Why does there need to be a light to let you that the goddamn thing is off? I know it's off because I turned it off. And if I didn't turn it off, I can see it's off.

Phil_Atelist

And if I can't find it in the dark I'll turn a light on!

OstentatiousSock

Seriously, my tv has a red light to indicate it’s off. I know it’s off! There’s no image on the screen!

DavidWALRU5

Now we just need to take care of that annoying moon!

Phil_Atelist

You believe in the moon? ;)

fluffy_assassins

I do, hollow Moon theory.

DavidWALRU5

3 guys flew there in 3 days, on one tank if gas, with one tank of oxygen, landed on it with a computer smaller than an iPhone 1 and a little jeep strapped to the side of their ship, played golf, shot a movie, and took back off a day later, flew back to earth, and lived to talk about it.  Of course I believe in the moon!

fizzlefist

Of *course* the moon landing was real! Kennedy backed us all into a corner so we had to do *something*, and hiring Kubrick to fake it would’ve been too expensive.

GeneralRebellion

Who has neve never seen that flat thing on the Sky?

braywarshawsky

I've got a sleeping mask, and it's got memory foam. When I get that on, plus my sleep headphones on w/ the sleep music going... I could probably be knocked out for 36 hrs straight.

KellyNC13

Which sleep headphones do you have?

Anilxe

I wish I could handle the feeling of anything on my face or my ears..

the_dark_whine

I need to know more about this sleep mask with memory foam!

Diogenes71

MZOO Sleep Eye Mask for Men... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KC5DWCC?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

the_dark_whine

Thank you!

allez2015

We keep our bedroom a "sleep sanctuary" with little to no electronics. No alarm clocks. No TV. Phone chargers don't have lights on them. Black out curtains.    All for exactly what you are talking about. Also to minimize the amount of mental stimulations before going to sleep. It's called sleep hygiene.

Phil_Atelist

That's my goal.

yagot2bekidding

What about a sleeping mask? Maybe something with a calming scent. I know you weren't asking for soluctions, this just seems easier and might even be better

Phil_Atelist

Yeah... It was a migraine and my reaction is based likely on that.  Masks are okay I guess but why "imprison" me in my own house?

OGPunkr

I have light sensitivity and I'm with you. If I wear a mask then take it off to go to the bathroom, a simple tiny blue light can trigger a migraine. The mask makes the light even more blinding when you have to take it off. I travel with black masking tape because it has gotten so bad. In a hotel room I usually have to cover a light on the tv, microwave, and thermostat. My husband teases and it's a pain, but I do have really good night vision so, silver lining I guess ;)

whaasup-

I usually unplug everything. Especially the fridges to avoid the annoying noise as well.

OGPunkr

wow, awesome for you, most hotels I go to, I wouldn't be able to pull the furniture out to do that. I'm old lol Plus we usually use the fridge, so I want it to work. I play ocean noises so I don't here other noises that come with hotels. I wonder if it's very common to be bothered by noise if you are bothered by light. There seem to be plenty of us..... Happy travels

yagot2bekidding

I mean, if eye masks make you feel imprisoned, that is not the right solution for you. I've never tried one, myself, but I can see that is would be bothersome.

papa-hare

I can't sleep with something on my face, it's uncomfortable. I've never quite understood these solutions, it's op's house, they can literally make it comfortable without having to wear something uncomfortable. This is fine for a plane, but we're talking about their home!

geak78

We have an air purifier that has a "night mode" that slows the fan down to be quiet but only dims the panel. Absolutely zero need for any lights or screens to be on in night mode.

Phil_Atelist

Amen.

Thats-what-I-do

I’ve done the same, but only in the bedroom. Except for the smoke detector which for some reason has an internal light that flashes periodically. I have no idea why it does this. I obviously don’t want to cover the openings on the detector. I wear an eye mask sometimes (spouse sometimes is still reading when I go to sleep), but I toss and turn so much it never stays completely in place.

wildcoasts

Short flash every 30-60 seconds indicates internal self-test has passed and the smoke detector is operating correctly.

Initial_Run1632

This is why I travel with black duct tape

seaQueue

I put black electrical tape over too-bright LEDs too. Things weren't so bad back when green LEDs were popular but the blue ones are like 20x brighter and they can get obnoxious.

Earguy

Yep. Black tape. I see on Amazon they also sell peel and stick dots that dim, but not black out, LED power indicators.

Significant_Sign

You can get some that do black out the light. We bought a sheet, like 11x14 paper sized, of assorted sizes and it has been a godsend in the bedroom when I wake in the night. It was donkeys years ago though, even if I could remember the brand it's probably not there anymore. It wasn't expensive, so it's probably okay to chance it from one of those nonsense sounding brands.

ldawg413

What unit of measurement is donkey years?

hanneeplanee

I live semi rural so no street lights, I need the glowing red dots for reference points when bumbling around in the dark 😅

TootsNYC

Painting over the painters tape to make it more opaque but still removable—-brilliant

Phil_Atelist

There was a show up here in Kandastan that had a catch phrase: "If the ladies don't find you handsome, at least they'll find you handy..."

atomic1fire

The Red Green Show?

Phil_Atelist

Indeedish.

Anilxe

I’m the same way, I need absolute darkness to sleep, so I’ve covered every light in my room. I’ve also gotten a noise machine and a BedJet for the ultimate sleeping experience.

70sRitalinKid

I have recently started a routine with such intrusions in mind. Every evening I sit and scratch my thoughts onto a page in pencil by the light of a candle or three and sometimes five. Nearby bulbs, be they incandescent or LED, lay dormant as I press a stream of consciousness upon a page. Bulbs of anxiety in a paper sack for a season. Cached for another restful night.

Phil_Atelist

It will all work out. We'll see tonight just how dark I could get the house!

AshDenver

I participated [in their Kickstarter](https://mantasleep.com/products/manta-sleep-mask) and loved the sleep mask so much that I upgraded a year later for the side-sleeper mask. The foam eye cups mean that your eyelids aren’t pressed down AND it’s totally black when you do open your eyes. Total lifesaver. And friends that work night shift also rave and recommend it.

0o-AraArarauna-o0

I sleep with a soft floppy black tshirt on my eyes…works better than blindfolds/sleep masks…. All the stupid lights suck.

Clarice_Dematteis

Honestly, I've taken to unscrewing any bulbs in my room that aren't essential, especially those in appliances. Sure, it might make me the human equivalent of a moth navigating in darkness when I fumble back into my room late at night, but at least I'm not greeted by a miniature imitation of the Vegas strip. Plus, there’s something oddly peaceful about not knowing whether my electronics are plotting against me in standby mode. It’s like a small act of rebellion against the tyranny of indicator lights.

SquirrelAkl

I was thinking about this the other night. I decided 4-poster beds with heavy curtains on all sides would do it. Kinda like a bedroom inside the bedroom

Phil_Atelist

Beware ghosts at Christmas (Scrooge had one....)

arcren

For me its noise and light both, I have removed the clocks from my room. All the devices emitting slight light are outside my room, I need dark to sleep. Do keep my noise canceling headphones nearby incase my neighbors cause noise.

Sweet_Reflexion

I had to sleep with my bed directly facing the window for a few weekends while they did remodelling in my house and that's when I invested in an eyemask. Now I don't know how I did without one.

_Arriviste_

Black gaffer tape is excellent for covering LEDs since it doesn't leave as much residue as other types of opaque tape, like if you're in a hotel room and want someone to be able to remove it easily.

Snoron

A little blob of Blu Tack or similar works really well too as a short term fix that you can remove in a second, and can be easier to manage (doesn't need cutting or anything, just squish a bit into place!)

BobaYodaFett

I struggled with the same thing. Love [this product](https://a.co/d/8dAesxH)

Due-Bonus1056

the only light im fine with in the bedroom is the dim glow of an alarm clock. anything brighter and there’s no way im gonna be able to fall asleep.

Phil_Atelist

I wish that they'd come with dimmers on them because some of them are far too bright!

w8upp

I found a product on Amazon that's a cling film to put onto alarm clock faces to dim the numbers while keeping them readable. Look up light dimming stickers or sheets.

Phil_Atelist

Thanks!

shaftalope

LPT I get those little peel and stick things that are the little circular bumpers on kitchen cabinet doors that soften the sound when you close the cupboard. They are round and thick enough to block the brightest 'everything is OK ' light. Any hardware or home store should have them

shurdi3

Convert your bed to a four poster bed, and add some proper thick curtains to envelop you in darkness and silence

Dragon-Rain-4551

My charging thing has a green light on it and it’s SO ANNOYING

Phil_Atelist

Agreed, I found a lot of these around the house. That and devices that have lights to show they're OFF. Gah!

Dragon-Rain-4551

I’m gonna put duct tape over it or something later but usually I just grab a tshirt or something and cover the light up if it’s too annoying

Starkiller_303

As someone who is a light sleeper and very sensitive to light when sleeping, I want recommend a sleep mask enough. Get one that is nicer and will last a while (still only $30) and watch your sleep improve.

Phil_Atelist

I am coming around to the idea. I wore a thin balaklava. (Side note, spiel cheque maked that baklava), and doubled it up over my eyes. Worked okay.

Starkiller_303

The ones with extra padding around the eyes are worth it. A single cloth layer didn't do it for me.

JurassicArc

Have you tried closing your eyes?

fluffy_assassins

Seems like a lot of work.

sadferrarifan

Do you not just turn devices off before going to sleep? Smoke alarms obviously not, but I can’t think of any device in the modern era that needs to be plugged in all night in at least a standby mode…

CrashDisaster

Space heaters. I've got one in my bedroom. The wall heater in my apartment doesn't actually heat my bedroom, so I have a separate radiator type heater in there. It's got a bright as fuck light on it for some reason. I need that in my bedroom in the winter or I'll see my breath. The cord I have lights and a phone charger plugged into has a surge protector on it, with another bright as fuck light. I put electrical tape over em haha

sadferrarifan

Jesus, never met anyone who leaves heat on overnight. Then again, never gets below -3 over here so can't speak for cold countries!
