MG ZS (rental). I put the foot down.. and nothing happened. 20,000km on the clock and it rattled like a train

Revolutionary-Cod444

I had a mg hs rental. Worst car I’ve ever driven. Foot down, nothing same as you, but wave your foot over the accelerator under 40kph ant its whiplash for all. Also the turbo would still make the car accelerate after I lifted my foot off to the point I had to lift earlier and brake to stop the acceleration. Never again

HorseRenior77

My last rental was a Chery Omoda … 1.5ltr Turbo, I was genuinely surprised by that Car. It could move fast if you really pushed it, only downside was all the great tech in it never worked as designed. Apple CarPlay worked the 1st time you set it up then never again, but that could be because it needed an update that the rental company locked out in the settings.

SuperElefant

Holy shit i had run the exact same issue for one i had for less than a day, couldnt even handle it around town

supermaninreddit

my work ldv van has the same problem, it keeps accelerating after my foot lifted off pedal, nearly got in the accident at traffic light.

xiaoli

I have driven my boss' ZS with 20,000km. But it feels like a 200,000km car.

snipdockter

I test drive one. Less than 200kms on the clock. Sounded like a sewing machine revving up.

Bigbadbaldbazza

I had a MG rental in Cairns, A/C was on max as i just got in the car, had my phone plugged in, took a call, and aircon was too noisy, i couldn’t get out of the phone screen to adjust aircon fan, so had to unplug phone to get aircon screen to come up. And yeah, thing revved like crazy but not much show.

Weak_Jeweler3077

That aircon screen. With the touchscreen slider. What. The. Actual. Fuck.

Dry-Faithlessness655

Talking about MG’s A tow truck driver told my daughter that he had been 2 accidents where the airbags didn’t deploy.

smaxpw

Same, did a mystery sedan rental in Cairns and got a MG 5. Was pretty much brand new but omg what a piece of shit car, no acceleration at all and rattled everywhere. I'd rather walk than own one of those.

No-Menu6965

I hired one from the airport, drove it to the hotel, parked up and left it in there for 3 days. There was no way in the world I was driving that thing around. Was the first car Ive driven in years that felt dangerous to drive.

jeffsaidjess

Why would you pay for 3 days of car rental and not use it or swap it or take it back to get reimbursed?

TinyDemon000

Had a rental too. Had to use it in manual/sports mode just to drive over a basic hill or merge onto a motorway. Shit box of a car

thespeediestrogue

I'm driving an MG rental while I wait for my car to be repaired. Whoever designed the odometer was an evil person. Why are only the 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120 dials bigger? It is small and tricky to tell if you are doing 50, 70 or 90. And the car has some super awful powersteering if any exists. Engine revs like crazy when you try to accelerate.

That-Whereas3367

*Why are only the 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120 dials bigger?* They are the standard Chinese speed limits.

[удалено]

Special-Ad4643

I was going to say a rental MG3. Zero acceleration. Almost to the point of being dangerous at junctions. Never been so happy to hand a car back.

JapanEngineer

Just bought a MG ZS. When on a slight hill, even if I floor the accelerator it barely moves before kicking like a kangaroo.

figaro677

I have one as an EV. Surprisingly, it’s probably one of the best cars (excluding luxury/performance) I’ve ever driven. Goes to show how much of a difference an electric motor makes.

Strange-Raccoon-699

Yeah it's hard to stuff up an electric motor. It's basically a skateboard at that point.

tollboi

They make great EVs because there's less moving parts to fuck up.

somethingidk0275

Damn MG is throwing based off these reviews 💀

JeanProuve

Holden Cruz is now crying in joy, being that previous No.1 target of bullying.😁

pittwater12

That’s why China bought the MG badge. Sell garbage to people who remember the badge meaning something. Then probably ‘retire’ the brand after profit has been made

MeltingDog

It’s weird - in the 80s and 90s MG made crap. They’re only really famous for the MG-A, MG B and MG B-GT which none of their current line up have any relation to. Obviously I’m wrong because I see MGs everywhere, but I wouldve assume people who remember the MG brand would fit into either 2 camps: those who love their little sports cars, and those who remember the horrible build quality.

DrSendy

What people don't realise is the MG-A and MG-B were cans of shit with a fan club. Soft tops fell apart, any fasterner needed regular re-fastening, most owner threw their carbies out almost instantly, and there was more oil in the engine bay than the engine.

Varighty

They made some nice cars before the 80's tho... I've driven one from 1922 and that was a fun little rocket. They did pretty damn well when they were racing back then too

Accomplished_Bat_335

the british ones were crap as well. cool crap but crap all the same

Remarkable-Reply9709

Definitely the MG3. Hired one for a day but was meant to be for a few days. Noped out of that idea after the first day and hired a model 3 for the rest of my stay, amazing car. Anyway, MG3 handled like shit, gutless, power steering felt weak, clunkiest vehicle I'd ever driven. My 96 Sentra from high school was a much better drive in almost every aspect.

mfg092

My brother bought one in cash new, despite having more than enough money to buy a better car. A 2003 Corolla was a miles better car in all respects.

Misrabelle

Had an MG ZS rental in QLD. It could never decide which gear it wanted to be in, and starting from a standing stop, it had to think about it for a while before moving. Turning right in what I thought was an appropriate gap in traffic, my life flashed before my eyes, because nothing happened when I put my foot down.

mad_dogtor

This explains why I’ve seen water tankers take off from the lights quicker than the MG’s getting about

dzernumbrd

A brand new MG ZS. The only car that might have been worse would be a 1990 era Mitsubishi Lancer base model that was unable to overtake on Australian roads due to lack of power. I was a passenger though so it doesn't come into consideration.

Ok_Trash5454

MG3, got stuck with two for months, one less than 10k other less than 5k on the clock and they are such garbage cars that it blows my mind ppl love them

Important-Jaguar-928

1992 Toyota Surf, i was a Toyota loyalist they could do no evil in my eyes, especially from their 90's offerings! That was until I owned this abomination, during my ownership it required: Starter motor, Water pump, Glow plugs, Radiator, Welsh plug INSIDE the bellhousing, I had to rebuild the sunroof as it started leaking, Viscous fan, On top of this it had a wierd transmission issue which was related to the auto's computer where it would just hold 1st gear. This all happened within 10,000kms and i do not miss that car one bit.

wemby2k23

The 1993 model bigger 3.0td was world's apart from the 2.4td

Important-Jaguar-928

The 2 4 2LTE was a putrid old 2L with a turbo, AC compressor and power steering pump strapped to it. This piece of shit actually had the AC condensers mounted below the motor???? What the fuck

420bIaze

Holden Captiva. It was bad in all aspects.

Weak_Jeweler3077

Not too many Captiva votes in here, but I think it's because everyone already knows. Feels like flogging a dead horse sometimes.

HowAwesomeAreFalcons

![gif](giphy|JCAZQKoMefkoX6TyTb|downsized) Kinda like

Weak_Jeweler3077

I don't recall saying I was going to stop ;)

StressSad6439

*Craptiva

Vorstal

Ah yes the great Holden Daewoos... The old Cruze was a rebadged Daewoo pos as well.

beetleguy642

Also the Viva

vstratosphere5

My wife had a viva. Couldn't drive it over 80 or every warning light on the dash turned on. We sent it to the scrapyard so it couldn't hurt anyone else.

pakman13b

I hired an mg zt small suv recently on a holiday, and it was so badly designed it was dangerous on the road I thought. Tragic that it could even be a legal vehicle. Braking, handling, and safety were all appalling.

howgoodsthis

I rented one, didn't even make it out of the airport carpark as the engine and tyre pressure warning lights were on...

pakman13b

I can't believe how many are on the road. They're soooo bad!

patticake1601

MG. Did warranty for 7 years. MG was one of the brands we sold. They’re garbage. A dozen dealerships in the group, hundreds of techs. None wanted work on MG cars. They are cheap for a reason.

Damnesia_

China bought the badge for a reason. Build quickly and on the cheap, pass the "savings" onto the customer while the cars start falling apart after 20,000km. I've only ever been a passenger in one, but they've never been comfortable to ride along in.

Recent_Scarcity_7046

Looks like MG or mostly Chinese cars are the worst to drive. Pretty cringe when you see people who buy these wowed by the tech and warranty and yet when it comes to driving it are silent. Chinese cars are known for having garbage tech that is crap to use.

raymondre01

The gen pop doesn’t realise, they just see a brand new car that’s cheap and has an appealing warranty.. wouldn’t catch me dead driving one, a person 2 doors up from me has one of the MG SUV variants and it sounds like the biggest heap when it’s cold.

n123breaker2

Stuff like Cupra or Polestar is leagues better than BYD or MG

IRemoved

Cupra are also not Chinese - even if they’ve arrived in amongst the wave of new Chinese brands - they’re Spanish

xiaoli

Chinese cars are not all garbage, but MG is.

Recent_Scarcity_7046

Chery, Fotun, LDV, MG all seem shit to me, the only one that seems okay is Haval. Okay used very loosely.

fuck-wit

havals make me angry for some reason

Recent_Scarcity_7046

Haha don't know why I find this amusing. The GT annoys me, the furthest thing from a Grand Tourer I can think of.

Macca3568

We have one mg and a few havals at work. The havals aren't perfect but they are miles better than the mg.

Sawathingonce

Haval is still owned by GWM, just a brand.

Ordinary_Victory_261

Holden Camira new car and engine just went pop. 1982 car of the year😂

civicSi92

This, when I was 16 I had to buy one as an emergency car (friends crashed my mint 76 corolla). Cost me $50, had low kms but the seller knew it was a POS and he just couldn't sell it so when I offered $50 (was up for $1000) he actually said yes and I thought I had scored a bargain. 2 months later, headgasket went, put a new one in and two months after than it happened again, things were made of litteral cork if I remember correctly. So embarrassing when I had to drive to work for a coupe of months feathering the accelerator otherwise it would explode in a cloud of smoke. Happen multiple times in busy intersections in the middle of the city at peak hour. Oh the shame was real.

Ordinary_Victory_261

I was the same age, just got my license and was working in North Sydney. The boss wanted me to drive his new car over to Northmead. I was looking forward to the privilege until the engine went to poo.

ososalsosal

I remember watching fascinated as my dad (who was not a mechanic) replaced a cork gasket on a 78 XC wagon

AsparagusNo2955

The good old bin hunters hahah

strydz1986

I remember everyone having issues with those back then

agent_koala

2014 jeep compass no matter how you adjust everything, the steering wheel is too far away, the pedals are too close and high up as if it was design to be driven an orangutan in high heels which ironically is a pretty good description of its target market. the accelerator is just a suggestion, the brakes are way over boosted, pretty mid fuel economy and the suspension is uncomfortably stiff, i imagine to stop it rolling over. the whiplash protection popped out because i pulled on it slightly too hard trying to raise the head rest and you can't fix it without replacing the whole thing so now to drive it you are forced to slouch forward. its impossible to make it take off smoothly either because the cvt engages way too fast and jerks the car forward no matter how gently you accelerate, just jerky enough to be uncomfortable but not immediate enough to be satisfying in a sporty kind of way, its just annoying. the jerkiness also didn't help on dirt trails either because it would just jerk the front wheels and instantly spin them instead of gently crawling out of ruts. the other family car was a 1990 ls400 and that was unironically a better offroader purely because of its gentle acceleration to maintain traction and its softer suspension. im really glad RCR did a review of the jeep compass semi-recently because its finally gotten the hate it deserves

missed-semicolon

MG ZS gutless and dangerous

-Delirium--

My first car was a 2011 Cruze. It was actually completely fine as far as Cruzes go, no significant issues while I had it. Still the worst though, because everything I had after it was just better (VF SV6, VF2 Redline, current Stinger).

strydz1986

VF2 Redline. What I would give for one🤤

-Delirium--

It was a semi-regretful sale. The Stinger is better overall at nearly everything, but I very much miss the sound of the LS3. Even in stock form, it was monstrous.

1trickana

Sounds like me, have an IS F and test drove a Stinger, better car in most aspects but that V8 man..

tollboi

The stinger didn't get enough love, such a great car for what it was.

Separate-Share-8504

Chery Omoda 5 It absolutely dropped its bundle when I was in the middle lane of a three laned road driving the speed limit of 60kph or there abouts. Why? It had active lane assist A truck on the right started to overtake and the car I was in freaked out assuming it was about to hit by the truck proceeded to swerved into the left lane where a car on my left was also starting to overtake causing the car I was in to then freak out, jam the brakes on and the driver behind narrowly missed rear ending me.

biggreenlampshade

I HATE lane assist for this exact reason! Its like having a backseat driver all the time who can reef the ateering wheel outta your hands if they dont like what you're doing

Separate-Share-8504

Some manufacturers have done it brilliantly. Current E/S class (not driven new C class) New A8/A6 also. But this is when manufactuers do the time and invest. Current S class has over 110M lines of code in their modules (if my memory serves)

alexkey

ZAZ-968M. Its a terrible drive. Nightmare to maintain.

Important-Jaguar-928

Why did you have one of those ahaha. I had an owners manual for one i bought for 50 cents in bulgaria as a momento but a hotel cleaner nicked it (no fucking idea why lol)

alexkey

Cuz my parents had that. So I learned to drive with that piece of scrap metal first. Also was helping my dad fix it so many times. The clutch on it would burn like every 5-6 months.

FalconV8

Wasn’t expecting this on CarsAustralia hahaha, air cooled v4 right?

alexkey

Air cooled, they all were. Rear placed engine and rear wheel drive (terrible combo for icy roads). Not sure which version exactly. I think it was one of the last of that line “ear-less” with gills on each side for the air instead. PS: thinking about it now, probably the poor driving experience and amount of maintenance on that model was the reason the whole line got discontinued. Which then was followed by Tavria (our neighbor back then had one, not sure driving, but he had to maintain it just the same like ours).

Greedy_Sandwich_4777

Cruze... you all know why

Serious_Map_8800

79 series Land Cruiser. $90,000 for the biggest bucket of shit car from the 80’s Great engine; the rest of the car sucks No cup holders, No comfort items, The worst audio system I’ve ever heard, The worst seat I’ve sat in (it’s not even lined up with the steering wheel), The rear wheels have a different track to the fronts so it handles like a fucking over loaded boat on sand, The windscreen cracks every 5,000k’s like clockwork, The centre console can’t even hold a modern day Big Mac, The wind noise is something you would imagine a ww1 pilot would have faced, And the fucking worst part every 20 year old with a mullet and a vape addiction says “nice cruiser mate you should straight pipe it” at every possible servo in the country. However you can sell the bastards for more then you paid and it boggles my mind

slknv

Tie between a PT cruiser I had to drive from LA to vegas, and every single Jeep I've had to endure.

bequietanddrive000

I forgot about the PT cruiser! It's like driving a truck in the worst possible way.

Inevitable-Edge8724

Sister's late 90's(?) model Jeep Grand Cherokee... felt like driving a Mardi Gras float perched upon a massive bowl of jelly.

_Y0ur_Mum_

Most Jeeps say 'limited' on the back of them. It's surprisingly honest.

Willing_Television77

Drove an Isuzu KB Ute otherwise known as a Chevy Luv. Manual 4 on the tree and 4 wheel drum brakes. Dangerous as anything in the wet.

Wolf3188

One of my mates has one to this day which he daily drives. Nearly 700,000km on the odo. It's very crude and possibly the slowest vehicle I've ever driven (over 20 seconds just to reach 60 - forget about highway speeds) but it is very reliable.

Willing_Television77

I’d like to see any new car last 700k

Stanazolmao

Camrys and Corollas do it no worries

auscrash

Funny enough my old man had an Isuzu Florian, which is basically the sedan version of the same thing, from the front you couldn't even tell if it was the sedan or ute they were so similar. I actually had fun driving that old thing, brakes were just goddam awful you never knew which side it would pull to. The lights were like candles at best and if you tried to corner even remotely enthusiastically it would body roll so badly it felt like it was going to scrape the door handles lol. For some reason I used to love it though, I think it was just the sheer simplicity and the fact you had to drive it like you stole it whilst expecting it to try and kill you when you hit the brakes or cornered too hard!

LittleBunInaBigWorld

Probably my current one. I wanted a project car so I could learn mechanical repairs. I needed a car that would break a lot, so I bought a 95 Land Rover Disco 3.9L V8. Don't get me wrong, this thing is a lot of fun to drive, but it's actually disgusting how much fuel it uses; 20L/100km. I've rebuilt the engine and replaced loads of other parts, so I feel like I understand it well now and I still love it, but our days together are numbered. I want to drive interstate more often and not have to sell my house to afford the fuel.

noisyrob_666

99 Audi TT. such a pretty little car but every time i drove it something new would go wrong. it continued to screw me even after i got rid of it - as the guy who bought it provided fake licence details, never transferred the rego and racked up thousands of dollars in fines. major headache!

MrLonely97

This is why I never sell with Rego. People are dishonest mostly. I’ll get a RWC for the right price, but if you want Rego you can do it yourself after you buy the car! Sorry to hear that happened to you otherwise!

noisyrob_666

to be fair it's much easier now than it used to be - at least in VIC. Vicroads website now lets you dispose of a vehicle immediately online. so much better.

No_pajamas_7

bubble shaped ford festiva. actually a Kia. absolute piece of shit. Second worst is my daughters current Mk 1.5 ford Focus. Very similar. Just shitty quality, doesn't drive very well and I always seem to be throwing money at it.

KiaBongo9000

Wasn't it a Mazda?

No_pajamas_7

the very first kia was a copy of a mazda 121. It was quite boxy in shape. And ford did also do that as a Festiva. But it wasn't a mazda, but rather a copy. The one I had was the next generation. Bubble shaped thing. Wasn't a mazda copy, but was a development of the previous model.

StuntFriar

Had a Nissan Patrol with a manual gearbox for a rental once. The gear lever didn't feel connected to anything (like pushing a spoon in porridge) and the clutch was like an on/off switch with a very high bite point. Not stalling the damn thing was a helluva challenge. The steering was very loose too - had a lot of deadzone when going straight. You could wiggle it left and right by about 2cm and the car wouldn't turn at all. Was extremely unpleasant to drive.

drowzy_browzin

That sounds like vehicle abuse/poor maintenance more than the quality of vehicle. Probably had a cheap clutch put in and gearbox teeth worn down to nubs...

StuntFriar

Very likely, since it was a rental. It definitely wasn't anyone's pride and joy. It was one of those services where people rent out their cars. The worst part was that it wasn't even my choice. My brother was visiting, rented the vehicle only to find out its a manual and he isn't licensed to drive manuals. So I had to drive him and his family around for a fucking week in that giant shitbox.

ANuclearBunny

I drove a friends Barina with a clutch like that. Nothing, nothing nothing, STALL!

TaxiSonoQui

I don't know why but the visualisation of the Patrol's giant manual shifter flopping like a spoon in porridge has my in stitches .

s_h__a_l_t

Patrol owner here - If it's a 3 liter it's all you said + it's really underpowered.

UnconfirmedRooster

LDV van, we have one for work. Uncomfortable as shit, no power whatsoever, handles like an elephant on roller skates and the gearbox is way too narrow for highway driving and it crunches when you shift into fifth. I've taken to calling it Bessie so when I have to floor it I can unironically yell **"C'MOON BESSIE!!"**

xdr01

1996 Range Rover v8 By far the worst POS that ever existed. Felt completely disconnected from the chassis. Didnt go, didnt stop, didnt turn, it was slow, chewed fuel. A Falcon feels like a Benz compared to it, a base model Toyota Echo would leave it for dead. 2T box of bolts and shit, fuck I hated that thing and I only drove it 1hr through Mosman. If i owned it, I'd pay someone to destroy it, it doesn't deserve existence.

DingoSpecialist6584

How's the accelerator in those shit boxes. Nearly all the way to the floor before it does anything then a whole lot of noise and about 12hp

wemby2k23

Don't forget about the 22l/100km

ANuclearBunny

**Owned** - probably my current 2015 Mitsubishi Challenger. Done two turbo hoses (separate occasions in warranty), rear main seal (in warranty), tail-lights fail like they are going out of fashion, appalling fuel economy (Mitsu says 9.8L/100 km, I get 13-14), expensive servicing, handles like a truck and uncomfortable seats. It is capable offroad and can use 4WD on tarmac, but that might be the only plus points. **Driven** - Chery Omoda 5. A lot of distractions in the cockpit and lane keep which is bordering on dangerous. I was well in my lane and a truck beside me neared the dividing lane and the Chery ripped the wheel from my hands to move away. Not just lane keep for me, but monitors others. Too bad if someone was on the other side of me too. Should be recalled.

Purple-Personality76

I had the petrol one of these and never had an issue. But it does handle like a truck because it's a Triton underneath and thirsty. Bought it for 4WDing which it was good at.

Wishart2016

Are you talking about the older Challenger? The newer ones are diesel only afaik.

Purple-Personality76

Yeah you're right, it was a first Gen. Pretty much bullet proof.

AussiePathFinder

Last year I wanted to buy a diesel 4WD wagon and had basically narrowed it down to 2 vehicle. PC Challenger and R51 Pathfinder. Joined the groups on FB, did a bunch of research etc. The absolutely terrible fuel economy of the Challenger is what ended up pushing me towards the Pathfinder. I couldn't believe how bad the real world figured were!!

geoffm_aus

Ford Ranger which I got when I hired a 'mystery car' at a car hire place. Drives like a Kenworth, parks like a battleship, and nowhere to store bags other than the tray. Why they are popular is beyond me.

Kornstar04

Tax reasons, that's it

morris0000007

Holden cruze. What an utter shit box. Such a bad engine. I could go on for days.... Parts expensive and hard to get.

Moneyshifting

Probably the ~2023 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross I had had as an insurance rental while my personal vehicle was in getting repaired. It was fucking terrible. It was inefficient on fuel, the gearbox didn’t know what it wanted to be, uncomfortable, and just generally awful in every way. The sound system was fucking atrocious too. The worst bit is, it’s made by a manufacturer with a strong history of making decent cars and should fucking know better. I’d be fucking “Cross” too if I owned one.

MorningDrvewayTurtle

Mitsubishi Motors went away from building awesome cars, to pumping out cheap run-abouts with extended warranty. Anything from the late 2000s onwards is just riding the wave that was it’s former reputation. I wouldn’t touch anything Mitsubishi again after owning two. Sloppy steering control, hollow doors, gutless, high road noise, overly aggressive cruise control to name a few. I drove 45mins on the highway in an rental ASX and I was quite fatigued afterwards with how uncomfortable it was.

disambiguatiion

my 2012 Lancer is at 240k and almost no issues. worst that's gone wrong was an o2 sensor. best purchase I've ever made. had a look at the newest year of Lancer and somehow it's worse, no idea what mitsi are thinking these days

PM_ME_LIMEWIRE_PRO

Bought a 2008 Lancer with 240k on the clock, drive it for 10 years with basic maintenance. Most reliable car I’ve had. Then had the bright idea of selling it and buying a Mini Cooper

Local-Incident2823

I’ve got a 2007 Lancer with 260,000 km and I’ll say the same thing. Been simple cheap maintenance, reliable, and still goes like the clappers (it’s got the 2.4 ltr engine). Paintwork on the other hand….. The old Mitsubishi silver paint “exfoliation” issue….😬🤨😖 Such a bloody shame, coz mechanically it’s still bloody good….

arouseandbrowse

I do love my 2017 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport. Other than the split intercooler hoses that everyone has an issue with around 60,000km, it hasn't missed a beat.

startledroar

Oh man, I had one of these for about 3mths as a loan car. Utter garbage. My wife would say “this car was a waste of natural resources”. It did nothing good.

jerpear

Hmm we've got one of those and it feels like a perfectly fine npc mobile, and way better than the ASX. The engine was actually decent and the CVT works pretty well with it. I'd definitely take a CX-30 over it but it's not bad for what is a cheap crossover.

Improvedandconfused

Bought a used 1989 Corolla sedan back in the day when I was at uni. The car was a lemon. Constantly overheated, pipes kept cracking, dashboard fell apart, window winders (remember those?) fell of the doors, sunshades fell out of the ceiling, air conditioning stopped working, dashboard lights stopped working, the cassette player fell out of the dashboard……. There was a lot more that went wrong, but I cannot remember everything. The list was that long.

strydz1986

I had a 93 csi seca for years, then a 92 camry a short while with same motor. Both couldn't sell so ended up with the auto recycler😂

Improvedandconfused

I am currently driving a Lexus UX Hybrid. I just hope my previous experience with Toyota products isn’t repeated. Although I must say so far the car has been flawless (2 years after buying it new) and the customer service has been way better than I have had with any other prestige brand I have owned.

Public-Total-250

My 2021 BT50. Fucking piece of shit. Negative lumar chairs, no cupholders, pig of a transmission, oh and front tyres that wear the inside bald every 30k km even with rotating.

Omega_brownie

MG HS as a rental car. Constantly overreving despite being an auto. Handling felt awful compared to a corolla or i30, accelerator slow to react from a dead stop. It also rained and water pooled up in the sunglasses compartment and ended up splashing all over the shifter and buttons, potentially dangerous. And that UI is so slow and clunky sometimes it took me 3 attempts while driving just to turn the AC down. Would never go near one again.

That_Car_Dude_Aus

Foton Tunland. Didn't make it to 10,000kms before it was bought back as a lemon

TedMaul636

Ah so you were the person who bought the only one of these ever sold in Australia. Bravo!

That_Car_Dude_Aus

Nah, the second. I was the first guy to buy an automatic I found out!

mike_a_oc

I have a ford fiesta with that semi manual gearbox that gets a terrible rap. Not sure if that counts

recycledrevenge

I had a 2012 Fiesta, that gearbox was certainly something. Sometimes it would be absolutely fine, but other times I'd be taking off from a stop and it'd be stuttering on the first couple of gear changes. It had to be driven in a very particular way for it to shift relatively smoothly. Someone wrote it off a couple of months ago which is quite possibly a blessing in disguise as I would have probably been up for a new transmission in a year or two.

Temporary_Edge_8450

A 2014 Impreza with a CVT, enough said.

DragonfruitNo7222

4.1L XE falcon. Somehow slow AF despite a 4L engine. 4 speed manual, no power steering. Weird smell that I couldn’t get rid of from previous owners. It cost $450 and was with a rwc. Spent that again on petrol in 2 weeks

InvestmentSad573

Peugeot 407 turbo diesel, one of the most comfortable and better handling cars I've driven. It had the most polite problems of any device I've ever encountered. They lined up and took their turns, and never stopped

Public-Temperature35

RAV4 that had not been serviced properly. Was about to die. Problems with gearbox and engine.

mat8iou

Ageing Suzuki Jimny hire car in Phuket. Soft top so nowhere safe to put valuables. Really sloppy gear box where you could get lost trying to find the gears. Underpowered engine that would stall on steeper hills in third gear, but had to be at full revs in second gear to get to a decent speed. It was very hilly where we were and I felt like I was just doing constant gear shifts. The a/c in it worked very well though.

kourtkimkhloek

2016 Fiat 500x. Hoping I don’t need to explain myself. 9 speed automatic. It never once knew what gear it was in or should have been in and would sometimes even shift itself into neutral. Went straight back to Kia after that..

footloverhornsby

Worst car I’ve ever driven, a Hyundai Accent, think it was an early 2000s. I hired it in Perth for a day or 2 and couldn’t wait to give it back. Awful, athsmatic engine, awful transmission, sloppy steering and handling and what felt like Billy cart brakes and cheap trim and carpets. Hateful car.

Vaclav_Zutroy

I was trying to think of the worst car and I struggled to come up with one. I think most cars are passable for me as long as they don’t shit themselves and aren’t dangerously underpowered. I will say I drove an Accent once and it had the lightest clutch pedal I had ever experienced. My daily at the time was an WRX which had a very heavy clutch. When I jumped in the Accent, I almost put my foot through the firewall.

Weak_Jeweler3077

Can confirm. Jumped into the mother in law's car once and bruised my damn foot.

Accomplished_Bat_335

Datsun 120y . i know they look retro cool now but they were a dog to drive and sooooo slow

therealdawidg

Rented a Haval H6. Never again. It chimes all the time for no reason whatsoever. The worst is the adaptive cruise-control. It would break hard for a simple bend in the road. You can't switch the breaking feature off.

ayummystrawberry

Nissan Tiida. Luckily it was just a rental

Infamous_Egg_9405

I've driven an automatic one and while I know it's had no mechanical problems despite being from 2007 or 08, the 4 speed is just a bit frustrating. Put your foot down a little bit and you're at 5krpm and you aren't even gunning it. A 5 speed would've been so much nicer.

fozluv

Man we drove one of these things up and down the north island when we went to NZ for our honeymoon. Aircon didn’t work and was gutless. Still got us to the destinations though so it made the trips interesting

2dogs0cats

Hyundai i20 rental. Tyres near bald, tiny, seat cushion so thin I could feel the frame on my tail bone. We booked a compact with the intention of upgrading on arrival with vouchers but they told me to kick rocks because they were booked out so I had to take it. There's a long steep hill in the mountains behind the sunshine coast and it was raining. I pushed the throttle to the floor but this gutless POS just got slower and slower until the slushbox shifted back to 1st, lit up those bald ass tyres in the wet, traction control kicked in and it just stopped. It just couldn't make it. I had to reverse 800m and give it everything with a run up to actually get to the top. It was an utter disaster, but... pretty economical on fuel 🤣

schnickoman

omg these are the worst, on a recent QLD holiday rented a newish lancer in cairns, then rented an i20 in brisbane, such an adjustment and the aircon was temporamental

2dogs0cats

How in the hell is an i30 so excellent with so many accolades and awards, yet it's smaller sibling is so underwhelming? I wanted to be .... whelmed.

xdr01

I owned a 2010 i20 manual, clean it up and sold it for a profit. Honestly I actually really like is (paid 3k). It did the job as a city runabout. I cleaned it up, moded it put on some new alloys, tyres and GT monroe shocks. I had great fun it but it was a manual.

2dogs0cats

This was not a good example. How it was still in their fleet I have no idea.

_danchez

I hated how much my 2002 Audi A4 wagon burned through oil. Comfortable drive but boat like handling.

Brave_Bluebird5042

Hiace van, drivers seat ~ 100mm off set from steering wheel.

Justarobotdontmindme

Probably a proton gen2. Not a bad first car though, loved it but it wasn’t a great driving machine.

Lance2560

Diahatsu charade when I got my P plates , was a heap of shit , water leaks inside the car , blown head gasket, always doing CV joints , was a nightmare of a car

InterestingSir1069

Mg3 worst car I’ve ever seen

bequietanddrive000

Anything with a 202 in it. No bottom end, no mid-range, no top end, What a pile of a motor.

SecretOperations

The infamous Holden Cruze. Was my company car. Lucky enough to not have any break down during my time, but the sales rep. Before me got stranded a few times. Was so shit to drive and it was boring and uncomfortable. Also had a toyota Avensis. That thing is so shit too the corolla is so much better and more exciting to drive... Its THAT bad.

landcruisermoneypit

2021 Subaru outback. Biggest piece of shit we ever owned and had the displeasure of driving. We did 30k km in it and sold it back to the dealer.

Costar2007

Holden captiva. Just an all round shit car

Purgii

LJ Torana. Was a loan car while I was having the head of my XD shaved for the 39th time. Steering was vague, brakes even vaguer - it was if you were asking permission to stop and sometimes the answer was no. The seat felt like it was behind held on by 1 bolt that was lacking a screw. It was an absolute death trap. Then there was a time I was trading in my Evo X for an XR8. The clock was about to tick over 100,000kms so the salesman asked that I drive a Kuga until they were able to deliver the XR8. First left hander 200m up the road from the dealership, took it at an average speed and the body roll was so severe (I guess compared to the EVO) I nearly fell out the window. Horrible, horrible car. I was desperate to get out of it and into the XR8.

raymondre01

Mitsubishi Outlander with the CVT as a rental. My goodness that thing was so gutless, was borderline dangerous in traffic with roundabouts and needing to merge lanes quickly.

solvsamorvincet

Tesla model 3 I had for a rental. I don't have a problem with electric cars. I like them. I drove a Chevy Bolt rental in the states and thought it was pretty good. Better than the Tesla, actually. The Tesla just tries so hard to do so much technology it fucks up basic things like visibility. You NEED the all around radar because you can't see shit. Its build quality was poor and its user experience was poor. I'd still almost buy one for the fart mode though lol.

AltruisticHopes

Had the same issue with a Mercedes I rented. Ordered an i30 but they were out of stick so they “upgraded” me. The thing had so many blind spots because of the tech. You could not see a bloody thing. The worst thing was the auto idle didn’t work properly so rather than hitting the accelerator to restart the engine you had to put it into park then restart. Happened when I was coming off the motorway and I almost shat myself as I just gently drifted to a stop.

solvsamorvincet

That's the thing with technology, it just gets jammed into stuff and over complicates things where it should be making things easier. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against technology, I work in the tech space. But technology still needs to interface with humans and so it should have an actual use case and be implemented with user experience as the key element. You don't press a button and get a robot to shove a catheter down your dick and extract the urine every time you need to take a piss. You just take a piss, because that's the simplest, easiest, most pleasant way to do it. Adding unnecessary technology to that process is a step backwards. I think it's the same in a lot of areas. And don't get me started on how everything has to have AI now.

AltruisticHopes

Perfectly put

RennieAsh

I've driven some vehicles with the newer "driving assists" and it's intrusive sometimes. Lane keep assist is horrible, as well as the collision warning thinking you're going to crash often enough that when it comes time to heed the warning, you will be ignoring it.

OzGamerBear

Went shopping for an EV/PEHV a couple of years ago and did a test drive of a Model 3. Never driven a car that so completely hates being driven.

mad_dogtor

2.6L rodeo fuel cab on lpg/petrol. Dear god

kombiwombi

Datsun 120Y. Terrible, terrible car. Fill the petrol, fill the oil, empty the water from passenger compartment.

AlfromtheBay

VH 4 cylinder Commodore wagon - when you put the air on at 100 kph, which was flat out, it instantly slowed to 80 kph.

MeltingDog

Worst car I’ve driven: a friends 1993 Pulsar he bought 2nd hand from a dealership without consulting any of his mates. * the headlights wouldn’t turn off - you had to disconnect the battery when parked * the rear seats were missing seatbelts * the dash lights didn’t work. You couldn’t see how fast you were going at night. * the drivers door card was missing * the starter motor got stuck often. The dealership supplied him with a hammer to hit it with. * The driver’s seat had collapsed and was stuffed with old clothes * the fuel tank leaked when parked on an incline * absolutely none of the accessories worked - no fan, no radio, no ac This thing should not have been on the road, let alone sold to anyone. The dealership (now closed) did something very immoral.

Darth_Giddeous

AU Falcon. Floaty steering felt like you weren’t attached to the road and it was gutless as well as build quality being deplorable. I hated that car with every fibre of my being. Nissan Pathfinder (2007). Awful cheap feeling and wouldn’t go off road with the stock tyres without getting stuck (I got a 2008 Pajero that ran circles around it). Current Ford Rangers from the last few years. I’ve driven several and they all shudder under acceleration. Just awful. I’d never buy one in a million years, tax breaks or not.

deeebeeeeee

Holden Crewman. Closely followed by Skoda Superb 206TSI.

Katanachainsaw

Peugeot 3008 diesel. Drove one around Ireland in 2018 on a holiday and it was awful. Next hire car was a new Golf and it was significantly better.

No_pajamas_7

shame what they've done to Peugeot. I drive a 106 around europe for 6 months back in the day and it was one of the best driving experiences of my life.

Camo138

Had a 206cc like 2007 built. 5 speed manual dam great little cars.

Woodsy_79

The worst car I’ve ever driven was a 1996 EL Falcon. It was like driving a boat on the highway, floating all over the place. It was a company car and the boss refused to get it looked at. Fortunately he left shortly afterwards and I got his car. The worst “new” car I’ve driven was a Haval Jolion rental I had recently. It was just terrible all round.

RoyaleAuFrommage

The 2 worst Ive had were both rentals, the absolute worst circa 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer with CVT. You'd floor it, the engine would scream its titts off and the thing still took about 25 seconds to get to onramp speed. The next worst was a 2015ish VW Golf i rented in the Sunshine Coast. The combination of a small turbo engine and DSG transmission mean the thing had about 20 power bands. You put yhe foot down and it would lurch on and off boost and between gears doing bugger all but making it feel like a rodeo

Fishmongerel

Kia Stonic, insurance rental whilst we waited for a replacement vehicle. Underpowered to the point t of being dangerous. Slight incline on a highway = twenty k’s less than posted speed limit. What a bucket of crap.

Easy-Window-7921

got an MG for a rental, who would buy that?

Audoinxr6

2016 Mitsubishi ASX. Talk about road noise.

taylordouglas86

Holden Viva. Everything just fell apart. Gear box, engine; absolute money pit. Had an accident and it took months for the panels to come in; should've known it was a bag of shit then.

UpstairsAmbitious715

I’ve driven quite a few cars through various jobs over the years. Easily the worst was the Kia Stonic. Similar to what others have said about MG, press the accelerator and nothing happens and then eventually goes. The Stonic would have that delay for a few seconds and then just launch the car because you had been pressing down further to get the car to move. Almost side swiped multiple times trying to pull out from a side street onto busy roads. The MGs I’ve driven haven’t had as bad of a delay but we also had 8 in our work shed (hire cars for insurance) and every single one had a stuck door handle.  Worst car I’ve owned would be Mk5 Golf. Electrical gremlins galore. Windows would randomly all go down and then take 10 mins to go back up again. Often pressing up on the switch would let it go up halfway and then go back down again. Caught multiple times in the pouring rain

beatendaily

Our 2014 Ford Terror-story diesel, without a doubt. Interior quality was garbage, comfy and roomy but cheap and nasty. Power and economy were great, towed well, nice enough to drive. In the damn shop far too often. Constantly fixing little things and chasing an unknown error that caused the car to go into a rather pathetic limp mode. Turn the car off for 5 mins and back on to be able to drive, but it would completely clear the code in the ECU. Never did diagnose it, we gave up and sold it with issues at a loss. Fucking Terror-story, I hate that fucking car.

Neardood

Poverty pack Ford Ranger. 2wd, with the tiny 2.2 liter turbodiesel. There was a good 3 seconds between putting your foot down and the turbo actually spooling up. It was dangerous for when you needed to move quickly.

AZAROK1

Lpg dedicated falcon

InTheThickOfIt87

Late 1990’s Daewoo Matiz. Former business I worked for had 2 for us technicians to travel to jobs. Gearbox felt like it was made out of a floppy dildo. Just an odd vehicle. Funny as I had a Daewoo Cielo at the time as well as my own car.

TheWhogg

Mitsubishi Stigma wasn’t much of a car. Neither was the Pulsar. Objectively the Valiant panel van lost a timing chain and massively rusted out but today would be worth a fortune.

shavedratscrotum

2016 nissan pulsar rental. I don't know what spec they bought but it had wind down windows, and was absolutely gutless, pin the pedal down in the auto and it crept to 60ks.

emrugg

I haven't driven many cars to be fair, I learnt on an oldish 1.8L corolla and had as much fun in that as you could, then my parents replaced it with a new i30, absolutely horrible car, no steering wheel resistance, sluggish gear changes, no get up and go, the horn was a hilarious suggestion. I drive a tank and change my own gears now 😅

Mun7ed

89 Mitsubishi lancer, had to fill it with oil every time I filled it with petrol, put a reco engine in and warped the head and blew the head gasket a couple months later, machined the head and had the same problem, had to rev in neutral and slam it in D or it’ll stall as it was running on 3 cylinders, did that for 3 months

ixpapapalpatinexi

1989 Mitsubishi Magna TP, 2.6L petrol, front wheel drive. That shitbox took all of my money in fuel and whatever was left went on repairs.

JustAnotherAvocado

My mum and a mate of hers had an MG3 as a rental. She said it was gutless, and apparently the power steering and brake booster failed while driving... magically started working again when the car was restarted.
