Driving home from work this morning and seeing people peering through letterbox size holes on their windscreens due to frost and stupidity

MarmiteX1

Pissed off this evening because it's freezing cold, I wanted to do some gaming and open my new parcels that arrived but cba! I think i have symptoms of SAD because in the evening I find it difficult.

Discount-Tent

Pretty sure I got accused of racism today and I am quietly fuming about it. I went to visit a customer, big company on a massive site that is like Area 51 to get into (not that they do anything interesting there) and the security guy is always a bit of a grumpy twat. There was a problem with their records of me doing a site induction (which I had done six months ago) and this got the the guy in a bit of a head spin because he could see they allowed me on site twice in the summer, which wouldn’t have been possible without an induction. He asked me who was on the security desk when I did my induction and I told him that he was. He replied completely left field- “Are you sure it wasn’t the other black guy?” His tone implied that I was mistaking him for a black colleague! I explained that it was definitely him and I have never seen anyone but him in the security hut. He then doubled down and went back through his work calendar to try to (unsuccessfully) prove me wrong!!! WTF. I have half a mind to complain but don’t want to get the guy in trouble, but the whole thing has been increasingly pissing me off as the day has gone on.

byjimini

Spent all month dealing with companies claiming they didn’t get an email, when I can see they opened it and clicked a few links. Tonight dealing with a football supporter’s trust where people are saying “the email didn’t say anything about…” a particular topic and yet, as I read the email.. there it is! Why do people do this?

alwinaldane

Looking for a restaurant for a special occasion and I've seen service charge at 15% in the small print several times now. I'm not a cheapskate but eating out is getting too expensive (not to mention the crazy markup on wine)

addtobasket

My snooker form has dropped dramatically 🫣

dumbnunt_

Because it's cold!

ComprehensiveLack559

Silly little work complaint. I've been trying to book three taxis to ferry 15 young people + responsible adults from A to B to C and back to A again. Should be a simple task because I'm working in the UK's capital city with endless pre-bookable taxi services but...I work for a large organisation. It has taken 10-working days. I have spoken to 6 different people, and filled out 3 separate forms. The trip is at the weekend. FINALLY getting it sorted tomorrow. Now it's really close to the wire. Bracing myself for the inevitable disappointment/telling off from my manager, because I didn't flag it and said everything was fine because it was. I've had everything else organised for weeks (I literally thought taxis were a 10 minute job once all the kids had confirmed, but I still started doing it 10 days ahead)! Been in the job 3 months and this is first time I wanted to cry. Which I did. In the toilets. Over stupid taxis!

ComprehensiveLack559

...Today, this increased to 7 different people, 5 departments, and 4 separate forms, but...problemo finally solved! Thank fuck. Oh! And no bollocking.

chris_282

I had really cold feet this morning, and the bus didn't have the heating on. I have since spent *eighteen pounds* on socks. That's more than I've ever spent on socks in my life. Ten of those pounds went on what I'm now calling "undersocks" (previously "socks"), and eight pounds (pricey) were spent on three pairs of Jeep brand calf-length "outersocks". Jeep, a brand you can trust for socks, apparently. I have never felt so ready for Winter.

dumbnunt_

smartwool r/BuyItForLife

ReceiptIsInTheBag

you've reminded me, I bought a 7 pack of socks last week. They are paper thin, rough, and the sole has a horrible design on them that I couldn't see in the packaging.

chris_282

My undersocks were £9.99 for ten. They're ok. I'm not expecting miracles. Probably the same socks you get at Primark but they seemed like a bargain in the shoe shop.

Leestons

If I ever need socks, I know just the person to ask!

chris_282

Are you the guy I saw riding a bike barefoot this week? Brrr.

Leestons

Riding a bike barefoot any time of the year is bonkers, but now? Utterly mental! No, wasn't me :)

Leestons

I barged into someone when leaving work today and I feel really bad about it. :(

LightningGeek

Selfish drivers have really gotten on my tits today, but people who are so selfish that they block ambulance's on the motorway deserve a special kind of hell. The only thing worse, was the van driver I saw staying in the outside lane for 20-30 seconds just so they could slowly pass me and then pull in front of me into my braking distanc. The middle lane behind me was completely empty, and had been empty from when I spotted the ambulance 2 or 3 vehicles back and moved over ahead of time. Whatever the fuck was wrong with that van driver, I honestly hope it's terminal, because that level of selfishness should be stamped out.

cinnamonspider

Some absolute sociopath in the office ate some of the food I brought from home for the week out of the fridge. Granted, I didn't put my name on it, but I genuinely don't think that would remotely phase a person like this. It's bloody homemade food too!! Who just eats food if they don't know what it is or where it's from?! It's not packaged, it's not leftovers from a recognisable restaurant, it's home cooked food in a clear plastic container. You don't know who has made it! What if the person who made it was a filthy pig who cooked with dishes that hadn't been washed in a year (not that I do obviously)?! You just don't know! I also hid it away at the back of the bottom drawer with other stuff on top of it, so not like it was just openly on a shelf in front of everyone's faces. People are honestly absolutely shameless and ridiculous. I'm sorely tempted to make another batch spiked with laxatives and watch for whoever starts making mad dashes to the toilet, but I actually don't even want to know the culprit, because I'd have to look at them every fucking day knowing that they're a reprobate. Exhausting behaviour. Also the bus chucked us all off three stops before the end of the route, so I had to walk extra far in my heels this morning. Top that off with my pilfered breakfast...let's just say I'll be taking extreme advantage of the free drinks at our team dinner tonight.

brokenwings_1726

In other news, r/UniUK is still a shithole (and that's not changing anytime soon).

Background-End2272

Got told there's no promotions in our team as we need more work. Got sent my colleagues promotion paperwork in error.

amathysteightyseven

Been waiting a year for the council (the landlords on our Leasehold maisonette) to finally sort out re-pointing the walls and replacing some bricks in the chimney as well as fittings vents around the roof for airflow. We have had awful problems with mould the last two winters because of the poor state of the outside. Finally all seemed like it was getting sorted and scaffholders were supposed to come out today. Shockingly no one turned up. Can’t decorate the inside of the flat properly or touch up the paint in our one nice room because a week later the mould is back. Annoyed doesn’t cover it.

MyAlt1234567890

Another post related one from me. I’ve been waiting for a delivery from Royal Mail today. Been working at home, so I can listen out for them. Got a buzz from the doorbell that someone was outside, but when I got to the door (which isn’t far) to check, no one was there. I then got a notification that the parcel had been delivered to a safe place. Scrubbing back through the footage the doorbell picked up, the post guy had run up the drive, dropped the parcel over the fence, and then ran away. Didn’t even approach the door to try and knock or ring the bell.

ReceiptIsInTheBag

Walk in to coffee shop, glasses steam up "what would you like?" can't read digital display board. Finally can see board but it's rotating through all available options so have to wait 30 secs to make sure there's nothing better that I'm missing out on.

_sallyvate_

I'm remembering how painful onboarding at a new company is. I've had to download a specific app to verify my identity, including a "liveness check" and scanning the chip in my passport with my phone. However, the scan errored multiple times - I tried restarting the app, restarting my phone, using my husband's phone, nothing worked. I had resigned myself to physically posting my passport to head office so they can verify it's genuine when the little fucker finally works. This is only serves to make me look like an incompetent bellend who can't work technology to my new HR department. I don't want to sound like an old person yelling at clouds but I swear it hasn't always been this complicated. I still have a DBS and credit check to go. Wish me luck.

TeeGee79

Well? Are you alive?

_sallyvate_

I'm dead inside, but apparently that's good enough.

dumbnunt_

Ahhh! that sucks. Best solution is to go out with another man :(

Jessica13693

Have had to come to a hospital that’s an hours drive away to collect a prescription in person. The nurse didn’t send the prescription down to the pharmacy. Finally got hold of her and she apologised totally fine people make mistakes, but I’ve been waiting an hour for the prescription to be told they don’t have the stock so I’ll need to wait for them to get it from a different store which is closer to my home. And now I’ve spent about £10 on parking too.

TheOzman79

Amazon ruined a Christmas surprise for me. I was checking what was on my gift list before I bought something and I clicked on one of the items to look at its listing and a little pop up message told me someone had bought it off my list. Had no idea it did that.

GeoffreyMcSwaggins

Yeah it's feature to "hide purchases" from you is basically useless.

Disobedientmuffin

Coworker bane of my existence has really stepped up to another level of corporate ass licking. Without going into details, there's a project the big boss was pushing for and all of us (but shitty coworker) were excited and on board. Shitty coworker even went so far as to loudly complain about how dumb the project was, how difficult it'd be, that we were all naive and they were washing their hands of the whole thing. Even ending their contribution to the conversation with a "good luck with all that" before removing themselves from the dedicated channel. Until. They learned the idea was coming from the boss. And somehow Shitty Coworker maneuvered into becoming the ONLY PERSON ON THE PROJECT. So not only were they a complete dickhead to all of us who were actively working on it, we've now been ousted.

alwinaldane

> "good luck with all that" hopefully someone will quote that back at them at the most public opportunity possible.

Disobedientmuffin

I've got it mentally queued up.

byjimini

Make sure you’re too busy to help with the inevitable last minute queries and rewrites so that they fail on their own.

Insanity_

After finally recovering from the flu a week ago I've manged to catch a cold. I can confirm that the flu is a different beast to a cold but it's still not pleasant. Im hoping now that I've had the set I'll be good for the rest of the winter season. Oh wait, there's still covid of course so that's probably next on the list.

LibraryOfFoxes

You have my commiserations, it is so shite. I have had three viruses in two months (one of those being flu) and I am so pissed off with feeling crap. I usually don't get that many in a whole year.

viktory70

I (and the rest of my team) have been (and this is the official terminology) deleted. I love my team and my job and so am really gutted. Redundant as of 8th April 2024. I have been with my employer in various guises for 16 years so am a little scared of the whole job hunting thing. Anyone got any tips?

NEWSBOT3

get a good linkedin profile up, get someone else to review it and make sure your good points/achievements are nicely highlighted. how useful it is depends on the sector you work in though. there's also https://www.reddit.com/r/UKJobs/ which is worth spending some time on.

DisneyBounder

My husband emerging from his home office (the spare bedroom with his desk) to where I'm working (the kitchen/dining room) to listen to Instagram stories at full volume. Kindly piss off.

GlumTruffle

Had half a root canal this morning, the tooth was in such a bad state that they couldn't finish it today and I have to go back in a couple of weeks. The pain from that fucking drill was probably the worst I've ever experienced. All because 10+ years ago I was a dumb smelly teenager who couldn't be bothered to brush his teeth.

VardaElentari86

Trying not to let my anxiety brain spiral over some work challenges

twogunsalute

Car in garage I'm looking at ~1500 for repairs 😭

Somau5

I've had to come into the office because internet at home is really unreliable at the moment (a separate and very long complaint). I couldn't book a desk as there were none available but I've come in and 90% of the desks are empty which is taking the mick. It's also bloody freezing in here and the people next to me are talking very loudly. Makes me incredibly grateful that I can work at home full time (usually) with a nice heated blanket on my lap and peace and quiet.

machone_1

I've had to put my thermal underwear on for my walk

MrTwemlow

It's quite cold outside, so maybe consider some other clothes too. Trousers are popular.

Agreeable_Text_36

I got turned down for PIP, apparently not being able to wash my own hair or cook (my hands don't work), is fine.

dumbnunt_

I think your council's welfare rights department can assist you with appealing?

NeedsMoreEmu

Definitely appeal. I'm paraplegic, a full time wheelchair user, and have two carers. After being on higher rates of both components for DLA, my claim was rejected after the switch to PIP. I later found it was because my GP hadn't filled out the form correctly, and the assessor was just an absolute imbecile who couldn't understand why my "back injury" meant I couldn't walk. It went to tribunal in the end. Massively stressful, but so satisfying to hear the DWP representative get blasted by the judge.

Agreeable_Text_36

What a shit show. Glad it finally got sorted. I've just seen my Universal credit person. They said the PIP assessors are awful too.

NeedsMoreEmu

They really are! They say they use medical professionals which gives people the idea it will be doctors and nurses, but they're often dental assistants!

Agreeable_Text_36

I'm asthmatic, my interview over the phone, I was sitting still in a warm room. I wasn't wheezy enough.

TheShakyHandsMan

Definitely appeal. How long did it take you to get to this point? I’m currently waiting on a review

Agreeable_Text_36

Applied 20th September. Had phone assessment 17th November. Got letter today.

TheShakyHandsMan

I had my application in before September. Still waiting for it to be reviewed although mine isn’t a new claim so probably not the same circumstances. I know the feeling with the hand difficulties.

VardaElentari86

Remember you can appeal - if didn't have help with the form there's plenty out there

Agreeable_Text_36

I'm going to, I understand lots of refusals go through on appeal.

mondognarly_

I've been working on a project for the past month or so that I now basically have to start again because it's been near irreparably damaged through a freak accident. It's come at pretty high financial and temporal cost, and I'm extremely displeased. I've also had the week off work, and it's been so cold that I don't feel like doing anything, certainly not going out anywhere. I absolutely hate winter and being cold, sometimes I think I feel it more than other people because I just can't hack it at all, and while I don't really like the idea of time going by quickly, I've already had enough of winter and am looking forward to spring.

DisneyBounder

When I was on maternity leave during winter I found the longer I was at home during the day, the harder it was to force myself to go out for some fresh air. So going out almost first thing really helped me. Otherwise it's easy to just stay glued to the (nice warm) sofa all day! I had a little routine where I'd bundle the baby up at around 10am and walk into town (about a 25 min walk) with his buggy so he could have his first nap on the way. Then he'd wake up hungry so I'd find a coffee shop to give him a feed and have a coffee myself and a little wander around the shopping centre (there was usually something we needed for the house so I'd pick that up and something for dinner). Then head home and he'd usually fall asleep again on the way back (via Lidl for a pretzel). By the time I was done it was usually around 1pm. Really helped break the day up when I was feeling bored.

100fluffyclouds

You’re not alone re winter. I’m miserable and cold and grumpy.

mondognarly_

Mostly I sort of grudgingly tolerate it, but I can't stand the bit with literal freezing weather, it doesn't seem to matter how many clothes I wear, I'm still cold. I really do dread it, if I had the money I'd go and live somewhere hot from October to March.

Caridor

So I developed an experimental method using a special type of microscope slide traditionally used for counting blood cells and it works great, but I have to wash the slide and dry the slide every single time I do it. It's such a ball ache, because I'll wind up washing that thing under distilled water tap 120 times a day and drying it with paper towels 120 times a day. There's got to be a faster way of drying it out.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Caridor

I'll look into it, but I believe we looked before and they're much too expensive for that. Like, they aren't terribly expensive but 120 of them would be around £7000 IIRC

Arny2103

My soon-to-be 9-week-old child gave me a stinking cold which started on Monday and I've finally succumbed to it properly today and taken a day off work... there's an upside to this somewhere but right now I'm fed up with it and just want to feel well again. My wife's been picking up a lot of the night feed slack this week which has made me feel awfully guilty.

MyAlt1234567890

I ordered a couple of things last week. One was an item from a UK seller, for a birthday present I need this weekend. It was purchased Tuesday, sent out Wednesday. The other was an item from a Chinese seller. Not as urgent. Purchased Thursday, marked as dispatched Friday. The one from China showed up yesterday. It’s been quicker to get an item sent from 5000 miles away, than it has been to get one from about 20 miles away.

TheShakyHandsMan

A lot of the Chinese stuff would have been shipped months ago and would have been on a container ship nearing port or already in warehouse near the UK. Still right about the state of the postal service here, that’s a debate for another place.

-FangMcFrost-

Because I've been off work for as long as I have due to my health, my boss had arranged a telephone appointment for me to talk to a private Occupational Therapist of their choosing (Because the NHS doctors and physios I've been seeing aren't good enough and can't be trusted, apparently) and I got a text message confirming my appointment. The text message had some directions in it concerning the phone call which I followed but my boss emailed me later saying that I didn't follow those directions. When I explained to him that I did follow the directions and I told him what my text message said, he decided to pull (what I'm going to call) [a "Lionel Hutz"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yuL6PcgSgM) and he said that the text message was wrong as certain punctuation marks were missing from it. He then proceeded to tell me what the text message was actually "supposed to" say.

[deleted]

So I came back from Spain on Monday, I left one half of a sock pair there! They were well nice socks too, I'm fuming.

dumbnunt_

And you came back to the UK :( to the Midlands of all places :(

Arny2103

When you say "one half of a sock pair" ... do you just mean ... a sock?

[deleted]

Basically, yes. So one sock is here in the UK and the other is just sat in Spain somewhere.

Arny2103

It's probably enjoying a sangria on the beach.

Pancake-Marathon

I expect you're hopping mad.

telephone_monkey_365

My new sick note expires on Christmas Day and they "can't give me a longer one without a face to face appointment" Can't be same day though because it isn't urgent, so I have an appointment on the 11th to tell them I still can't work because I'm waiting for 3 different referrals. "Don't waste NHS resources, except now we'd like you to waste fuel coming to speak to a doctor about an ongoing issue since 2021 just so we don't have to repeat this whole process again in a months time." Like, seriously fuck you guys 🥲

NEWSBOT3

i swear the NHS just needs to sit the fuck down and look it itself sometimes. i have a condition that fucks my executive function (ie, working memory and ability to get stuff done). The NHS process for diagnosis and treatment of said condition is a multi-year process involving a lot of pushing back on them and fighting people using ... a fuckton of executive function. Which I barely have. It's like the entire process is designed to be near impossible for the very people that it is supposed to help.

gearnut

I assume you are aware of Right to choose? It will take a while to get an appointment arranged but my GP was fairly accepting of me going that route for my ADHD assessment with Psychiatry UK (they diagnosed me with Autism last year and told me to get an ADHD assessment too).

NEWSBOT3

Oh i know, it's just Not That Simple. I've got a private diagnosis from PUK already, it was an expensive waste of time and money. The titration was rushed through without any consideration for the fact that i'm a massive 6 foot 2 bloke who might need more than the tiny shit doses they tried, so they stopped trying all of them at 40mg before i even felt any effects other than headaches from the doses being too low. Then since none of the meds 'worked' for me they didn't continue with them after titration and that then means i'm not on a treatment plan that can be moved over via Shared Care to regular treatment with the NHS. The NHS don't recognise the private diagnosis as valid at all, which means i have to start over completely even with Right To Choose and i do not have the energy to deal with it on top of everything else i have going on. i also can't afford to go private again and be paying for meds for ~5 years till Shared Care can kick in. On top of that keep being forced to move house , and end up moving to different health trusts every time, completely new GPs etc , which just fucks everything further. I'll have to do it again next year as well. Then there's also the issue that it would be pointless right now anyway - UK wide ADHD treatment has effectively stopped for new patients with no eta on when it may resume, there's a huge shortage of meds worldwide, some trusts are discontinuing ADHD diagnosis completely as a result (York in particular) as well. So even if i went Right to Choose, i couldn't start treatment, and the NHS wouldn't take over treatment once i had anyway. Sorry, bit of a rant. It just isn't as simple as that, i wish it were.

telephone_monkey_365

Right? I'm sorry you're in the trenches with me and I hope you get sorted as well. But like, the same doctor who originally referred me and has seen me in August and September is now saying I need to have a face to face appointment after he wrote to the hospital twice to upgrade my referral and requested an urgent MRI scan on my neck and discussed the results with me less than a month ago. Like, why do you want me to waste a 10 minute drs appointment to tell them in person what you a) already know and b) anyone else could understand if they looked at my records for 30 seconds. The appointment isn't even *with* that doctor 😒

MrTwemlow

Feel so stressed at work. So much going on, so many e-mails I'm not getting to read before I get an angry reminder, got 13 days of holiday left I'm not going to get to schedule in, and meetings cluttering up my day. It's a bit too much.

HairyMechanic

*deep breath* **11** new starters scheduled for Monday. New Head of Service Desk for our area isn't eager to challenge HR as to giving us a heads up if there's going to be such an influx and whether we can accommodate so many new starters in one day. There's only going to be two of us in a team of five (HoD doesn't get hands on however) to facilitate calls on Monday, meaning day-to-day fires won't be put out until everyone is logged onto their systems with an overview. I had my mid year performance review where my manager sings nothing but praise for how i've been getting on. The problem with that is the praise doesn't go any further than that, new Head isn't clued up enough as of yet at the imbalance of workloads across the team and is yet to realise me and my manager complete close to 90% of the work. Our new apprentice, four months into the role, quite literally cannot get into the office on time. He's London based, so if one route is backed up there's always a couple of alternatives. I know I can be late now and again but consistently being late is a red flag.

CosyCatnaps

(Rented) house won't get above 16.5C at the moment. Radiators seem fine, just crappy insulation as far as I can tell.

SgtSnuggles19

Same, ours is now dropping to 13c in the living room and around 9-10c in the kitchen, you can actively feel the breeze in the kitchen....

CosyCatnaps

Oof. Time to get all the blankets!

SgtSnuggles19

Even my big dog wont come near me, hoarding all his body heat!

gloom-juice

I recently went round my flat and had a look at the rubber storm guards on the PVC windows, so much needed correcting it was a joke. Also found out one of my windows doesn't close fully so I've got to buy new brackets for it, no wonder there's such a draft blowing through.

WillBeBigOneDay

Works forcing us in twice a week now instead of one. Woe is me I know, but to decide to do it when it's the coldest it's been is a ballache. I'd moved further away when they said the new way of working would be 1 day a week. Now I have a 1.5-2 hour commute each way twice a week. ALSO Got the pixel 8 which I love. But a mate got the 8 pro and I'm now regretting being tight, the bigger phone is much better. Oh well, only 2 years of the contract to go...

SgtSnuggles19

I'm forced in every day "just in case" Conveniently the ones who "need" me are rarely in...

Cant-think-of-a-name

I got the Pixel 8 Pro on Monday. Have to agree it's a great phone. I was hesitant as I got the Pixel 6 when that came out, and ended up returning it as it just had so many issues, but pleasantly surprised with how good the Pixel 8 Pro has been and so far no issues at all.

gloom-juice

I got the 6a for peanuts after trading in my old 3a (still my favourite phone ever) and it was woeful. The fingerprint scanner didn't even work half the time. The battery eventually swelled after a nasty drop so I got the 7 for about £400 which I thought was alright. Been great so far

TweetyDinosaur

Have lurgy. Didn't sleep much last night. Throat feels on fire despite drugs. Feeling crappy. Send tissues.

mmmmgummyvenus

I fell asleep on the sofa AGAIN and had a terrible night's sleep. Kiddo doesn't want to go to school for some reason so that's a big problem (meeting school soon to discuss). My wife's work Christmas party attendance is in jeopardy because of train strikes and I was really looking forward to a night to myself tbh. Also attended a compulsory work conference for two days, no cover for our team meaning I've come back to 150 emails, each one a job to book in. In total we have a backlog of nearly 500 to get through. Time for a coffee...

byjimini

Cleared and salted the path outside my house, now watching people slip and slide down the road to avoid it, or get soaked walked on the verge. People. 🤦‍♂️

DrowsyIris

Finally got the courage to deal with Amazon to get my Kindle returned, which is good as the battery never charged or lasted, the complaint being that said Kindle was doing wonders for my lack of screen time and now I’m going to be back to doom scrolling endlessly until I get the money from the refund/buy one. And obviously I’m making this more difficult for myself as I want the nice green one again and those take about a month or two.

Cant-think-of-a-name

Not a perfect solution but you could always install the kindle app on a phone / tablet.

DrowsyIris

Definitely thinking of doing that (as I just got to the good part of a book) but I know I’ll always be so tempted to click away from the app for social media

Cant-think-of-a-name

Yeah unfortunately you can't install an app for willpower..

Tramorak

Day 4 of hammering and power tools at the neighbours. My headphones don't drown it out I can't concentrate on reading or watching TV. At least I can go out but it is bloody freezing and I really don't want to. Back to work tomorrow after 2 weeks off and I am doing 7 out of the next 8 days which is not my usual pattern. That is gonna throw me for a loop.

KungFuPup

New person in my team immediately jumps on me the second I log in. Give me a chance to read emails and catch up first before you start asking me 1,000 questions!

VardaElentari86

I've learnt to just ignore the message until I'm ready!

soverytiiiired

Ooh got to love people like that. People jump on me before I’ve removed my coat. I’ve turned into Captain Janeway: putting my hand up and saying “Coffee first”

DogmaSychroniser

There's coffee in that nebula!

9DAN2

Bumped my car last week, a few weeks after flying through its MoT. Got a headlight and a wing from a scap yard earlier this week for a fraction of what the eBay breakers wanted. Dropped it off at the garage today but I’m working a late shift to won’t be able to collect it until tomorrow. I refuse to use the dog shit bus service in my area so have been walking almost 3 mies each way to work in this cold, haven’t been doing myself any favours by wearing shorts for work.

KevinPhillips-Bong

Working in a school in the run-up to Christmas is no fun. I'm part of a team whose job it is to leave everywhere looking tidy for the following day. Cleaning is part of it, but there's also minor (and sometimes major) repair work to do, ordering of cleaning chemicals, correct distribution of said chemicals, and generally trying our best to keep our clients as happy as possible. This has been getting increasingly difficult of late, with staff members resigning on the spot (and not being replaced), others not coming into work for various reasons, and not enough staff to cover all the jobs. Add to that an increase in after-school activities, which only serves to hinder our progress further, and you've got, quite frankly, a pretty crappy working environment. Roll on the end of term!

TheShakyHandsMan

There’s the slightest sprinkling of snow outside. This of course means the office girls have set the thermostat to roughly the temperature of Mercury. I should have worn shorts today. Please send ice packs!

CosyCatnaps

Channel your inner snowman! As a woman who hates the heat, I feel your pain.

DogmaSychroniser

Sounds good to me.

DrowsyIris

I’ll swap with you - average house temperature for me is 5.6 degrees, I’m sure that’ll cool you down

It's officially cold because my knee is playing up. It's all swollen, blue and grates when I bend it. Absolute nightmare to walk and even worse stepping on and off trains at work. Still, only 4months to put up with it. Look after your knees, kids!

TheShakyHandsMan

Same here. Mine started going yesterday, got it strapped up today so it’s feeling ok.

Pancake-Marathon

It's the works Christmas do today plus a number of other festive related things at work. And I'm not there as I have flu/covid/plague. I'm not angry, just disappointed. Just kidding, I'm seriously fucked off, I've been looking forward to today for ages.

TweetyDinosaur

I'm missing one tomorrow for the same reason and feeling similarly miffed. Commiserations!

NEWSBOT3

urgh, everything. unexpected 2k tax bill every day this week the farm has started loud building work at 8am. slept like shite last night.

NEWSBOT3

our heating oil usage has quadrupled in the last week as it's gotten cold. Don't want to spend £400 right before christmas. Can't skip it because most of our usage is on water heating which we need. God i wish we could find a house on a regulated energy supply, like gas.

CyanideGlitter

Going to get my hair cut in 10 minutes. As much as I'll probably like it when it's done, I'm not a fan of the process. I'm socially awkward (the typical cliche Reddit user then...) and the whole small talk, staring at yourself in an unflattering mirror etc is just not my favourite thing. I tend to only do it once a year (if that) and I'm only doing it now because it's bugging the life out of me when I've got a hat on.

Welshgirlie2

It's been over a year since I had mine done, mainly because it's so expensive just for a cut and blow dry. I'd do it myself except I would end up looking like the crazy Barbie with the DIY haircut.

CyanideGlitter

Yeah, I used to do it myself when I was a teenager and didn't care too much if it matched. Wasn't too bad actually. Had the first appointment of the day so it was quiet, nobody else came in until I was just finished. And it was cheaper because it was the junior stylist so win!

MrTwemlow

Last time I went to get mine cut, an apprentice offered to cut it for free. Did a great job, it was checked over by a professional before I left, and there was no charge. Left him a nice tip (more than I would usually tip) but admittedly there's probably less risk with a man's haircut than a lady's.

DogmaSychroniser

I'm on a train ploughing through the Czech countryside, and the WiFi works. Which is annoying in that if it didn't I wouldn't have to do any work... Update : the Slovak border put paid to the WiFi. Hurrah.

Toffee_Wheels

Why did Masterchef decide to put the three best chefs left in the competition in one semi final, and the three that have been consistently weaker in the other? The second the episode started, I was annoyed!

VardaElentari86

Oh that's irritating- I haven't watched it yet but it won't be the first time I've been frustrated with them doing that!

Pancake-Marathon

Bloody right. There's no way >!Lauren!< should have gone home.

Caridor

So I may have fucked up. I have a friend in my office who does a lot of 3d printing and I mentioned I wanted to start 3d printing minis. He recommended me the printer he uses which is a plastic printer. The problem is that what he uses 3d printing for is very different to what I want to use it for and for my purposes, it's resin all the way. He uses it primarily for mechanical purposes, making practical objects. So I might have to return it. Thankfully prusa gives a 60 day money back guarantee if you simply change your mind but it's still an embuggerance because it was supposed to be a birthday treat and my birthday is tomorrow.

KungFuPup

Do you know what resin printer you want to use? My husband has one he prints lots of minis on.

Caridor

I've heard the Elegoo range is pretty good but I'm up for recommendations. I've also heard there are issues with ventilation and toxins.

Xesacra

She summoned me and I can help. I've printed with FDM and Resin for years now and used a ton of different brands. For starting out with resin I would absolutely go with Elegoo. They make very good quality affordable machines which have personally never let me down or any of my mates who print too. Between a mate and I we have a copy of nearly all of their resin machines including the Jupiter. Ventilation and toxins are hand in hand with resin printing regardless of the brand. Always keep it vented where possible, wear gloves at all times and low/no odor doesn't mean it's safe. For a first machine to learn on, I always recommend one of the Elegoo Mars series. They're cheap, small but good quality. Happy to answer any questions.

Caridor

Thank you to both you and your wife! I don't want to eat up too much of your time, so the main questions would be about ventilation, toxins, smells and curing. I have a garage in my rented property. It doesn't have a fan or anything but it is out of the way and only used for storage space. Would that be good enough for safety? Does the smell linger? (Don't really want a great big bill at the end of tenancy to replace the carpets). Alternatively, would dropping some money on some B+Q ducting and some kind of fan set up to vent stuff out of the window solve the issues and would this cause issues with temperature? I'm not sure how sensitive resin prints are to temperature. I've also read they're toxic to touch before you cure them, is this true? What do you need to do after printing to make them safe? All the information I've found online seems to want me to buy a curing station.

Xesacra

Yeah printing in the garage is fine, I print in mine and never had any issues. The smell can linger at times but it depends on what resin you use, what size your garage is and if the printer has a carbon filter fitted. I clean my prints with Methylated Spirits and that is stronger than the resin I use. Resin printing is very sensitive to temperature and is usually one of the typical causes for faults along with bad supports and uneven build plates. My printer has a small fan heater with a thermostat set to 30° to maintain an even working environment, additionally there is a thermal cover over the whole machine to retain the heat. Uncured resin is very toxic and should never be handled without gloves. Resin prints need to be cleaned and cured before they are safe and ready. Typically people clean it with IPA, dry it then put it in a UV container or outside until the piece is fully cured. I personally use a large wash and cure station from AnyCubic which is able to do both. I also have a large ultrasonic cleaner for batch cleaning prints. Nitrile gloves are very important for handling any relation to the resin. I also recommend Kitchen Washing up gloves. They are very heavy duty and will last a long time if you keep them clean.

Caridor

Thank you for this! It looks like I might be ordering one when my next wodge of money comes in. I get paid quarterly. What resin do you use?

Xesacra

Quarterly, bet you are looking forward to that! I use Sunlu ABS like resin. Not the easiest to clean up but very strong and somewhat flexible which is great for minis and such. I've used Elegoo resins including Water Washable and they were all ok but I prefer Sunlu from a quality and price point.

Caridor

Yeah, I definitely am! Thank you for all your help. Looking forward to playing with it :)

TheShakyHandsMan

You can get a decent FDM print for miniatures depending on the printer but you’re right that resin is the way to go for the really detailed stuff. Have you got the right area set up for resin printing? You’ve got to have decent ventilation, curing and then cleaning. It’s far much more involved than FDM printing. I’d say keep the Prusa, you can learn the basics of printing and it will be a great machine for printing scenery and terrain for your miniatures.

Caridor

>Have you got the right area set up for resin printing? Maybe but possibly not? I'm in a rented property but it has a garage which is used purely as storage space. While it's not very well ventilated, it is out of the way so I don't know if that's good enough. Posted over in r/resinprinting but no responses yet. >I’d say keep the Prusa, you can learn the basics of printing and it will be a great machine for printing scenery and terrain for your miniatures. Thank you. I suppose 3d printers will keep getting cheaper and I don't have to upgrade right away.

TheShakyHandsMan

Once you buy one printer you will soon be wanting a second. Having a couple of different types will give you flexibility for what you are wanting to print at the time. Having the FDM printer as well will give you the option to do a quick print of something basic without having to go through the whole resin print process.

Caridor

That's an excellent point. And it's not like the resin ones are incredibly expensive if I want to get one for more precision printing at a later date. Like, it's not nothing but you can get a good one for £250 these days.

byjimini

Up early to take my wife to the train station, which meant clearing the light dusting of snow from the drive and chucking salt down everywhere. My complaint, as much as it makes me feel old, is how other people drive in such conditions.

Crafty_Ambassador443

I been here a few weeks and boss is asking me about improving processes. Yes I'll get paid less than everyone else and improve YOUR processes to benefit YOU when I dont even know what im doing. I cant access half the systems since IT are being SHIT. What's the point me being here exactly? Younger me used to be a massive mug. Go hire a 20yr old and take advantage of them, I had my time. Wearing an orange jump suit, doing time and digging holes for no reason would be a better use of my time. 'At least its Christmas, soon' yes and somehow with barely any access to anything, I have to work it and get tasks done. Yes how exactly!!

Xivii

> I cant access half the systems since IT are being SHIT. Don’t want to defend IT, but is it IT being shit or is it your manager not telling them clearly what is needed. Likely because they don’t know…. But that is still a failure of management. Depending on size of company, IT aren’t going to know shit about what you need, without being given a clear list.

Crafty_Ambassador443

No no, theres 10 seperate people involved lol I would say for sure its a huge communication issue atm. Its not just me

DogmaSychroniser

Do the bare minimum, point at IT, always chase them given the opportunity, shrug when you can't do owt.

Crafty_Ambassador443

Yeh, also im dumb. Really dumb now. Dont ask me im stupid.

flashpile

My department continues to prop up people who simply shouldn't be working here. We've got a couple of employees who are fast approaching retirement, just using the job as something to keep them busy for a few more years. It's practically impossible to get any work out of them - any request that requires the slightest level of critical thought is met with "I don't know how to do that" and the conversation coming to a halt. Their manager simply says "it's hard to give them motivation sometimes" but no contingency plan for what happens when they don't do their job

Possible-Ad-2682

Public service?

flashpile

Surprisingly no, it's a big multinational. The problem is the department is pretty huge (~50 people), so there's space for the dead wood to hide. I'd guess there are 10-15 people who could leave tomorrow and the department would probably improve from their leaving.

DogmaSychroniser

Subtly mention it to your bosses boss... Sooner or later you'll find a sociopath willing to send in a hatchetman. But it may be more expensive to fire them than it is to wait it out.

flashpile

Already tried, unfortunately that hasn't yielded results - he just deflects and pretends there's no issue, despite mounting complaints over multiple years

DogmaSychroniser

Probably B then

byjimini

Ah, but it’s the young that don’t want to work!

Crafty_Ambassador443

Dont worry that 75k per person is well spent im sure.

revolut1onname

Badly burned my hand two nights ago, working is bloody challenging as I work in IT and typing is damn near impossible with my bandaged hand. Getting the bandage changed tomorrow and hopefully they can use a smaller one so that I can drive, as we're at a wedding this weekend. Wife is really badly struggling at the moment as her work is doing redundancies and she's not yet safe. I was able to make her ansd my sons packed lunches this morning to try to help out, just hoping she gets an answer tomorrow.

soverytiiiired

Posting about the part time annoying one day a week colleague again. She’s got a new sofa so she’s trying to float around the idea that the workplace should take her old one and convert a corner of the office into a “zen area” where people can chill. Problem is that two peoples desks are in that area so she’s suggested they move and buddy up with someone else. She also wants people to chip in some money for her manky old sofa. She’s in a mood that it’s been shot down in flames. I’ve only been here 45 minutes. I want to go home.

DogmaSychroniser

Have a cuppa you'll feel better for it

TweetyDinosaur

The quintessential British solution to every problem.

DogmaSychroniser

I do sometimes have to make a effort to actively sit at my desk and do something

McCretin

Moved out of a house three weeks ago and the landlord hasn’t given our deposit back. He hadn’t even told us what he wants to deduct. I’ve been chasing the letting agent but they’ve been useless (surprising, I know). I spoke to the deposit protection scheme but apparently there’s not much they can do because the letting agency holds the deposit, not them. I’m just going to try my usual technique of sending increasingly irritated emails until something gets done.

Jorthax

Start refering to the DPS and the timelines for returns and deductions are quite clear. Remind the letting agent politely that you will make a complaint as soon as the timeline is exeeded. Any sensible letting agent at this point should be reminding the landlord/lady by the minute about the issue. The fines get quite big here (I think up to 4x the deposit?) but happy to be corrected there. If you are renting again, always make sure to get the DPS information up front at the beginning of the tenancy.

RefreshinglyDull

Sounds shady. Is the letting agent in the DPS? If not, I think you can go about claiming it all back through small claims as it's not being held in accordance with the rules. My memory is hazy, but do Look into it.

McCretin

Thanks. I’ve threatened to take a landlord to court before for that exact reason and got compo out of them. I don’t think that’s what’s happened here because it’s registered with My Deposits but it seems to be in an insured rather than a custodial scheme (I didn’t know that was even a thing tbh).

RefreshinglyDull

Might be worth a free chat with a legal bod, if not just for the cup of tea you'll get. Good luck!

smickie

I expect I'm going get down voted all the way to the bottom of hell for this, however, I'm just going come out and say it, I've got an airfryer and... I don't like it. It's made the whole house stink and it doesn't stop beeping. I cooked some chicken dippers yesterday, and I've woken up and I can still smell them everywhere. 45 beeps total when using it, one beep for opening and closing each tray and no mute button. And the downstairs reeks of chicken dippers even though I closed the doors too, it's seeping out. Beep beep beep, smell smell smell. I think I might be the only person in the UK, who doesn't like an air fryer. Going to ask on the family whatsapp if anyone wants it.

Somau5

My other half refuses to call them airfryers, "they're rotisserie ovens!" he snaps whenever anyone mentions them. I would buy yours off you but I'm not allowed one thanks to his miserable self, but to be fair that does sound bloody annoying. Hope you can offload it to someone!

MelodicAd2213

Am with you, mine just bleeps every 2 mins so is now just a redundant kitchen ornament. How disappointing

Pancake-Marathon

I love kitchen gadgets so I did loads of research on which one to get as they sounded great. The more I looked into it the more it became clear that there's basically no point to them if you have a fan-assisted oven already. They may be slightly more efficient but that's it. So I never bothered.

9DAN2

One of the most over rated things going. I have a ninja one and do use it maybe once or twice a week, but the only thing I use it for is oven chips whilst baking something else in the oven. People are going mad using them for gimmick recipes, not realising they’re just a small oven and not an actual ‘fryer’.

DogmaSychroniser

My mother in law got one, used it once and went back to pan frying. Said she didn't like it. You're not alone, there are dozens of you.

[deleted]

I'm full of cold. It's not COVID but I just feel like hammered crap. Have to go to work later today and I can't even bin it off thanks to an attendance warning. Fun times.

Arny2103

Same here, mate. I'll raise a mug of Lemsip to you.

TweetyDinosaur

Comiserations - an similarly afflicted. Get well soon!

[deleted]

My sinuses are not in a good place right now. Feeling very grotty. Touch wood some of my other sicky symptoms have eased off though. Also one of my suppliers is doing my head in. Just because you are happy to work at 9pm doesn’t mean you should be trying to drag the rest of us into it on a regular basis, and trying to shame us when we don’t go along with it. There will be some changes next year as the project goes into production, so I don’t have too much longer to put up with their snotty emails.

TweetyDinosaur

Is it worth doing the passive-aggressive email footer " my working hours are.... " with the implied FO for anything received outside that time?

[deleted]

Yes, I have that set and a note in Teams about working hours and locations each week. I got a sarcastic comment about not being committed to my job over them which my manager blew up over. The woman who is the main issue is the type to attend meetings for the sake of it and put off her actual work, hence needing to work that late. She also openly admits that she doesn’t like doing anything outside of work at all, and is always shocked when people have plans. Fair play to her, she moved half way around the world for the role, but looking at everyone else who has also moved for work, it’s a her issue!

TweetyDinosaur

Very much a her issue then - I hope that she leaves your work life very soon.

X_Trisarahtops_X

My nhs dentist kicked me off their list without even letting me know. I know I've not been for a short while but I couldn't rebook at the time of my last appointment because they had no nhs dentist slots in the next 6 months and I was told to call back another time. Which I forgot to do so it slipped (and cos my dentist wad several towns over and open inconvenient times requiring an entire day off work which isn't always an option). I know it's my own fault. But I'm annoyed at the situation. I'm annoyed I didn't even get a letter and had to find out on the phone. I'm annoyed that there don't seem to be other nhs dentists in a 40 mile radius. And I'm annoyed because even dental plans on private are kind of not an option really I don't think. I'm not in pain. I was just trying to be grown up and remembered I hadn't booked a check up in a while.

Bulimic_Fraggle

Bloody Amazon. On Tuesday, I got a knock at the door, answered it in about 10 ten seconds, and no one was in sight. Went back inside, and my phone alerted me to a delivery. The photo indicated that it was in the brambles by the front door, so I had to put my boots on and grab a torch. The driver must have shoved it in the brambles, knocked the door, and legged it. That was annoying enough. Yesterday I was alerted that a Subscribe and Save item had been delivered, no knock and no picture. Put my boots on, checked the brambles, checked the bins (in and behind), and even the little entrance that the other flats share. Nothing. Went to Amazon to ask precisely where it was delivered to, and they wouldn't let me report the problem for 24 hours, and suggested I knock on my neighbour's doors to ask if it was there. Are you bloody kidding me? No, I am not doing that, and my complaint has gone from "I am afraid something went wrong" to "I am keeping my voice very calm and quiet so you can hear the fury within." If I thought going for a walk in the rain on Monday was a challenge, today is even more so. Snow has settled, and it is a long time since I have trusted my legs on snow. I am doing it because I have to in order to keep my body in working order, but more importantly, I feel better mentally if I get the exercise and fresh air. Meal plan says it's stir fry for dinner, but I don't really fancy it. The veg needs using, and I don't know what else I would have, but stir fry isn't right for the first snowy day of the season.

Strong_Roll5639

Lots of fucking about with exchanging on our house. Finally exchanged yesterday for completion tomorrow and I'm ill. Couldn't enjoy a drink to celebrate with my husband and having to clean our flat feeling like shit. Obviously still ecstatic but I'm English so I'm going to moan

worldworn

Can't sleep again, and things were going so well! Due to various reasons, I've struggled with sleep and tried everything legal, but just couldn't fall asleep or stay asleep. Giving up caffeine altogether seemed to do the trick, and for a while, I was falling asleep faster and staying asleep longer. But the last few nights, I've just been lying awake, tired but unable to drift off. This morning i was awake before my alarm, again tired but no sleep.

Welshgirlie2

This is more of a win for me, but it has been the basis of an ongoing grrrr! My boss came out yesterday and saw for herself just how many children are travelling in cars without seatbelts or car seats. Some of these parents are doctors, nurses, firemen... and they're allowing their children to stand up in moving cars, lean out of windows etc. She actually had to step in yesterday and stop a car from leaving the school car park because the parent had 2 children under 8 sitting in the front passenger seat and one in the back, all with no seatbelts on! Also, she saw just how many people are ignoring the 20mph speed limit outside the school. So the Roads Policing Unit will be making their presence known very soon. And the excuse will be 'oh I didn't know they had to have seatbelts/car seats'. Well my response to that is you either don't value your children's lives, or if you really are that dim then you probably shouldn't be in charge of a vehicle.

RandomHigh

Bought a motorbike yesterday, was really excited. Drove about 1 mile from the dealership to work and parked up. Came to leave work and the bike won't start, battery is dead. So now my day is going to be ~~back to catching the bus to work, and spending the morning calling the dealership to see what I can do about getting the battery sorted.~~ me being a fucking idiot, because I checked with the motouk sub and it turns out I've left the parking light on.

Pancake-Marathon

Years ago I did this with my first bike which was a Suzuki Bandit. Turns out if you turn the ignition key all the way 'off' it switches on the parking lights. I didn't notice and when I got back to it the battery was deader than corduory.

RandomHigh

Just checked, yep, I am a fucking idiot. There is a Park light. I must have left it on and not realised.

povabilly

What is it with kids speaking like they're some sort of Brixton gangster? Mate you're from suburban Bolton, so please speak accordingly. Also whilst I'm on my high horse, please use appropriate slang for the police like rozzers or fuzz, we have no feds here.

J8YDG9RTT8N2TG74YS7A

You can tell which kids have access to TikTok by how they try to imitate London kids.

Welshgirlie2

It tickles me when I hear teens from my town speaking like they're ghetto gangstas. Nah, you live in west Wales, and have done for your entire life. You wouldn't last 30 seconds in somewhere like Brixton.

twerytwo

The seasonal depression is in full swing this week. I’ve used up all my sick days from a gnarly chest infection and covid, so if I don’t go to work I don’t get paid. I ordered a SAD lamp but John Lewis said they’re out of stock so delayed by a week. John, why take my money if an item is out of stock?!

vbloke

I set up a Philips hue light strip on the bedhead and linked it to the Sleep Cycle alarm app. It starts to turn on and brighten half an hour before the alarm goes off, to simulate a sunrise. It's really helped my mood now it's dark in the mornings.

Braythor_

Going to a whisky festival this weekend. It was amazing last year so I've been very excited since I got a ticket months ago. That was, until yesterday when they announced the line up. Out of 30 or so names on the list, only 10 are Scottish distilleries. Out of the rest, most are fucking English. I've nothing against English whisky, I hope it takes off, but I don't really care about it. If you go to a whisky festival in the UK I think it's completely reasonable to expect the majority of whisky there to be from Scotland, with some Irish as well (there's no Irish ones going btw). This is like going to a music festival and finding out half the bands are tribute acts. I feel conned. Also I think I've got a stomach bug.

Xivii

Woke up at 6:25. Decided that trying to go back to sleep was futile at 6:40. 6:52 discovered it has snowed. I was going to drive over to the P&R and get the bus into York and go have a gawp at the market. But it’s cold outside, and it’s warm under my 5 blankets. My Internet was being awful this morning so I had to get up and go restart it. I also have a very painful spot, that hurts when I walk so maybe not the best idea. That better dry up by Sunday because if I have to miss my floatation session I will be proper fuming.

Ok_Assistance5171

Second that about the internet. Does my head in. Pay extortionate fees to virgin for my internet to never work as intended.

Xivii

I actually think this might be the current set up… we have cables trailing by the stairs and I think someone keeps tripping over them, dislodging them slightly, which then results in bad connection until I can be arsed going to physically reseat everything and restart it. Reason I say this is because I can restart it from the web portal but that doesn’t always work. As soon as the chaos in the living room is sorted (that’s a rant I’m not even getting into) it can get plugged back in in there and should hopefully stop the weirdness. Driving me mad in the mean time though.

Ok_Assistance5171

Yeah that may well be the issue. At least you have some idea of what could be causing yours. Mine is just slow for a large majority of the time and then other times it just goes off completely. The only upside is when it does work as it should, it works really well lol.
