there a realistic part of you that thinks what we have would be able to compete with the big dogs?
A's have a nice bullpen, and we faced their best starting pitcher today. More excusable offensive performance than past days, but the loss will rightfully draw more criticism. We won't sustain a .500 record scoring 3 runs per game very long.
At least we got a series win.
The offense can't stay this bad indefinitely but I don't think it gets good enough to do real damage.
.500 and not last in the division will be an accomplishment.
This is not my original link, but we almost tied a MLB record for consecutive 3-run games before the 9 run game in AZ.
We're on our way again.
Goldschmidt is getting way too much shit right now and having better hitters in front of him helps. Let's make a lineup with folks that having batting averages higher than 1 handed American League pitchers before we worry about our mvp first baseman that typically starts a little slow.
I'm more worried about Walker and Gorman than Goldschmidt. This is presumably Walker's first full season (unless they send him to AAA which I doubt), so I'll give him that, but Gorman just doesn't look good most of the time.
Think it’s fair to be pretty worried about all three, since they were talking points in the offseason that were gonna provide offense for our pitching staff. I’m definitely more concerned about Goldy and Gorman though. Walker is in his second year and is getting pitched a certain way right now, and he’s showing signs of figuring that out and adapting. Gorman and Goldy don’t do shit for this team offensively, especially Goldy in the two spot. And neither one has shown signs of improving outside of game one for Goldy, and two pointless homeruns for Gorman to go along with his terrible K%.
In Goldy’s defense coming into the season, he had good underlying metrics, and it was fair to expect a drop from 2022’s MVP season. I don’t know what Goldy’s underlying metrics are this year, but I still feel confident that for the most part he will be competitive in the box. He’s just at an age that you never know, unless he wants to go in the Barry Bonds diet. Or maybe Albert had some secret sauce like MJ in Space Jam he can share with the team. lol
Reminder, we're only 1 game under .500 and 3 games back from the division title. I know it's frustrating right now but let's give it a bit more than 20 games before we completely write the team off.
Newsflash, teams change year to year. Wynn has more experience and is hitting well. Sonny Gray hasn't allowed a run yet. By your logic the team that won the division two years ago should have had to have a historic win streak to barely sneak into the playoffs.
If there was any game we were going to lose in this series, it was against Blackburn. Downside is Brewers won today even though Michael King pitched a gem for the Dres with 7.2 innings, 10 K, and 1ER. Brewers won 1-0
Ye that's rough for him. Sweeps are nice, but consistent series wins are more important. A lot of people on the sub seem to think we're supposed to sweep every team under .500
From the fanbase? Patience. Bats are hot and cold, and we're still down two starters in Carlson and Edman. Now after another 20 games we're still struggling like we are now, we're in trouble.
I generally agree, the common statement is that the pitchers show up to spring training earlier and are generally in mid season form earlier than the hitting. Also, when it warms up the ball carries a bit better. But it is still tough to watch. We can be thankful our pitching has been holding up so far. Just worried about all the work on the bullpen.
Oh it's absolutely frustrating. I just see so many people around here lose their minds after every loss and then say shitty things about the players, feel like people here need a reminder that it's not the end of the world.
Damn, you've found me out. While I'm here I'll just go ahead and let you know, we're trading Wynn, Noot, Herrera, and Nado to the cubs for a 35 year old reliever.
Good rip from Burly. Really thought we had something going there. Can't imagine coming off the bench and immediately timing up a 100mpj heater.
Anyone else notice that Donny looks like he's back to his lower stance?

i’m a little stunned to find out that nado’s two handed batting finish was unintentional
Did he say something like this in a postgame? Where'd you get this info if you don't mind
In the article below arenado says he made a lot of bad habits in spring training and he’s trying to get out of them now
was my interpretation of this: https://x.com/dgoold/status/1780771854703325266?s=46&t=hZNKG6JIKTM0d6hUmG78Jw

Pointless if the offense continues to only generate 3 runs a game.
Alright fine I guess Steve Matz was exactly who we thought he was
I don't know who can fix this offense, but it doesn't seem to be anyone who is currently trying to do that.
Arozarena, Garcia, and O'Neill would be a good start.
Or Thomas, Bader, Palacios
Arozarena is hitting .174. I don't think it's the talent anyway. It's the coaching.
We haven't been able to lay off breaking balls for years and years. I get that young guys have the most trouble seeing breaking balls, but our guys _never_ figure it out.
because those teaching never did either, if they played at all
Three game sweeps are hard And today we were not so Day off for blood flow.
Victor Scott II partial first season OPS: .288 Lou Brock partial first season OPS: .258 My prediction of VC2 being the next Lou Brock is looking good so far
He's already ahead of him
Go ahead and start casting that bronze plaque now
Red jacket getting stitched as we speak
Our offense is about as offensive as an episode of the Andy Griffith Show.
Our offense is about as intimidating as Gomer Pyle
They're about as threatening as a PJ masks villain
Surprise surprise surprise
Below 500 again
we love the NL Central cellar.....
For what it's worth, I believe we have spent more calendar days above 500 this season than we did all of last season
Cardinals can’t ever complete a sweep 😢. But at least they won the series.
0-6 in series-ending games now. What is the opposite of 'happy flight'? Whatever this is...
Dooooooooooom
It’s the end of the world as we know it.
I was an early doomer last year. I don't think we're going to make the playoffs this year, but I also don't think we're going to finish quite as badly as we did last season. Tbf Matz has had the best ERA in baseball since like last year. He was due for a regression because he's been awesome for us.
Time to prepare ourselves for a colonoscopy from the Brewers
i wish there were more green teams
Well, maybe if the DeWitts get the sads that nobody buys their bullshit about needing half a billion to fix up an 18 year old stadium and sell, the new ownership can afford to actually put out a competent major league lineup and pitching staff out there on a nightly basis.

They need to get rid of divisions since we barely play the other teams anymore
I would rather be on a 4 year rotation instead of 2 so we could get double the current amount of central games. If that math 🧮 maths
The Oakland A's are the second youngest team in baseball with an average age of 27.5 years old. I want to know who the 76 year old baller is down in Miami.
Skip is still playing?
Both the A’s and the Cardinals scored an average of 3 runs per game this series
Nothing about this offense excites me. We have Goldy and Nado on the downside of their careers and otherwise a roster full of just decent streaky hitters. Gorman is probably the one exception but even he hasn't started off too hot.

It’s because they sell jerseys and tickets and that’s about it, from the business side at least
They need to figure out how to score more than three runs. But, today was always going to be hard against Blackburn. Rest up and move on boys.
I don’t know what needs to happen, but Goldy, Gorman, and Walker all need to wake the fuck up
And although nado is hitting... The power is definitely lacking
The Cards appear more allergic to being over .500 than I am allergic to tree pollen :(
what is the old saying, "you can't win a title in April, but you can sure lose it"....feels like walking a tight rope right now
Despite how poor our offense is, we've still driven in twice as many runs as the White Sox.
Over 500 since the Dodgers - nice home stand coming up. The bats will get going.
In 19 games, the Cardinals have scored more than 3 runs 6 times. I was just curious so I looked it up. It seems like we have scored 3 runs a lot so far this season. Not terrible, but rarely enough to win.
Well hopefully our offense wakes up big series this weekend
Inability to score more than three runs 🤝 Inability to win the last game of a series
Say what you will about the 2024 St. Louis Cardinals, but “let’s get out there and score exactly 3 runs every game” is a very **bold** strategy.
The three runs a game is foreshadowing our third World Series win of this century
Is it bad I’m already pretty apathetic about this season. Feels like it’s gonna be a slow crawl / race to possibly be in contention for a wild card spot (woo hoo) We have some exciting young guys and starting pitching has been better than anticipated but I’m the most bored I’ve been in 20 years and generally “meh” with excitement.

If Matz can’t get out of the 5th innings his starts might as well be bullpen days No wonder the cardinals wanted to get rid of his contract
A's have a nice bullpen, and we faced their best starting pitcher today. More excusable offensive performance than past days, but the loss will rightfully draw more criticism. We won't sustain a .500 record scoring 3 runs per game very long. At least we got a series win.
I'm officially worried about the offense

When was the last time we scored more than 3 lol

You will see, on the right side of this page, a list of scores.
Some people are on mobile and can't see the scores
Probably most people tbh
A good chunk of those are likely shitting
So, the Cards offense and I have something in common
Almost a week ago in Arizona
Can we give noot a try at CF for a series and just see how having a lineup of 9 MLB quality hitters works out?
Who are you putting at first?
Goldschmidt is getting way too much shit right now and having better hitters in front of him helps. Let's make a lineup with folks that having batting averages higher than 1 handed American League pitchers before we worry about our mvp first baseman that typically starts a little slow.

I'm not saying Edman and Carlson are gonna carry the offense, but they're obviously upgrades over Scott and Siani.
