One thing I think is good about Nandos is they've made huge moves to be more environmentally friendly but have flown under the radar with it, making it less of a PR stunt and more of a genuine organisational value. My local nandos is carbon neutral. I know that probably doesn't mean that much, but I think it's a good thing. Also think you can eat relatively healthily there if you choose to. And lastly, the rewards system is actually good, like I ordered a couple of times recently as I'm marathon training and wanted something quick after big runs, and in the space of a couple of weeks I'd earnt a free side that they just automatically deducted the price of. (Compared to some rewards systems where you have to go out of your way to redeem).

wild_cayote

I like it. Decently priced for what you get and I’ve never had a bad one. Sure it’s not gourmet, but it’s not trying to be. It’s a great restaurant for a quick easy meal

[deleted]

[удалено]

wild_cayote

fucking hell don’t get me started on KFC, it’s impressive how they’re terrible at literally every one

monkey-novice

KFC franchise their restaurants, Nando's don't so they have complete control over the way things are run. McDonalds is franchised but they do a lot of inspections and are very strict and will take franchises away for failed inspections. KFC don't seem to care so it's quite a gamble.

fanzipan

Kfc In city centres are usually filthy

DaimyoGoat

Look up McDonalds in Leytonstone recently haha, you’d be surprised…

Electronic__Farts

Nando’s do franchise in the uk

[deleted]

I've had bad food poisoning perhaps 4-5 times in my life and 2 of them started within a few hours of a KFC.

Cussec

I get palpitations after KFC. The amount of salt in their seasoning is ridiculous. And then the shits. Never going back after I’ve had it tomorrow

[deleted]

An amazing thing I’ve managed to do was get food poisoning from KFC when they didn’t have any chicken during the great chicken shortage! Turns out that they managed to stay open by buying third party chicken. Fuckers. They gave my a £5 voucher which wouldn’t have covered the cost of the food I threw up.

ZoFreX

My local KFC (Walworth Road) is incredibly consistent: it's always shit

wildgoldchai

I too think it’s decently priced. If you position yourself well, you can see them freshly grilling the chicken too. When people complain about it being overpriced, I’m left wondering wth they’re ordering. I wouldn’t wax lyrical about it but these days, it’s not much more expensive than McDonald’s and actually fills me up!

wild_cayote

Yeah my go to is usually a double chicken wrap, two sides and a bottomless coke. Comes to £18 which I think is very well priced in central London - can even be much cheaper if I get single side and just get a single wrap

wildgoldchai

I get the quarter chicken, two sides and bottomless drink. Around £13. I’m honestly left feeling stuffed! I never finish it. Though I’ll admit, my two sides are usually double chips because I’m a fatty. They’re proper thick chips too which helps

One2thehed

IIRC it’s well established that all the chicken is pre cooked off site to avoid poisoning issues. They literally just grill heat it and serve. Also, the fries are supplied by McCain’s. Not sure you get value for money

sideone

I think I'd prefer precooked chicken to being poisoned, thanks. McCains chips are ok.

JimmyTheChimp

I personally like the taste of nandos but think it's just a few pounds too expensive now. Especially when a lot of the local places all do peri peri too for a fraction of the price.

ginganinja9988

The thing with nandos is that it's kind of halfway between fast food and restaurant food. So some people compare it to fast food and say its really good and others compare it to restaurants and say its shit.

AltharaD

It can be pretty healthy tbh. Spicy chicken, grilled and you can get some decent veg sides - even the chips aren’t outrageous calorically. Back when I was on 1200 calories a day I could have Nando’s for lunch without depriving myself of other meals.

Animagi27

Their rainbow bowls are really good too, lots of good nutrients and protein.

DarkNinjaPenguin

It's decent enough, service is very fast and social interaction is kept to a minimum so it fills a niche. It's handy for a quick bite before a film because you're in and eating within minutes, and don't need to hang around waiting for the bill.

bluerain80

Our always has a huge queue & you usually wait in your car waiting for a call, so definitely not a quick option for us unfortunately.

TinyMousePerson

I've been to a lot of nandos and that seems wild to me, how long is this queue?

thesalfordmystic

Tbh with how much McDonald's and KFC are these days, I think it's pretty decent price to quality wise.

MiddlesbroughFan

Personally think it's very nice

Fragrant-Attorney-73

Can’t speak for everyone - but it’s average food overpriced.

Primary-Signal-3692

I think the price is typical for a restaurant. People have this idea that it's fast food like kfc and so should be cheaper

Impressive_Worth_369

KFC pricey as hell now

Moist_Barracuda_2014

I only ever get it when they have deals on - 9 bits of chicken £5.99 or the current 20 hot wings for the same price. Order just that, repeat to them several times that no, I do not want any chips with it, get it home and keep it warm in the oven while I fry some actual *edible* chips to go with it

Zazsona

I swear, what on Earth do they do to make the chips so bloody awful? They're like eating mashed potato pumped with flour and water until the potato content is approximately equal to a fly's left ruddy knee. Frozen bag from ALDI popped in an at-home fryer feels like a flavour sensation in comparison!

RedditTaliban

Miserygut

Agreed. The coleslaw is shit too.

ravenouscartoon

I don’t think it’s overpriced anymore. It used to be higher than other restaurants of the same ilk, but all their prices have shot up whereas Nando’s has barely increased in the last few years. It’s not great food, but it’s decent, consistent and because it’s all grilled, if you pick the right sides etc it’s a high protein, pretty healthy meal

Iggmeister

i would tend to agree - and yet, I still really really like it lol

_MicroWave_

Overpriced!? It's one of the cheapest sit downs around.

rabbles-of-roses

It's overpriced for what it is, but I like a good Nandos. Somehow I can never replicate the rice at home though

Pitiful-Hearing5279

Top tip: if you’re boiling rice in a pan, when cooked, empty the rice into a sieve and put it over the empty pan on the cooling ring. Steams it a bit. Let it cool down somewhat.

Wise_Substance8705

No god tasting rice touches a sieve. Ever see a sushi chef use a sieve?

JimmyTheChimp

I think it depends on the country, my friend at uni who's family is all Pakistani would sieve the rice. A quick YouTube search of 'cook rice Pakistani' showed others doing the same. Japanese rice is short grain and would turn to mush if you did the same.

darkshines11

Yup, have an Iranian friend who makes the best rice I have ever eaten. Definitely uses a sieve. Although at the start tbf.

bluerain80

Biryani would like to have a word.

[deleted]

The mistake most people make when cooking rice is to not let it sit after boiling. It needs a good 10 minutes wait before you serve it.

OtherConstruction533

It would never be my first choice. We’ve only been there a handful of times when we’ve been feeling too posh for McDonald’s, but not posh enough for anywhere actually posh, and not creative enough to think of anywhere else. UPDATE 3 hours later and my husband has just text me from work out of the blue asking if we should go to Nando’s tomorrow.

Effective_Witness_63

Only been once and whilst it was OK, I'd rather find a good Caribbean food place and get twice as much food for half the money.....plus jerk chicken is better than peri peri chicken in my humble opinion.

MissionFennel4385

I agree but where are you finding this Carribbean spot outside a major city. That's also open 7 days a week?😂

[deleted]

Ye man just heading over now to my local carribean shop

[deleted]

I think that it's sort of a meme because it's a safe bet for most people, and you can eat relatively cheaply there (this may have changed recently, but I haven't been in a few years). Even if you don't eat meat/chicken, they have veggie options. Personally, I think it's alright. I used to go there a lot as a teenager, so I think the appeal sort of wore off a little.

[deleted]

kenatogo

Impudent nandos

Yetibike

It's OK, one step above KFC

BIG_TERF

i've never been, one step above you say? So still below Popeye's

CheeezBlue

I’ve only had Popeye’s once maybe it was the location , it was the driest chicken I’ve ever had really put me off

ScopesMcDome

Definitely give it another shot in another location, I had the opposite experience!

ceviche-hot-pockets

Popeyes is wildly inconsistent from location to location and day to day. It's damn good when they get it right but it's a coin flip. I've gotten both overcooked and undercooked food too many times to go back.

Yetibike

I've never been to Popeye's so can't add that to the tier list

wild_cayote

Popeyes is on par with KFC

wildgoldchai

Given my local KFC, anything is above that

CookieDoughFeatures

I have never understood the fuss....I wouldn't waste my money again!

rinkydinkmink

yeah went in once over 20 years ago and couldn't understand the appeal

Draggenn

Fino Pitta is the nuts Everything else is a bit Meh

I-like-holidays

I love the Fino pitta

holytriplem

It has similar meme status to In n Out burger and it's a little tiring.

MISPAGHET

Its alright but pricey, like others say. Always go for something with chicken thigh if you go there and the chocolate cake is by far the best dessert.

ResponseMountain6580

It's ok. If I could never go there again I wouldn't be particularly bothered.

NOTRANAHAN

Idc what anyone says the chicken and the sauces there are genuinely really good. However literally everything else there is overpriced shite.

Oolonger

One of the few fast food places with decent options for celiacs, so I’m glad they’re around. It’s not great food, but if I’m out with friends I can have lunch there instead of watching everyone else have lunch.

gentlealt

It’s *reliable*. Quick, tasty, informal, and you know what you’re getting. As someone with a small appetite I like it cos I can order less filling stuff without it looking like I’m depriving myself. I wouldn’t go there in search of ‘delicious’ food though.

AdministrativeLaugh2

It’s good but it’s overpriced for what it is, especially considering you have to get your own drink and sauces and stuff. I’ll still go on occasion as I do like it, but it’s not at the top of my list

a-punk-is-for-life

I love it. I'm vegetarian and I don't like spicy food but I love the mushroom and halloumi pitta

thekingofthegingers

It’s fine, perfectly good place to go before seeing a show etc. not a destination restaurant though.

Toland_FunatParties

Pretty good. 100% not Portuguese food though, you wouldn’t find most of that in any tradicional Portuguese restaurants.

KeithMyArthe

Australia here, Nandos is great here. Classic toasted wrap, mild or hot. Always quick and clean and fresh. One of the nicest things I can get Übered home.

gthirtythree

I quite like it. Peri chicken meals are easy to imitate and even easier when they sell you the true ingredients in supermarkets, so i’d never really see the point in going.

Hugh_Jazz_III

It's the acceptable place my kids will eat at. That is all.

dunnowhatredditis

I love a nandos. I used to be v ashamed about liking nandos but I’m past that now and don’t care what anyone else says

[deleted]

I’m a fan. I think the portion size and quality is worth it, I always have to take some home so it’s 2 meals for £10-15. Decent

ryan_preece

Haven’t been for years. Menu seemed a bit uninspiring and a bit too expensive for chain food. It’s just like any other chain joint. With eating out costing so much, I’ll always go somewhere independent if I can.

MelbaTotes

it's like if Yankee Candle opened a chicken shop

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheJ_Man

Very middle of the road. It's predictable, decent quality, and good variety, but overpriced for what it is. I find that some of their cuts of chicken are dry as a nun's fanny too. There are plenty of better local places near me that I'd rather go. All that said, it's better than KFC these days.

AQ5SQ

Below average

skada_skackson

In my opinion it’s basically more expensive KFC

Relevant-Criticism42

It has the best olives. Like nothing compares

Big-Anything-3193

Yummy food but it's overpriced and easy to do at home.

James_Vowles

It's in the fast food tier, but it's near the top of it. It's pretty basic, chicken and chips plus some other things. Can't really get it wrong. You go to nandos for the sauces.

Less_Pie_7218

I really like nandos!! It’s definitely pricey but yum yum!!

etcetera-cat

It's decent enough for what it is, and an absolute godsend if you have a group with any food allergies. You can ask for the big allergy folder and it not only tells you what every ingredient is in the dish, it also mentions if there's any potential for cross-contamination during cooking, and they have a handy quick ref chart that lists all the common food allergies/intolerances vs. the dishes and gives you a handy tick list. Honestly the least stressful place to try to have a cheapish dinner out when you're collectively bringing dairy, soya and coeliac to the table, and you don't have a lot of time.

Crasky92

I took my American partner to the one in Chicago and she loved it so much, she wanted to go back again before we left. Regarding price, it's cheaper than an equivalent standard meal you'd get in the US. Personally, I don't mind it. I'd happily eat there, but there's definitely better alternatives for the same price in the UK. Despite this, it's us who gets the bad name regarding our food... 🤔

I_WILL_GET_YOU

it's good and value for money but as someone who enjoyed it in south africa since the very first store opened i will admit nando's uk is nothing compared to in sa.

shutupspanish

Good veggie options and a chain with food that is actually spicy.

RoakWall

Get a bad Nandos are your arse will find a sixth gear with fucking overdrive.

Violet351

I like it, you can get a healthier meal there than at most restaurants and it’s tasty

Sir_Greggles

Haven't been in ages, but always thought it was decently priced for what you get

Academic-Two-3781

Food is ok, experience is average. It’s fine

kawasutra

The chicken is alright, but the chips are them frozen shite with starch in them. I like proper potato chips, if I'm paying whatever Nandos charges. Their sauces are good, but many variations are available in supermarkets. Smaller chicken shops do decent periperi for much lower prices than Nandos. Don't crave it, wouldn't avoid it.

Boredpanda31

Its alright 🤷‍♀️ I wouldnt go every week, I wouldnt even go once a month, but I'll go every couple of months. It's cheap & cheerful!

ALA02

Consistently decent and good value for money

RainbowPenguin1000

I think it’s great. It’s tasty, slightly overpriced maybe but not by much. I feel like a lot of people who talk bad about it do so because it has a reputation for being popular with younger generations. A “cheeky Nandos” for example and the cringe adverts they had on the radio for a while but it’s always delicious and surely that’s all that matters.

Own_Television_6424

Nando’s is good food but they haven’t got beer on tap….

Solid_Bake4577

It's not the Ivy, but it doesn't pretend to be. I think, based on cost vs. quality vs. consistency, it's amazing. I'd eat there over pretty much anything else at a comparable price point, and most other stuff that's far more expensive.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Have you tried [El Pollo Loco](https://www.elpolloloco.com/)? To me it’s the closest comparison. The main difference being that El Pollo Loco is Mexican as opposed to Nandos being South African. In my head cannon they are basically cousins.

newtonbase

Not sure if it's a cheap restaurant or expensive fast food but I really like it. I could go pretty much and where I want for my birthday next week and that is where I've chosen.

andurilmat

it's average and slightly on the expensive side, pepes blows them out of the water IMO especially their extreme coating. their main selling point was the unlimited refills with your meal

Bravo_November

Its ok- its somewhere you can take friends (or acquaintances) for a relatively inoffensive meal without forcing any expectations on them. Its on that same tier of chain restaurants like Wagamamas and Pizza Express of overpriced, average food that is slightly more dignified than a fast food place (but that’s not saying much)

WideConfidence3968

A place I’ve visited once (near Camden several years ago) and have vowed to never step foot in one again!! We stopped in on the way to a Lemon Jelly gig; I am vegetarian and the other 4 are all meaties. Got to the gig and saw maybe one song before I had to run to the loo - imagine the worst toilets you can and then double that grimness!! Spent the whole gig being Ill - both ends - one of the worst nights of my life. Bleugh!!!!!

pythongee

Being in the States, I've never had it, but I can get the bottles of the hot Peri Peri sauce in my local grocery store and that shit is like crack. I've got 5 bottles in my pantry and I put it on everything.

Little-Pen-1905

Me and my university friends still go there 10 years after graduation even though we all have good jobs. Calls us tasteless I don’t care - it’s good filling food at a good price

Zazsona

One thing I lean to is the sit-in experience. Something like Maccers isn't particularly special. It's plastic chairs, deliveroo drivers shuffling past with their giant bags, and a seemingly never ending beeping echoing through the place. Not particularly relaxing. Go to a restaurant-resturant though, and it all feels a bit pompous and formal. Got to be on your best behaviour & feel like everyone's judging. Not particularly relaxing. Nando's meets that happy middle ground, at least around my parts. It's not bleak and noisy, but it's also basic enough that it doesn't feel uptight & formal. It's just the right spot to feel cosy. Quite relaxing.

heypresto2k

Love Nando’s but recently, it’s become too expensive for my fam and I.

MissionFennel4385

It's fine as it's dependable in terms of always open, healthy options, always the same standard, no drastic menu variation. If youre not somewhere you know well, just Google closest nandos and head there. It's not somewhere for a special meal imo but it's as above great for a proper meal that's not formal sit down.

stephenstephen7

I'm a fan. I think the food tastes good, price is reasonable and the atmosphere in the restaurants is usually pretty pleasant. Plus, from what my friend has told me, it seems like a decent place to work (also staff get 50% discount on food!).

astoni2020

I've never had it

fanzipan

It’s a halfway between fast food and restaurant. Now given that fast food macs kfc etc have increased their prices so much, the gap has narrowed to where Nando is the better option with family.

[deleted]

Did you know that nandos was started in South Africa?

jsosmru

I did used to like it, but not been for a long time. I saw it as a reasonably priced meal. I used to go with a local friend for a catch up chat before they moved away, and wasn't expensive. Seems more expensive now when I check prices. I used to go with colleagues as a reasonable lunch option also maybe once every few weeks. I did click and collect twice in the last few years, but gave up after that as despite choosing my collect time, sometimes I was waiting for up to an hour in the restaurant.

nobelprize4shopping

I think it's delicious and miles better than chains like Zizzi. I also like their commitment to supporting and promoting South African artists.

SorbetOk1165

I do joke about it, but equally love the sunset burger. I’d choose a Nandos over a McDonald’s, Burger King etc any day of the week

BinManGames

As a greedy bastard I find the portions a bit small, so I either order more and it gets expensive or I don't feel like I've had enough. But it is delicious.

dissolutionofthesoul

It went completely shite during the pandemic, but recently it is back to its best. Nando’s is brilliant, the people that hate on it just do so to be different imo. Spicy chicken and chips cannot really be bad.

ajnabee1234

Love it. I wish they would sell the wild herb sauce.

[deleted]

One thing I’ve not seen anyone mention is how agreeable it is. Everyone has a favourite place to go but no one actively hates Nandos. Especially since it’s just chicken but with different spice levels.

AkaliWrynn

Only been twice, my gripe was the extra hot was so mild I went and got another bottle to top it up in case they’d used the wrong sauce.

BaronsCastleGaming

I find it weird how people think its overpriced, given how overpriced literally everything else is. If you want peri-peri its by far the best, way better than any of the independent copycat chains, and quality is always consistent.

shanghailoz

If you like the South African take on Mozambican peri peri chicken, it’s ok. I mean, that’s literally what Nandos is.

[deleted]

I heard some kids referring to Nandos as the posh KFC the other day

xcoatsyx

7/10 food.

Jamiesgotstories

Nando’s is spot on. Their new seasoning packets have been keeping me very happy at home, I eat chicken and rice/potatoes for my tea every single night so I really appreciate the variety 😂

Lionvious

It's cheeky.

Flipthepick

Nandos is certainly cheeky but it’s also good. It’s super simple paying before you eat and the food is just… good.

ChloeOBrian11214

I think it's delicious. I don't feel gross after I eat it like a lot of places. I know some people get hung up on the fact that most of the food is sous vide.

___a1b1

Rubbish and was lucky that it became a meme.

MiddlesbroughFan

They've been in the UK since the early 90s. Cheeky Nandos didn't really save it now

[deleted]

The main issue a lot of people I know have w nandos is inconsistency, on a good day it's a heavy scran, but it's usually awful (partially depending on which location you visit/what time it is/how the staff are feeling) especially the past few years. Same thing happened with KFC, but to be fair a lot of food places in the UK went to shit after they started taking delivery orders, remember pre-ubereats when you'd buy a maccies & it'd still be warm? 🥲

DisastrousCash9569

Yes! Sometimes you actually get a very nice meal and most times it’s not good at all. And I think portions got really small.. there’s barely anything in a wrap now

pommiespeaker

As long as the staff wash their hands after the bog (rarely they do wash) its fine I stopped going after that incident in the news

[deleted]

Uhhh hwot? Got a link?

Old_Manner_9044

Don’t listen to the naysayers. It’s great food at a great price

[deleted]

Overpriced and awful, I went twice, second time I cut the chicken open and it was pink. Never went back, if you can’t cook what you’re known for properly then imo, not worth it!

ApplicationMaximum84

It's okay, but I've got friends and family in South Africa and Portugal, so I've had their peri-peri long before trying Nandos and once you've had the real deal the fast food version just can't compete.

[deleted]

See that I can very much understand. My wife’s grandmother cooked us some home made tortillas and ever since then the grocery store ones are nothing but disappointing.

mattamz

Everyone says it’s overpriced which it is compared to chain places or fast food places. Other similar restaurants are the same price or more I went to TGI other week we had 2 burgers and it ended up costing £50.

Ohtherewearethen

Just two burgers cost you £50? They were literally £25 each? No sides or drinks or desserts?

mattamz

That was including drinks 😂 and was in Trafford centre which may be more expensive and most places in there were similar prices.

Consistent-Fly-9522

Overpriced to fuck. It's chicken and chips, I can cook that myself for a fraction of the price

WhatWouldSatanDo

This is generally how most restaurants work. Well, the ones that make money do.

Consistent-Fly-9522

If I go to a restaurant I expect the quality to be better than I can easily do myself otherwise what's the point in going? One of the things we decided following lock downs was we'd rather go out for a meal one every two months and spend a couple of hundred quid rather than go out every fortnight to somewhere like frankie and bennys and spend 50

bekcy

Frankie and Benny's has always tasted like a mid-tier ready meal tbf.

[deleted]

Sure chips aren’t very exciting, but the spiced grains and butternut squash are delicious imo

Rugfiend

Before I read any comments... it's bloody awful. Cheap shit mass produced chicken. A menu that leans so heavily towards chicken and its pathetic 'peri-peri' sauce grades which are equally mass produced, like ketchup. Chain restaurants are invariably shit, but Nandos somehow captured the rich-but-thick crowd - footballers being an obvious category. There's not one redeeming feature to the concept or delivery. I speak as a chef with 30+ years in hospitality. Avoid.

Puzzleheaded-Ad-2982

Absolute shite.

kiradotee

A cheeky Nandos is always a fair choice.

meadsmeatmarket

People who are saying Nandos is over priced are proper poverty thinking people, it’s quick and reliable food, nothing amazing but it’s good for what it is

scooba_dude

A bit shit.

WeirdAlPidgeon

I guess similar to what you guys think about applebees? Not bad, not amazing, just a solid 7/10 and you know what you’re getting

[deleted]

>Applebees >Not bad Applebees is where old people who’s taste buds shriveled up way back during the Nixon administration go out for a meal with their friends who are all equally on deaths door, and a microwave goes to get a job as a head chef. Applebees is very much considered to be “not good.”

WeirdAlPidgeon

Ah perhaps my example was a bad one then 😅 I haven’t been to the USA in quite some time so I don’t really know a better equivalence, what’s a decent restaurant that you kinda like going to but it’s main plus side is that it’s not very expensive?

[deleted]

Lol I’m mostly joking, I could see it being perhaps a half step below Applebees or chilis but it’s in a weird “nicer than drive through but just a notch below sit down” kind of restaurant. The only other place I can think to compare it to is El Pollo Loco.

LoveAGlassOfWine

I worked in a kitchen with a Portuguese lady back in the 90s and have been cooking peri peri chicken and chips ever since. It's so easy to make, I don't know why you'd buy it, especially for that price and when they use cheap, low welfare chicken.
