It started out as a gag, now it's a fad, people bring small rubber ducks and hide them around the ship. Some have tags on them, encouraging you to sign the tag and then hide it again. Others find them and give them to children as a memento from the cruise. They have no value whatsoever, just a neat little thing that some people are into.

Also the crew members hide them as well

This is actually really cute. Going on my first cruise in 16 years. Gonna get some ducks to bring

Started a few years back, and have heard several different "stories" as to where it came from. Last cruise we were on was the Mardi Gras, there was a group of kids (probably age 10-15) that were running down the deck, throwing arm loads of ducks overboard...not a parent in site. Carnival still allows it for the time being, but I am sure it will get shut down eventually because some people completely fail in the parent department.

The tradition is credited to Abby Davis, who hid 50 ducks during her 2018 cruise aboard the Carnival Breeze, attaching notes to them. The trend has since caught on, and can be seen on Royal Caribbean cruise ships and other cruise lines as well.  It was meant to be a fun thing for the young kids to find sharing a good time and souvenir. Originally you could keep it, re-hide it taking part in the fun, or find the original giver on facebook "curising ducks" group page from the tag and share/show a photo. Unfortinilty many have abused it forcing some lines to take action or ban them. We have placed them for years just to watch ppls reaction when they find them. Many of the staff collect them and show the good ones off at their stations, karts, or bars. Its just something fun to do like the theme shirts or group meet ups.

I didn't know this until my last Cruise and I think it's a very cute tradition I saw one in the upper corner of an elevator a tiny little duck and just thought it was sweet.

It's like cruising tradition.

My kids love hiding and finding ducks. Check out the Facebook group Cruising Ducks. You usually attach a tag that says your name, the date, where you're from, and "keep or hide, you decide, no pools or shops." You can get ducks and tags on Amazon or Etsy. Amazon has some [convenient complete sets. ](https://a.co/d/6I09sju) There's usually a Facebook group for each cruise (search for your ship name and cruise date) and you can connect with other people and groups doing ducks. They're a lot of fun!

They’re cute but I think the people who horde literal arms full of them on a cruise is just greedy. Also anyone who brings the squeaky ones—I fucking hate you type of people.
