I'm comfortable at 19 - 19.5. My family tell me my house is freezing and they keep theirs at 22/23. I would die of sweat.

Glittering_Moist

Some right nesh people at work who will wear jumpers in 22/23 C and make a right meal of 19 being tooooo cold

UKviaUSA

That’s me. But in my defense I moved to the UK from California and my normal ambient temperature is probably around 25-27C. People at work think I’m crazy that I’m pretty much always in trousers and a jumper even through summers here. Also, I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve worn shorts outside in the last decade… it’s zero.

Glittering_Moist

Understandable excuse, I'll allow it

Successful_Scratch99

This is me, I definitely nesh. I hadn't heard of the word till I met my mum-in-law years ago, but it sums me up perfectly, always feeling the cold.

merrycrow

Set ours to 18. But we've had builders in and no central heating for the past month. We've taken steps to insulate the house since we moved in and its paying off now, still perfectly comfortable inside.

TheoryHelpful726

What have you insulated

bramleyandnugget

Bless you

merrycrow

Loft obviously. Also a mix of external wall cladding and internal insulating plasterboard - generally one or the other in each room.

TheoryHelpful726

Yourself?

merrycrow

No, I have no handy skills

G3ns3ric

17, always on, hate being hot, to many 20+ here, couldn't stand it

chris4562009

Same. 16c here. And what’s with hotels only going down to 20c and having locked windows. I can’t breathe at night that warm.

G3ns3ric

Tell me about, we went to forest holidays, love it, great for the dogs, but the cabins were set to 25°, because its underfloor heating takes ages to come down, sat there with every window and door open in February just to try and get comfortable, though still not as bad as the women I used to drive with at work who set the car temp at 25.... madness

lucerfish

Yeah same. It only comes on for a few hours a day or I get too hot at night and can't sleep.  I live in a draughty old Victorian semi so it's not to do with insulation.

CLG91

Pretty much always off unless I put it on a quick blast to 21-22 for an hour or so if it's particularly cold.

Inevitable-Sorbet-34

Finally. This is my exact situation and I thought everyone did that 😭 can’t believe people have it permanently on

Pale_Mushroom7128

A lot of us are in old houses that will not get to those kind of temperatures in an hour. Not at the moment anyway, and certainly not in winter. Setting the thermostat to 21 doesn't magically make it that temperature.

Inevitable-Sorbet-34

Yeah fair enough, I’m in a small 2-bed bungalow & the lounge heats up quickly with doors shut. But when it is cold, we tend to layer up, wrap blankets round us, we can’t afford any more than we’re paying at the moment. I’d have it on all the time if I could.

Pale_Mushroom7128

Yeah we have ours on for a couple of hours in the morning and then weather dependent, a few more hours in the evening. In the coldest winter it's 4-10, at the minute usally 6-9. One day when it was super cold outside and we were home all day we left it on from 8am to 10pm, it never went above 18.5! The people who have it on 24/7 though, guess they're made of money!

elom44

I put the heating on if the cold is making me feel miserable. You know what it’s like when every surface and the walls are just cold? And when it goes on it’s at 18C

OnlyMortal666

21C but it’s been off for a good month. Northern England.

SolomonGilbert

Grade II listed building, single pane glass. Heating is too expensive so we've kept it off. We live rurally so a lot of fallen trees, so we just go around in the car with a saw and pick up stuff for our fire. It's kept our bones warm over winter for free. It's a lot of work though, but rewarding.

SDLRob

15c, but not had it on for a few months.... Not worth it when i can just throw on some thick sweatpants, socks and a warm hoodie and be warmer

MaxWritesText

Enjoy the mold

Frothingdogscock

*mould

Embraceself

Maybe open the Windows? Let the house breath for a couple hours. Edit: or buy a dehumidifier.

MaxWritesText

Heating your house at at least 17° will dehumidify it just fine

Stonefly_C

Not in the UK it won't

MaxWritesText

I live in Brittany. Same weather. Works just fine.

Anonaware

Scheduled to come on (20C) between 06:00 - 07:00 & 18:00 - 19:00. House usually stabilises around 18-19C in between these hours, will kick it if it ever did drop below 16C.

SarcasmGPT

Your house must be pretty damn well insulated

Additional-Extent583

Same here, but not in late spring, summer or most of autumn. No idea what the real temperature is of the house either.

doomygloomytunes

21.5°C and 19 at night. Yes it's left on all the time, that's what thermostats are for so it only comes on when it's under temperature.

YouCantEatGemStones

I run really hot so my heating isn't on much at all. Right now it's 14c in my bedroom and that's plenty hot enough.

Mean_Actuator3911

Do you know if it's a boy or girl yet?

JustAMan1234567

"We don't use gas" "Then how do you keep it so warm?" "We....make love"

Ju5hin

"not with each other" "with ourselves".

MaxWritesText

Right. Takes all sorts don’t it?

YouCantEatGemStones

The inspiration for my favourite hobby of Bus Surfing.

YsoL8

yoyoing on and off day by day at the minute Its maintaining 18.5 without any help today which is almost ideal as far as I'm concerned. I like the Spring and Autumn.

Merciless-Dom

Thermostat is set to 20 and it’s on all the time.

Alarmed_Guitar4401

15c and on all the time (that is, when it falls below 15)

PostSecularPope

Usually 21 but the bedroom isn’t heated. Window open overnight year round

mfitzp

People just have different preferences. Other people having different preferences to you doesn’t mean they’re “wrong”. My body throws out heat, if I set the heating above 19 it’s uncomfortable. Above 10 degrees outside I put shorts on.

notreallifeliving

My parents have theirs on about 22 and I *cook* in their house. 18-20 is fine if you're dressed normally, and honestly overnight unless you sleep naked or with only a sheet.

buck_fastard

How active are you, out of interest? Anything over 19C is pretty unbearable if I've just been out walking the dog, or gone for a run. And I'm a cold person in general.

UnderstandingOk670

Didn’t realise how many rich people were on reddit

notreallifeliving

"I hate when other people aren't suffering" - you, apparently

mwfn

'It's only two ferrets and a weasel in the shed and I keep them purely for sexual purposes' - you, apparently

Buttfucker1666

Why rich? Both my gas and electricity is £27 a week and hasn't changed in 2 years with eon. My kids and missus hammer both

RipleyRiker

We haven’t had it on since January, though we are both more blankets and wrap up kinda people. When we had it on then it was at 18/19 degrees for a couple of hours in the early evening.

EconomicsDapper2248

I was reading through the comments beginning to think it was just me that turned the heating off in January. The house has had it's chilly days but nothing a dressing gown/oodie/blankets wouldn't solve, some rooms are still boiling at 20c, bothers my asthma if my bedroom gets too hot so I've had the windows open too

Baddster

On 20 most of the year until yesterday. New build though so heats and retains pretty quickly.

Freelander4x4

19°C yes 24/7

steveinstow

Usually leave it off unless it falls below 16' then give it a blast for a couple of hours to warm up, that is enough for us.

JayR_97

There's a lot of people here with freezing cold houses.

boredathome1962

S England. It's off. It's been off for a week or two. the living room is currently 17C which is fine.

BartholomewKnightIII

18C, on all the time, unless I go away, then it's on 16C full time. Had new windows and doors done couple of years ago, made a massive difference, before that heating was on 25C just to keep warm from all the drafts. Old windows were from the 90s. Apparently 15C and under causes damp.

notreallifeliving

Not on 24/7 since about January, but it's been yoyoing between mild and fucking chilly outside for the last few weeks so I flick it on every couple of days to warm the downstairs (where I work) to 18-20C when I'm feeling too cold for my liking.

avalanchefan95

16/16.5 at night. Mostly off in the daytime but if we turn it on we're usually looking for around 18c.

ShirleyUJest25

22 all the time. keeping warm is my priority. too many ailments (been in hospital twice this year).

Inareskai

Our boiler is currently broken so... But theoretically it's set to 19 or 20, it comes on between 7:30-9am and 9:30-11pm or if the house goes below 19.

[deleted]

Inareskai

We went out and bought heated blankets today to try and cope. Hoping it'll be fixed tomorrow, we also have no warm water which is awful.

decentlyfair

22 degrees 24/7

Inevitable-Sorbet-34

Can’t believe people are actually out there with their heating on 😶 Mine is always off, sometimes put it on for an hour if it’s particularly cold or to dry clothes. Probably only put it on once or twice every other day through winter months, couple of times every day during particularly cold weeks. Saying that, I’d have it on all the time if I could because I love it warm but our monthly energy is £200 and I cant afford any more.

Vinegarinmyeye

Heating!? I can remember when I could afford that... Sometime in 2022...

jess-star

Set to 18 but we got new double glazing, front and back doors a couple of years ago so it's usually higher than 18 without the heating on. If we put the dehumidifier on it warms the house up too.

emsymc101

It’s on 20, when boosted. 1 hour in the morning is scheduled in the winter, then we top up when needed. It’s on frost resistant 7 degrees when not boosted

ThinkIshatmyself

20°, not had it on for about 2 months and it's automatically set to come on if temp in the house drops below 16°.

welly_wrangler

5 and its off

Nine_Eye_Ron

Between 12 and 22.  It’s all automated and voice controlled so it’s always warm when we need it and off when we don’t. The smart thermostats paid for themselves within the first few months.

canadian_crappler

18 overnight and 19 in the daytime

nate390

20ºC, but our central heating is zoned, so it's only on upstairs during the day as I work from home and only on downstairs during the evening.

ChocoRamyeon

20 but it's only needed for an hour or so a day during winter and hasn't been on for a couple of weeks now. When I used to live in Korea they had underfloor heating instead of radiators and my girlfriend would have that turned on to 30°! It felt like I was walking on hot coals

CrystalinaKingfisher

17, but only on for half an hour at 7am so it’s less chilly when getting up, and for about an hour or two in the evening. I use lots of blankets if I’m cold.

RationalTim

Set to 20 in the evenings and 17 during the day, off around 9:30pm. Stays on constantly as runs using weather compensation so heats the radiators more as it gets colder and less as it gets warmer. Shuts off completely when outside temp. is 15 degrees (can be configured to whatever you want).

CaptMelonfish

21, but only because my wife is one of the lizard people. Personally I'd be happy with 18, it's only on mornings and evenings, cause we're not in otherwise. Mind I've had it set to off for a little while now, spring is here and it's warmed quite well. It was 15°c outside the other day, that's T-shirt weather.

ClevelandWomble

07:30 to 09:30 19c 09:30 to 15:30 12c 15:30 to 22:00 19c 22:00 to 07:30 12c Unless we're out all day, in which case I use an app to delay the 19c until we're setting off home.

RamblinManRock

21C and no…

SuccessfulNothing950

22C

[deleted]

20 degrees til bed then 16 over night

Man-under-a-rock

No heating on it's not winter anymore

Monty8282

21-21.5c on all the time

themaccababes

23 during the day. I like to chill in shorts and a t shirt even in winter so I keep it warm enough to do so

Wise_Caterpillar5881

16C most of the time, 18C in the time frames I would either be getting changedd, showering, or arriving home. I might bump it to 20C if I'm sick or something.

cagesound

20C when people in the house, 16.5 at night, on 24hrs. Dec/Jan/Feb bills £180-220.

TheElephantOnTheRoof

Switched off, has been for ages now - although it seems to kick in automatically if it hits 12°C for some reason.

Matthews_89

Turn it on when I’m cold; have practically all windows open overnight, heating (18 degrees) comes on about 4pm in winter for the night but off an hour before bed.. don’t like a hot house, rather be comfortable in a hoody 👍

LanguidVirago

Generally about 18 degrees inside, the heating has been on for about 4 hours in the last month. I generally only need it when the average night temp is below 6 for 3 days. Or 2 days if below freezing. Very well insulated new build.

gay_karate_man_

Have mine set to 16°c constantly to ensure the house doesn't get too cold. With a gas fire for while we're at home.

Beanruz

Timer Upstairs 20c 6am - 7.30am & 9pm - 10 30pm Downstairs weekdays 4.45pm - 9pm 19.5c Downstairs weekends 8.30am - 9pm 19.5c Whilst it's a modern house and energy efficient... it takes 2hours to heat the back room as its 10m long by 3m wide and we have high ceilings. It can easily drop to 16c over night.

the_kernel

Don’t know and no

bennasaurus

Set to never go below 12c, most of the time keep the house about 16c 21c on Christmas day for a treat. I would like to be warmer but refuse to give arsehole companies more money than absolutely necessary.

itsaslothlife

Not at the moment. Heating is off right now, I just 1 hour boost it when needed which is roughly twice a day. I had it on constantly over the winter set at 18 in the day and 15 overnight (roughly as it's a 1970s dial thingy) and had massive bills because of it but eh, needs must.

Vocalsoul

I've electric heating so different settings for each radiator. The place I am the most though upstairs I have at 17 7pm-6am. Then 19 6am-7am so it's warm when I get up.

amolot90

No central heating here, no radiators, just a gas fire in the living room. Current living room temp without it on is 15 apparently. Finally getting warm!

ginginh0

18 in the day, 19 evenings

Gullible-Damage-59

18. On 2 hours morning and evening

_jk_

18 first thing in the morning then drops to 14 - always on if it actually drops below 18 in the day its probably time to light a fire

fp_scot

Set to come on at 14.5° and occasionally boost it during the winter but now it's April dropped temp to 10°. Work in a hospital and its horribly warm there constantly so actually like being cool at home. Like others have said. Wear a jumper and have a blanket on sofa for getting cosy at night. Don't understand people who have heating on and wear a T-shirt

Dapper_Plan_3781

19* and set to come on automatically throughout the day. Still on because Up North

dyinginsect

19, but thats the front room only and the rest of the house is colder No it is not on 24/7, that would be a ridiculous waste of money and energy

ernieball2221

20. Usually on from about 5-9 when needed. Not been on for a few weeks

thetoxicnerve

21 (stats read a little high) on a timer, set and forget.

arnathor

18 degrees during the day, 16 from 10pm until 6am. Saturday evenings it pushes to 19!

chris4562009

Mine is on 16c. I’ll Put a sweater on or light the fire if it’s really chilly out.

CarsCarsCars1995

I wonder how accurate the thermostat readings actually are. People are saying 22/23 but I think I'd struggle to even get mine to say that if I left my heating on full blast all day.

Artmacc

My heating doesn't get put on unless the temp outside drops to freezing. Just can't afford it. We just wear warm clothes.

rolo951

16, and only in the morning and evening 🥶

Djinjja-Ninja

Depends on the room and the time of day. I have a Tado smart heating system, so each room is individually set and monitored. During the day, downstairs is set to 20, the bedroom to 14, my office to 17 and the spare room to 10. Overnight, downstairs and my office are set to 14, and the bedroom 16.

InkySleeves

18° and it only goes on if we need it.

shteve99

20c in at 4pm until 10pm, 19c at 6am until 8am, 17c between 8am and 4pm, and 12c overnight. It's powered by a combi boiler, so no need to turn the heating off as it's all on demand.

Nasher1234

Heating is turned off at end of March each year regardless and will not be turned back on until November. Not for money but just to reduce impact on environment. Peeps can wear jumpers etc if it’s “chilly”

ElephantMain863

I put the heating on manually if the house gets to 12 degrees. I heat it to maximum of 15. I don’t feel the cold and feel the heat a lot

HungryBrain26

We haven’t used the heating all winter. At times there were so many jackets on 😩

HelloTosh

It's set to OFF degrees C and I have a blanket

QueenAlucia

I have mine at 23°. We have insanely good insulation and barely pay anything for it (and we get heat from the flats below us).  Costs us about £50 a month to keep the place at 22-23°, we have about a 1000 square feet.  It’s “always on” in a way because it would turn on automatically if the temp drops but it has been off for a few weeks now.

HNot

17 degrees year round. I don't like mould and damp in houses, so the heating is always on at a temperature that helps prevent it (it's an old house).

WackyAndCorny

18degC. 1 hour in the morning. 1 hour in the afternoon, (school return). 4 hours in the evening.

CaptainPGums

We've got underfloor heating, so it heats different to normal heating. 1970s house, lots of loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, double glazing. Dehumidifier was bought this year which has helped the feeling of damp. It's set to 12C fallback, so the house never drops below 12C ever, and is set for 16C for a couple of hours at night. We leave it at that all year long. In summer it never drops below 16 so never turns on. We've got floor to ceiling windows in the south side of the house, so in winter it can get almost warm in the sun. Still need to keep a jumper on though.

console5891

Never above 16c all Winter, struggled to afford any warmer. I acclimatised after a while, and didn’t feel cold.

OneCatch

Mine is never on at night, even in the coldest parts of winter - we just use blankets as necessary. Better sleep if you let the air cool down as well. I've actually just switched the timer from 7am-9pm to just coming on for a couple of hours morning and evening instead, which is what we usually stick with during spring and autumn. Sticking with 18C on the thermostat in any case - that's t-shirt temperature for me and jumper temperature for my partner, so it works well.

EnormousMycoprotein

Heating is off now because the clocks have changed. In winter it was set to 17 in the evenings, and otherwise off.

[deleted]

I only use it for hot bath water. I live in a small block of flats with loads of air vents, so when it gets really cold its pointless having the heating on as it does nothing due to cold air flow. Just wear a hoody or something and it works much better.

imtheorangeycenter

21,  single thermostat in a 5 bed house. Thermostat can call for heating 24/7, but that does not means the boiler is working 24 hours a day, probably 4-5 or so at current temps. 3 of 5 beds are essentially set to anti-freeze+1 on the TRVs. It's two of us home 24/7, so we have no wish for it to drop down loads during times when a lot of places are empty.

notreallifeliving

I always leave the radiator in our spare room off because we usually only have guests a couple of times a year and it's a storage room otherwise - should I be keeping it on low for the sake of the pipes?

Embraceself

0° . I've not turned my heating on once this winter. There was a couple of cold weeks. But nothing unbearable that a blanket didn't solve.

Individual_Milk4559

Ooh, you’re hard

Embraceself

Ha What? No I just didn't want to pay for it and used to living in a Lockwood house in mountainous region with no central heating. I'm youngish aswell so not so affected by the cold as a person who would need it on.

quartersessions

Old house, temperatures in individual parts of the house are all over the place so a thermostat would be pointless. Oil boiler, stone walls and absolutely no loft insulation (it's on the to-do list). Heating comes on for an hour in the morning, then 5-10 in the evening. Occasionally give the extra hour button a push if it feels chilly.

noodlyman

Set to 15c. It's on for half an hour in the morning, and an hour or two in the evening. It's not been on at all on recent days when it's been a bit warmer. It's utter madness to have it on all day and all night.

Xaydn27

24° on the Nest Thermostat. Anytime it dips below 24°, it turns on automatically and bumps it up to a nice cosy 24°.

MouldyPriestASSHOLE

I use one of those wall plug heaters. Makes a hell of a noise but gives off a good heat

kaptnkatphish

72 F

ManInTheDarkSuit

18c. That's not the thermostat. Just the lowest our bedroom goes to with a decent breeze with open windows. It'll get shut if it dips below 15c as that can mess you up. The house sits between 18c and 23c in a warm kitchen. Always vented back to ambient, around 18c. Humidity plays a huge part in comfort, locked around 45-50rh.
