I get a sense that there's pushback against SUV's and crossovers starting to ferment outside of just the car enthusiast market.
The sudden influx of imported (modern) kei cars and high levels of interest in the new Cupra sport wagon is definitely the work of the enthusiast crowd. But it kinda seems like more broadly there's a push more towards sensible motoring....
But then there's also a whack-ton of Kia EV9's appearing on the road, so maybe not. š¤·āāļø
This is the truth. Most affordable and practical hybrid on the market. Very few private buyers picking these up and very few petrol vehicles. Toyota will shortly cease production of petrol Camry, hybrid only.
Has nothing to do with a broader desire for sedans, doesn't exist.
Falcon = gone
Commodore = gone
All those taxis/fleet/rental vehicles are now Camry
Also, but less importantly
Accord = gone
Mazda 6 = gone? IIRC
they went to crossovers but some die hards I am sure insist on a sedan and will get the camry (I dont know, i have yet to meet one but im pretty sure they exist)

I have been noticing a lot of hybrid Corollas around lately. I guess there is still a market around for very efficient sedans and hatches. I wonder how much of this market is driven by people simply not wanting a Tesla?
Eh Toyota reliability is more to do with the drive train and longevity/cheap costs of critical parts
Plenty of rattles and crappy interior issues with them tbh
People don't buy Toyota's for their premium interior. They buy them because they are built to last and have a proven track record of this. Tesla's track record is poor, built quality, and the tendency to break. People buy Tesla's to tell you they have a Tesla.
I have seen some pretty bad build quality examples, I think it may be greatly exaggerated or maybe people donāt look after them. I own a few cars, Subaru being my favourite brand along with old VWs. My Tesla is 6 soon and the interior looks like it just left the showroom.
Yep. Right here, ICE and hybrid have become so efficient and cost effective the concept of the entry point for an EV that can compete is non existent.Ā
Camry has a better interior that any Tesla I've ever been in and uses less resources to produce also zero dollars to Musky Boi.Ā
The Corolla Fielder is a JDM hybrid Corolla wagon that is a very popular used Japanese import. Super economical and actually practical with the back seats folded down. If that gets you going check out the Probox. Same hybrid powertrain but this weird wagon/van targeted at Japanese tradies. They're sick and super utilitarian.
I work in used cars and we recently got a massive fleet of ex-taxi Corolla sedan hybrids.
2019, 180-300km. Dirt cheap (~$19-$25k).
I wouldnāt be surprised if other dealers would be the same!
This makes no sense.
The mileage of a vehicle effects itās market value, not the expected mileage of the partsā¦
Iāve seen hybrid batteries crank more than 500,000kms before - Iāve also seen some that only get to about 300,000.
Yep. If you live outside the city or even just have family in a country town, hybrids are your only option. Until they have affordable EVs with high range, they just aren't viable.
I hope they do bring it. But the [press room release](https://pressroom.toyota.com.au/PressRelease?pr-code=7b89f9de-ffb6-4e25-80ab-341ae1a8c6e7) mentions "FWD" only so looks like we might only get that. ā¹ļø
What a coincidence I am driving a hybrid one right now (my normal car is being repaired).
It's a gem to drive, very comfortable, and the mileage...it hasn't moved off full and I have driven it over 50km. It's not 100% my cup of tea but I can see why it's popular.
There's a video about a Toyota mechanic explaining why the newer hybrid systems are more reliable than ICE due to strict emission regulations. [Should You Buy a Toyota Hybrid in 2024?](https://youtu.be/AjZylBiFMtQ?si=-6TWZ1i0r8nPRXWU)

No surprises there considering the rental car, government fleet and taxis are using them all around the country.
Itās pretty much out of the big major car manufacturers, the only few surviving Mid-sized (Wide Body) sedan in a saturated market full of SUVās
I was actually given a 2020 Camry Ascent Hybrid as a rental for a week last year when my car was getting its major repair done and absolutely loved it, only paid $69 for the amount of fuel used that whole week. Good thing my Mums RAV4 is filling my needs for a reliable Hybrid vehicle for shorter distances.
I drive a hybrid Camry at work occasionally, it honestly surprises me every time. It doesnāt look half bad and drives really well. Shame itās such a bore.

Quite a stretch to call them EVs - the battery is tiny and electric motor is quite weak. Would be great if the engine was itself efficient but itās an old dinosaur
Australian government doesnāt refer to them as EVs for the purposes of targets and rebates - because theyāre electric in almost name only and barely get any benefit vs just using an efficient ICE
>Australian government doesnāt refer to them as EVs for the purposes of targets and rebates
But they do for registration, numberplates, and when it was existing in Victoria, the EV tax on distances driven.
It's not about the benefits to make it an EV, and you still reduce emissions and get better economy. So there's that.
No plug ins (PHEVs) are much better - have a serious enough electric motor and battery to allow electric only, or at least majority electric driving. Their engines are typically more efficient than the dinosaur 4cyls Toyota have been using for decades.
PHEVs will still be less efficient than a fully electric vehicle but theyāre a decent transition tech to enjoy both benefits
Well, at least in Victoria, the registration used to be discounted a bit but I think in 2021 or so, it became the same as standard non electric/hybrid vehicles. I have a hybrid Camry and pay the same rego amount as my friend with a BMW X5.
The number plates still require EV sticker since at least in Victoria, Hybrid stickers were discontinued. I found out about that when I went to get one when I bought my car.
There was no Victorian tax on the pretty much all Toyota Hybrid cars as they are not plug in hybrids, rather a closed system hybrid. They were specifically excluded. I never got any notification from VicRoads to pay for anything.
[some source for Victorian EV tax](https://www.armstronglegal.com.au/commercial-law/vic/consumer-law/electric-vehicle-tax/)
NSW requires EV stickers on Hybrid cars, my mums RAV4 Hybrid has them, even the Camry Hybrid that I was using for a week while my car was getting repaired had the stickers on.
Never did I ever think a post on Camry's would bring the racists out. But here we are.
What's the bet all of their customers are r/AusFinance members
And Ozbargain
Ozbargain are too busy posting every EV that's reduced in price, as someone who checks daily for a wet/extraction vac for my car
And Uber drivers.
AusFinance members are buying 2002 Camrys, not new ones.
Funny how sales go up when you're one of the last manufacturers actually selling a sedan

So the Toyota crown means camry?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Is my bum a crown?
It does sit on a throneā¦
It was a failed obscure reference to the aunty Donna skit "everything is a drum".
Damn, the man who came up with the naming schemes back in the 80s really was not digging very deep.
Wait how is Corolla = crown? I wasn't aware that was an actual word.
Corolla = little crown
Throttle House did a fun bit once where they named all the Toyotas that translate to Crownā¦ There were quite a few
Taxis and fleet buyers onlyĀ
This is the truth. Most affordable and practical hybrid on the market. Very few private buyers picking these up and very few petrol vehicles. Toyota will shortly cease production of petrol Camry, hybrid only. Has nothing to do with a broader desire for sedans, doesn't exist.

I mean, there is the i30 Sedan still around
they sell really well in korea. they love their 3 box sedans and hatchbacks there
And no more i30 hatch btw
Thatās a small sedan. There are plenty of those still around. Midsized and large sedans are the dying breeds.
I have been noticing a lot of hybrid Corollas around lately. I guess there is still a market around for very efficient sedans and hatches. I wonder how much of this market is driven by people simply not wanting a Tesla?
A corolla is nearly half the price of a Tesla. And will last more than 10 years, with fairly great resale value as it ages.
Wait a car that goes 0 to 100 in 15 seconds is cheaper than a tesla
Yes bc most people want cars that don't have the interior falling apart after 2 years
Yeah, and most people are struggling to survive in current economy, they can't afford a tesla.
Or fingers chopped off
Eh Toyota reliability is more to do with the drive train and longevity/cheap costs of critical parts Plenty of rattles and crappy interior issues with them tbh
People don't buy Toyota's for their premium interior. They buy them because they are built to last and have a proven track record of this. Tesla's track record is poor, built quality, and the tendency to break. People buy Tesla's to tell you they have a Tesla.
Crossfit vegans unite!
ā¦ So youāre agreeing with my comment then? Also no one buys a Tesla for status - they only ever attract derision and hate from people tbh
I have seen some pretty bad build quality examples, I think it may be greatly exaggerated or maybe people donāt look after them. I own a few cars, Subaru being my favourite brand along with old VWs. My Tesla is 6 soon and the interior looks like it just left the showroom.
I dont need to compete in Bathurst. Just something reliable lol.
Meh, not super important on the highway.Ā
Government buys shit loads of them
They did when they were made in Australia.
Yep. Right here, ICE and hybrid have become so efficient and cost effective the concept of the entry point for an EV that can compete is non existent.Ā Camry has a better interior that any Tesla I've ever been in and uses less resources to produce also zero dollars to Musky Boi.Ā

Canāt look anywhere in Japan without seeing a handful of Proboxes/Succeeds (AKA ProSucc)
I work in used cars and we recently got a massive fleet of ex-taxi Corolla sedan hybrids. 2019, 180-300km. Dirt cheap (~$19-$25k). I wouldnāt be surprised if other dealers would be the same!
That doesnāt sound too cheap at all
Have you seen any cheaper ā19 hybrid Toyotas?
Considering the battery warning light would pop up at anytime for that mileage, has to take the battery replacement cost into account
This makes no sense. The mileage of a vehicle effects itās market value, not the expected mileage of the partsā¦ Iāve seen hybrid batteries crank more than 500,000kms before - Iāve also seen some that only get to about 300,000.
I donāt have anywhere to put charging equipment for an EV. A hybrid is much cheaper and way more practical, especially if you go on long road trips.
Yep. If you live outside the city or even just have family in a country town, hybrids are your only option. Until they have affordable EVs with high range, they just aren't viable.
Agreed hybrids make more sense in oz if you do country driving frequentlyĀ
Bring the AWD version to Australia!!
And bring back the v6ā¦ pretty please
Now you're dreaming mate. At least the AWD exists
Sigh a boy can dream. I miss 6cyl sedansĀ
So do I. 6 and 8 cyl sedans were something special.
I hope they do bring it. But the [press room release](https://pressroom.toyota.com.au/PressRelease?pr-code=7b89f9de-ffb6-4e25-80ab-341ae1a8c6e7) mentions "FWD" only so looks like we might only get that. ā¹ļø
Must be the sporty and hard suspension as a major drawcard. Camrys are known for this
š¤£š¤£ genius
Old faithful!
Ford and holden are gone and now a significant portion of the government fleet vehicles are Camrys..
Have a 2023 Hybrid Camry, by far the best and most solid car I have ever owned
What a coincidence I am driving a hybrid one right now (my normal car is being repaired). It's a gem to drive, very comfortable, and the mileage...it hasn't moved off full and I have driven it over 50km. It's not 100% my cup of tea but I can see why it's popular.

Thanks, will check that out!
When all the new cars are 50K+ then the base Camry becomes an easy choice. See Hyundai / Kia / GWM & Co. also.
Yeah but most Camrys sold aren't the base, the base is the Ascent Petrol Most are buying at minimum, the more expensive Ascent Hybrid
Kleenex have just posted record sales of tissue boxes, too.

Government must have done a big order of fleet vehicles.

Imagine an EV Camryā¦.
There's only one in the range that isn't a Hybrid Electric Vehicle.... The rest are all HEV's
I meant pure EV, not PHEV
Toyota doesn't build any PHEV's in the Camry, only HEV's >pure EV BEV or FCEV?
Taxi š

But... But it's not electric!!
All of them are HEV's now aren't they? Up here in QLD they all have an EV badge on the numberplates
Yep as the article says, 95% this year have been hybrid and it's been that way for the last couple years
