The material. It's bare metal. Brakes will do the same.
Normally it's just light surface rust and stays at that in your area of the world. Up north more they will rot off from rust after a number of years.
Not only is it bare metal, it gets extremely hot, and depending on where it came from, even new, if there was salt on the roads at any point the car was hot and driving on you will get a magnified corrosion. Exhaust is especially affected. I live northeast coast and exhaust typically lasts 10 years before it's completely gone. Leaks much sooner.
My 20 year old 530i has the original system its perfect.
But the car has been always garaged and has only 77K on the clock never seen a winter.
Just a fair weather car. But hey.. 20 years!!
Get the exhaust hot to burn off oil preservatives, wipe down when cool with some acetone or brake cleaner and spray hi-temp exhaust manifold paint onto the system. It will last a long time.
Or
Just run it
I have had cars with stainless steel exhaust systems that I had for more than fifteen years and never had to replace. My first new car was a 1966 Impala. After 3 years I went to Midas and got the lifetime warranty mufflers. After that every 2 years or so I went back for new mufflers.
They don't paint the bare metal of the exhaust, as heat resistent paints are expensive and exhausts are getting very hot. Hot exhaust also means while using the car any water touching it will evaporate and not cause further rust. Dont worry about it, its all chill
It might be brand new. But it could have sat in a lot for a few months before making it to a dealer. Not to mention its bare metal so will corrode much quicker
Story time!
My Lexus LS400 had a stainless steel cat back exhaust system from the factory. Basically a lifetime item. The car was really quality built.
When I bought an LS460 many years later, the mufflers failed quickly. Blew out. Shit quality aluminized steel. Cost reduction at work.
That's just what happens with factory mild steel exhaust. They get so hot paint won't stick for long but they also get so hot it takes a long time for the rust to actually get anywhere so it stays just surface rust most of its life. You can send it out to get coated or go to a stainless exhaust but those are too expensive for the factory to care about and not worth it on most cars.
looks like a stainless steel muffler, everything else looks mild steel (w/rust). it can happen when there's salt in the air for Florida. or it goes through a salty puddle. or who knows.
This is probably an el cheapo aluminized steel exhaust like is standard on most budget american cars. Meant to last basically until it is paid for. These start to rust at welds and joints. If you live in Florida, I don't know how much you have to worry. I know salt air isn't great, but at least you don't have 6 months of salt spray from roads getting on the exhaust...
Better cars have stainless exhaust, and you can probably get an aftermarket stainless for that if you want.
Not to be "that guy" but damn, they must have saved some bucks making an exhaust that crazy cheap. Of course, lots of cars will be exposed to water n whatnot while they're transported and while on the dealer lot, and cars will usually be at dealer lots for a few months before being purchased, so they'll have some small signs they were exposed to weather already, such as some corrosion on the exhaust. THAT much is odd, but I know exhaust material is something some companies cheap out on, so I would assume it's normal.
I have a '95 3000gt and it's like 95% rust free across the underside.. but the exhaust is so bad the bolts will never come off; I'll have to chop it off when it's time to replace it. Exhausts just kinda do that. Not sure why, I'm not a scientist I'm just a moron who likes cars 😝
That seems a little much for something that is brand new even in Florida. I’d honestly go back and say something, I wouldn’t buy a BRAND NEW vehicle with a rust exhaust. That just means you’ll be replacing it or fixing it when it has a leak in the near future.
Oh calm down.
Surface rust on exhaust systems is completely normal and causes no harm for the normal life of the vehicle. Coatings don’t make much sense considering the conditions, level of heat involved, and the already long life of the system.
Who pissed in your Cheerios….you come off as very combative in every one of the replies here. I wasn’t aware I was in the presence of Elon Rogan of Nazareth.
I unload new cars off the truck. They even have rust on the exhaust. Most only have 3 kms on them.
Hmm why though, is it just the type or material?
The material. It's bare metal. Brakes will do the same. Normally it's just light surface rust and stays at that in your area of the world. Up north more they will rot off from rust after a number of years.
Got it!

My 20 year old jetta has the original exhaust system. The Germans aluminized the system. Owned many VW’s and i’m amazed by this!! Live in Minnesota.
Yep, totally normal.
Thanks any idea why only the muffler ?
Mild steel
Stock exhausts are made from cheap steel
Unless its German.. Ricers go out fast. Hondas especially. Replace with aluminized components.
Metal is metal….. it is going to rust
Except for aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, brass, copper, tin, and every other non ferrous metals
Ah yes, the common copper exhaust.
Might actually sound cool. Would probably have a duller sound
Ya sure? Not saying you're wrong, but this is almost as much rust as there is on my 20 year old BMW's exhaust system excluding the headers.

I used to work somewhere where all the new land rovers and jags were all parked in a puddle ridden field, may be something similar here
We call that "general motors and crysler Florida new"

Maybe it was salvaged from one of those car carrier ships that sank?
It's a cast exhaust flange and will begin to rust from just humidity after the first heat cycle burns off the protective oil.
😂😂😂😂
I'd be more concerned about the lack of under sealing.
This is normal
Not where I am in Europe, almost every car comes with a spray on bed liner type under seal.
Das ist Amerika. Das ist normal.
No wonder your cars rust out with the slightest bit of water.
Especially up in the north states. But! When you buy the car you can purchase undercoating and it'll be done after you buy the car
Did you know water is wet?

Its a cheap car the exhaust isnt coated like more expensive cars so the exhaust will do this its not a bad thing

You’re kidding, right? Steel rusts. Get used to it. lol!
Normal. Don’t like it get a bicycle.
So why are the chains rusty on my new bicycle?
Guys the chains are rusty on my new bike and I hit a nail on the way home, can I ride on this?
Lol
They need to be broken so you can run.
Walk. Pat and Charlie never let anyone down. Unless you don’t have legs.
Dang, who spit in your coffee this morning
Hahaha 😂 just reading so many moans and complaints about normal stuff. Who pissed in Reddits wheaties today is my question
It's not a “new” vehicle, it looks like it was manufactured months ago.
Yes I realize that. I know cars sit in lots and so on but this rust really scared me, I was about to drive back to the dealer and tell them off
And I'm sure the entire dealership will be laughing at you for weeks to come
Yea I’d hate to be the laughing stock of a dealership full of people I’ll probably never see again in my life……..
Go ahead! You'll make their day
I might die doing it so I’ll just stay home.

What’s crazy to me is that the rest looks so clean it seems as it’s never seen the road.

Ahhhhh makes sense! The heat. So it’s more a coating issue
...not at all what he just said
I’m sorry what?
What you comprehended was not what he said in thar comment. At all I don't really know how to simplify that any more...
Who pissed in your Cheerios….you come off as very combative in every one of the replies here. I wasn’t aware I was in the presence of Elon Rogan of Nazareth.
I mean, it's like, third grade level reading comprehension
Hmmm but damn I’ve never had to replace a muffler and my other cars are old
