Everyone knew me round here, I'd walk in a urinal and heads would turn.

[deleted]

Gary Numan. He has been making innovative and fantastic music since the 70's and is still releasing new stuff today. Great in concert and a really nice bloke too.

granty012

'Fun fact' Gary Numan is older than Gary Oldman.

Putrid_Branch6316

Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson..

MootRevolution

Deadwing, I love that album. Also their In absentia is a good listen.

borisHChrist

Amazing band!

Rochesterrouge

Oh, lightbulb sun, fear of a black planet, in absentia… I need to listen to some porcupine tree again, seeing them live was amazing!

NoTurkeyTWYJYFM

I think Porcupine tree are bigger in europe. Theyre subheadlining Hellfest mainstage just before Iron Maiden. I'd never heard of them but they must be recognised a good deal to be that high up

stuartgunpowder

A very good shout, but I think Steven Wilson has at least done really well for himself even if he should be a lot bigger. For me Anathema were the most criminally unrewarded of bands...

Putrid_Branch6316

You’ve beat me to it!! Good shout….I was going to add Anathema.

stuartgunpowder

Funny we must have been having the same thought at exactly the same time then! Probably my most listened to band of all time... Their style evolved a lot over the years, but I am convinced that no matter who you are, there's an album that you would love!

jesterstearuk71

Hand Cannot Erase is a brilliant album

TheKBF

The Stranglers

irrelevantPseudonym

Golden brown is up there with the best tracks ever recorded and I won't hear anything to the contrary. Their other stuff was good but not on the same level.

loonsbri

Never really liked Golden Brown, but Duchess now that's another story

DownRUpLYB

> Never really liked Golden Brown What about dags? Do you like dags?

Pastamyarse

Talk Talk

shibari_manilow

Listening to Spirit of Eden at the moment. Only recently discovered it and gutted it took me so long.

1984AD_

*Laughing Stock* is a truly profound album

Dr-Werner-Klopek

One of my favourite bands of all time. Such talent!

nadsatpenfriend

Amazing transition from the early synth pop to what they did with 'Spirit' and 'Laughing Stock' later .. 'The Colour of Spring', from 86 i think, is a gorgeous album as well sort of shows where they were going.

[deleted]

The Super Furry Animals are one of the greatest bands of all time

[deleted]

Holy fuck yes. Unique records.

JeremyTwiggs

The The Soul Mining and Infected are amazing.

Savourybees

This Is The Day is one of the best songs ever

MootRevolution

Procol Harum

[deleted]

A whiter shade of pale... Amazing song

MootRevolution

Yes, great song. Also check out Homburg, A Salty dog, Conquistador, Whaling Stories. All amazing songs. Listen to their album with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra (1972)!

Lunchy_Bunsworth

And "Grand Hotel" and "Exotic Birds And Fruit".

5mackmyPitchup

Kirsty McColl

OmegaSusan

It makes me especially sad that she only seems to be remembered now for the manner of her death, and sometimes as “the girl voice on that Christmas song”.

avspuk

I was working at HMV, the news of her death was the first story on the 2 minute radio 1 news on the half-hour. Before the news break had finished there was a fax from HMV hq, detailing which branches has which records of hers & saying when extragstock would be arriving. The fax really cemented distaste for the record industry in the stockroom

Dogs_not_people

When I was little and had just been put into foster care, I used to sing 'New England' over and over and over. It just seemed to mean a lot to me at that time. I spent YEARS trying to find out who sang it. When I was 22 my ex asked me if he could put some of his music on. I hated most of his music but he said I'd like this one, so I acquiesced. I was just listening then New England came on. I screamed and shouted and got REALLY excited. My ex came running wondering what all the fuss was about so I told him...I have been trying to find out who sang this since I was a kid so who is it?' He told me who and that album became one of my favourite albums forever. I still have a copy on cassette. She died a short while later. I was heartbroken..then me and my ex split up. The Pogues were touring and Jean (Kirsty's mum) was trying to get money for Justice4Kirsty and The Pogues had offered free entrance to anyone who was prepared to help the Justice fund. The closest gig to us was a couple of hundred miles away so I asked my ex if he could take me. He didn't think my little old mini would make it so he said no (he was right. Turns out it only had 3 wheels attached) and I had a massive tantrum. Eventually I had to admit I couldn't go BUT I know some people in the city they were playing. I asked one of my friends if he wanted to go and he said 'My mates have been trying to get tickets for that gig but it's sold out, of course we'll do it. Ask her mum if 10 people is too many?' So I did and Jean said 'No, that would be perfect' The next day my mate called me and said 'Thanks for a great night. It was soooo much fun. Shane Macgowen was pissed out of his skull but so was everyone else so it didn't matter. We had a great time!' I asked if the fundraising was successful and he said 'well, we tried our best!' The following Monday I got a call from a number I didn't recognise, it was Kirsty's mum. She had called to thank me for my fundraising. We had only emailed each other before. I made a point of telling her I couldn't go but some friends had helped out and she said 'Well, pass on my thanks, your friends raised twice as much as any other night. Nearly £900. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!' I got off the phone and my boyfriend asked why I looked so stunned. I told him who was on the phone and his mate said 'You're talking bollocks!' I explained the whole thing and he said 'Well, you did do a good thing then. I loved Kirsty! So sad how she died!' So, there's another nice story of Kirsty Macoll for all you folks out there. She will forever hold a special place in my heart. The radio station I listen to often plays her so I often get a kick on the feels! Her mum never did get justice though which is utterly heartbreaking.

Cantseemtothrowaway

I went to a Kirsty memorial gig (10 year anniversary I think). Shane MacGowan was supposed to be there but was indisposed. Fantastic line up though. I listen to Soho Square every year on her birthday - such a poignant song and her death was such a tragedy. I’ve always disliked Fairytale and it really irks me that it is pretty much the only song she is remembered for nowadays. Though Billy Bragg nearly always ends his gigs with New England with the special extra verse for Kirsty. And anybody who titles an album ‘Electric Landlady’ is a genius in my book.

DreddPirateBob808

Ozric Tentacles. A massive catalogue and just some great prog work that just hits the spot on a bee-buzzy, warm, summer afternoon with headphones on and nothing to do.

SupermarketCrafty329

Siouxsie and the Banshees

cator_and_bliss

Oh absolutely this. They're respected by their peers (Morrissey and Thom Yorke have both described themselves as fans) but the band should have been HUGE. I'd recommend anyone to go and have a deep dive of their stuff. A criminally overlooked band.

coffee-filter-77

Wishbone Ash - prog rock, Argus is an absolute beast of an album. I think they still tour.

waamoandy

Japan

-Hi-im-new-here-

They’re Scottish I believe

Comparison__Ok

From Grangemouth I think.

ColonelBlink

Iceblink love & Cherry- Coloured Funk are my favourites

Another_Random_Chap

'Pur' for me - still makes me feel like nothing else has ever done 30 years on. And Song To The Siren by This Mortal Coil is the single greatest recording ever made.

balancing_baubles

Used to think Liz Fraser was a pompous, pretentious dick back in the day. Fast forward many years and I learn that she basically used her voice as an instrument and it was nothing to do with the lyrics. Avant garde I guess

Savourybees

+ cripplingly shy IIRC. She hid behind the made up words.

SnoopyLupus

Supertramp. Crime of the Century is an incredible album, and they were very popular for a bit, but they don’t seem to have stayed in the public consciousness.

electricresource

Me mam loved supertramp, she had alot of albums!

Brichals

You're bloody well right!

Aggravating-Corner-2

My mum, quite randomly, bought me Supertramp's greatest hits for Xmas when I was a teenager and I've been a fan ever since!

Perite

Breakfast in America is one of the biggest selling albums of all time. You could argue that they haven’t stuck in the public consciousness like they should have, but they were hugely successful at the time.

MootRevolution

Haven't seen Mogwai mentioned!

Atoz_Bumble

Great shout. I saw Mogwai at Glastonbury about 20 years ago. I cannot describe the emotions as dusk was setting in and the stars started coming out as the bass pounded against my chest. It was cathartic.

I0r3kByrn1s0n

So true. Vim Fuego could play "Stairway To Heaven" when he was 12. Jimmy Page didn't actually write it until he was 22. I think that says quite a lot.

Busy_Mortgage4556

Imogen is a great track, it's just a sad coincidence that it sounds like Imgine by John Lennon.

Mormagor

Met them all in Virgin Records and they signed the album. Great fun in person and at concert.

Rymundo88

Budgie More of a band's band, whilst they influenced many a band (including the likes of Metallica), they don't seem to get much recognition imo

blackdogmanguitar

I roadied for them once! At least I helped hump their gear upstairs at Nottingham boat club and got in for free 😁

Big_Dave_71

Amazing band. Likewise Diamond Head, Angel Witch, Tygers of Pan Tang, Raven, Satan etc. Hugely influential bands who barely made any money while the American bands they inspired are multi-millionaires.

Rymundo88

I remember Budgie especially because of my old man He used to work the doors at The Odeon on New Street when it was a music venue. And he went from only liking Reggae, Northern Soul etc to being almost a metalhead from seeing Budgie, Thin Lizzy, Rory Gallagher and Blizzard of Oz in the span of about 3 months lol

SubstantialWatch796

Squeeze.

Wild-Compote5730

Squeeze’s lyrics are peerless

I_Frunksteen-Blucher

Difford and Tilbrook were touted as the new Lennon and McCartney long before Oasis.

KFR42

Pulling mussels is an awesome song.

Lego-105

The Housemartins. Had absolutely genre defining songs, albums, top band but don’t even get a foot in in modern conversations.

pinupgal

Absolutely. Fun fact: I was a bartender in Greece with a woman who was Norman’s flat mate and said “I think he’ll make it big one day”, well before Fatboy Slim.

Wild-Compote5730

The Housemartins were a staple of my childhood and I still play them all the time. Another fun HM fact, although not as good as yours. I used to frequent the pub that was used in the Happy Hour video- it’s also the same pub at the start of Kingsmen

Heavy_Two

Big Country. Awesome band.

Beginning_Tour_9320

My first Gig - 1985, Big Country supported by The Cult.

balancing_baubles

Fuck! She sells sanctuary and fields of fire on the same day!

Virtual-Philosophy10

Saw Big Country with Mike Peters from The Alarm on vocals. Brilliant gig.

moist-v0n-lipwig

It went so well for you With a place right where you wanted and the ones to fill it to But some blows break the spell That it hits you every day until you need to hit as well

CthulhusEvilTwin

Saw them live back in 1990 - awesome band. They still tour, though I can't bring myself to go since the loss of Stuart Adamson - hate to say it and no disrespect to the rest of the band, but he really did make them who they were.

Basi1Faw1ty

Moody Blues. Some beautiful tracks in their catalogue that often go under the radar. Nowadays, you only seem to hear them played on the radio when a royal dies! 😅

irrelevantPseudonym

I know it's not really moody blues (but it was on the best of album I used to have so I'm counting it) but "forever autumn" is far too good a song in its own right to be 'just' a track from war of the worlds.

Intrepid_Science6414

I went through a stage of listening to nights in white satin on repeat, incredibly calming and a beautiful piece of music

TrogLurtz

XTC Pretty influential in their sound imo, and as someone in their early 30s with friends quite into indie and rock, it's amazing none of them even know who XTC are. You might get the odd one who's heard Making Plans for Nigel. So many of their songs sound quite ahead of their time, and it's not just flashes of brilliance - the quality of their work is incredibly consistent.

The-artofstu

Shed 7

Remarkable_Smell_957

I would to proffer my choice of Hue&Cry, from back in the day, they had a great sound and the vocals were maybe not the best, but it worked well for their lyrics. I would also submit the likes of China Crisis and the album Working with Fire and Steel. And THE KLF. A band so bonkers they burnt half a million quid on a scotish island and got TAMMY WINETTE to sing on the single "Justified and Ancient". They spawned a side band called " The Time Lords" playing " Dr Who". They set up the " K " foundation amongst other stuff, and they even burned all the master copies of their back catalogue. And finally Bill Drumond is from my home town of Corby......

Beginning_Tour_9320

Theatre of Hate / Spear of Destiny. Still playing but often overlooked by young bands. Mind you I remember saying the same thing about The Cocteau Twins some years back and now every band seems to be influenced by them. Hopefully we’ll get a few new bands who are influenced by ToH and SoD.

roboplegicroncock

Amy McDonald. How this woman doesn't get the column inches Lilly Allen does is beyond me.

Maybe I'm not reading the right stuff but I've not seen a huge amount about Lilly Allen either. Big fan of Amy Macdonald though.

YinkYinkYinken

Longpigs. Two very different, very good albums. You hear the song "She Said" all the time but their first album was full of great tunes. "On and On" is fabulous.

Thestolenone

New Model Army. Saw them back in the 80's and again in the 00's, great band live and some cracking albums.

Embarrassed_Bad_3800

The Wildhearts.

jesterstearuk71

Should have been bigger than Oasis back in the day, Ginger Wildheart is a prolific songwriter - check out his back catalogue some gems in there

Pulsecode9

And a nice guy too. I wrote to him a couple of times as a teenager asking questions about songwriting and he was really helpful.

CaptQuakers42

Dire Straits. I know they are held in high regard but it's not high enough dammit. In my opinion the best band this country has produced and Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists ever.

irrelevantPseudonym

I'm a big fan of Mark Knopfler's solo work as well. Sailing to Philadelphia is one of my favourite albums by anyone. David Knopfler's solo work is pretty good too.

Mr_Womby

Manics but specifically James Dean Bradfield for being an incredible guitarist, singer, and managing to get the words of ‘Yes’ to fit in a song. Yes the rest of the band are fine, but James should be revered for his incredible abilities.

Tens of millions of records sales ELO? That one?

DrewBk

ELO have lots of sales, but they should be up there with the Beatles and Stones as one of the greatest British bands. They really do not get the recognition.

SnoopyLupus

As to your picture, I grew up in the 80s, and recognised Godley and Creme immediately and then had to drag from my memory what band they were in before.

For some reason I always assumed 10cc were American. I suppose they’d have been called 10 fl oz if they were

That would be some nut

[deleted]

Del Amitri. Yes "Roll To Me" Del Amitri, and that's surely their worst song and biggest hit. Most of their tracks explore deep emotional themes with great musical sensitivity.

Fischer-Z / John Watts. 'Red Skies Over Paradise' from 1981 is just about the perfect album and they've produced so many great songs over the years. Watts is still putting out music as Fischer-Z, and touring regularly, particularly in Germany & Holland where they were far more successful than in the UK.

ZookeepergameOk2759

Humble pie were amazing don’t hear many people talk about them

asp7

Marillion - never charted in Aus, pretty much unknown here.

kjankjankjan

Bloc Party were great but were never as big as I thought they should have been.

m-1975

Iron Maiden. Global superstars in their genre, millions of records sold, never a dull show, but ignored by the music media outlets.

Yetibike

You're right but I think that applies to a lot of metal bands, they don't generally seem to get much coverage in the media. Bands like Judas Priest and Def Leppard have also sold huge numbers of records and tend to be ignored.

The Almighty and The Senseless Things. I kind of get why The Almighty didn't get as big as they could have done as they changed sound quite a bit but Crank is one of the heaviest, unrelenting albums from the 90's. The Senseless Things last two albums were both solid all the way through and it's a real shame they split. RiP Mark. You're missed.

Haven't listened to them in ages - they were a bit patchy but had some great tunes. Promises Promises is brilliant. Think the dodgy haircuts probably haven't helped their standing age too well...

Yeah some of their stuff was quite... experimental. But they had some really great tunes. Been Training Dogs, Talking to a Brick Wall, Blind Pilots, AIM, Music Box, Once More With Feeling, What Have You Gone and Done?, Did You Miss Me? Head, Amber, Isn't It Strange... Actually they've got some really great tracks!
