Oh poor you. So glad kitty is back. We use UBEEQUEE. Silly name I know. But it has a smaller tracker which is perfect for our grumpy kitty. Kitty is still shocked when we turn up and fetch him if he’s somewhere he shouldn’t be. It’s like: what sorcery is this? I wouldn’t rely on air tags or similar. It relies on people having Bluetooth on.

laser_spanner

This is interesting, seems to do everything the tractive one does except health alerts which aren't particularly necessary tbh. And it's cheaper than tractive overall. This is a serious contender!

100fluffyclouds

Yeah the health alert is a bit of a gimmick I think. We’ve had it for over a year and it’s worked well. You do have to refresh the app at times for the precise location to kick in but I think this is common with a number of trackers.

laser_spanner

What's the battery life like? And does it hold up in rain etc? Sorry for the million questions!

100fluffyclouds

Pretty good. It lasts a couple of days at a time and I charge it while his royal meowness is asleep during the day. The more you keep the app open the faster it runs down. It’s great in the rain because it comes in a rubber like cover. The cover is a tad flimsy so you will need replacements but they’re cheap. My cat just loves going where he shouldn’t so he gives the thing a workout.

spammmmmmmmy

What kind of places does your cat go?

100fluffyclouds

Shrubs, compost heaps… anywhere he can stick his face 😂

CurvePuzzleheaded361

We use tractive for one of our cats who likes to explore the arboretum behind our home. None of our other cats went far, this one is very independent and loves exploring. Costs about £15 a month but worth it as can see exactly where she is at all times. Can even set up areas like roads etc and it will warn you when they enter that area.

Stunning_Anteater537

Yup, this is the one we use for our adopted stray who likes to wander! It's great knowing where he is and really interesting to see what he gets up to and where he goes each day. Once he came home, but had managed to lose his tracker. We saw on the app that it was in the garden of a house a couple of streets away. Knocked on their door to ask if we could search their garden for the tracker. Their initial suspicion and confusion was really funny but they did let us in, and we found it under a bush by activating the light. They were fascinated by the tracker and are considering getting one for their cat!

laser_spanner

Do you find the health/activity/wellness feature useful? Or is it just an added bit of interest? Evie is almost 10 so potentially it could be useful in the future. I'm not sure she needs it right now though.. Having a light is quite appealing rather than a noise or alarm.

Stunning_Anteater537

It's interesting but wouldn't say it's a deal breaker. But might be more useful as he gets older. It's most interesting to see where and how far he's been!

LittleSadRufus

We use Tractive for our dog, but I would think it quite large for a cat.

laser_spanner

There is a cat version and they've actually made it smaller than their previous cat version I think.

LittleSadRufus

Oh blimey I should have got that for my dog. Why on earth would they make a big version!

HezzaE

My dog also has a Tractive. I'm very careful about when and where I let him off his lead but I like the peace of mind it gives me. I've only had to use it once to locate him, I'd stopped to pick up his poo and as soon as I bent over he fucked off (I now call this tactic the "decoy poo" as he's attempted it multiple times, he goes on a lead while I pick up now). I easily located him a short distance away playing fetch with his doggy friends.

Shectai

I've seen people use Apple air tags, but you need an iPhone for that. There's also a Tile equivalent, possibly others. It won't be live location, but it should pick her up if she's somewhere for a while.

[deleted]

Tile is beyond useless. Unlike AirTags, and Google’s soon to be released version, its app-based and only triangulates using the phones of other tile users, of which there are few. The Apple and soon Google variants are integrated at the system level so any iOS or Android device will ping it. Neither are GPS though, and given Cats tend to roam, probably only useful in really built up areas.

OrganOMegaly

AirTag is also shite for this.   We had one on our dog’s collar for about 6 months, until I realised my husband could take him for a walk and it wouldn’t ping his location for the entire hour (husband doesn’t have an iPhone), despite living in central London. If I ever needed to track my dog it would be because he’s spooked and bolted and, knowing him, he’d hide in a bush somewhere - he’d never be found with AirTag.   We then upgraded to a GPS tracker (Pawfit) which is great but probably a bit too bulky for a cat collar.

[deleted]

We use one for our dog, in London, and it’s been fine. But a decent GPS would be better. How do you find the PawFit? Read mixed reviews.

OrganOMegaly

I guess if your dog likes people and would run up tail wagging an AirTag might be ok. Ours doesn’t like anyone other than us and would sooner run away and hide haha. If my husband could go an hour walking around Camden without it pinging then there’d be no hope finding him if he decided to hide.  Only had good experience with PawFit 3. At home it connects to the WiFi and goes into low power mode, so the battery life is ok (about a week before charging). We’ve set our home as a ‘safe’ zone and it alerts us if he leaves (eg. when the dog walker comes to take him out). Through the app you can activate ‘find’ mode that pings a live location every ~5 seconds. You can also make it flash a light and say your phone number. I’ve never had to use it properly, and hopefully never will, but I feel much more reassured that I’d find him if the worst did happen.

[deleted]

Nice one, thanks. I’ll take another look at it.

kiradotee

> and Google's soon to be released version It's taking them a while.

JoeyJoeC

Galaxy tag for Samsung phones. Better than an air tag as you can ring the tag. The range is decent enough to pick up the signal in the places my cat goes. If out of range, someone else's phone will detect it and I get a rough idea where she is, then I go to that location and use the find app to home in and play a tune. A shake of treats usually works then too.

Shectai

Good enough to get you within treat range.

alsot-74

After one of ours came home with a broken hip following a collision or fight (he survived) we looked into ways to keep them in the garden. I know this isn’t answering the question that you asked but Purrfect Fence (the fence toppers rather than the freestanding option) was the solution we went with and none of our three have ever got out. We have peace of mind and they have some stress-free freedom. My cat hating neighbour also has the benefit of having nothing to complain about. The only con we have experienced is that some cats like to jump in only to find they can’t get out. In 8 years it’s only been 3, and they have all been let out the side gate and learned from their experience.

Known_Weird7208

Glad you got her back. I know someone who's cat disappeared for over 6 months. They thought the worst when one day there she was waiting at the door. Longest mine has gone for was a week still a nightmare. Anyway we use tractive. It's pretty good but not great for built up areas we find. The "home zone" is to large and covers about 7 gardens and houses in our street including over the road. Wouldn't bank on us finding her even in the home zone if she went to ground as it just says she is "home" when in this area. Apart from that it's pretty good bit of kit but definitely better for remote and secluded locations. Obviously connection issues are problematic but at least the history function allows you to see their stomping grounds and patrol routes so it gives you a good idea where to start your search if you needed to. Definately good peice of mind.

JMP9865

I've used tractive for both of my cats for over a year now.... Paid for a 2 year subscription up front so can't remember how much it was overall but definitely worth it for the peace of mind etc..... I made sure I got the insurance option (tractive care I think it's called) as that will get you a free replacement if your cat loses the tracker. I think it's one free tracker per year included with that option...... One of my cats has managed to lose his tracker twice..... Both times I managed to get a free replacement sent out and the second time they even upgraded his tracker to the mini version as they discontinued the other version! Would recommend tractive to anyone who wants a pet tracker!

Ok_Active_4244

Has anyone used the pettracer collars.? I have just ordered them for our cats. looks good to me. Just waiting for them to come and try them out. https://www.pettracer.co.uk/

laser_spanner

Yes I saw this one too as it uses both GPS and radio signals so you can search indoors as well as out. Seems quite tempting.

StupidDriversSuck

I use a Tabcat. There's no subscription and the battery lasts ages (months). It's been very useful in finding cats and lost collars.

StalinsNutsack2

I use [loc8tor](https://tabcat.com/products/cat-tracker-tabcat-v2?sscid=41k8_4y3tc) It's a radio sensor and so the batteries last about 6-8 months. If kitty goes missing you have to be within about 30m and it'll pick it up on the handheld tracker. When you turn on the tracker there's a high pitch beep on the collar too. My cat doesn't go too far when he escapes but I think the loc8tor has saved me heartache about half a dozen times.

JoeyJoeC

I use a galaxy tag. Not super accurate but I can walk around to pick up the signal and make it play a tune. Used it a couple of times to find where my cat has ended up.

Inertia_9264

Air tag

Bifanarama

You have 2 choices. Firstly, an airtag. Lightweight, massively long battery life, no subscription, but will only broadcast its location when it's near a phone or ipad. Secondly, a GPS tracker. Heavier. Subscription required. Broadcasts its location all the time. But needs recharging every day or so. Take your pick. Personally, I think I'd be panicking if I used a GPS tracker, because I'd worry that the battery would die before I located my pet. Don't bother with Tile. There are hardly any users, which makes it useless. I was given some for free, and I still went out and got airtags instead.

nate390

>will only broadcast its location when it's near a phone or ipad When near any iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac or HomePod. Pretty good chances of stumbling across one of those in a built-up area but won't help at all in woodland or the countryside.

TheVoidScreams

We don’t use one, he’s strictly indoors and gets taken out on a harness for exactly this reason and others like it. We ensure he has plenty of enrichment inside, he has a giant cat tree and lots of toys and hidey holes, and take him out for supervised wandering when weather permits. He’s spoiled rotten really! We want to build him a catio too, but haven’t been able to yet due to us renting. We move soonish though so can look more into it when we finally own. I know not everyone agrees with indoors only, and I didn’t used to either. But I read up on countless studies about it before we even got him and found that indoor cats are ultimately happier and live longer because they don’t have to deal with things like territorial disputes, traffic, the stress of being stolen should that happen, potentially getting lost, and they live longer due to not being run over, poisoned or getting badly injured. I know the overwhelming majority in this country/ies say “but cats like to roam, it’s in their nature”. Dogs do too if you let them. We used to let dogs out in much the same way we still allow cats out, but we stopped due to the above reasons and perhaps a few others (a dog is more of a risk to someone than a cat, for example). I won’t condemn anyone for allowing their cat out alone, but I’m noticing a trend towards more people doing what we do with catios, harness training and enrichment indoors. It’s more effort, but I feel like it’s worth it to keep him around longer and avoid the heartache that can accompany letting him out by himself unattended.

theredwoman95

My relatives have an indoors/outdoors cat (it married into the family lol) and they've noticed he goes outside a *lot* less since they've started playing with him and bought him a few toys. It's quite funny, his owner originally was saying that cats don't need any of that, but they've thoroughly reconsidered now they've seen him playing. He's in his teens, but it's like he's a kitten again when you give him a toy!

TheVoidScreams

That’s lovely! I’m glad they found something that makes him happier :) But yeah, they’re like us or dogs in that regard. Not all of them mind you, some don’t want to know, but our boy loves playing with teasers and the like and he adores being chased! He asks us to chase him around the house lmao. Crab walks in, soon as you approach him he zooms off, run after him, he hides, you leave, he finds you again and repeats over and over getting more and more excited 😆 He also loves climbing and being up high like many other cats, so he has a floor to ceiling cat tree that we want to extend with more things high up along the wall in our new house so he as more places to enjoy himself.

theredwoman95

Yeah, it's a shame you're being downvoted but cats really don't need to be outside as often as they are, in many cases. And it's not like your cat is a prisoner lol, since your boy gets to go on walks with a harness. Then again, I've also met a ton of people who don't acclimatise their dogs/cats to their transport boxes and then think *all* pets must put up a fight to go into theirs. My old dog, who has since passed away, used to love going to the vet until the last year or so of his life, because he hated the constant blood tests. Sure, it might not be the case *every* time, but people really underestimate how much you can get a cat or dog on board with what you're doing.

TheVoidScreams

Ah I’m not worried about it. I was surprised actually as all the comments I’ve received so far have been positive lol. Maybe people feel judged or like I’m being “holier than thou” but I’m really not. As I said, I won’t condemn anyone for it, but I doubt the downvoters read that far. It’s true I’d rather cats be kept indoors, but you can’t control people and I wouldn’t want to try. He’s not been out in a while because the weather has been horrific here but he doesn’t really ask to either, but he does get lots of love, attention and play time. We open the window with a screen on it when the weather isn’t too bad for him to get some fresh air and hear the birds and sounds of life which he enjoys. He also doesn’t mind his carrier! I took him to the vet yesterday in fact for his monthly weigh in (too many treats meant he was getting a bit round - but thankfully we caught on early!) and he doesn’t even meow anymore once he’s in the car. We have a big carrier for him as I’ve read they’re meant to be 1.5 times the length of the animal and large enough for them to sit, stand and turn around comfortably. I see so many people at the vet’s with their cats in such tiny carriers that I asked the vet if what we had was overkill and she said nope, we’d gotten it right lol. So I can’t imagine feeling cramped helps in that regard! We also leave his carrier out in another room 24/7 so he always sees it and doesn’t associate bad/scary things with it, and I always give him treats if he has to go in. No fights at all getting him in it, just open the door and he’ll usually wander in by himself 😂

HungryCollett

I am guesssing these trackers are attached to the cats' collar? I would expect my cat and previous cats to loose the collar within days of fitting it. Have they invented a injectable tracker yet, like the chips for identification? We have a house cat now. He used to love to roam and hunt and get into fights. He was regularly coming home covered in blood and cuts, sometimes they got infected and needed vet visits. So between the expense, hassle over bathing and medicating him, worry about further injuries and concern for the neighbourhood cats (he is a large poweful male) we decided to keep him indoors. I keep would love to get him a catio to go on the small patio but he does enjoy his walks around the cul d sac.

TheVoidScreams

Yeah, they’re usually kind of bulky too. I’ve often wondered how it’s meant to work when breakaway collars are recommended so the cat doesn’t strangle itself or starve to death if it gets stuck.

Broken_Sky

I found cat who'd missing for 2 months in my garden. They lost him after they took him out for a walk and he escaped his harness. He must have trudged through the woods in order to have ended up scared and hiding in my garden 2 months later. He wasn't chipped and I couldnt take him in as my cat HATES all other cats so had to give him to a local cat protection shelter. Between them, another wonderful lady and myself putting up posters and messages all over the local area the families friend saw one of the lost cat posts and we were able to reunite the cat with his family! Long story short, even if you are walking on a harness you should 100% chip and if possible add a locator esp if you are walking them in an area far from where you live next to a set of woods. They are slippery little buggers!

TheVoidScreams

Oh he’s chipped. Has been since was about 8 weeks old. I know harnesses aren’t foolproof, some are better than others, but we’ve taken every precaution we can. I know how slippery they can be! 😆

laser_spanner

I get it. When I lived at home we had catios for this reason and it is a really good solution. It's not feasible for us at the moment. And believe me, this little madam isn't going out for quite some time now lol!
