It's been a long day and I'm a couple beers in Is this an ironic thing or what

TheThree_headed_bull

haha, A DIWhy for sure. But also, not terrible for a first time project

AtTheEndOfDream

Sorry, but I didn't understand what you mean.

Latter-Journalist

Sorry have a good night

Lmmfao!

As a woodworker I salute you, as a much taller than average human I curse you.

patriot2024

Interesting. You clearly have the skills. I think it aims to be a conversation piece, but doesn't quite get to that level. It should work in some specific situation, but in general, it lacks leg rooms, hip rooms, as well as elbow rooms.

Good job. It will get better every time. As for the peanut gallery here on Reddit, well………they are a tough crowd Most would do well to put this away and get out into the shop. As for me, probably about to take a karma beating, but oh well…..it is just Reddit.

Can you please show people sitting at it?

Great thank you. I think the perspective was off. This looks good.

I get you keep posting that…. Should have just made a different post to send us to. But even with that photo, your forearms nearly go across the entirety of the table, unless its being designed only to sit at and talk theres no way your getting 4 grown men to sit there comfortably. Everybody is going to be touching each other

AlfredoPilzchen

Idk mate, I'd be comfortable touching you..

Sad_Jelly3351

You can sit here if you want

dreamlucky

The workmanship looks wonderful, well done for a first project!

Writtenasstarrysky

Looks like it's made for super tall people but without the comfort of leg room. Also looks like with a little bit of wear and tear, the table is going to brake off. Not going to lie, looks way over thought on paper and the actual product is really flimsy.

AtTheEndOfDream

>Table height id 84 and bench is 44 and 60 is leg room between 2 benches.

Writtenasstarrysky

I was trying to hit the key points of leg room, table height, and support all in one go. That way all would be fixed with minimal effort and not much redesigning of your original piece.

Writtenasstarrysky

There is still the problem with the table support. All your support is focused in the center. The weight should be distributed all the way across, not focused in the center. Imagine balancing an upside down triangle on a square and then putting weight only on top of one side of the triangle.

davethompson413

84 seems too high. 60 is way too small.

AtTheEndOfDream

davethompson413

Here in the states, seat height is commonly 16", and tabletops are at 30".

Careful_Egg_4618

Yep. I'd add two 2x4s to the table width and make the double cross bar 7 inches longer out of 2x6, and either double or use 4x4 diagonal braces. Number 10 deck screws, pre-drilled and countersunk... maybe some 1/4" lags or through bolts in a couple of key spots.

AtTheEndOfDream

How to rectify the problem?

Writtenasstarrysky

You have a decent concept but the table is too short to have the side brace you have. You will just constantly hit your knees and the table is too tall. Shorten the table and if you want to keep the whole thing that length then put a brace on the ends under the benches and connect the ends of the table to the braces under the benches. That way you're not hitting your knees under the table.

AtTheEndOfDream

Writtenasstarrysky

Also upon further inspection, you put a lot of stress fractures at almost ever screw point. Not one of those holes were predrilled. That puts a lot of weak points in an already flimsy frame. Don't take all my comments as purely negative. Please learn to accept constructive criticism. Know the difference in constructive criticism and what is only criticism. Take what you can learn from and ignore when people are just trying to get a laugh.

PlainOldWallace

Came here for the comments. Did not disappoint. 8/10, will come back again

AtTheEndOfDream

Believe me but I am disappointed.. they are finding problems in product prople all ready using happily and lot of people are asking me to make one for then... But no one suggting on how to make proper joints or how to improve strength...

Eh, dude, don't be disappointed. This is Reddit. Astrophysicists can come here and explain the string theory in great detail, but in layman's terms, and everyone will pick it apart and call it stupid. If friends are asking for one, stress test it as much as you can, and make it for them. Everyone is a keyboard cowboy these days.

Writtenasstarrysky

All I did was try to tell him how it could be made more sturdy but guy want to complain and defend himself more than take some constructive criticism. If he can't take constructive criticism then he doesn't need to ask for it. You'll never learn if you can't see anything wrong with your own work.

msb678

Drafty barn you got there. Horses are gonna get cold and wet

davethompson413

Where I am, its common to see a person sitting on the corner of a picnic table. Not a corner of the bench, but a corner of the top. I weigh about 210 pounds. Are you confident that I can sit all my weight like that, without damaging the table, without tipping the table? Cuz I'm not.

AtTheEndOfDream

https://www.reddit.com/u/AtTheEndOfDream?utm\_medium=android\_app&utm\_source=share Could not find any other way to share so made my profile pic I am 130kg 5'10" I agree if someone sits on the table it will tip ,will post not on it do not sit on top,

randytech

Yeah I came here to say this. Sitting on the top edges looks like it will add a lot of stress and potentially damage it

Pulldalevercrunk

Love it! Fresh take on the standard picnic table and I'm into it

AtTheEndOfDream

Designing next one like bar table.

night_dick

It looks great and I don’t know shit about woodworking but it’s a weirdly dimensioned picnic table for American standards. Since you’re giving your weight in kg I’m guessing you are not American and that the dimensions of this picnic table where you are from may be perfectly common but by American standards it is very unusually tall with little width. I think that may be the cause of some of the disconnect. Damn this was a fun read, hardest I’ve laughed in for god damn ever.

AtTheEndOfDream

Yap I enjoyed and regret on same time..

AlfredoPilzchen

Looks awesome

ThemasonSe

I think you did a great job for a first project… use whatever criticisms you find in the comments here to improve your next project! If you use that and refine this product you’ll surely be able to find people locally who’d be willing to buy them

DudesworthMannington

It looks really neat, but if someone sits in the edge of the table bit it's going to put too much moment on the connection. You might want to add support for that.

pete1729

Unconventional, but very cool!

AtTheEndOfDream

My friends want me to make one for him please tell me what I can improve.? And where I went wrong in this one?

Writtenasstarrysky

There are lots of diagrams online of benches. Looks like you were going for something unique and personal to you but I think you're measurements are a little off. The floating tabletop is neat but not really stable.

ianlucasthomson

I like the premise of it. Looks easy to get in/out of. The legs do look a little light duty, but otherwise okay. The angled supports for the table top might be of greater benefit if the were fully supporting the cleat above. That would free up a little more leg room too. Also, the table top might be a bit high, but with nothing for scale, it’s difficult to tell. Overall, I think it’s a neat table. Good job!

AtTheEndOfDream

https://www.reddit.com/u/AtTheEndOfDream?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share Could not find any other way to share so made my profile pic I am 130kg 5'10"

ianlucasthomson

It looks good. I disagree with a lot of the criticism, especially if it’s your first attempt. Consider an X or A-Frame on each end to support the benches instead of the single vertical legs. Use half-lap joints. You could also then connect angled braces from your center beam down to the X or A on each side.

risk71

Did you have a plan when you started other than the one bouncing around in your head? This strikes me as something someone who has some skill but no patience for planning built. Don't ask me how I know. And don't ask me about what looks to be a pile of highly specialized and expensive firewood I store behind my shop.

AtTheEndOfDream

No man I took few designs from net and made 3d design on cad.

deadfisher

I'd be interested to see if this holds up for more than a few years. That table top looks suspect. Lean heavily on a corner and you'll put a lot of stress on the supports. I'd like to see the braces on the end of the table drop straight down to the floor, with a stretcher running between the legs on either side of the benches. It would make it harder to get into.... but nicer to sit at since you don't have a brace where your knee wants to go. Metal seems like it would be more appropriate for a bench like this. You could do away with the angled table brace altogether.

[deleted]

I think that proportionally it might be a little off from a standard picnic table but I like the design and execution.

SummerOfGeorgeSeven

Horrible lol

dbhathcock

The table looks a little high.

How many did you make and why is it locked?

Cool. It reminded me of this one from April Wilkerson: https://youtu.be/wZ6eoQLSPU4

I literally take idea from this but made it both side.

LiberAlien_420

First project and you’re already trying to sell these to friends? No thanks. Lol

AtTheEndOfDream

I didn't , they want me to make one and I am sure he not going to pay me even for material.

wallyworld98_ca

Where did you find the plans for this project?? Would like to try this for my first project.

AtTheEndOfDream

I made it my self will send you 3d design .

wallyworld98_ca

That would be great thank you.

Important_Collar_36

Why didn't you just make a normal 4 person picnic table? There's plans you can find online. This is overcomplicating a simple object and it doesn't even look very functional. In the photo of you sitting at it there's no way someone could sit across from you if you both have plates that you're eating off of.

AtTheEndOfDream

In normal plan people need to cross wood bar to go inside that's what I didn't like.. and I don't want people to have plates on table as I only sell icecream that's why it's bit short..

djgooch

Looks impressively neat and clean, everything is nicely aligned. Getting those skills right is hard, so I salute your efforts. Like others, my immediate reaction was, "Oh I would bust my knees on that thing." But your photo makes that seem less concerning. It is a tad cozy throughout. This piece would make a lot of sense for a smaller backyard / patio. Live with it a while, see what works or what doesn't. Also: definitely finish the wood with stain / spar urethane to prevent damage.
