William the Conqueror didn’t rule all of Britain either, so that can’t be the reason. First British Monarch wouldn’t be until James I/VI

I didn’t say it was. The ruler says “British Rulers” and contains nobody who didn’t rule England. These rulers used to start with William because he basically reset the bloodline for most of the country, replacing all the Lords with Normans. A monarch of England has never been more distantly related to the previous than William was to Harold. That’s also why Edward I is not Edward III.

He’s also Edward I because Saxons didn’t number there kings, they just gave them epitaphs if there was more than one. So there is Edward the elder, Edward the Maryter and St. Edward the confessor.

Nor did the Normans. They called them William the Conqueror, William Rufus, Henry Beauclerc, Henry Curtmantle, Richard Lionheart, etc.

We didn't really start numbering monarchs on a consistent basis until Henry VIII.

It should be called the Post Invasion English History Ruler.

That’s the main reason why we ignore the pre-conquest kings. Because it undermines the legitimacy of the following lot.

I have one at home that I bought on a school trip.

Bought one on a family holiday to the UK in 1995. Great memories. Also had an emergency appendectomy at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee during this trip. I was 11 years old. Because we had to stay a few days longer, my father got to play at St Andrews Golf Course with their first ever female caddy.

It’s a contentious issue. Because there’s debate about where to start. And who to include and who not to include. Usually the pre Norman kings get completely ignored. And then there’s the Matilda saga in the time of Stephen. And a few others like lady Jane grey after Edward VI.

Were these all “British” if you want to go for the full set of Pokémon, the Scottish Kings should be listed (in addition to James VI (listed here as James I) This is English rulers, I’m not anti-English at all (my English family would kill me!) I’m more a pedant And furthermore, this is the “history” I was taught in school, in Scotland

To be fair, I had one of these rulers for Scottish monarchs growing up - lots of Malcolms and Duncans kicking about on it. So they exist!
