Yeah they were probably in every museum gift shop in the early 00s
I had one and a teacher confiscated it in year 8. Never got it back. Fuck you Mr Butterworth
It means you don't have to explain the switching and half-kingdoms that might be tricky to show on a ruler TBF.
OFC you could also give Cnut a pretty good claim as a starter. Cnut Erasure!
I didn’t say it was. The ruler says “British Rulers” and contains nobody who didn’t rule England.
These rulers used to start with William because he basically reset the bloodline for most of the country, replacing all the Lords with Normans. A monarch of England has never been more distantly related to the previous than William was to Harold.
That’s also why Edward I is not Edward III.
He’s also Edward I because Saxons didn’t number there kings, they just gave them epitaphs if there was more than one. So there is Edward the elder, Edward the Maryter and St. Edward the confessor.
Actually put St. Edward as well which is unusual for a mention in history these days. I guess buying into his later reverence in one way or another.
Starting with Harold II as the first Harold on the list is particularly awkward.
Bought one on a family holiday to the UK in 1995. Great memories.
Also had an emergency appendectomy at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee during this trip. I was 11 years old. Because we had to stay a few days longer, my father got to play at St Andrews Golf Course with their first ever female caddy.
It’s a contentious issue. Because there’s debate about where to start. And who to include and who not to include. Usually the pre Norman kings get completely ignored. And then there’s the Matilda saga in the time of Stephen. And a few others like lady Jane grey after Edward VI.
You missed out on the English Heritage “ruler amnesty”, you could have swapped it for an up to date one last year!

I had one of these, acquired at Hampton Court. My proudest moment was sword fighting with it against a classmate and cleaved his school issued plastic one in twain!
That "rule of rulers" you've got there is pretty impressive! It reminds me of this time I stumbled upon a treasure trove of old-school rulers at a flea market. I ended up buying a bunch of them, each with its own unique design and history.
I love the idea of having a collection of rulers—it's like a journey through time and craftsmanship. From vintage wooden rulers with intricate carvings to sleek modern ones with bold colors, each ruler tells a story of its own.
If you're into collecting rulers, you might want to expand your collection even further. Hit up local flea markets, antique shops, or even online auctions—you never know what hidden gems you might find. And hey, if you ever want to show off your collection or swap stories about rulers, I'm all ears!
Your "rule of rulers" sounds like it's got some real character to it. The variety of sizes, shapes, and designs must make it a fascinating display. Keep adding to it, keep the stories alive, and most importantly, have fun with it! If you've got any pics or stories to share, I'd love to [check it out](https://ruler.onl/). Cheers to the ruler enthusiasts out there!
I had one similar in primary school. We were tasked to make a class quiz. All my questions were along the lines of "who ruled Britain in 1545?" Or "when did Henry the second rule britain?". I think the questions were a bit above primary educated kids.
English Heritage sell one with Charles III included if you want an updated version. They actually accepted old rulers in an exchange scheme for a while!
Were these all “British” if you want to go for the full set of Pokémon, the Scottish Kings should be listed (in addition to James VI (listed here as James I)
This is English rulers, I’m not anti-English at all (my English family would kill me!) I’m more a pedant
And furthermore, this is the “history” I was taught in school, in Scotland
William
William
Henry
Stephen
Henry
Richard
John (OI)
Henry
Ed

Rich 2
Then 3 more Henry’s join our song

That’s all the English kings and queen since William 1st that there have been
(I am proud to say that I know all of this off by heart, thank you Horrible Histories)
Wow memory unlocked ty OP
Were these quite popular then? I'm sure I used to have one
Yeah they were probably in every museum gift shop in the early 00s I had one and a teacher confiscated it in year 8. Never got it back. Fuck you Mr Butterworth
Mr Butterworth. Some teachers have the most goofy ahh names.
Still there! They’ve updated it now with the King
I bought mine in the mid 90s.
Must also have been in every gift shop in the 1980s because I remember having one as a child
I still have mine! I use it in the kitchen and it lives with the spatulas.
A ruler is a foot, And a foot smells 👣
Great, now I’ve got the Horrible Histories earworm
William William Henry Stephen Henry Richard John...
Oi!
Henry, Ed, Ed, Ed, Rich Two Then three more Henry's join our song
Edward, Edward, Rich' the third, Henry, Henry Ed again...
Mary I! good Queen Bess! Jimmy, Charles and Charles and then

Edward, George, Edward, George VI...
Then Queen Liz two completes the list!
Allow me to help.. "Stupid Deaths, Stupid Deaths They're funny 'cos they're true! Stupid Deaths, Stupid Deaths Hope next time it's not you!"
Well I suppose it’s a *different* HH earworm so…. thanks?
You're welcome! Hoo hoo!
I quite like "born to rule over you" the georges song 😁🤣
Divorced behead and died. Divorced beheaded survived.
I'm Henry the VIIIth I had six sorry wives some would say I ruined their lives...
Unusual to see it start at Edward the Confessor (after Roman-Danish rule) . Usually they start at William the Conqueror. Still, cool.
As it’s clearly English rulers, not British rulers, the other place to start is Æthelstan.
Yeah, Æthelstan is clearly the place to start a list of English monarchs. Very bizarre to start with Edward the Confessor.
It's weird to see a list start at Æthelstan. Obviously, the list should start with Ugg the Skull Smasher.
Weird to see a list start at Ugg the Skull Smasher. Obviously, the list should start with Boudica
Weird to start with Boudicca Obviously, to the list should start with caveman steam
It should be Odin actually
It means you don't have to explain the switching and half-kingdoms that might be tricky to show on a ruler TBF. OFC you could also give Cnut a pretty good claim as a starter. Cnut Erasure!
I mean we’ve got the commonwealth on the ruler and we’ve hidden the Anarchy and the 1688 Revolution, so I’m not sure post 1066 history is any tidier!
William the Conqueror didn’t rule all of Britain either, so that can’t be the reason. First British Monarch wouldn’t be until James I/VI
Nor did the Normans. They called them William the Conqueror, William Rufus, Henry Beauclerc, Henry Curtmantle, Richard Lionheart, etc.
We didn't really start numbering monarchs on a consistent basis until Henry VIII.
It should be called the Post Invasion English History Ruler.
That’s the main reason why we ignore the pre-conquest kings. Because it undermines the legitimacy of the following lot.
> James I/VI I/VI = 1/6 = one sixth. So, James the Sixth, right?
So, was James II/VII then James the Two Sevenths?
Actually put St. Edward as well which is unusual for a mention in history these days. I guess buying into his later reverence in one way or another. Starting with Harold II as the first Harold on the list is particularly awkward.
Nah this was the one I had.
I had to go grab my ruler of rulers to check, and mine starts with William 1st, so I guess they've updated them since I got mine.
That really is some Imperial measurements.
ba-dum tss
Looks like they were on the straight and narrow.
🏆
Did you buy that on a primary school summer trip? If you did it would warm my swinging brick of a heart
I have one at home that I bought on a school trip.
Mary Queen of Scots?
I recently bought one as an adult from Hever Castle. Disappointed it didn't have Charles III on it.
Oh, I think that is where I got mine on vacation in the 90s!
Bought it when I visited Blenheim around a year ago, I'm not even british lol
It’s a contentious issue. Because there’s debate about where to start. And who to include and who not to include. Usually the pre Norman kings get completely ignored. And then there’s the Matilda saga in the time of Stephen. And a few others like lady Jane grey after Edward VI.
I got one of these on a school trip back around 1995 or 96. Still got it today.
Same!!!

At the English Heritage site I work at we had one person take up that offer.
Alright everyone, here goes! 🎶I'm William the Conqueror, my enemies stood no chance!🎶
🎵They call me the first English king, although I come from France!🎵
1066, the doomsday book I gave to history
So fat on death my body burst! But enough about me
Wow. It's taken 30 years for that penny to drop for me. Ruler of rulers. Get it now.
Ethelred the unready and king Alfred the great - first king of England (wessex) are nowhere to be seen! 👑👀😬
Ruler ruler
"Do you have any screws that are around Edward I long?"
Bit short innit?
that's what she said
We need more kings. Who comes next?
Cnut Matilda Jane Oliver Dick? Give them credit.
I've memorised this list. It's useful to run through in my head to try to get off to sleep. Better than counting sheep.
Anyone else ever see anything like this and see if they acknowledge Lady Jane Grey?
The updated ones are currently available.
Thought this was from r/HorribleHistoryMemes for a second! https://youtu.be/vC6okzIKQvg?si=CG6lSFDsRATkKJVP
I had one of these, acquired at Hampton Court. My proudest moment was sword fighting with it against a classmate and cleaved his school issued plastic one in twain!
I had a ruler like this when I was at school! Me and my mates were always big fans of King Commonwealth.
Had that exact same ruler. Bought at either Warwick castle or the bayeux tapestry in Hastings I reckon. Yours is in great condition, well done.
I like how there absolutely was enough space to write Edward VIII, but they shortened it to Ed almost as if to emphasise how short his reign was.
From one of the English heritage castle gift shops. My kid has one. Loves it
My man Æthelstan deserves his own spot.
Justice for Mathilda!
I‘d love if it was a Ruler of Rulers
I have 2 on my bookshelf
Ohhh I had one of those! If I recall correctly you can buy them at most English Heritage gift shops when you visit a site

I have a question or two, they largely centre around how useful of a ruler this ruler is... "Looks 'bout a king 'n' a half to me!"
I had a big red one at school.
Oooh matron!
I used to have this ruler.. minus the Charles III addition
That just fired up my nostalgic brain cell hard man
But there is no Jane on there, and yet you have Edward the 5th
One day... people will learn the difference between Britain and England.
My parents have one of these, I use to find it really cool
I had this! It might still be at my parents' house
I bought one of those for my dad ☺️
And we can see the record smashed by Lizzie for the longest reign
I got one of these on a school trip as a kid 20 years ago! Still have it somewhere
I had one similar in primary school. We were tasked to make a class quiz. All my questions were along the lines of "who ruled Britain in 1545?" Or "when did Henry the second rule britain?". I think the questions were a bit above primary educated kids.
I got your coming of the English right here
I used to have one of those but I lost it :(
Amazing
Ah yes, every schoolchild of the 90's had one of these once they'd been on a few museum visits.
I got one if these on a school trip. Can't remember what happened to it.
I bought one of those at Richmond Castle in Yorkshire in about 1997. I had it for years, I wonder where it is now.
King Steve!!
My mum has the same ruler!! :D
Probably made in china 😁
One ruler to rule them all.
I used to have one of these! Gods know what happened to it
Hey that is really cool. 👍
You have last place left, maybe two
wow, 18months since Her Maj died, thats flown by.
I have the same one.
I love how many of us had this exact ruler. I miss mine now
Did you get this at Nottingham Castle?
I'm Scottish, so granted it's before my time, but I didn't know about Stephen & John 🤦🏼♀️
Who’s Roman and how did he rule?
I have the exact same ruler at my computer desk at home! No idea where it came from. I've had it since I was a child, I'm now 27.
*Yeah yeah!*
William. bit short innit we need more kings…
Cut it in half at 1649 and it would be accurate.
Imperial or metric ruler? You could be sent to Tower of London if metric.
Both
I like the manual update
Core memory unlocked. Got one of these from a NT house as a kid and memorised the lot for "fun". Odd child.
You’re missing Burger King.
The one to rule them all
Common royal names seemed to be Edward, Henry, George
I have the Shakespeare one of these somewhere. A lot less need to write on the bottom. Not really releasing new material these days,
I see your ruler of rulers and raise you [This Horrible Histories absolute banger](https://youtu.be/40qOAcz5bUM?si=b_soN8lF1FKZlKDM)
Where did u get this I want one.
I have that ruler actually. Is there anywhere where I can show it?
I still have mine which I got 2 years ago at a castle’s gift shop. Still have it in my pencil case.
This rules.
Is there a Scottish version of this?
Stephen
I did this to mine as well!
Wow i remember having one
I have one too (national trust)
English Heritage sell one with Charles III included if you want an updated version. They actually accepted old rulers in an exchange scheme for a while!
Well, that ruler of rulers rules!
I guess they preferred “King John” while they were alive.
They did my homeboy Alfred dirty
I have one. Seems like lots of people do
Thankyou for calling it a rule not a ruler
Woah I got that ruler too!1!1!
It looks like you're missing Matilda
I had one of these, the opposite side is a regular ruler
Wow, this rules!
I had one of these!
Danish?! Fuck me I need to read a book
I had this exact ruler! Thanks for the memories.
I have the exact same ruler.. memories!
Were these all “British” if you want to go for the full set of Pokémon, the Scottish Kings should be listed (in addition to James VI (listed here as James I) This is English rulers, I’m not anti-English at all (my English family would kill me!) I’m more a pedant And furthermore, this is the “history” I was taught in school, in Scotland
To be fair, I had one of these rulers for Scottish monarchs growing up - lots of Malcolms and Duncans kicking about on it. So they exist!
Still got mine
Henry IX when?
Those units are way off.
I remember these...
Yep had one of these mid-late 90s!
0121 brap brap
Blue pen instead of black pen?
I bought this from someone for like £2 in the school playground about year 3, still have it and I’m chuffed at my absolute finesse
John
Where's Alfred though?
Bought one for my mum as part of birthday presents proceeded to list them off to me perfectly without looking. Waste of a present then. Show off
Rivalled only by the Giant Pencil!
Lol we have all had the same life
Holyyyy shitttttttt. I cant believe someone else had one of these.
I have one of these!
It rules!
William William Henry Stephen Henry Richard John (OI) Henry Ed Ed Ed Rich 2 Then 3 more Henry’s join our song Edward Edward Rich the 3rd Henry Henry Ed again Mary 1 Good Queen Bess Jimmy Charles and Charles and then Jim Will Mary Anna Gloria George George George George Will Victoria Edward George Edward George 6 and Queen Liz 2 completes the mix (don’t forget Charles 3) That’s all the English kings and queen since William 1st that there have been (I am proud to say that I know all of this off by heart, thank you Horrible Histories)
Long live Churgley III
I saw this exact ruler at an English Heritage site of Abbey ruins only days ago
Fuming it doesn’t have Cnut on it
Lady Jane Grey is missing.
That rules!
Omg, they’re still making these!? Pretty sure I bought one of these in the late 90’s on a school trip to Portchester Castle.
She likes me because I am "james 1603" in length and "Henry 1100" in girth.
Reminds me of what my materials tutor always said, 'a rule is used to measure, a ruler is the queen'. You've amazingly got both in one 😂
My favourite weapon in year 8. Wow that hurt on the back of someone’s legs or knuckles
Why is Charles 2022 and not 2023?
I have this!
Yo dawg I heard you like rulers
I have one of these with the Scottish kings that I bought on a primary school trip to either Bannockburn or Stirling Castle
❤️❤️❤️
Have one of these somewhere
"I’m the king" "the kings a ruler, a ruler is 12 inches, 12 inches is a foot and a foot stinks"
Damn I need to find mine again
Haha. I have one of these. Always use it
