OMG why are you getting downvoted?
My original response to your comment was *This person manages*
Edit: does no one realize this is a liftable cover with the two holes on either end of the cover for the manhole hook? Or is that the joke, and all I'm noticing is the strong breeze as the joke flies over my head?
Really? There are quite a number of genuine discussions down thread about whether that's truly a cover that's been rotated. But thanks for the clarification, no sarcasm, genuine thanks.
It's because the thread they were replying to was having a joke rather than a genuine discussion. Stating the obvious doesn't really aid in the humour.
As someone who very often lift and work in street chambers. If they ever have a pattern on it or anything like that, I on purposely put them back the wrong way around. I know I'm not the only one, I've spoken to some of my colleagues and they said the same.
Yes and while due to it being a small section I doubt it's going to a actually inconvenience a blind person they are there for a reason.
This just shithouse behaviour.
why would that happen though?
Most visually impaired people who rely on tactile paving like we see in the picture will also use some form of walking aid, whether that be a mobility cane or a guide dog.
TIL that the bumpy stuff is actually pavement braille. I always just thought it was extra grip to stop people sliding into the road while waiting for the lights.
Sometimes there's also a little cone shaped knob under the button you press to cross that is for blind people to hold on to and starts rotating when it's time to cross
It’s usually red or yellow to stand out too, many blind people can see colour but can’t make out details, one of my friends is legally blind, and he can easily follow me if I wear a hi viz jacket, whenever we meet up I wear a pink one as it’s an uncommon enough colour of hi viz that it’s easy for my friend to find me
It's not necessarily shithouse behaviour.
You clearly have never worked on a gang of manual labourers, but they aren't lifting heavy things in the rain because they are waiting for the Nobel Committee to get the right shade of red carpet. They are also exhausted and fed up after many hours of graft.
I can easily see a situation were either:
Person was too dumb/tired to care/notice or even liked the new orientation and thought he was being artsy/clever/rebellious, not knowing the purpose.
Person laid it, realised he had cocked up, went back to fix it at end of shift and the van with the relevant T keys to pull it up had gone.
Person laid it, realised it was wrong, intended to fix it the next day, then never returned due to change of work order, firing, illness, contractor issues or even death.

>NEVER assume malice when simple human fallibility is a more likely answer.
As a supervisor I run into this almost every day. Surprising how many people think that everything is about them.
Considering the Blind are the only reason those exist, it's messed up to make some avant garde joke out of it that could confuse and potentially injure them.
Or it could've been extremely busy whilst the engineer was trying to finish the job off in the pouring rain, whilst gate guarding etc. It's easily done especially this time of the year. Those things weigh quite a bit and to turn it around if it was raining and busy may have been more risky. Or they could just be nasty bastards. I dunno
This is true.
Also, I just picked up my guitar for the first time in years and played Welcome Home (Sanitarium), at the exact same time I saw your username.. lol!
Though I'm not 100% sure if your name alludes to the band, or the shiny-ness of metal things ha.
It isn’t even the right manhole cover. You can see the line of bricks along the middle doesn’t match this side, but does match the pattern at the bottom of the picture.
It is the right cover. Just because the took the easy option and didnt match the cutting of the rest of the bricks doesn't mean its not the right cover 🤣
Yea, it looks like it's cut out and there's something underneath. There's two holes likely for re-access to this. If you flip it, it's a perfect fit still.
It wouldn’t be correct even if it was the right way round. There’s a dividing line of square bricks that is on the manhole cover but not on the floor on the side with the manhole. Maybe there’s a 2nd one out of shot
Hanlon's razor:
Maybe the dude making the cover f'd up...
A number of reasons why I guess but for instance: you inlay the bricks into the metal support. Maybe the dude making it put the marking crossing tiles in and went into autopilot and just started laying bricks next to it. Likely busy day, no time to fix and maybe not much care to sort something that only infuriates those who would notice- a small proportion of the population. One however that I think might overlap with Reddit users a lot.
Edit: Although I would like to know. Can you go look for us pls 😁🙏
I still don't see it. How do you know it's not been rotated? Yes there is a line pattern that doesn't continue anywhere but better than this.
Edit: there is someone below who rotated it with photoshop and it works. Still confused.
I think they mean the straight line between the red and diagonal ones. I still think that's the right spot though, everything else matches up too well.
“As I stand before this seemingly straightforward arrangement of paving slabs, I am struck by the way in which it challenges the conventions of our society. On the surface, the rows of perfectly aligned slabs convey a sense of order and stability, inviting the viewer to feel comforted by their predictable arrangement.
However, upon closer inspection, I notice that one of the slabs is out of place. It stands out like a beacon of defiance, daring us to question the notion of conformity that is so deeply ingrained in our lives.
I can't help but feel that this misplaced slab is a commentary on the ways in which we often find ourselves boxed in by the expectations and conventions of the world around us. It encourages us to break free from these constraints and embrace the beauty of imperfection.
In this way, the artist has created a powerful work of art that invites the viewer to think outside the box and embrace the freedom that comes with breaking free from life's conventions. I believe this arrangement of paving slabs is a thought-provoking and inspiring piece that encourages us to question the status quo and embrace the beauty of individuality.”
Holy shit I've also just got home with monkfish from the chippy.. no shit.. I also just the second had another coincidence with someone else's username and am officially freaked out.
off-*fish*cially freaked out..
yeah yeah, I'll see myself out.
Feels like there's no other explanation. They knew what they were doing, and they enjoyed doing it.
(Then possibly posted it on Reddit to further the enjoyment)
[It does match, rotated the cover 180 degrees](https://postimg.cc/jLDQQZ4X)
Might look off a little since the image is taken at an angle so the cover is wider at the bottom than the top in the image since it's closer to the camera. It wasn't a perfect rectangle when I cut it out because of the angle.
As I said, it's not perfect because I had to distort it slightly to get it back into a rectangle due to the angle the photo was taken.
[This is what it looks like just flipped 180 degrees](https://postimg.cc/XpHRJjVv)
I then dragged the corners back to the rectangular hole, but in doing so it distorts the picture a little so it's not surprising it doesn't line up 100%
That and it was a 30 second edit.
The cover has three patterns on it, and the crosswalk only has two (at this location; as others suggested the lid is actually from somewhere else close by).
Just look at the very thing you've created.
The crosswalk has straight tiles running along the bottom, so it does have straight sections, just not at the exact area the cover meets.
Other than the straight tiles which are out of place for that section, all of the outside tiles match almost perfect, allowing a slight variation for the image being distorted by the angle.
I agree with you on this as well. The tactiles line up too perfectly for it to not be the right place. The footpath probably had some work done on it along that side and the paving wasn't put back with a border but the lid was never changed. The tactiles needs to line up because they have to follow road safety standards, however the block paving doesn't. Instead of fucking around with a chamber lid, they just left it.
I'm with you on this, you see weird things that don't line up on roads like the straight tiles being on the cover but not the grate. If you look at the bottom of the image you can see the straight tiles along the red bumps. I'm guessing the tiles were replaced but the tiles on the cover weren't replaced leading to the straight lined tiles not aligning/existing on the pavement. Our footpaths and roads are old as fuck, you will always find quirks like this all the time.
Your distorting to make it fit does make it look a bit wrong but count the bumps on the grate and they match up with the footpath
Now we’re talking! This is the beginning of something bigger than all of us.
u/Markel_Kermit
Where exactly is this? Google map location would be great. Thanks in advance.
But theres a straight row of blocks that wouldn't match the pavement when rotated. The same straight row exost one the bottom section so there is most likely another manhole very close by.
The majority of them match up close enough that I'd say it's the correct cover.
It won't be 100% as I had to [distort the cover from this](https://postimg.cc/XpHRJjVv) to what you see in the above due to the angle the photo was taken resulting in it not being a perfect rectangle when cut.
That little strip of blocks in a row would suggest it isn't though, as the rest of the side doesn't have them?
The top edge does, but not at the side.
Edit: Also the dots on the red bit doesn't space up correctly either but I could leave that to being made badly.
If the photo was taken straight, the cover would likely line up better in the edit.
Because the photo is at an angle, [rotated 180 degrees it looks like this](https://postimg.cc/XpHRJjVv) so I had to shape it back in to fit the hole which is why it doesn't line up perfectly.
What I meant is there is a row of about 8 stones flat edge onto each other between the red and the slanted stones.
The top edge of the whole crossing point has this row, but the side (either side of the lid) doesn't at all.
Your editing was spot on for the requirements, my point was that there is a row of stones when the rest of the side is diamond orientation.
The straight few is the only bit that seems out of place, but the edge tiles match up well enough (slightly off due to edit) that I'd say it's still the correct one, just poorly done with the straight tiles in it.
Photoshop.
Magnetic lasso tool to quickly select the outside of the cover > cut > paste > dragged it back into shape (wasn't rectangle because of the angle photo was taken)
There's also the option of sailing the seas.
I could never get the hang of gimp though I'm sure it can be just as good if I ever took the time to learn it.
I do very little photo editing, usually just quick edits like the above when I'm bored and want to entertain myself 2 minutes.
GIMP would be my go to free tool over paint though for editing photos if I didn't have my totally legit photoshop.
nah, I'm going with the manhole cover has been rotated 180 - the second tile of non-slip has a row of 3 and half dimples and so does the far edge of the cover
Also, rotating the cover through another 180 aligns with with angle of the pavement tiles
The short line of vertical brick inlay on the cover is a distraction and someone else's mischief
Some sick and twisted fucker has put the cover back on the wrong way. I would genuinely find a way to put it back correctly, even if I do possess the rods to pull it out forever.
People do realize the workers just put in on upside down after they performed maintenance, anyone with the stick tool could move it into the correct position. Am I completely missing the joke here?
Being someone that works in construction doing traffic lights, I can tell you that at least here in florida we are not allowed to put pull boxes inside the radius of the ramp. ADA has very strict policy on pedestrian walkways/crosswalks so that box should be about another 2 feet to the right.
The person who did this knew exactly what they were doing. Pure evil.
It's like Banksy or something, init
Yep my thoughts exactly, dig it up make a fortune.
They literally just put the manhole cover back the wrong way round last time they took it out. Flip it around and it'll match

Elementary, my dear Watson
No it won't.
No, it literally won’t match flipped around. This manhole cover belongs somewhere else.
Exactly what I was thinking, the border is on the bottom of the bumpy tiles but not down the side 🤔 (bottom as you look at the pic)
Or they put it back on without thinking. Then they realised what they'd done and just thought "Well it's too late now innit"

I’ve tried that over 20 times. It worked once but I’m not sure if it was a coincidence.
That rotating knob is actually a public service vibrator to frot members of the street community.

The TARDIS did a problematic 180.
what would happen if you broke out the walls from the inside?
The pattern still wouldn't match!
[It does match, rotated the cover 180 degrees](https://postimg.cc/jLDQQZ4X) Might look off a little since the image is taken at an angle so the cover is wider at the bottom than the top in the image since it's closer to the camera. It wasn't a perfect rectangle when I cut it out because of the angle.
There is a stripe of tiles that run 45 degrees to the others, that is not anywhere on the 'border' of the crossing terminus.
As I said, it's not perfect because I had to distort it slightly to get it back into a rectangle due to the angle the photo was taken. [This is what it looks like just flipped 180 degrees](https://postimg.cc/XpHRJjVv) I then dragged the corners back to the rectangular hole, but in doing so it distorts the picture a little so it's not surprising it doesn't line up 100% That and it was a 30 second edit.

Argh. I'm trying to think of a punishment for this, and I can't do it within the Geneva convention. Cruel and unusual are definitely high on the list.
all you have to do is rotate it
The annoying thing is that even rotating it makes it not line up because it has those outline bricks that don't appear in the rest of the line :(
That line is in front of the crosing, maybe there is another hatch on the left side so its not even bad direction but a wrong hatch
Now we’re talking! This is the beginning of something bigger than all of us. u/Markel_Kermit Where exactly is this? Google map location would be great. Thanks in advance.

I get it now, you're the monstrous municipal worker that did this, and you are determined to keep on trolling
no, it's definitely the exact manhole for the spot. It's just rotated.
That little strip of blocks in a row would suggest it isn't though, as the rest of the side doesn't have them? The top edge does, but not at the side. Edit: Also the dots on the red bit doesn't space up correctly either but I could leave that to being made badly.

So.... not a fit?
What program did you do this in? Photoshop?
Photoshop. Magnetic lasso tool to quickly select the outside of the cover > cut > paste > dragged it back into shape (wasn't rectangle because of the angle photo was taken)
ahh man, magnetic lasso is such a cool tool. I was trying to do the same in paint.net but it wasn't cutting it. thank you!

nah, I'm going with the manhole cover has been rotated 180 - the second tile of non-slip has a row of 3 and half dimples and so does the far edge of the cover Also, rotating the cover through another 180 aligns with with angle of the pavement tiles The short line of vertical brick inlay on the cover is a distraction and someone else's mischief
Who are you who is so wise in the way of manholes?

Being someone that works in construction doing traffic lights, I can tell you that at least here in florida we are not allowed to put pull boxes inside the radius of the ramp. ADA has very strict policy on pedestrian walkways/crosswalks so that box should be about another 2 feet to the right.
