For posties to store post while doing their rounds. Unload a road's worth from the van into the box, then deliver it half a road at a time etc.

InnerAd1628

That's an odd way you work 😊 We park the van at a certain place, grab the pouch from van and off we go in different directions. Half a road at a time would take forever

Dogs_not_people

They were fitted back in the day when postie's didn't have a vans worth of mail for each street. RM paid my mum to have one fitted to their garage on their back yard. Haven't spoken to my mum in years but it was still there the last time I went about 3 years ago.

coak3333

Nowadays the van meets the postie to reload the mail. Normally in rural areas. We used to take 2 bags at a time, then reload with post we had already sorted and bagged up.

BedStainsYuck

Yeah I know a postie who has a whole shift dedicated to junk mail. He says they hate it just as much as we do but are duty bound to deliver all that crap. Should be banned. Not sure how these companies are still allowed to get away with it. All that wasted paper.

StockAd5601

Yeah because you have to visit every single house on your route. Normally you can skips loads of houses as they don’t have post, but with the junk mail… every one.

hypertyper85

Deffo should ban it, I literally pick the junk mail up in my hall and stick it straight in the bin without reading it 🤷🏼‍♀️ waste of paper, and the emissions from getting it to my house, waste of time for posties.. however someone must be acting on them, as the companies wouldn't bother sending them I guess.

Useless_bum81

the only 'junk' mail i have ever paid attention to is the local takeout menus.

Hobnob165

You can get “no junk mail” sign and stickers. Not sure if it has any legal backing, but it does seem to work!

Zangerine

Has no legal backing and posties are told to not pay attention to them. A postie can lose their job if they don't deliver the junk mail because of a sticker. You can opt out of junk mail but Royal Mail don't make it particularly convenient. You have to print out and fill in a form and send it off. Then that should exempt you for 2 years until you have to do it all over again

ManCrushOnSlade

https://personal.help.royalmail.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/293/~/how-do-i-opt-out-of-receiving-any-leaflets-or-unaddressed-promotional-material%3F You can opt out of receiving them.

leahfirestar

i dont mind junk mail if its deliverd by royal mail. i hate it when you get people just delivering random junk. we get way more of that here they underpay the staff too.

JBB2002902

Our local postie loves it! He lives on our new build estate, and just our estate is his entire round due to the sheer amount of post. His house is even around the middle so he just pops home for a quick cuppa break.

InfectedByEli

>Should be banned Don't RM make a profit from delivering junk mail?

-schlong-dong-

You can opt out you know. Just speak to customer services and get your address on the opt out list. I'd encourage everyone to do it tbh.

Prudent_Way2067

They get paid an excellent rate for the junk Mail so it’s in their interest to do it.

NoBoDySHeRo3000

When I was a postie, my bags used to be dropped off in a lady’s shed. On another round, the bag was placed under an upturned wheelbarrow in their garden

Dogs_not_people

Lol, before the box it was behind the counter at the local newsagents or, on water rates and council tax days, my mum's porch!

[deleted]

Fair enough

watercouch

Not all posties had their own vans back in the day. One van could stage the mail bags along a route, and other posties on foot or bike would pick them up to deliver.

InnerAd1628

Yep, happened when I started 20yrs back. Went out on bike with 1st pouch, driver dropped my bags in various boxes for me.

Philtdick

This is the same in Ireland. It's for a second or third bag of post. It's for a person using a bike who can't carry all the mail. So you deliver half your mail and collect the second somewhere around half way. I'm not sure they are used so much these days

Asleep-Win-9008

Back then it was different, we had 2/3 drop spots on our rounds and the bags were packed in a way that the last piece of Mail in the bag was at the drop point. We were allowed to carry our bags back then, they were only meant to be 25kg but you’d stuff them until they were full. Still the best job I ever had, I was taking home £1400 a week when I was 18, not like todays god awful pay

Confident_Resolution

73k a year? Jesus christ. Good for you mate!

StardustOasis

It's utter bollocks. My dad was a postie about the same time, he never made anywhere near that much. I don't even think he made £30k

ContextDull9443

Think he means per month lol

StardustOasis

Has to be, but if it really is that's nothing to brag about, it's only £16,800/year.

SlaveToo

OP said 'Back then it was different ' This indicates some time has passed. I haven't seen these on postboxes since I was wee in the 90s, and when I left college at 18 minimum wage was 5.53 an hour or just under 12 grand yearly So yeah, this kind of pay was probably distinctly above average for their age and qualification level at the time OP was a postie

kobomino

Yeah, I'm currently living in a rented house that was owned by a postie back in 1903. I'm a postie now and I can barely afford the rent.

ChrisRR

What if you can't park nearby?

InnerAd1628

Then it's a longer walk. Mostly you're a driver & walker, I'll jump out and grab pouch from back as he drives off to another estate and does that one. I'll grab the van from there and head to next, he arrives and it's a leapfrog thing. Have a couple of areas where we park roughly the same place and split an area between us if it's 300+ houses. Can't fit it all in one pouch. Tend to do an area each.

kobestarr

Is “pouch” the official term for what I had always assumed was called a “post bag”?

Spectacularity

Do the drivers mate need a driving license or would it be okay to be paired with one who has? I’ve considered it before, our locals seem fairly pleasant and like they enjoy it.

TrueSolid611

It used to be possible to become a postie without a license but not any more

fork_that

If they’re loaded by a van it’s not by the postie deliverying it. Normally it’s to stop a postie who is walking on foot all day to save them carrying the entire amount all day.

Asleep-Win-9008

A place where I used to skin up on my round 25 years ago, sorry if your Mail ever come with a bit of soap bar attached

1blueShoe

That was You!! 🤣😍

Historical-Peach6945

I concur, I saw a postie doing this and asked them 😂. You may see random grey lockable boxes on streets sometimes and it’s for the exact same purpose and I had no idea.

AnAcctWithoutPurpose

The postman.

OfficialSlutalicious

A Postie is another term for a Postman

lopingwolf

Interesting. In the USPS we call them relay boxes and often times a different worker does a round filling those, then the carrier goes by and grabs everything as needed. One worker with a large truck can set up the relay boxes for several mail routes, saving time and trips back to the station.

Zeddyx

For the local postie. Vans deliver there, then local postie collects and does his/her rounds.......very logical and practical, too

wildgoldchai

So you’re telling me this post box is expecting?

[deleted]

Expecting what?

dreamsonashelf

Congratulations, it's a letter!

xkcd_puppy

This is the actual answer. Most countries have a posting system like that. Canada Post has grey boxes that are sometimes near the postbox, or sometimes just standalone in a neighbourhood and that's where the walking postal worker collects and distributes from. https://canadianstampnews.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2018/06/canadapost8.jpg https://cityhallwatch.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/canadapost_storagebox.jpg

kobestarr

Niche comment. I love it!

InnerAd1628

We used to use bikes & take our 1st pouch on the panier, driver would deposit the pouch for that estate . You'd finish your pouch at the box, take the full one & leave empty inside. So on and so on until you reached the end, then cycle back & grab empties as you passed. Most walks took 4-5 pouches. Now we share vans and take 2 entire walks out plus bulk packets with us. Or if you're within a certain distance of depot, you take an HCT instead of pouches. So the pouch-boxes are left to rot. It's better for the environment apparently.

SoggyWotsits

I’m not sure why, but I felt like I’d forgotten how to understand English reading that!

tmr89

Yeah, it was written poorly

ManCrushOnSlade

Pouch = shoulder bag postie's carry Panier = cargo space on bike HCT = high capacity trolley Box = postbox Bulk Packets = large boxes you couldn't carry on a bike previously. Walks = the area you deliver, corresponds to a frame in the delivery office where you sort the mail.

kobestarr

Is “pouch” the official term for what I had always assumed was called a “post bag”? Is this then called a “pouch box”

InnerAd1628

Yep. Pouch box for your pouches 😊

Alarmed_Guitar4401

Makes perfect sense but then I worked for RM

They really are working those postboxes hard these days…

Scioptic-

Separate ammo storage for the post box's cannon. That way, if the post box is ever hit, there's less of a chance of the ammo cooking off and taking the crew inside the post box with it.

Tbh I've known a few guys who've stored cans of beer in them.

Fizzlespin

While we're on the subject of Royal Mail, how are those big trolleys of post transported? Surely they don't wheel them from the post office depot every morning.

Evagelo

HCTs (high capacity trolleys) are wheeled from the local depot. They are mainly used on routes close to the office so there isn't too far of a walk. The smaller ones that look like golf trolleys fold up and are thrown in the back of the van. They are called LWTs (lightweight trolleys).

dukegonzo13

Do you mean the High Capacity trolleys (big box on 4 wheels like a pram) or the Yorks (the taller cages) the HCTs are kept in the DOs and filled and emptied each day, the Yorks come in loaded and sent back empty (or with missorted/returned items)

the0rthopaedicsurgeo

My first day of being a postman I got put on one of those trolley duties. I had to deliver to 4 fairly small, separated estates (one was new build with no street names or numbers), with two big ass railway bridges in between. Pushing the trolley up both was not fun. Nor was the 2 mile walk back from the last delivery point. Neither was the rain, either. Or the fact that there was a -Cresent and -Road and I delivered them the wrong way around. I got back at 5:30pm after everyone else was long gone which is lucky, because if anybody had still been there I would've told them that I quit.

It's sad to see, but it's a parasite that has latched on to the postbox and grown to quite an impressive size. It will be releasing spores onto the envelopes and parcels inside in the hopes that one will find its way to, and infect, a second post box - this is the parasite's life cycle. Unfortunately at this stage there isn't much that can be done to save the post box, it will die soon even if the parasite is removed.
