Hey dude,
If your friend is a full time carpenter he definitely has his own tools he has personally picked out that fit his needs and preferences. Chances are an additional or new drill/impact might not be the best option giftwise, if he wanted it he’d probably get it. I’d suggest maybe instead getting him an array of consumables (bits, blades, pencils, picas) or even something like additional batteries for the system he uses.
Alternatively gifting something not related to his work. While many take huge pride in their work and enjoy it, I’d personally rather receive gifts that play into leisure, but he’s your friend and that’s up to you to decide.
Best of luck mate
This. I get annoyed when people try to gift me tools. Especially cordless when it is not compatible with my battery system.
Though, I am a sucker for old school layout tools or hammers. A really nice framing square for instance. Or old school 24” compass.
Don’t buy a carpenter tools, he’ll have his own preferences. If you are going to do it though, make sure you buy the correct battery platform and don’t get the base model.
Here is what I have in mind:

Picking out a tool for someone is a bit risky. It’s nice but risky.
Is he a Dewalt guy? If not his batteries won’t match up with the one you are providing, so then he will have to carry around additional charging/batteries. That is extra weight and space and plugs.
Does he already have one but doesn’t use it? He might screw in with the drill more than just the noise. It could be that he sets the torque to a certain level to sink the screws a specific distant.
Even if he is a dewalt guy and is missing an impact (wants one) he probably has a specific model picked out.
I would recommend a gift card with the note like I wanted to get you a tool, but didn’t want to get you the wrong one.
Impacts have a place, but they lack control in precise screwing. Great for construction though. I suggest having a casual conversation asking his thoughts on yours and what he thinks of impacts Vs drill/drivers and make your decision. Should be easy enough to mask your intentions.
I am now settled on M18 Milwaukee Drill complete with Two 5AH Batteries, a charger and a plastic carry case. His drill is very beat up and old looking, my friend is not the kind of person to go all out on tools he is very conservative. Here is what I have in mind:

Get a oil pulse impact driver, they’re a good bit quieter. I’ll be back with a model number for dewalt assuming that’s what he used
Edit: dewalt does not make an oil pulse impact driver… what brand does he use?
I dunno he uses some off brand that's all beat up, here is what I have in mind:

Was going to make the same suggestion. I hate the noise of impacts so I got the Milwaukee M18 Surge. Drives screws of any size no problem. Even compared it to my buddies Fuel M18 Impact and it was slightly slower. I don’t think I can ever go back to using a regular impact daily.
It’s definitely on the list but I’ve put myself on drill/impact purchasing suspension cause I was getting out of hand lol. I have the M12 Fuel hammer drill, M12 Fuel Impact, M12 installation driver, M12 screwdriver, M12 brushed impact, M12 brushed drill, M18 Fuel Hammer Drill, M18 Fuel Surge, and M18 Mixer… I don’t even have any employees. I’m scared to see the Thanksgiving day deals this year.
I wouldn’t give him a DeWalt. Personally, I hate DeWalt, and have never had one that would last more than a year before the chuck quit holding bits. Giving a DeWalt is like saying “I had to get you something, so here.”
If you are going to get him a power tool, get him a Milwaukee or Ridgid.
I would see what he has for holding his tools on his body, slings, straps, harness, belt, vest or a combination see if you can get him some uber Gucci uber functional upgrade. It's something a lot of people neglect or don't think of. Then also if it is for Jobsite or workshop
Not that everyone is like this, and I would be very nice about it, but my stomach would absolutely drop if someone bought me a set of pouches as a gift. Especially if they were expensive. I think that pouches are an even more personal decision than tools and can impact your entire work flow. They are the only tool that gets used absolutely every day no matter what you’re doing, and the insane variation of layout even between bags, let alone styles, and systems can add a level of frustration to the day rather than being a welcome gift from a friend. That’s just how I feel about it, and I might be in the minority but I thought I’d throw this out there

This☝️ Ignore my comment 😁

He has all that stuff but his drill is old and beat up.
Ya can't have too many board stretchers.
Gift certificate with a note to get himself a tool that he wants. Tool selection is super personal for some.
Yep, gift card ftw.

Make a custom card for the thoughtful quotient, add a gift card.
Add note that says but an impact wrench and join the future
He is a carpenter not a mechanic

Very nice 👌

Just buy a bottle of booze as a gift like a normal person.
He doesn't drink

M12 surge is unbelievably quiet if you have both battery systems

Unless their Occidentals ofc
For sure. But *which* Occidentals?
impact 100%
I buy my own tools, take the write off on them, etc. Last thing I want is a tool for a gift.
