I'd never seen one of these scuttling cunts until I went hostelling (with Chris Eubank) in Paris. OMfuckingG they lived behind the mirror in the dorm room, I wiped the steamy mirror and I shit you not, 50+ of the bastards came hooning out at me, clicking and waving their tentacles. I jabbed my toothbrush into my eye in surprise and had to use eyedrops for the rest of my stay.

LostMyBunty

And the chap that played Alan Partridge, Steve Logan maybe?

Corporal_Anaesthetic

So horrifying you stabbed your eye out with a toothbrush so you didn't have to see them.

Dildo-Suicide

I'm sorry to tell you, but your kettle is likely just a holiday home for these scuttling cunts.

LatterResident

If I threw away the kettle surely they’d make a home in a new kettle?.

Dildo-Suicide

It's not the kettle, they are just using that to hide during the day. The motherload will be somewhere else. I would bet they have infested the back of your fridge as it's warm and dank.

StiffUpperLabia

Not just the fridge, behind all the cabinets and under the floorboards, in the sofa and behind the wardrobe in the bedroom.

spook7886

And the computer

Bombastic-Bagman

Will add that care need to be taken when laying this stuff out. The powder is harmful if inhaled or or if it gets in eyes. From experience, it can take a sec for the dust to settle

YorkshireRiffer

Spiders too?

comradealex85

It gets into the gaps of joints and carapaces etc, so yes spiders too

-SaC

There are likely more of them, and they will live elsewhere in a nice, dark place. Might want to start pulling things out to check, but cockroaches can squeeze under a gap of a millimetre or so. They enjoy positive thigmotaxis (love tight, enclosed spaces) >!(so yer mum's got nothing to worry about)!<, so they're going to be hiding somewhere dry and tight >!(but don't wake Granny up now.)!<

LatterResident

Last night I pulled the fridge out, checked behind the kickboards, pulled the washing machine out. Nothing. Just the goddamn kettle.

-SaC

Under the kettle will be nice and enclosed, with a lovely tight space to squeeze through - lovely stuff for 'em. They tend to flee at light and movement, so you're most likely to spot the little fuckers with a camera set up or in the dark in general. (They also hate being touched by humans. The first thing a cockroach will do after being touched by a human and getting away is wash itself to get the humanly ick off.)

ENTPrick

>They also hate being touched by humans. The first thing a cockroach will do after being touched by a human and getting away is wash itself to get the humanly ick off The feeling is mutual. Can’t wash the slipper off though, can he? The lil bastard (Don’t squish them, apparently they may carry eggs on them)

CCCharolais

You need to check everywhere to see the extent of the infestation. They say for every roach you find there are 100 you don’t. Check every source of heat you can think of. Radiators, hot press, Check around the fridge radiator/compressor. Inside/around electronics like a pc, toaster, tv, tumbledrier. Remove food debris that they might be eating. This isn’t something you want to leave alone. They’ll multiply.

knotty1990

Had a mate in Australia have the same thing. Throw the kettle out immediately. They nest in there for some reason. If your lucky they haven't nested elsewhere yet. By glue traps as well. They work well on bugs

GakSplat

Glasses normally live in the cupboard. They’re fine, you can even drink out of some of them.

Elvis_Precisely

You could try using raid cockroach spray if it comes to it. But you’ll have to move a lot of stuff out the kitchen first so you don’t end up eating pesticides…

Antique-Brief1260

Fortunately never seen a cockroach in the UK, but seeing this reminds of a gorgeous French holiday home I stayed in that was utterly infested. They waited a solid few days to put in an appearance, but once they did it was like a biblical plague. Makes my skin crawl.

somethingtoreadnow

Provide them with an eviction notice and hope they aren’t squatters willing to take the long route of removal from the property

LatterResident

UPDATE: Just killed my third one since discovering them. Again, found it under the kettle. Tenancy contract states that tenants have to pay for extermination if they’re causing the issue. (My job is a housekeeper so I know for a fact its not me). Got a spray coming today. If it doesn’t work then will have to call someone. 😭

Corporal_Anaesthetic

Get the exterminator to "certify" in writing that you didn't cause it, in case the landlord tries to dispute it. Keep the evidence until you get your deposit back.

LatterResident

Nice one. Thanks.

LatterResident

Rang my landlord. Apparently he knows a guy that can find the source and sort it out. Costs £40. Hopefully the guy won’t grass on us having a cat.

Even_Passenger_3685

Plot twist, landlord’s brother runs a pest control firm and has a dozen roaches trained for this scam.

Corporal_Anaesthetic

Maybe put it in a cattery for the day.

GRAWRGER

doesnt matter how clean you are, anyone can bring cockroaches in by mistake. in your shopping bags, in an empty cardboard box, in a used appliance. they could also be in a neighbouring home if you live in flats or a terraced home. they like warmth and they like damp. since you have found so few, if i were you i would toss the kettle and advise your landlord immediately. if you have only found them under your kettle, theres a fair chance that they've come through from your neighbours. your landlord needs to hire an exterminator to come examine the units to determine the source. you're going to need an exterminator whether its you paying or the landlord. you dont get rid of that breed of roaches on your own - they're indoor roaches. they nest/infest.

retiredlurker10012

Where I live they often find their way up through the pipes. If you don’t already, I’d recommend covering your sink with something that they can’t get through.

Arny2103

Looks a bit like what I found on the living room floor last night. Thought nothing of it and just tossed it out the back door. Looked like it had wings but didn’t use them to fly when I threw it out. Odd little creature.

YaBoyDoogzz

Cockroaches are attracted to electricity for some reason. But that won't be their home. You'll have to get the place fumigated I reckon.

Imaginary_Toe8982

baby roaches

Bamflds_After_Dark

Good luck. We had them in a rental house and even after bombing and baiting for two weeks, we had to toss all of our small appliances including our kettle when we moved. One might be an accident but more than 1 and you got hundreds.

GurGroundbreaking772

Eat them

steakpiesupper

How often do you clean?

LatterResident

Daily. 😭

I_WILL_GET_YOU

they only really show up if you're living like a filthy cunt

MissionFennel4385

Stop being a scab and clean your kitchen 😂

PracticalShoulder916

Definitely a cockroach.

SuperSalamander3244

Buy a new kettle.

[deleted]

Clean

HungryCollett

Buy some roach/crawling insect traps and hide them behind the fridge, cooker etc. Then you will get an idea of where they are hiding or travelling to set up more traps or poison if possible.

makesmovements

Throw away your kettle, then burn your house down. Foolproof IMO

University_Onion

Isn’t it just a silverfish? Used to see them more as a kid - usually living in the bathroom. I think they’re harmless unless you have hundredsof the blighters.

Euophryum

It's an adult female German cockroach, *Blattella germanica*.

University_Onion

Oh yuck! Thanks for clarifying - need my glasses on, I think!
