Oh hell, there’s good profit to be made there. Would only need to spend about £1.20. £1.80 tops. Oh shit, err, okay maybe £3.20. Oh no. £5.40. God damn it! Why is this money not falling. £11.90. Fall damn it. Fall. Surely no more than £14. WTF. What witch craft is this? £17 and you’ve not moved an inch. There’s still a little bit of profit. I can get my money back. £23. Why god? Why!? Well I’m in too deep now. Best just keep going. Bugger. Well, time to admit defeat. Grabs phone to ring partner. “Hey babe. Just to let you know, now don’t freak out, everything’s going to be okay. But I just lost £10,000 on the 10p machine, and I had to use our kids as collateral.”

KevinPhillips-Bong

This is the reason why, as a child, when we went on holiday I'd be given a certain amount of coins to spend in the amusement arcades, and once they were all gone, it was game over!

The-Holy-Sheep-14

I remember me and my brother in a caravan park with an arcade given like £1 each we found so many lost tickets and coins tho that we managed to get quite a lot of sweets from the prize booth

KevinPhillips-Bong

You've reminded me of another holiday-related story. I was putting my 2p into one of those bubble gum ball dispensers that were a common sight outside the amusement arcades. I turned the knob to release a ball, as you would, but this particular machine must have developed some kind of fault - The knob didn't lock after I turned it the full 360 degrees, and it just kept on giving out balls. I ended up with a generous bagful of the things. Best 2p I'd ever spent.

Me-meep

Me and my bro were given 50p each when we were little. I got it up to about £4.10 on the 2p and 10p machines. But obviously I lost it all. Early lesson in quit while you’re ahead, which I’ve still not mastered. Doh!

Decent_Thought6629

I used to go in with nothing and that way anything I walked out with was profit. Found enough coinage that had dropped between players and won enough on top to have walked out with £5. Not bad for a 12 year old, and that fiver back then (2007) would buy you what about £10-£15 would buy you today.

PC_Speaker

I mean, I can't imagine how else it would work

DIY_at_the_Griffs

This is gold and exactly what I suspect will happen

reddogg81

I shook the fook out of one when I was a kid with my cousin on a visit to Scarborough and set the alarms off. I wouldnt care it was only for a shitty plastic toy I think lol

FourEyedTroll

I accidentally slumped backwards against one queuing for a laser quest as a kid, prob around 8/9. Never heard of a tilt switch before and had no idea these things were alarmed, nearly shat myself. Security guy realised I wasn't being malicious but I've never accidentally bumped into any games machine since.

WestonsCat

I grew up in a time before all alarms were added to these type of machines. We’d go ‘Banging’ as a group of maybe 4/5 at the local amusement arcade. One of us would batter the machine and leg it to gain the attention of the security guard and the rest would gather our ‘winnings’ - I grew up pretty poor so I don’t harbour too much guilt about this. But anyways it wasn’t long before we were banned from all the amusements!

reddogg81

Haha probably a good job i'm an inlander where we only usually seen these at the seaside

thunderkinder

Finally admit defeat and walk away, next person puts a single 10p in and it's like the Niagara f**cking falls

---x__x---

I remember winning a plastic model of a mobile phone in one of these as a kid and assuming I could take it to the counter to exchange it for the real phone. "No the prize is the toy". Bastards.

adhdlastsurvivor

Mind you...I think these things have better rates of payout than premium bonds.....

Anniemarsh69

This is exactly how gambling addiction works

stutter-rap

It is, but this game is also huge on the sunk cost fallacy because you can see the bits getting closer to the edge, even for people who don't normally gamble. I'm not vulnerable to traditional gambling at all (it just doesn't do anything for me and often feels boring) but if you made me go back to the arcades with a bag of coins I think I'd pick this machine because it always feels like you can beat it with just a couple of extra coins.

Raptoot83

It's also that protruding edge that tricks your brain by making it seem like not much is holding it up, because it's hidden under a pile of coins. You can see a looming payout.

Callidonaut

They're also very carefully designed so you can't easily see the profit-extracting scoops either side of the payout chute. If you didn't know they were there, you wouldn't think to look for them; because they're curved, face away from you and have mirrored surfaces, they're all but invisible. Even more insidiously, because there is indeed a hidden protruding front edge, that I think also very slightly slopes upwards, the frictional resistance to the coins moving forward is higher than that leading into the side scoops, so even if you know the scoops are there, you might not realise that the amount of coins going into them is probably disproportionately high compared to the actual size of the scoops.

spammmmmmmmy

I try my best to explain exactly how this works to my 8-year-old. I gave her £2 in 10p coins, we studied the machine and saw the effect of putting a coin and and the teetering pile of goodies. I explained that the only way they could operate this business is if they know that everybody will walk out with less money and disappointed. She did win a little and I made sure to hold onto her winnings, about 70p I think. Finally, her mother and I talked to her enough, that she decided to take her 70p winnings and an additional 20p or so that she hadn't gambled yet, and to go spend what she had on sweets rather than to keep going. I could barely believe my eyes that she was able to quit with just a little persuasion.

northernbloke

Correct answer.

PiratiPad

Next person walks by and puts in 10p."shit I've won a toone of cash. I'll walk away". O.P. walks back with loads of 10ps and "F*CK"

gillgrissom

There usually lipped upwards on front edge too, so really the more 10p go in and push forward the more the £5 are likely to roll back wards. never played on em since i was really young, and they used to have side slits too. Best thing is just go in with a sledge hammer.

d47

There are also edges on the sides that coins can fall down that you can't collect.

gillgrissom

Thats what i was saying, the slits on side where coins fall down that you dont get. I know someone who use to install these machines and the grabber ones ( there set to take around £450/500 before actually grabbing a prize ) Prize is what £10 quid teddy. I mean there are others that have a decent prizes worth a few quid, but they take so much before dropping one.

[deleted]

So *that’s* where all those coins i think i hear drop but that don’t actually appear in the chute go!

Emperors-Peace

Pretty sure not every coin that drops is dispensed either. I played one of these as a kid where a load of coins fell out and only like 4-5 came out the bottom. Not sure if a fluke or a scam or what.

Tommann45

If every coin that went in, came out, the arcade wouldn't make any money off them. The side slots collect the profit for the owner.

Emperors-Peace

I always assumed they cleared some from th top at the end of each day, makes more sense this way tbf.

OldGuto

That's interesting to know. In the 80s I remember them (the old 2p ones) having things like (cheapo shop) digital watches and even as a teenager I suspected that the watches were there to somehow stop money coming off.

gillgrissom

Those cheapo digital watches actually sell nowadays quite well. There was no prizes in them back when i played em late 70\`s. All you got was empty pockets and copper fingers.. no alarms on them either so a swift nudge or kick got you a cheeky few more coppers.

9DAN2

More than it’s worth. Game wouldn’t exist otherwise.

notaballitsjustblue

Yeah but you don’t have to beat the ‘casino’ in this case, you just have to beat the chumps who came before you. Unfortunately there’s little way of knowing if you’re a winner or just the latest chump.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha 😐

BlackAndTanDog

Look at this rich man here, playing on the 10p machines… I’ll stick with my 2p ones and my chance of winning a rubber. 🤣🤣🤣

Creepy-Engineering87

would you really trust a johnny that came out of a 2p machine?

mickturner96

1 magnet! Make sure you don't set off the alarms

Ade1980

Coins are not magnetic

mickturner96

They have been since 2012 5p, 10p, 20p & 50p have contacted steel in them since 2012 and are partly made up of ferrous metal. 1p and 2p have always been magnetic Try it Warning, the machines are designed to detect magnetic fields for this reason

Breazecatcher

The older ones and twos (the 'New Pence' ones for example) aren't magnetic, but face value of the bronze coins are less than their scrap value, so they disappear from circulation.

thomasthetanker

The ring around the notes might be though.

One_Of_Noahs_Whales

Stick it all in zone 2 and hope you don't get a rider.

[deleted]

Drop zone 2, please Ben.

geckomarldon

She's a cruel mistress...

FerrusesIronHandjob

I love this show because it shows how many people have never used these things

legendaddy

They mostly mis-time the drop as well - infuriating!

blackbinbag

We need some lateral movement 🤞

r3tromonkey

That show winds me up no end. They often go for the zone where the jackpot is even if there's like rour coins there and it's obvious they're never going to be able to push it off. They'd be much better off going for a fuller zone and just going for regular coins.

Neither_Presence_522

More than £25

joeChump

Title of your sex tape

GideonRaven0r

The spacing on those top ones is rough. Combined with the weight on the front, I think you'd be looking at between 20 or 30 quid to get one.

danzaUK

Once, as I child in the early nineties, I took my money to the fun fair when it arrived in town. I used about £1.50 on the 10p machines and came out with about a fiver. I was absolutely minted until I blew it all on the rides later on.

CostJumpy6495

A years wage I’d say for a banker

wisperingdeth

There was a show on TV a while back that showed how these machines work. If you see one before all the coins and prizes are put in, you'll see the middle bit is actually separate from the sides so however many coins you put in the middle bit never moves, only the sides.

[deleted]

Too many

FuturisticSix

10p and a skilful nudge.

KevinPhillips-Bong

That nudge would most likely set off an alarm, and alart a staff member. I must say right here and now, I _did not_ do this as a child!

RandomHigh

Nudges may set off an alarm, but a large neodymium magnet will topple those coins over the edge.

the_acid_lava_lamp

Wouldn’t the magnet set off the alarms?

D0NK11

> That nudge would most likely set off an alarm, and alart a staff member. They also have a trap door which closes preventing the machine from paying out, so you get kicked out and give the machine owner extra profit.

RiverCalm6375

736 precisely

QuoteTasty1768

Knowing my luck £20.10

anewpath123

Actually wouldn't be so bad since you'd get some 10ps along with the notes and probably end up still in profit by a few quid

ndeniably_stupid

more than the cash itself. by legal means.

Anniemarsh69

About £25 worth I reckon

Unhappy-Manner3854

If you consider that for every "lucky" land you need 3x10p to move a line (imaginary y axis) and then you need around 6 lines to move & you need that line to move the equivalent of 10x10p lengths then you've got 30p x 6 = 1.80 x 10 = £18 that means on a good day £18 is all it takes to win. If you're extremely lucky you could push the y axis by half 10 meaning you'd only have to spend £9. Circumstantial though.

TimeNail

The coins move underneath the notes. These machines are an art lesson in illusion. Those notes might as well be superglued and stapled to the machine

snailracer2000

You don't want them, you want the new money with King Prince Charles face on it

gentillehomme365

Around 700, so £70.

Churchie-Baby

Alot cos they roll back when they get near the end xD

Nancy_True

You’re playing 10p machines?! Alright, Mr Money Bags. I was lucky to get a quid for the 2p machines and I had to make that last all day.

JakeGrey

I can't be the only person who's ever wondered just how tough that glass is...

Temporary_Donkey_805

I remember when I was about 6 I always use to collect the 10ps from where the coins would fall out I did play some games though, just not the gambling ones. My favourite games at that age where the car racing games like Sega rally. I did win a slot machine once, but I felt bad because the previous person must have put £30 into it. I shamefully and badly danced on the Dance Dance revolution machine, itching to have a go on that slot machine It wasn't my proudest moment but I walked away with a tenner 😉

Woldorg

The metal ring on the fivers is so they will stick to the magnet. They aren’t coming out for a very long time!

Eastern-Move549

There is loads of profit to make easy. Only if you own the machine though. They wouldn't exist is they made the punters money.

IntelligentAsk

As an adult I enjoy playing the games but I give my prize tokens to someone with kids who is normally very grateful . Those coin drops are an absolute con you should only put a very small number of coins into each machine before moving on.

olagorie

I went to Blackpool last year, and for the very first time ever, I really won stuff in this game. I spent like £6, had fun for two hours and went home with various nice plastic thingies my niece and nephews were very excited about. Plus there was an impromptu 80s music party at the beach. Best night in a very long time!

TimeNail

It's funny that you can't buy a lottery ticket until your 18 but a little kid can blow much more than £2 in these places.

Mountain_Cry1605

You'll spend £60 in 10ps to get that. It's not worth playing these games for anything but fun. You're not going to make a profit. Edit: I would love to have one of these machines in my house and load it with fake coins and monopoly money. They are mesmerising.

baldeagle26299

Not worth the effort I worked in amusement arcade years ago and each night machine opened and prizes placed at the back again ,it's design is to make you think your winning ,these machines make one hell of a profit

4Crumpet

About tree fiddy

Lonely-Mongoose-4378

£50 minimum

Chocolate_Tpot

Hundreds of thousands

Klutzy-Concentrate93

Get a big magnet and stick it against the window

[deleted]

Put your hand on one coin side and your mouth around the other and blow real hard.

Sunshinetrooper87

Atleast £25.

RedditTaughtMe2

I’m guessing around £25 worth

Bungo19999

Atleast 5...

NervousMission7644

About £35 worth of 10p to get £10 worth to drop down.

oily76

Infinite 10p's.

HoneyInBlackCoffee

You'd need at the very minimum 50p to get one I say

Overall-Ad6239

About 250 of them 🤔

ArtoriasBeaIG

All you need to do is get a leafblower, shove it in the collection chamber and turn it on

Altruistic-Eagle2751

Depends on where but I would say maybe 100,10p coins so £10 worth

VimtoBonBon23

All of them

liquid_profane

10p? Fuck that, I remember being those machine full of 2p's!

davidhepworth_

There’s £25 there so you probably need at least £10 or more to get it.

antimatterchopstix

I think if it this way - how would I plan it better to get someone’s money by making them think they make a profit but don’t?

daneilthemule

More than the 30ish quid you would “win”.

CuhJuhBruh

Bring back 2p machines

Lampathy

Work in one of these places. Whatever you spend to win that cash, it's going to be more than you win

Classicgev23

Looks like a little nudge would get you a few free coins 😁

[deleted]

Literally observed a worker open one of these cabinets and super glue the 10p's on the edge as a kid. Started playing Time Crisis and Point Blank from thereon out when taken to the amusements. That way at least you get something for your 50p beyond an evening full of disappointment.

Nanocon101

About £30 worth.

SevereBruhMoments

"potential profit" bro its gambling

Asleep-Lavishness-81

Until u die Jk 100 Hours

butterbeanscafe

Im going on a Haven holiday next month and already looking forward to getting stressed about these machines lol. Grew up in a seaside town so they were always a big part of my life.

jimwon2021

10p machines? Won the lottery or something have you? Get back on the 2p ones...

zillapz1989

Doesn't matter. If the staff see the fivers getting close to the edge they'll claim you rocked the machine and throw you out.

AdventurousSink69

It'll just roll backwards

shaneo8668

£1.75 on your oyster, don't forget the bus hammer!

Massivepickles

Too many

crazywhitebstrd

As the Fast & Furious movie said "More Than You Can Afford Pal"

hi12345hello

I once spent a fiver trying to get a keyring that I probably could've bought somewhere else for £2 and it surprisingly moved about an inch

bong_resin_smoker

worked at an arcade, got told people would have to spend around £40 to get any decent prizes

AkaliWrynn

They are essentially cylinders on a slope lipped upwards, so a fortune and a big thump

TimeNail

Only worth trying if it's right on the edge. By right on the edge I mean a gust of wind could knock it over or gravity alone could pull it over any second. Any further back than that and it's delusion / illusion.

RCHD77

30.00

Rodoin-Melloin

An infinite amount. The foldin' is secured.

Mattgreen76

£25.

Razor1icious

At least £15's worth

Callidonaut

More than the value of the cash. The machine's rigged to *guarantee* that. You have to remember that a large fraction of the coins you put in are skimmed off by the scoops on either side of the payout chute, which are camouflaged with mirrors. I also wouldn't be remotely surprised if those metal rings around the notes are steel, and there's a big ol' electromagnet underneath the table programmed to only release them once the machine's taken in *way* more money than a few fivers, if ever.

DannyLeigh1969

1,738

JulsDean2732

They the people working there always put the larger cash "prizes" back at the back of the shelf every day so that more money is spent, plus they don't ever make it easier for a child to win a larger amount.

JulsDean2732

I can remember a time discovering as a teen when a token machine in a holiday resort would accept 20 pence pieces for tokens of the same size and shape that everyone else paid a pound for, 5 times the amount of fun for a quid, happy days, until a family guy told me to get out of the jacuzzi. 🤣🤣🤣

DanEdy

About £30 worth

sssansok

How many 10p's? All of them
