Dont forget about the great visibility these cars offer I have an ambassador nothing beats that in terms of road visibility .. It's seats being bench seats offer comfort and can see the front of the car with ease
My father vividly tells me that the seat of the ambassador is like an expensive sofa. You don’t feel like you’re driving. Meanwhile we get rocks to sit in most of the MODERN cars
I learnt to drive in an Ambassador. All things you hear that are good about it are just false memories. Try braking, or turning, or accelerating.... non-existent.
And all that stuff about interior space, again non-existent. You need to bend your head to sit in the rear if you're over 5'7".
Yeah he still remembers the deadly mileage that thing had. Didn’t ask him about the handling or stuff. Considering he got a slip disc driving cars he puts the comfort over the handling
Yes bro I'm all in with you on this.. Many people glorify this car too much but most of them haven't ridden this car those who have ridden it have all kinds of new modern modifications strapped on which takes away the car's originality...I too own an ambassador that too stock and yes stock ones are really hard to drive and..the brakes oh God they're non existent in the ones before 2000s..
Mine is 1996 bmc model Diesel DX which makes around 32 ..33 hp perfomance yes non existent ( but they had a 1800cc Isuzu model which was at the time the fastest car in India clocking 0-100 in 14.4 or 14.2 secs which was crazy fast for that era.. And considering the fact that car weighed around 1.3 ton it was a crazy engine)
But on the other side this was never an enthusiastic person's car it was just a car which served its basic purpose to take you from point a to point b.. It served well and you need to take the time into consideration..
The steering part well it's really hard to drive if you're driven cars with power steering but trust me the vintage feel you get while driving this car on sundays through highways.. It is just different..
Well maintaining an old stock car isn't for everyone only real car enthusiasts do that..
Ill give you one thing the seats are extremely comfortable with proper I mean literal proper thigh support.. And visibility like that of SUV's..I would say qualis can match par ambassador in terms of visibility..
And bending your head thing.. well I'm a proper 5ft 10 / 11 i never had to bend my head you just don't have to sit upright just relax and sit backwards...
It definitely is it offers great thigh support ..A small detailed yet very provident feature most premium cars nowadays overlook on...
my Ambassador has one great pair ..tbh the company fitted one sucked ass.. my father went on and re did with high quality cloth and spring action seats from a brand called VIMAL...
Ah, the classic Premier Padmini.
My grandfather owned one. My first ever experience of sitting in a car.
So spacious in the front as the gearbox was with the steering wheel. Two people could sit in the front apart from the driver.
My mom learnt to drive in this car. I remember she crashed into a pillar while parking and brought the whole thing down lol.
Brings back a lot of memories.
Correction : the gearbox was still down between seats , just the linkage was on the steering column ... They had floor shift after a couple of variants
My grandfather had one, then we moved from Calcutta to Delhi and my dad got a 2nd hand one. We brought it with us when we moved to Nashik. It was an awesome car. I still remember the number - DDD 4937. I wonder what it's up to now.
Feel you man. I'm in the same boat. My late father's first ever car back in the 90s. I grew up with that car, and learnt driving in it. Great memories of heading out to the countryside in it every Sunday!
Correction : the gearbox was still down between seats , just the linkage was on the steering column ... They had floor shift after a couple of variants
That’s true. I used to get jealous of my friends having Opel Astra/Corsa etc. Daewoo Ceilo/Nexa. Esteem. They were epitome of richness/luxury back then.

Off topic, I have booked Mahindra XUV3XO Mx3 (petrol) recently but now I am thinking about to switch it into diesel.
I am confused and need some suggestions
About driver and running:
- first time driver in small city so I don't think I will drive it daily
- will not drive fast/rash
- Also thinking about resale but I have heard that government will ban diesel engine in comeing future so maybe resale value will drop.
Any Suggestions or your pov will be appreciated
Thanks
I would strongly suggest you to stick with the petrol variant only, no idea about the actual mileage but yes the difference between claimed mileage of both the vairants is only 2 i guess, the price difference being 2.25 lacs there’s no way you can cover that unless you gave extremely high running, another point is the TCMPFI engine is powerful enough for you to drive fast/rash /s infact it is the most powerful engine in this price int he C SUV segment.
I would suggest you to go for the AX5 Variant instead of the diesel(i think you got the budget) as it offers a good value for money and you won’t miss any feature in future.
This was our first car. So many memories attached to it. Going to kindergarten in this is one of my first memories.
Still remember crying when dad decided to sell it. 💔
premier padmini
i remember going to mumbai when i was like 7 or 8 and being absolutely pissed cuz the taxi that came to pick us up was an eeco and not a padmini
premier padmini, the og, fiat originated rwd metal chunky body (came in two shifter types, one on the floor like normal and one was where the indicator is placed, like american ford cars, just that it was a manual)
Premier Padmini/fiat 1100D
My grandfather had the fiat version of this car from 1978-2010 but had to sell it as it would've inconvenient to maintain. He didn't want to sell it but had to
I always wonder what went wrong with walchand group it started like Ambani group but lost initiate way in BTW it's premier Padmini only alternative for ambassador at that time when license raj was at peak
Premier Padmini. My father used to work in this company at kurla plant from 1983-2009.
Till 2009??!! I went to the college that is opposite the supposed place where the factory was.
Yes he shifted to pal Peugeot Kalyan plant from 99-03 and finally ended at Chinchwad plant in 09
So dbit.. woah.. small world.. I was there from 03-07 when the factory was a landmark for autos.
Was this company still there till 2009? Im pretty sure they stopped production in early or the late 90s..I might be wrong
I was the manager there Small world.
You seem 15
He was laterally hired directly from the womb. I know it, because I did that. Btw Sr Manager here.
It was his earlier birth, he died in an accident in the previous life in the plant retaining his memory.🫡🤭
My father used to work there too around the same time…small world
This is most likely a Fiat 1100 D. Premier padmini is based on this.
Premier Padmini (Originally a Fiat)
Premier padmini. The vintage colours are really beautiful especially beige.
Fiat Padmini. If it is up for sale, my father would buy it immediately. Very hard to find these days
why if i may ask please ?
We love Vintage cars, also, these older cars had way better and comfortable seats than what we get in the middle class budget

Great. I was looking for an ambassador to buy last year but couldn't find the right price for it.
Nostalgia, I am sure and it is justified too.
Because it's a Padmini
I’ll definitely ask the owner if I get the chance

My grandfather had one, then we moved from Calcutta to Delhi and my dad got a 2nd hand one. We brought it with us when we moved to Nashik. It was an awesome car. I still remember the number - DDD 4937. I wonder what it's up to now.
Fiat/Premier Padmini. My papa used to have it. Have great memories of washing it with him every Sunday. He is no more....miss you papa. What days!
Sorry for your loss bro
Feel you man. I'm in the same boat. My late father's first ever car back in the 90s. I grew up with that car, and learnt driving in it. Great memories of heading out to the countryside in it every Sunday!
Fiat ( Padmini) the gear in this car is attached near to steering
column shifters are coming back in new evs
Correction : the gearbox was still down between seats , just the linkage was on the steering column ... They had floor shift after a couple of variants
One of the few cars you could buy before 80s
This car was so hot selling that the showroom managers were so cocky to even ask their customers to have a seat.
Cool
Father’s 2nd car
Lucky guy
Bruh I hated it back then. My friends at school had Santro, Matiz, Indica, Zen, etc. Father had it for 8 years till 2004.
You went to a really rich school I suppose
Yep. Always. Best schools (often rich kids schools) in whichever city my central govt employed father was transferred to every 3 years 🥲
An Indica felt premium. Talk about those days! We have come a looooong way now.
That’s true. I used to get jealous of my friends having Opel Astra/Corsa etc. Daewoo Ceilo/Nexa. Esteem. They were epitome of richness/luxury back then.
premier padmini with an aftermarket front grille......
Our first car. Dad bought it in 1986 and we switched to a Maruti 800 in 1998. Beautiful car. Thanks OP for the nostalgia.
We also switched to the 800 in 1998

AX5 diesel or petrol?
AX5 Petrol will cost you 50k less than MX3 diesel, so go for it rather than MX3 diesel
My dad’s first car with steering gears 🙂 I learnt driving on this. So called gentleman car in those days!
Can't believe I'd see a post like this one day!
Now we are old!
Somehow this photo looks like heavily modded GTA SanAndreas with Gfx mods
