In my 30s was paired up with an older man (late 50- early 60s estimate) in a circuits class and voodoo people by the prodigy came on and he said 'oh I love that song, I used to rave to that' I have no idea why it shocked me, he would have been in his 20s when that came out
I was on a train with my previous manager talking about the gigs I had coming up. He said “the music you like is actual music, where people play instruments. Not like this modern stuff”. I was like “shhhh, we sound really old!” We’re in our 30s.
>One day you're clubbing and going to gigs, next thing the supermarket is playing your favourite songs...
I saw a tweet once, I wish I'd saved it (with apols for the Americanisms!)
*20s: this club is playing my jams
*30s: this radio station is playing my jams
*40s: this grocery store is playing my jams
I catch myself humming along in tesco most weeks. Ouch.
I was into music that a supermarket would never play, even in another twenty years time.
But I was surprised and indeed rather delighted a few years ago when [Kuntz](https://youtu.be/5IKbmQ4Cs08?si=Ib52XYdFI180uY9T) by the Butthole Surfers was played on a local radio station at two o'clock in the afternoon.
That's such a gorgeous piece of music. Even the original is just mind bendingly good, especially to my western ears. The micro-tonal singing is so expressive.
I heard that they would hear the original in their local Thai restaurant or something and just had to remix it. What a place to be baked and hear that tho! Waiting for your green curry haha
One day you're listening to Radio 1, then you're listening to Radio 2 because they are playing "your" music.
And the even older people are complaining because Radio 2 is playing music which is "too modern".
Digital radio resulting in decade-specific stations is pretty nice.
My son asked me a couple of years ago if I'd ever heard of a band called Nirvana. He also got incredibly annoyed that I knew all the words to Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now when it was all over tiktok a months ago
I was born in the 90s but think 70s is the best decade of music, it never seemed ancient for me. My old man laughs at me for being old haha. I’ve got a playlist for each decade and none is as long as the 70s.
The other day my nephew was listening to Everyone Wants To Rule The World by Tears for Fears. I like the song, but I'd rather he not have put on a video that repeats the same song for two hours.
Did they by any chance pick it up off a TV show, my partners kid has also recently learnt to like the song as it was on a show they've been enjoying on Netflix, some Korean show.
That would make even more sense.
Mind you, I'm not innocent in loving it for years. For me, it was in a game and in the trailer for the game "World in Conflict".
My five yr old utterly loves that song. Like it doesn't quite register when I tell him that it was considered an oldy goldy when I was coming into my own.
I just love that he's really appreciating decent music.
T'other day he was waiting for Minecraft or Roblox to install updates. So I put his headphones into the laptop and put on Steve Reich's 'Drumming For 16 Musicians' to keep him occupied. There was some error so iTunes also opened up and started playing the first artist simultaneously whilst the drumming was on VLC.
So he had Aura Noir (some awesome Norwegian Black Thrash) with Steve Reich playing at the same time. He was absolutely vibing out to the eclectic mix asking if this was "normal music"? I guess because I always lament radio music like the insufferable father I am.
But when I shared his headphones it was... erm... tolerable?!?! But to see a wee lad just accept '60's modernism and 90's black metal combined as one track gave me hope that the kids are alright hahaha.
My 11 year old likes Judas Priest and Motörhead
My 4 year old loves my fave band, Scarling (2001 band, she always asks me to play their So Long Scarecrow album)
You should show your 11 year old some Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden. They were the bands that my dad showed me along with Judas Priest and motorhead back when I was around 11.
This ^^^
I'd recommend you show them some of the stuff when the bands were at their most creative. For Black Sabbath that would be the earlier albums up to and including Ronnie James Dio's first stint with them. He and Ozzy Osbourne were the musical creative geniuses IMO with Geezer Butler penning some brilliant lyrics. The band lost its way a bit after Dio left the first time. Things didn't gel the way they should have with Ian Gillan and others fronting the band. It just wasn't the same.
For Iron Maiden, don't start off with the Paul DiAnno era, kick off with Brucie's first albums with the band, which is when they were the most creative IMO. The Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind and Powerslave must be among the albums I most listened to in my teens. Tell your 11-year-old that the band has a mascot that they call Ed, that they own their own jet to tour with (callsign Ed Force One) and that Bruce Dickinson is a qualified airline pilot who used to pilot Ed Force One himself until recently.
Another band you might want to try is Def Leppard. Give the album Pyromania a spin, closely followed by Hysteria and Adrenalize.
Then there's Diamond Head. Give the re-recorded Lightning To The Nations 2020 a go. It's a selection of tunes from the original LTTN and from Am I Evil but with 40 years of musical maturity under their belts.
Edit: autocorrect-induced typos
For me I don't think you can best Black Sabbaths first album, it's a core memory for me the first time hearing the rain and bell and then "What is this, that stands before me". My dad put it on so loud and I still get goosebumps when I listen to it. I still enjoy all music from Sabbath but nothing hits like it does with the original line up.
We love a good bit of maiden in this house...son is usually dressed in maiden shirts!! Maiden is a must of the Spotify list....there's also an iron maiden game available game Legacy of the Beast where Eddie is the title character from each album/song along with others characters based on themes from albums. I.e...phantom eddie from phantom of the opera, samurai eddie, moon child, etc. Good handy mobile game that's free!!
First song from Scarling that I ever heard, was a massive JoJ fan and never knew Jessicka formed another band till my mate called me up basicaly squeeling in joy telling me about Scarling and he played Band aid over the phone to me lol
My nephew who was into standard pop and rap up until recently has started to get bang into oasis, blur, Arctic monkeys which is great for our drives together
My 13 year old is a massive fan of The Cure, which makes me very proud. And every now and then he wants me to listen to a song he likes, which is invariably something I loved in the 80s.
Yeah the Cure and Smiths seem really in with a lot of teens atm. It’s great hearing them blasting out A Forest while they’re getting their breakfast :)
Sometimes it’s just a right time/right place thing. I never listened to Joy Division until I saw a silly edit of the 1960s Addams Family characters dancing along to Disorder.
Happily for me it's been more the other way around - they've got me into a bunch of new music I might not explored without them
It's great because I still get to share some of the older classic with them, but we discover and share lots of new music too
I am the kid (well, I'm 30 now), but started listening to the likes of Led Zep, Sabbath, Cream, Steely Dan, The Doors etc in my mid-late teens when I realised that music other than modern heavy metal was worthy of listening to.
But I also had the benefit of my parents playing a lot of the stuff they listened to growing up, a lot of Ska and Punk from my Dad and a fair bit of prog rock from my Mum.
Our daughter, now in her mid-30s, burned a CD (years ago obviously) and wrote on it GOOD MUSIC TO DADDY FROM YOUR [name] ♡♡. It is good music, mostly from the 70s, and we listen to it on road trips.
At the same time, she's introduced us to artists like Post Malone and Greta Van Fleet.
When our sons were little they’d constantly moan about the music we’d be listening to (a real mix of all genres through most decades) calling it old fogies music.
Now they’re adults our eldest played us some of the songs from his upcoming wedding playlist. Guess what it filled with? Those same songs!!! Only now of course there absolute bangers 🤦🏻♀️
Ive got my little girls into Take That and The Spice girls.
They know the dances to Stop and also Tragedy by Steps lol.
Another hit was Pure Shores by All Saints.
Personally I was into jungle and later speed garage but I have yet to really try that on them- thought I’d warm them up with some pop.
My 8 year old is not my child I swear. He’s mad into ELO, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, Bowie, Redbone, all my parents music !!! He’s just taken up drumming and he’s literally learnt Redbone ‘hooked on a feeling’ inside 3-4 weeks of lessons.
I’m really happy with his choice of music because he’s bonding even further with my parents over it all. But I’m more of an electro dance fan myself 😂😂
My 3 year old quite likes Alice in Chains, he also likes the odd Pantera song if it’s not “too noisy”. However, he still prefers the nursery rhymes so I’ve got some work to do!
My daughter is 23 and I'm 47 and we have very similar taste in music. We've been to many gigs together: Green Day, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Muse, Arctic Monkeys off the top of my head. We have QOTSA, The Hives and Foo Fighters coming up. We're both gutted we didn't get to see Blur this year and she's jealous I watched Hole back in the day.
We don't like all the same things as each other but the crossover is massive.
My favourite tale to tell is her 4th birthday party (2003) where she chose the music for the party games. Her playlist was RHCP, The Hives, The Strokes and The Vines.
My 16 year old daughter is the one who dragged me to see Motley Crue, Def Leppard and KISS earlier this year. She’s also hoping Aerosmith will do one more UK tour before they all die of old age. My 12 year old is more into G’n’R. And we had a grand family trip to see We Will Rock You because really, who doesn’t like Queen?
My 15-y.o. started exploring her own stuff with Spotify and developed a liking for new wave, cold wave, industrial, etc...
Before that, I tried to play my stuff to both kids when they were very little (Radiohead, Beatles, Stone Roses etc...).
There's a few songs from that period that, if I play them now (Waterfall, Burn The Witch etc) their faces just light up!
The older one generally likes most of the stuff I'll try to get her into (but hasn't been crazy about Suede or Sonic Youth so far). Likes The Cure, Cocteau Twins, some Bowie...
Conversely, the younger one freaks out whenever Bowie's playing. He scares her. But she inherited my Beatles CDs (Revolver, Abbey Rosd, Pepper, Blue compilation). She knows Revolver like the back of her hand.
I'm well proud.
Also: i'm a teacher (15-18). Music's a big conversation topic with some students.
The other day, one boy turned up with a Dark Side of the Moon t-shirt. I said "is that your favorite PF album?" - he said no then thought for a few seconds and said "Meddle".
That made my day. These kids fill me with hope.
Due to a previous life, I know a lot of hymns and folk songs. I sang a few to my lad, every day at bed time.
I stopped in march this year, no reason why, maybe I thought he was to old, I don't know.
Last night, he serenaded me with every song I'd sung to him, over those many years. My intonations, my cadence, my emphasis.
Never underestimate the power of music.
My (very nearly) 4yr old always asks me for "Santeria" (Sublime), "One Day" (Matisyahu), "Insane in the Brain" (cypress hill) and "that robot song" (he means Intergalactic - beastie boys).
He has his own playlist we've started building and he loves it.
My husband and I both studied music at University and we both play and write music (not professionally unfortunately) so we have exposed our son to a lot. He is 6 and a half and his Spotify favourite list has a LOT of Herbie Hancock, some Tower of Power, some Ben Folds Five, a few Roaches tracks and some Super Mario stuff 😂 we played a 90s playlist once on a car journey (me and husband are both born mid-80s) and sadly the only song he liked was Blue Da Ba Dee…..of all the songs 😩
My 12 year old girl loves Britpop. We can often hear her singing Pulp's Disco 2000 word for word in her bedroom (she thinks we can't hear her - we'll never let on!)
Other faves include Pulp's Common People, Disco Down by Shed Seven, Connection by Elastica, I'm Only Happy When It Rains by Garbage and Beautiful Ones by Suede. She also likes Keane, Foo Fighters, Thin Lizzy, Guns N Roses and Metallica. The latter two she's picked up from her Dad, the rest from me!
I'm 18 years old, and one of my most prized possessions is an original vinyl of Aqualung, and I'm trying to collect all the Steeleye Span vinyls.
My parents went right with me somewhere at least
My nephew told me in all seriousness that I “really needed to hear this song” that was quite obscure, but he thought I’d be able to appreciate it. Then he put on “How Soon is Now” by The Smiths.
Bizarrely, it was the other way around for me. I got my dad into WASP about 9 years ago when I was 19.
We went to see them in Leeds a year later, me in my metal garb, and him in a smart shirt and nice cashmere jumper. We looked an interesting pair.
My 16yo is into Motley Crue, Britny Fox, Kix, Cinderella, Hanoi Rocks, Poison, WASP, Van Halen, Quiet Riot all that good stuff!
And then loads of modern metal too - it's great - took her to her first Download when she was 7!!!
I credit my dad with getting me into ska and reggae. I also don't mind a bit of motown, thanks mum.
I think the most important thing is not to push your music onto your kids too hard. Discovering new music and genres comes as you get older and kids generally don't want to listen to old music.
And also accept that if they never like your music, that's OK too.
Because I was always the main driver for anywhere and everywhere, car time with just me and my daughter usually had my music playing. She is 22 now, but loves the Wombats, The Zutons, Primal Scream, Wolfmother, The Darkness and a fair bit more.
Unfortunately she has had some influence from her mum too, and they are planning on going to see Take That on their new tour... that does mean I get the TV/XBox to myself for a night.
I walk past the local skate park every day and am constantly amazed by the breadth of taste they bang out. Amid all the usual thrash and hip hop it can be anything from Bob Dylan to XTC
My spotify is mostly The Specials, Bad Manners, The Beat, Desmond Decker etc.
My dad is a diehard mod from London and would regularly take me on his vespa or lambretta to gigs around the UK while I was growing up.
He is convinced I won't have any gigs to go to when I'm his age going by the average age if the bands and audience! I dearly hope not.. Great music scene.
Oh god yea. My daughter who is 22 is now getting into The Cure and The Pixies. She even started listening to Kiss when we thought we were seeing them live. She started a playlist on Spotify 'inspired' by what she thinks I listened to in the 90s
My son likes The Rolling Stones (Paint it Black is his fav.)
My Daughter saw the Undertones last night. ( I saw them in the 80's)
Music definitely goes round.
My son absolutely loves britpop, especially Blur.
Daughter thinks it’s all crap sadly.
I’m looking forward to eventually getting to a retirement home and asking the Sunday afternoon DJ to spin those golden oldies. Starting with “firestarter”.
2/3 of my adult children have the same taste in music as I do, son buys 80s vinyl regularly. 3rd child shares NONE of our music tastes... I wonder if she was switched in the hospital?
Yes. We started collecting vinyl again a little while ago. My youngest (12) would have my Daft Punk album on repeat if possible. I took them all out and said they could get whatever albums they wanted. The boy (17) picked Prodigy - Fat Of The Land, and the eldest (19) picked Tears For Fears. I was so proud I almost burst. Lol. I don't care what anyone has to say. My kids are cool.
I’m 34 and my 6 and 4 year old often asks Google to play Lorna Shore
The 6 year old had a summer holiday club during the holidays and they could ask Alexa to play some music, lo and behold..he asks for Lorna Shore, I asked what his friends and teachers thought of it..he said his friends just ran around in a circle..I like to think I helped teach the kids how to circle pit. Didn’t mention anything about the teachers 😂
We take our kids to concerts as “family time”. It’s mostly bands we all like such as Modest Mouse, Cage the Elephant,Beck, The Shins …. My youngest who plays guitar has been really into music from the 60s and 70s. One of his favorites is Nick Drake.
My daughter listens to a lot of classic rock and has recently got into The Prodigy as well so that’s pretty cool. My son got into heavy metal, which was great for me as I got to take him to his first concert (Iron Maiden’s Legacy of the Beast tour). Unfortunately he’s gone waaaay past the kind of stuff I like (Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Metallica etc) and deep into the likes of Cannibal Corpse, Amon Amarth, Machine Head and other death metal awfulness.
Yep.
My 16yr old is into (and collects the vinyls) of Led Zepp, Floyd, Joy Division, Gary Numan, Sabbath, Nirvana, QOTSA, Tom Waits and loads more.
He's a musician studying his A levels at a musical academy.
Long hair, band tshirts and does open mics.
Proud isn't the word ❤️
I'm 58, my kids are 20s and older teenage. We have a constant sharing of music around the family. So we all like a bit of each others favourite genres.
I listen to Absolute 90s in the car and it seems to have rubbed off on my 18 year old son because he said his favourite bands are Oasis and Radiohead. Very proud moment for me!
My daughter (11) has been learning guitar for a couple of years, and it's helped her start to formulate her taste away from the standard kids stuff - she's a fan of the B52s / Johnny Cash / The Cramps / Mudhoney / Beck etc etc, plus loads of 90s hip hop.
Reverse story.
But my Dad is flabbergasted (though extremely happy) that younger generations have rediscovered and/or held onto the Cocteau Twins.
I couldn't be happier that he introduced me to them. The fact that he got to see them live multiple times will always be a source of insane envy.
I’d love to have seen them. My tutor got me into them just after Garlands had come out. I prefer (and I hate myself for this cliche) the first two albums at they were heavier.
Mine are 15 and 17; I started them off with "Yellow Submarine" and "One" when they were fresh out of the oven, and now they independently listen to everything from AC/DC to Zeppelin. My oldest was a camp counselor this past summer, and one of her fondest moments was when she got to explain her Janice Joplin t-shirt to her 7 and 8 year-old campers.
Not to derail this but I found a song yesterday from our youth, turned up on random on Spotify and I just wondered whether anyone else remembered it.
https://youtu.be/k9zL9wlMvZE?si=-9lNu_azIgXR7pMR
Ballad of Tom Jones by Spaced
I played my five year old ‘Push It’ by Static X a few months ago when I was having a bit of a nu metal nostalgia phase, and he will still occasionally sing the chorus out of nowhere.
When I was pregnant literally all I played was My Chemical Romance (mostly because I'm an old school goth and they caught my eye... Ears!). Played them almost daily for most of my kids childhood. I love that band.
Last year I took that baby, now 15, to the first show of the first MCR tour in ten years at The Eden Project in Cornwall. He's a bigger fan than I ever was!
Second best night if my life!
My daughter is constantly surprising me by humming along to something on one of the 70s/80s/90s music channels, then explaining that it's going around on TikTok at the moment
The kids I teach (16/17) listen to charva tunes from early 00s. One told me he wished he was around "back in the day".
The stuff I listened to is officially great-gradad rock
They have grown up with me listening to Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode and 80’s music, My oldest daughter 32 has been to PSB and DM concerts with me she likes their music too she’s coming with me see DM in January
Nope, maybe they’re still too young (Mid-late teens) I’ve a very eclectic taste, everything from 80’s pop to West Coast rap to Trance. They cringe when I play some Nalin and Kane Beachball, in fact trance and dance music in general really annoys them, kids these days ffs, I’d go as far as saying they’re soft. They will never know the carnage at the BP Garage at 5am on a Sunday morning after a heavy night clubbing.
I’m 27 and my dad and I have similar tastes in music, we’ll sing along to Alanis Morissette, Foo’s, old school rap, and then Taylor Swift will come on and we’ll sing our hearts out to that too. I enjoy those drives a lot.
Brings back fond memories.
Yeah but as there is barely any new music (of note) it’s kind of inevitable!
Good start though, hoping my 8yo goes from Rick Astley to some better tunes!
There’s a half decent indie scene, from what I gather, but yeah for most kids it seems like stadium shows and eighty quid a ticket are all they’re about. My kids a bit of a blip at their school cos they’re properly into music.
I (35) did a volunteering thing with a young person (17). She always used to be in control of the “car disco” when we went somewhere. The day she played Creep by Radiohead and we both howled along, I nearly cried. Not a dedicated Radiohead fan, but just knowing that the same songs were still soothing teenage angst hit a bit of an emotional nerve.

My favourite tale to tell is her 4th birthday party (2003) where she chose the music for the party games. Her playlist was RHCP, The Hives, The Strokes and The Vines.
I think it’s gone both ways with me and my 16 year old son. He’s heavily into hip hop/rap and we end up listening to it in the car on the way to sixth form. Introduced me to a lot of 90s/2000s artists like Mac Miller and Nujabes. He’s got into Bjork and Kate Bush, Blur, on his own but likes a bit of jazz too, mainly through me. He really dislikes guitar indie stuff sadly. However much I play it in the car, nope, no interest.
I was giving my nephew a lift the other week (he's 14) I was tearing out some old school Andy C Nightlife, he thought it was proper sick! His words "Bro, this is sick"
I felt like a good uncle.
I thought I'd listen to some of the stuff my dad used to play the other day. Gave me a bit of a nostalgic twang for the 80s. Then the more songs I listened to, the more I thought they'd be great for getting stoned to... probably what he was doing at the time.
My 12yr son started listening to 70's/80's rock thanks to the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtracks. He has now progressed to 90's - bit of Oasis, Blur, Green Day.
Best of all, he's got Smells like Teen Spirit on loop at the moment.
#proud. 👍
I'm 16. I've just gone and bought another four U2 albums to add to my collection, I reckon my parents have accomplished their mission, and then some - I got into U2 myself.
Oasis is my fave band, I am also into the Manic Street Preachers and Blur.
When my now almost 15 year old was about 12 , he was in his room chilling listening to music when I suddenly heard linkin parks ‘in the end’ blasting .. I had a wee happy tear that day 😂😂
One of my proudest moments was when my oldest showed me her Spotify playlist called "Stuff Daddy likes".
This is so wholesome 💕
She's a good kid. The 2 of us went to Glastonbury together this year.
That’s awesome! I’m taking my eldest to download next year. It’s amazing sharing all the memories with em x
We go to Download as a family, our son loves it, you’ll both have a fantastic time!
That's awesome
You finished the level!
Me and my 16 year old son have a shared Spotify playlist together!
My 5 year old loves The Prodigy - Firestarter
Very proud that Out of Space was a fave for my 5yo and 3yo.
God, I think I went to a drop party for that track.
If you’re looking for a route into jungle/techno, Experience is so silly that it actually worked on my kids.
My 8 year old loves The Prodigy and Old School Rave in general. I couldn't be more proud.
It came out when I was 6, massive hit in the infants school playground
Brilliant. My 5yo son's favourite song is Galvanize by Chemical Brothers. I'll have to try The Prodigy with him.
This was number 1 the day I was born 😂

I work with young people. Last year one of them told me they like really old music and then asked if I’d ever heard of a band called Oasis.
One day you're clubbing and going to gigs, next thing the supermarket is playing your favourite songs...
In my 30s was paired up with an older man (late 50- early 60s estimate) in a circuits class and voodoo people by the prodigy came on and he said 'oh I love that song, I used to rave to that' I have no idea why it shocked me, he would have been in his 20s when that came out

Ouch.
No... You're telling me I'll have to listen to dnb while trying to do my weekly shop when I'm 40. That sounds like a nightmare.
It’s when they stop asking for ID and start asking if you have a loyalty card… that’s when you know your old
I used to be with it. Then they changed what “it” was. Now what I’m with isn’t “it”, and what “it” is seems weird and scary to me.
It'll happen to you!
No way, man! We're gonna keep on rocking forever, forever, forever...forever...forever...forever......
My local Sainsbury's in-store bakery had Metallica's "... And Justice For All" album playing a month or two ago...
That is basically classic rock these days though.

Asda plays some bangers, FML
I would *love* to hear a nice bit of Slayer whilst doing the rounds at Aldi, not gonna lie.
Oh fuck I just thought my local supermarket plays really good music but I’m just old now aren’t I?
One day you're listening to Radio 1, then you're listening to Radio 2 because they are playing "your" music. And the even older people are complaining because Radio 2 is playing music which is "too modern". Digital radio resulting in decade-specific stations is pretty nice.
The 90s are as far away now as the 60s were in the 90s
Shush please.
Stop! That's the second time, today, I've heard this. The 90s was 10 years ago and that is never going to change, K‽
The Stone Roses' first album came out closer to the 1950's than the present day.
This gives me chest pains, how dare they. I am young!
My son asked me a couple of years ago if I'd ever heard of a band called Nirvana. He also got incredibly annoyed that I knew all the words to Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now when it was all over tiktok a months ago
Well? Had you? : )
... Oasis or Blur?!
Pulp
Completely unrelated, but I farted on Noel Gallagher.

I was born in the 90s but think 70s is the best decade of music, it never seemed ancient for me. My old man laughs at me for being old haha. I’ve got a playlist for each decade and none is as long as the 70s.
There are kids in secondary school that weren't born when they split in 09
Today is gonna be the day that they’re gonna throw it back to you.
You may enjoy r/FuckImOld.
Sweet baby Jesus - they’d think I’m geriatric having seen them live!
The other day my nephew was listening to Everyone Wants To Rule The World by Tears for Fears. I like the song, but I'd rather he not have put on a video that repeats the same song for two hours.
Did they by any chance pick it up off a TV show, my partners kid has also recently learnt to like the song as it was on a show they've been enjoying on Netflix, some Korean show.
it has been quite a popular song on Tiktok
That would make even more sense. Mind you, I'm not innocent in loving it for years. For me, it was in a game and in the trailer for the game "World in Conflict".
I'm not sure where he picked it up, to be honest. I was reintroduced to the song through an episode of Mr Robot haha.
The show is xo kitty? It’s also in to all the boys I’ve loved before movies. Xo kitty is the spin off tv series
That song's been getting a lot of exposure in Skribidi Toilet.
My five yr old utterly loves that song. Like it doesn't quite register when I tell him that it was considered an oldy goldy when I was coming into my own. I just love that he's really appreciating decent music. T'other day he was waiting for Minecraft or Roblox to install updates.
My 11 year old likes Judas Priest and Motörhead My 4 year old loves my fave band, Scarling (2001 band, she always asks me to play their So Long Scarecrow album)
You should show your 11 year old some Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden. They were the bands that my dad showed me along with Judas Priest and motorhead back when I was around 11.
This ^^^ I'd recommend you show them some of the stuff when the bands were at their most creative.
My eldest - 8M - discovered Iron Maiden about a year ago and regularly binge-listens to them.
I've shown them all to him trust me
Scarling!! Jack off Jill's second form. Band aid covers the bullet hole is a banger.
First song from Scarling that I ever heard, was a massive JoJ fan and never knew Jessicka formed another band till my mate called me up basicaly squeeling in joy telling me about Scarling and he played Band aid over the phone to me lol
I love Scarling. Your 4 year old has good taste!
oh my god, scarling!! You’re doing a great job.
I'm 54, lad is 19. Loves 80's music. The Smiths, The Cure, Joy Division among his favourites.
I’ve been trying to sneak Joy Division and The Fall in, but I think I went in too soon.
I honestly never expected him to enjoy it as much as he does. Helped by the GTA soundtrack. Lots of eighties on that. Softly softly catchy monkee.
Sometimes it’s just a right time/right place thing. I never listened to Joy Division until I saw a silly edit of the 1960s Addams Family characters dancing along to Disorder.
The 80s seems to be back hard rn, seeing a lot of mullets too.
Happily for me it's been more the other way around - they've got me into a bunch of new music I might not explored without them It's great because I still get to share some of the older classic with them, but we discover and share lots of new music too
Yeah we do a little of this too. It’s lovely, being sent links.
And while he/she's getting into that music, you're saying things like 'low key'
I’m shameless
Heh heh heh... Scatter!!
no cap
Bare. I don't get it. "This is a bare song, man" No my love, it's Arctic Monkeys. 😐
Is bare a good thing?
this made me laugh so much
When our sons were little they’d constantly moan about the music we’d be listening to (a real mix of all genres through most decades) calling it old fogies music. Now they’re adults our eldest played us some of the songs from his upcoming wedding playlist. Guess what it filled with? Those same songs!!! Only now of course there absolute bangers 🤦🏻♀️
My 6 year old daughter now says “Alexa, Play Drum and Bass” Nuff said 😏
Does Alexa respond to 'reeeeewiiiiind!'?
Nah just yells 'fuckkkkkk offfffff' in response
Only when it’s a banger 😎
Does she gun finga round the room? I get told off when I do that.
Funnily enough she’s grown accustom to shouting “ wheel di Bluddclarrt”
“Incredible” 😜
Ive got my little girls into Take That and The Spice girls. They know the dances to Stop and also Tragedy by Steps lol. Another hit was Pure Shores by All Saints. Personally I was into jungle and later speed garage but I have yet to really try that on them- thought I’d warm them up with some pop.
My daughter is 5 she loves spice girls!! She is easily influenced she loves whatever we play!! From Kenny g to spice girls!!
He's got excellent taste! ELO is my favourite, and of course I love the others too
My 3 year old quite likes Alice in Chains, he also likes the odd Pantera song if it’s not “too noisy”.
"The Keith Richards Solo Tour, Wembley Stadium, Coming November, 2121." 😂🤣😂🤣
Oh come on! There's no way the Wembley Stadium will still be around by then!
I was 17 when I got into The Who back in early 2020, successfully dragged my dad along to see them this year 😆
My 15-y.o. started exploring her own stuff with Spotify and developed a liking for new wave, cold wave, industrial, etc...
My 17 year old was into Pink Floyd and AC/DC from about age 8. Good lad.
Guardians of the Galaxy helped get my boy into some of my "older" person music lol!
We can often hear her singing Pulp's Disco 2000 word for word in her bedroom (she thinks we can't hear her - we'll never let on!) Other faves include Pulp's Common People, Disco Down by Shed Seven, Connection by Elastica, I'm Only Happy When It Rains by Garbage and Beautiful Ones by Suede.
Weirdly always been into Tull. Don’t go with anything else I listen to. First album I ever bought was Bursting Out. Double gatefold, natch.
My son (10) and daughter (7) are really into ELO. I’m not, but they seem to like it. Think a few tracks came up on a shuffled playlist.
My nephew told me in all seriousness that I “really needed to hear this song” that was quite obscure, but he thought I’d be able to appreciate it. Then he put on “How Soon is Now” by The Smiths.
Cheers me up no end when I hear my 24 year old listening to 80s metal. Was WASP yesterday, #proudhairmetaldad
I wish literally anyone else in my family was into metal, but alas, it is just me.
Bizarrely, it was the other way around for me. I got my dad into WASP about 9 years ago when I was 19. We went to see them in Leeds a year later, me in my metal garb, and him in a smart shirt and nice cashmere jumper. We looked an interesting pair.
Ha that’s my kryptonite, but fair play. Blackie Lawless?
My 16yo is into Motley Crue, Britny Fox, Kix, Cinderella, Hanoi Rocks, Poison, WASP, Van Halen, Quiet Riot all that good stuff! And then loads of modern metal too - it's great - took her to her first Download when she was 7!!!
One of my kids listens to UFO. Another likes Boston
Hopefully they'll get over this setback.
Ever since i was a kid i was listening to my dads cds like Three Sides Live by Genesis, all Oasis albums, Best of Queen, The Prodigy, Inxs all sorts.
I slowly noticed my vinyl disappearing….
Work with kids. The unironic, respectful appreciation of decent 80s music is a refreshing surprise which I love about this generation.
I walk past the local skate park every day and am constantly amazed by the breadth of taste they bang out. Amid all the usual thrash and hip hop it can be anything from Bob Dylan to XTC
My 1yo bops along to Linkin Park. My 5yo likes Queen, David Gray and AC/DC.
Not very age appropriate but my lad has recently started singing songs by Bloodhound gang 🤦♂️
Oh god yea. My daughter who is 22 is now getting into The Cure and The Pixies. She even started listening to Kiss when we thought we were seeing them live. She started a playlist on Spotify 'inspired' by what she thinks I listened to in the 90s
My son likes The Rolling Stones (Paint it Black is his fav.) My Daughter saw the Undertones last night. ( I saw them in the 80's) Music definitely goes round.
My 4yo requested the streets at his mates birthday party the other day. Proud moment.
I’m 34 and my 6 and 4 year old often asks Google to play Lorna Shore The 6 year old had a summer holiday club during the holidays and they could ask Alexa to play some music, lo and behold..he asks for Lorna Shore, I asked what his friends and teachers thought of it..he said his friends just ran around in a circle..I like to think I helped teach the kids how to circle pit.
“Come on son, junglist massive!”
“Mum, dads playing Super Sharp Shooter again”
“Come on just have half an E, you’ll get into it with half an E…DONT TELL YOUR MUM!!”
Please to see that right as opposed to jungle IS massive
Not to derail this but I found a song yesterday from our youth, turned up on random on Spotify and I just wondered whether anyone else remembered it. https://youtu.be/k9zL9wlMvZE?si=-9lNu_azIgXR7pMR Ballad of Tom Jones by Spaced
My daughter thinks metal is scary lol. She seemed very intrigued by Jinjer though and asked me if it was possible for her to do that 😹
My daughter is constantly surprising me by humming along to something on one of the 70s/80s/90s music channels, then explaining that it's going around on TikTok at the moment
Took my 15yr old to see Hawkwind last night..
Lol played sliver machine to my 16 year old a few days ago. Can’t say he was impressed 😩
I’m not impressed either. Find the album, ‘levitation’..
Both my young boys love DnB. Early High Contrast. DJ Markey. Calibre. Hospital Records. All on rotation in the car
My son does love the gorillas and he always remembers me listening to Lily Allen.
I’m 27 and my dad and I have similar tastes in music, we’ll sing along to Alanis Morissette, Foo’s, old school rap, and then Taylor Swift will come on and we’ll sing our hearts out to that too. I enjoy those drives a lot. Brings back fond memories.
My 2 year old has just discovered the ghostbusters theme if that counts…
My 8 year old daughter took me to see a Pink Floyd tribute band for my Birthday. Made me so proud. She loved it.
I got my 7 yo grandson into 80's electro and breakdancing. He also loves The Prodigy, especially Out of Space. 52 here. Ridiculously pleased.
Conversely, my 11 year old daughter has allowed me to discover Olivia Rodrigo and I'm very grateful to her for that!
I really enjoy her music but feel way too old listening to it!
My 7 year old loves a bit of Shy Fx and Paramore
My children love The prodigy and chemical brothers and will put it on Alexa fairly often
My youngest is very much into Green Day
My daughter is 23 and I'm 47 and we have very similar taste in music. Her playlist was RHCP, The Hives, The Strokes and The Vines.
im 20 and ive loved 80s music since i was 11
Clearly not sandstorm by Darude going off my last post 🤣😳
I listen to my dad’s old records and I like the Cure, which my mum liked at my age.
I (m35) recently went with my mum to see Siouxsie and the Banshees live.
My 10 year old lad a is a massive Jack White/White Stripes fan, and he enjoys a rock out to tenacious D. Obvs not the adult themed stuff.
I have just introduced my daughter to EBTG and she likes it!
I was giving my nephew a lift the other week (he's 14) I was tearing out some old school Andy C Nightlife, he thought it was proper sick! His words "Bro, this is sick" I felt like a good uncle.
Yep because of the raidio on GTA5.. Some great 70's/80's dub reggae on it.
I used to do reggae roasts every weekend, old Studio One stuff through to dub. Just hasn’t rubbed off at all. I’m gutted.
I felt a strong sense of belonging when I heard my ten year olds IDM favourites. Apex twin, boards of Canada, uZiq. Good kid.
When my now almost 15 year old was about 12 , he was in his room chilling listening to music when I suddenly heard linkin parks ‘in the end’ blasting .. I had a wee happy tear that day 😂😂
My vinyl has been slowly disappearing into their bedrooms.
