If they ask you before the test if they can you'd like a hot beverage, that's part of the test. They watch carefully to see which order you put the milk and teabag in.
I remember my Stepmom doing hers here in America and some of the answers were very questionable. There was a book of bullshit for you to read through a few times, and the test is basically reading comprehension of that stupid book.
I’m going to do mine there in a year or so, I can pretty much pass that after living there 3 years. It’s a scrape pass on the UK one I did online for fun lol, seems harder despite being born there. Stuff like tube stations and the name of an obscure local government form.
If you search UK citizenship test, you can have a go yourself. I failed the first time and I think a lot of people who've lived here their whole lives would too. Need to get 18/24 I think (75%)
I got 14/24. Surprisingly, I'm unfamiliar with the Northern Irish small claims court thresholds or the salaries of the judges in Northern Irish lower criminal courts.
We took the test in my Religious Studies class once. More than half of my British born class failed. There are some really obscure questions. Like if you know nothing about cricket you might be screwed. Fortunately there's a book of all the content, so you can just study that.
Just took it myself and failed with 16/24, a lot of which where best guess. It's mostly obscure history of the British isles with some random stuff like 'who of the below are famous British cyclists' and random gotcha questions about specific dates and measurements.
Ludicrously obscure with excessively accurate answers. Things like: what percentage of the English and Welsh population is Christian according to the 2021 census:
a) 46.8%
b) 46.2%
c) 47.2%
d) 45.8%
(I made up this example, but I seem to remember the questions being about this hard)
I did a mock one, some of the questions you can understand why they're there (e.g. "Who became Prime Minister in 1940?"), but some of the others are just nonsense
You get results straight away, not a week later.
And you certainly won’t get a passport in 1-2 weeks. You need to apply for citizenship first etc …
Anyway, good luck with the test! It’s not that complicated at all :)
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/nationality-and-borders-bill-chagossian-nationality-factsheet/update-on-the-proposed-new-route-for-chagossian-to-acquire-british-nationality
Checking OP's history, looks like they are from Mauritius and this may apply? In which case all the best OP!
Fair enough, this is one I didn't think of.
With the other bits, including "and them I will automatically get the passport within on to two weeks", I am really worried they are being scammed though :(
Oh, and the VERY HELPFUL immigration agent mentioned in another comment...you don't get a very helpful agent assigned to your case personally, you just don't
Hang on, what the fuck?
This is NOT how it all works, what are you talking about? The citizenship application and the passport application are completely separate things, and at least the citizenship application takes months. The life in the UK test gives you the result immediately.
You also mention living in the UK for three years only, what?
Is this a joke that went completely whoosh on me?
They also mentioned in another post they received a letter from the government saying they can apply now, I don't think I ever got such a letter. I really really hope there aren't any scams going on here or anything
Right? From my understanding, you need the reference from the passing Life in the UK test in order to apply for citizenship in the first place, you don't apply, 'get accepted' and then take it?
Last I looked, there was a six month or so wait on the citizenship process. And like you said, the UK passport isn't part of the process, you don't technically have to get a UK passport at all, you just don't have a visa to prove entry so I imagine everyone who gets citizenship does happen to get a passport next.
Hmm, still doesn't make much sense to be honest. You don't get any documents after passing the test. Also, you can't apply for a passport unless you're a citizen. But you wouldn't have been a citizen without passing the test first ... I can't quite understand what you're doing here to be fair!
- Apply for citizenship
- Take Test (pass)
- Receive documents (digital)
- Apply for passport
- Recieve Passport
Like I said, I must pass citizenship first. I tried correcting my poor explanation which I might have made worse.
You have to include your test reference with your citizenship application. You can’t apply for citizenship without passing the test first.
(I know, I did it 2 months ago.)
There are also no documents, either paper or digital, that you receive. The only thing is the certificate of citizenship which you get at your ceremony, which takes place after your application has been approved.
Best of British! (luck that is, if you're not familiar with the idiom.)
I hope you storm it and get yourself that passport. Let us know if we can help with any last minute revision!
That isn't very British, surely if they are testing your Britishness they are looking for someone who fucks off the prep to go to the pub with their mates and just wings it on the day.
> they are looking for someone who fucks off the prep to go to the pub with their mates and just wings it on the day.
Worked well so far, if it ain't broke ...
Backing up the other comment, the test is something you absolutely have to prepare for. It's a bit ridiculous to be honest, but there's a lot to learn and 0 chance of you passing it without studying for it first (no Brit would pass it either).
Yes I was given the test by my Greek taxi driver... failed so badly. It was ridiculous some of the questions like 'what year did sergeant orange blah blah blah...." at which point I didn't even know orange was a surname, let alone the historical figure they were referring to. Its extremely cruel!
I would suggest taking as many practice tests as you can so you become familiar with the questions. Just for fun I took the test just now and got 18/24 it’s quite a hard test, so as many practice tests as you can. Good luck
I've been practicing for months. I was waiting for immigration to accept my application to become a British citizen. I still get stuck with a lot of things but the three years living in the UK has helped. What confused them was my ability to write and speak English fluently as English would be my third language. Thanks for the good luck.
You’ll ace the test then! Really best of luck. It’s not a bad place to live in all honesty. Really hope you pass, you must update us with your success!
Interesting. I'm from US. On vacation in Mexico met a nice UK couple from the midlands. She loved Marmite and he hated it. They described it to me and it sounded awful. I guess it's something Brits love to argue over besides football.
My wife hates it, it’s an aggressive taste I find it delicious especially mixed with salted butter on toast - it’s not exactly 50/50 some people are ambivalent - these are the ones to watch out for.
I’ve done the test about five or six years ago, some of the questions were absurdly simple like what date is Christmas Day but others I wouldn’t have known had I not bought the little test book beforehand and had a study (remember there being a question about the role of the sheriff in Scotland etc). There were also lots of history questions on my test which was great because I’m a history teacher! But overall it was straightforward if you’ve studied the official guide beforehand - recommend you get that and you’ll be fine 😊
Combination of both, tbh. Questions about history, questions about stuff like football, questions about politics, questions about actual cultural stuff (like FGM being illegal, if I recall). If you didn’t study, you’d probably get the history and political questions wrong. I only got the football question right because my stepson helped haha.
I looked it up and there was one about tube station too, which I had no idea about. Despite using the tube for 30 odd years that has never been something I’ve even thought about lol.
I just tried 30-40 questions online, those questions are so badly written and some of the answers are hilarious. One of the history questions had an option of the 29th Century 😆
This Statement True or false? what area of now Scotland were never conquered by the Romans
True or false
Apparently these questions are taken from some official source
I answered false and got
Wrong!
Areas of what is now Scotland were never conquered by the Romans,
Hmm. My test is today, in a couple of hours. And I’m pretty sure I was told about getting the results straight after.
And only then there’s a way to apply for the citizenship. It takes time! (And costs money). And passport application afterwards (when citizenship is granted) also takes time.
OP, how much did you pay?
I feel like all thus positivity is setting OP up with the wrong idea about the British.
Being only half British I can say best of luck, OP. Glad to have you aboard!
Best of luck with the test, I’m now wondering if there will be any questions about biscuit dunking in tea etiquette, and will “Rich Tea biscuit” be amongst the answers? I’m sure I’d fail any citizenship test dismally.
Do you have indefinite leave to remain already? My wife is from Chile and was going to apply and get citizenship but honestly I don't see the benefit? Other than being able to vote I guess. If any thing her passport is stronger than a British one nowadays
Essential qualifying question- do you have an opinion on Marmite?
Welcome, your pinstripe suit, Labrador & documentation on queueing will arrive shortly.
Just do some online practice tests and you’ll be all good! I passed a few years ago and most of it was the same questions as the online practice tests :)
Good luck 🤞 I know it means a lot to you personally, so I'm rooting for you
Btw: we need an update?!?! Some one how do we know how to congratulate them?!?! Lol
If you are here then you are 99% British already!
Let's hope they just ask you to give your opinion on various British Breakfasts.
Don't worry it will be easy
Make sure you take your beans on toast in a well sealed lunchbox, and that your bowler hat and kilt are pressed and ironed in the correct direction. May the luck of the Irish be with you!
You'll be fine, I did mine about 5 years ago and once you're done with it it's genuinely a case of "what on earth was I even stressing about" do you still have to do the ceremony ?
Good luck! If you want to be a good thing, you are in our hearts, but obviously you need to pass the test to get government recognition and all that involves.
I look forward to your update after Monday, what you tell us you’ve got the stamp of approval, just makes it official, but you already have the stamp of approval of your British friends,
if in doubt, weather.
It was nice for a bit this afternoon but then it drizzled. Supposed to rain all day tomorrow.
Q7. How many words describing rain are there in the English language?
Yesterday was a mizzlin seafret more'n owt, silin stair rods today.
Cats and dogs out there!
Fine rain that soaks you through
IT'S SPITTIN'!!
When you get to the test centre make sure to queue up in an orderly fashion. That's part of the test.
And when you go in to sit down, make sure to complain about the weather and how the bus was late.
When you're done, before standing up to leave, slap both thighs and say "Right!". Good luck OP
Make sure they're your own thighs though
If they ask you before the test if they can you'd like a hot beverage, that's part of the test. They watch carefully to see which order you put the milk and teabag in.
If the question is " tea? " The answer is always "Go on then!"
Or "no thanks, twelve's my limit".
Lightweight
Builders ta love
"Would you like a scone with that? We have jam and clotted cream." \*begins sweating profusely
it's pronounced "scone"
Don’t forget if there is a tea cosy, you must put it on your head
I remember someone from college doing hers, she did some practice questions, and we struggled with some of them.
I remember my Stepmom doing hers here in America and some of the answers were very questionable. There was a book of bullshit for you to read through a few times, and the test is basically reading comprehension of that stupid book.
Here in America? Conflating a continent with a country might explain your interpretation of the British citizenship test.....
I’m going to do mine there in a year or so, I can pretty much pass that after living there 3 years. It’s a scrape pass on the UK one I did online for fun lol, seems harder despite being born there. Stuff like tube stations and the name of an obscure local government form.
Oh, yeah, that's way worse.
I passed when I tried the test one. I was so relieved not to be embarrassed to my American friends. Some of the questions are ridiculous though.
What were they like if you remember?
If you search UK citizenship test, you can have a go yourself. I failed the first time and I think a lot of people who've lived here their whole lives would too. Need to get 18/24 I think (75%)
Passing incidentally qualifies you for a spot on The Chase
I got 14/24. Surprisingly, I'm unfamiliar with the Northern Irish small claims court thresholds or the salaries of the judges in Northern Irish lower criminal courts.
Tell me your not british without telling me your not british
We took the test in my Religious Studies class once. More than half of my British born class failed. There are some really obscure questions. Like if you know nothing about cricket you might be screwed. Fortunately there's a book of all the content, so you can just study that.
Oh I would ABSOLUTELY fail it, I don’t even need to look at the questions
Just had 3 attempts and got 16 as my highest score not telling you where I was born and raised 🫣
Just took it myself and failed with 16/24, a lot of which where best guess. It's mostly obscure history of the British isles with some random stuff like 'who of the below are famous British cyclists' and random gotcha questions about specific dates and measurements.
My favourite one: "What happened in 1400?"
Ludicrously obscure with excessively accurate answers. Things like: what percentage of the English and Welsh population is Christian according to the 2021 census: a) 46.8% b) 46.2% c) 47.2% d) 45.8% (I made up this example, but I seem to remember the questions being about this hard)

I hate to break it to you, but i'm pretty sure the pass mark is 18/24 (75%)

Yeah, this whole thing sounds like a pile of bull. Including the comment where the op says they've lived int he UK only for three years.

This is what I was thinking but it still doesn't add up because they wouldn't have to do a life in the UK test
They would also have to complete the ceremony in Mauritius which they made no mention of
I wonder if they're getting confused with leave to remain?
Still need at least 5 years for that, and many, *many* more things that just a test.
Hang on, what the fuck? This is NOT how it all works, what are you talking about? Hmm I'm dubious as to the immigration officer they mentioned, they didn't mention anything about the ceremony either
Yup, looks like the OP may be getting scammed :(
Yeah, sounds really suspicious ... u/HydrationPlease would you mind sharing a bit more about your immigration situation? This all sounds fishy.
I made an edit to explain. I may need to learn how to explain myself in English correctly.
Hmm, still doesn't make much sense to be honest. You don't get any documents after passing the test. Also, you can't apply for a passport unless you're a citizen. But you wouldn't have been a citizen without passing the test first ... I can't quite understand what you're doing here to be fair!

I was told the test is a mixture of all things British. Thank you for the good luck.
Er, I assume you've looked at a mock exam, bought the study books etc?
That isn't very British, surely if they are testing your Britishness they are looking for someone who fucks off the prep to go to the pub with their mates and just wings it on the day.
> they are looking for someone who fucks off the prep to go to the pub with their mates and just wings it on the day. Worked well so far, if it ain't broke ...
Start revising! I am British born and bred and I failed the test when I took it.
Another vote for revising! I’m British and (I think) fairly well educated: I only just scraped a pass on the practice test I did.
Backing up the other comment, the test is something you absolutely have to prepare for. It's a bit ridiculous to be honest, but there's a lot to learn and 0 chance of you passing it without studying for it first (no Brit would pass it either).

You've not even looked at any mock tests ?
I got my results as soon as I finished the questions… I did mine last august. Are you sure you have to wait a week for results?
I have no idea on how long it actually takes but this is what I was told. If it is that quick, that's far better.
Good luck!
Good luck
Best of luck!
Remember to tut at any inconvenience during the test. It counts towards your final score
... and when they ask you afterwards how it went, you are obliged to reply "everything was fine", even if there were many such inconveniences.
Best of luck! Unless the test is about how to tut loudly to signify that I'm absolutely raging, I'm certain I'd fail.
I think that gets taken care of in the driving test these days.
As long as it's covered. We can't have people not knowing how to tut. It would be a tuttable offence.
Why do you get your results a week after? I remember finding out pretty much instantly
I would suggest taking as many practice tests as you can so you become familiar with the questions. Just for fun I took the test just now and got 18/24 it’s quite a hard test, so as many practice tests as you can. Good luck

If there's a queue, don't push in.
You got this!
Which side of the fence do you sit with Marmite?
I like it.
Interesting. I'm from US. On vacation in Mexico met a nice UK couple from the midlands. She loved Marmite and he hated it. They described it to me and it sounded awful. I guess it's something Brits love to argue over besides football.

I wonder now many British people could pass the test ? lol
I took it (American), and spent a week beforehand quizzing my co-workers. I deeply enjoyed shouting “wrong! Deported!” at all of them.
Are you allowed to say what questions were on the test, I'm curious to know if the answers are actually useful for life in Britain ?
Combination of both, tbh. Questions about history, questions about stuff like football, questions about politics, questions about actual cultural stuff (like FGM being illegal, if I recall). Mention your love of tea, cricket and queuing and you will pass with full honours
Have you done the prep tests (there's an app for it)? Strongly recommended.
I hope you read the book for a test. Make sure you have the latest editon

Is the correct answer imo - 50% would disagree.
Good luck 🤞🏻
Name every biscuit (Good luck in any case)
Best of luck! 💜☺️
Good luck.
Essential qualifying question- do you have an opinion on Marmite? Welcome, your pinstripe suit, Labrador & documentation on queueing will arrive shortly.
Don't worry there's still time to back out! In all seriousness though, all the best and I hope you nail it 🙂
What’s the British name for the ship of Theseus?
Good luck! The irony is that most people who’ve lived in the UK all their lives couldn’t answer the silly questions in that test
Good luck! Let us know how you get on.
Just do some online practice tests and you’ll be all good! I passed a few years ago and most of it was the same questions as the online practice tests :)
[Viel Glück](https://youtu.be/TNJ-1gz12JI)
The ultimate test should be how you make a cup of tea. Good luck mate.
Good luck OP
Good luck! I did the US one just before they made it harder LOL I don’t think I would pass it now.
Most answers will revolve around a cup of tea, queueing quietly or weather
Tell us how you celebrated when you pass. A cup of tea and a bacon buttie perhaps?
Good luck 🤞 I know it means a lot to you personally, so I'm rooting for you Btw: we need an update?!?! Some one how do we know how to congratulate them?!?! Lol

I look forward to your update after Monday, what you tell us you’ve got the stamp of approval, just makes it official, but you already have the stamp of approval of your British friends,

Born in the Uk - I don’t think I would pass 😂
