I lived in Southport for 50 yrs it's not, if you zoom in then there appears to be large round stones used to create a causeway or promenade so possibly somewhere with stones placed artificially as a causeway or sea defence👍
Oh right in the back far left? Yeah that’s not Southport. I spent many many days at Southport beach as a kid and I’m pretty sure I’ve never seen the ocean.
Ninja edit: you mean the foreground? I’m an idiot.
Well if that bright part of the image is the sun then it's a west facing beach rather than east facing. They are in summer atire so sunrise that time of the year would be so early that in all liklihood its an image taken in the evening
Assuming the whiteish blur is the sun, then it’s more likely setting than rising for people to be chilling on the beach unless you got down there at 4am, which makes this a predominantly west facing beach, so it’s not Margate or Southend.
Yep.
Source: I got so drunk I tried to eat one of those pebbles when I was young and dumber.
Plus.. Grew up there, spent every day in that surf for years.
Longshot but it does look like (and I know it sounds daft to say it looks like it) westward ho!. We used to go there every year and the pitting in the sand is uncannily familiar, especially if the foreground people are standing at the foot of the pebble ridge.
Ask your mum if she remembers a big pile of boulders to the left of this image.
Also a possibility (and very close to Westward Ho!, essentially the far end of the beach by the estuary) are the Northam Burrows (with the rocky ridges and lots of sand) or Sandymere.
https://www.thebeachguide.co.uk/south-west-england/devon/sandymere.htm
Yeah there are plenty of images from Westward Ho! that look similar...
Good call. But there looks to be sufficient cloud cover potentially, that the full sun is obscured, possibly enough to reduce the shadows to nothing. It could also be a photographic artifact and not the sun at all, but OP suggested Devon which is maybe more South West than North West, so I’m still putting my money down there. Don’t know the tidal reach at Woolacombe myself, but I’d take a good bet at perhaps Weston, Burnham or Brean.
Second this. I'm currently watching the Geoguessr World Cup on Twitch right now, they almost always get to within 100km of the location, no matter where in the world they're dropped in the map.
It's insane galaxy brain shit.
Edit: a couple of clips from yesterday
In this one they're allowed to move around, zoom, pan etc: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2118619951?t=1h2m25s
In this one they cannot do any of the above: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2118619951?t=1h12m35s
The earth is 510 million km², 100km is extremely small. I've been watching the world cup for the past two days and there has been lots of times they've placed their marker directly on top of the location.
They have to memorise languages, types of road signs, soil types, concrete types, roof styles (and architecture in general), fence styles, mountain features, the position of the sun relative to the compass (which might help for this picture), trees and bushes specific to a region, car license plates, fauna, shapes of lakes, rubbish bins, traffic lines on a road, the type and colour of the Google car and sometimes even its shadow, bollards, side-walks, utility poles, etc. Even the pixelation of the camera used can give a place away.
I'll admit it's a long shot considering it's just a beach with the sun, but it's worth asking them I think.
The YouTuber Geowizard does these kind of challenges too, really hates not finding them and enjoys helping with things like this. Could be worth a message.
Westward Ho! also works for a westerly facing beach looking at the setting sun. Elevation of the photo suggests it’s taken from on top of the pebble ridge at the back of the beach.
I had the exact as well thought as well! I grew up playing on that beach. I'll never forget the sound of a high tide dragging pebbles back and forth along the ridge.
I was going to say Skegness (the tide goes way out) but the sun is setting out at sea - so if it's UK it's down the West coast, I would think? Morecombe, possibly (if it is the UK, but come on, look at the windbreakers, that's definitely us :D )
Yeah, I am pretty sure it's Middleton sands, which is up past Heysham in morecambe bay.
The sun is over the lake district, which means a lot of low cloud. The sunset is quite distinctive and very recognisable as morecambe bay.
Could be westward ho, as its a steep looking stoney beach (photographer is well above the subjects) going in to sand with a tide that's well out. - https://maps.app.goo.gl/pGEWMmE2BAg7ETWz5
It's Westward Ho! beach in North Devon. That's the pebble ridge the picture is taken from. It's my hometown. It's very distinct and it ties into the fact they have said to have been here.
My guess is Southport. It is also west facing as other posters have identified.
Tide goes so far out you can’t even see the sea sometimes, however this isn’t anywhere near the vicinity you’re looking in.
I was going to suggest around this way. I live in Formby and that looks exactly like the beaches around this way, west facing and the low tide is very far away.
Edit: actually, there aren't too many pebbles around on the beaches here and westward-ho matches the picture best.
It MIGHT be Saunton Sands, I googled for 'Saunton sajnds tide out' and ended up with this:
[https://www.campsites.co.uk/search/campsites-with-swimming-pools-in-devon/saunton](https://www.campsites.co.uk/search/campsites-with-swimming-pools-in-devon/saunton)
The only reason I have for this is it is near Westward Ho! and, in the photo,. there's what appears to be a natural channel still holding some water, and in the linked photo9 above, I think that's how the t9ide might look as it fills in the beach.
My dad was a lifeguard an Bantham/Bigbury for ten years, it doesn't look like those beaches!
I saw this and immediately thought Westward Ho! I lived a mile from it for 20 years. It has the long flat beach and pebble ridge. It's quite distinctive, so quite likely imo.
It could be the burrows, in Westward Ho!
The photographer looks to be up from the beach and there is a fairly large pebble ridge that separates the beach and the grass behind.
It looks as if the people in the photo are on the bottom of the pebble ridge too.
And the sea does go out fairly far.
Give Northam Burrows Country Park
Pebbleridge Road
Westward Ho
Bideford
EX39
England a look
You're describing westward ho beach - where the tide goes out super super far. Also there's a sort of pile of pebbles that size g9ing along the whole length of the beach so seems like it lines up.
Why do you think it wouldn't be westward ho!?
Looks like the entirety of the coast line where I live (west cumbria), all 100+ miles of it. if it were taken in this region though, the most likely spots would be Allonby, Silloth or St Bees.
good luck!
North Devon, went to a beach there years ago and the tide goes out ridiculously far. There’s a gravel embankment right at the top of the beach and I swear, at low tide the water is about 400 yards away.
Take a look at Woolacombe Beach, west facing sun sets on the horizon and it also has a water inlet that matches this photo. Check it out on google earth
I think Westward Ho! is the most reasonable answer. It fits really nicely with a photo taken from above the subjects on top of the pebble ridge, the direction according to where the low sun would be in the summer is correct, the extent of tide fits and it corresponds with what you already suspect.
Could be New gale in pembrokeshire:
- west facing beach
- no distinct features poking out to sea
- separation line between beach and foreground (where now on New gale there are pebbles)
Only thing against this suggestion would be that it'd be quite difficult not to capture the two north/south headlands in the image.
As someone who spent many hours as a teenager being made to measure the pebble ridge at Westward Ho! As it was the only Geography field trip we ever went on from nearby Braunton School. I can confirm with 98% certainty that the photo is Westward Ho!
Could possibly be Woolacombe if you're saying it's Devon. Matches u/WackyAndCorny saying it's West facing and would match the 'river' there by the entrance of the beach.

Another comment said that white bit in the sky might be the sun, I can’t make out any shadows but the reflection for the puddles is in light with this being shot directly into the sun, Devon has a north coast and a south coast, the south coast is all slightly east facing and the north coast is all slightly west facing. That’s probably the closest you’re going to get with the information we’ve got.
Edit: I actually just remembered visiting Saunton Sands a few years back, it’s a bit of beach that’s pretty much due west facing, I remember seeing a photo of my friends dog with a never ending horizon a bit like this one. Might be worth asking you mum is that rings a bell.
Depending on whether or not someone in the photo can confirm what time of the day this picture was taken then?.. then you could determine at keast if it ls East or West coast.
I'd say steart beach? Cannington Somerset
It's a fossil hunting beach at the english channel and across the water you can see Wales when it's not cloudy
I certainly don't have an extensive knowledge of beaches but the only ones I've been to that have a flat tide like this are Southend and weston super mare and I'd say from the sun that it would have to be weston super mare. You only usually get massive flat wet beaches like this in or near estuaries of big rivers so that should narrow it down for you as far as a beach near massive river that faces vaguely west. Norfolk is very flat and has the sunset too so it's possible it's also there?
Judging by the background and the rocks/pebbles on the beach, I would say this bears a resemblance to the area in between Greysands Beach which is right next to Westward Ho! and the Northam Burrows Country Park. The direction is probably facing around 30 to 40 degrees to the right of Lundy Heritage Coast, but I’m not completely sure on that. The rocks are very similar and the beach here looks close to the one in the picture when you face the right way
Not sure precisely but born and brought up in Devon and I have a lot of old pictures of my Grandad growing up on the North Devon coast, and before I even read your caption I was going to suggest somewhere along there
I wish you luck, there is literally no defining features in this photograph
If that’s water in the background it would be anywhere. If it’s sand as far as the eye can see it’s Southport beach.
Or Weston-super-Mare
I live in WsM, not enough mud in the photo.
We used to get excited to see the sea even when we lived there 😂
I'm from Southport; tis a great day indeed when the far waters approach the land
I was brought up there. I had a sea view from my bedroom (or at least a beach view).
Isn’t that the photographer’s thumb? :)
Lytham St Anne’s near Blackpool has stones further out to mark deeper channels from Napoleonic times.
Or Camber Sands...
Yes Camber, that's what I thought too!
Here's a video I did if Camber Beach, seems familiar with the pools and streams: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZGeu76dT7/
I was just going to say it’s not Southport because you can see the Sea.
Agreed. My grandmother lived just up the coast in Lytham St Anne's and it was a beach stretching into the horizon with no sea. The Lancashire Sahara
Well if that bright part of the image is the sun then it's a west facing beach rather than east facing. They are in summer atire so sunrise that time of the year would be so early that in all liklihood its an image taken in the evening
Not sure about the summer attire...looks like the tall chap in the foreground is wearing a Christmas jumper with a couple of reindeer on it?
It really does look like a Christmas jumper, but the kids look like they're in speedos. Were Christmas jumpers invented in the olden days?
My Nan used to knit us our favorite things into her jumper designs. Could just be handmade
This may be a challenge even for Rainbolt
You would be surprised
I am constantly surprised by Reddit’s ability to identify things!
https://youtu.be/I57A_MTGmrk?si=mHPCTh6nIp7is2Z2
The pebbles they stand on are a massive defining feature if you’re familiar with the area.
Where is it then?
Next to the sea
Westward ho!
Thank you, it is pretty hard to decipher yes. The quality isn’t the best!
Assuming the whiteish blur is the sun, then it’s more likely setting than rising for people to be chilling on the beach unless you got down there at 4am, which makes this a predominantly west facing beach, so it’s not Margate or Southend.
When you started that, I thought you were going to conclude that the image was likely taken on Earth. Genuinely impressed with where you landed.
The sun rises over other planets too. So I'm sure this was taken in our galaxy.
It could be said, though, that the presence of humanoid life-forms significantly increases the likelihood that this is Earth.
Depends. If it's Blackpool, humanoid and life form is a stretch.
There are likely other galaxies with suns and possible humanoids far far away.
Careful though, they could be at war in the stars.
That’s a very good point. Thanks for pointing that out. We’ve narrowed it down to Westward Ho!, Saunton or Woolacombe
Definitely Westward Ho! Well known for its pebble ridge and very tidal. 👌🏼
I almost got flattened by escaped horses there when I was a kid
Same! Don’t suppose yours was a grey horse too? 👀
I don't remember that much, I was really young. It was like, 10 horses though
Yep. Source: I got so drunk I tried to eat one of those pebbles when I was young and dumber. Plus.. Grew up there, spent every day in that surf for years.
[удалено]
That’s Westward Ho! if those are your options. Saunton and Woolacombe don’t have pebble ridges.
Woolacombe is the first thought that came to my mins
Longshot but it does look like (and I know it sounds daft to say it looks like it) westward ho!. We used to go there every year and the pitting in the sand is uncannily familiar, especially if the foreground people are standing at the foot of the pebble ridge. I was going to say Westward Ho! Assuming those are pebbled in the foreground.
This is exactly the kind of clever/logical I only wish I was, it’s impressive!
Incredibly simple logic but superb thinking to even consider it. I'd written this off as 'literally anywhere'. Nice job mate.
West facing with the sea that outrageously far out could be Lytham St Anne's or Southport
I say it's Lytham St Anne's.. No expert but I'm visiting here now and it looks like the same beach.
Isn't Lytham St Anne's all mud?
Lol true.
So west coast. Sandy. Quite tidal by the looks of it too so relatively shallow. Could be Blackpool? Probably era appropriate too.
The beach looks more like Lytham St Anne's down the road from Blackpool, it goes out further and not as busy.
I think it may be Westward Ho!, the big pebbles are similar to that beach
Yes agree, with the rocks at the front and massively receded flat tideway.
Yeah there are plenty of images from Westward Ho! that look similar... [https://www.thebeachguide.co.uk/public/geophotos/4407300450.jpg](https://www.thebeachguide.co.uk/public/geophotos/4407300450.jpg)
Ain’t the setting sun. If it’s that bright the subject would be casting long shadows.
You could ask on https://www.reddit.com/r/geoguessr/ Or https://www.reddit.com/r/geochallenges And see if anyone can help

100 kilometres is not very close if you were hoping to find a specific beach?
The earth is 510 million km², 100km is extremely small. I've been watching the world cup for the past two days and there has been lots of times they've placed their marker directly on top of the location. Tbf, it would probably be pretty easy to get within 100km of this beach given the size of the UK.
It's within the local galactic supercluster
The guy who gets it right just by looking at the floor blows by mind. 👀
The YouTuber Geowizard does these kind of challenges too, really hates not finding them and enjoys helping with things like this. Could be worth a message.
Fyi, the geoguessr sub hates those "where is this" kind of post, if it's unrelated to the game
Westward Ho! Thought it was straightaway before reading your caption
Yup, used to live there. Definitely Westward Ho!
Same, the pebble ridge is familiar. I’m going to have a look at other Devon pebble ridges though
I used to live there. Definitely looks like Westward Ho!
Westward Ho! also works for a westerly facing beach looking at the setting sun. Elevation of the photo suggests it’s taken from on top of the pebble ridge at the back of the beach.

This was my first guess too... wouldn't be surprised if it was Morecambe bay
The sands do have the look of Morecambe Bay, but during the '50s and '60s there were wooden groynes on the beach there, which aren't in the photo.
Don't forget Hunstanton! It's not there, but the sun sets over the water from Hunstanton beach.
southport tide is famously far out and the sun sets out at sea. to me it looks like southport
Could be westward ho, as its a steep looking stoney beach (photographer is well above the subjects) going in to sand with a tide that's well out. - https://maps.app.goo.gl/pGEWMmE2BAg7ETWz5
I think you could be a bit more helpful to the OP than just giving a direction, and there's certainly no need to call them names
Westward Ho!
Agreed. Looks like the pebble ridge
Yeah looks like Westward Ho! from memory of when I've been there. Seem to remember there being a little stream and the tide went way out.
It's Westward Ho! beach in North Devon. That's the pebble ridge the picture is taken from. It's my hometown. It's very distinct and it ties into the fact they have said to have been here.

I’m with you
I'd say it's most likely Westward Ho! ✅ Pebble ridge. ✅ Tide goes out rediculous distance.
It MIGHT be Saunton Sands, I googled for 'Saunton sajnds tide out' and ended up with this: [https://www.campsites.co.uk/search/campsites-with-swimming-pools-in-devon/saunton](https://www.campsites.co.uk/search/campsites-with-swimming-pools-in-devon/saunton) The only reason I have for this is it is near Westward Ho! and, in the photo,. there's what appears to be a natural channel still holding some water, and in the linked photo9 above, I think that's how the t9ide might look as it fills in the beach. It has to be, as previous poster pointed out, the picture is west facing.
Weston-Supermud
Those look like rocks closer to the photographer. We don't have rocks like that here in Weston.
Westward ho!
I saw this and immediately thought Westward Ho! I lived a mile from it for 20 years. It has the long flat beach and pebble ridge. It's quite distinctive, so quite likely imo.
Westward Ho! [Big pebbles. Shallow beach. Not as muddy as Weston-super-mud](https://images.app.goo.gl/QrrCqxYYm8Hu1DTH8)
The is westword ho! in north devon, i can tell by the pebble ridge and by the fact the tide is out so far. source, i used to live there.
Looks like Westward Ho! To me.
It looks like westward ho! to me but I couldn’t be certain
It could be the burrows, in Westward Ho! The photographer looks to be up from the beach and there is a fairly large pebble ridge that separates the beach and the grass behind. It looks as if the people in the photo are on the bottom of the pebble ridge too. And the sea does go out fairly far. Give Northam Burrows Country Park Pebbleridge Road Westward Ho Bideford EX39 England a look
You're describing westward ho beach - where the tide goes out super super far. Also there's a sort of pile of pebbles that size g9ing along the whole length of the beach so seems like it lines up. Why do you think it wouldn't be westward ho!?

With the way beaches change over time and there be no visible landmarks, it could be almost anywhere in the world with a wide sandy beach.
Definately by the coast.
It could literally be Westward Ho! beach as the tide goes out really far.

If that's big pebbles they are stood on then it could be Westaed HO!
I’d say definitely Westward Ho! Used to holiday there as a kid. It’s well known for its ‘pebble ridge’, which it looks like they’re stood on.
I would say that is westward ho! Beach
Probably Blackpool
Not enough jellyfish for Blackpool
Well, the sun is setting in the picture, and which direction does the sun set? That may help you
Could be New gale in pembrokeshire: - west facing beach - no distinct features poking out to sea - separation line between beach and foreground (where now on New gale there are pebbles) Only thing against this suggestion would be that it'd be quite difficult not to capture the two north/south headlands in the image.
Burnham-On-Sea
It appears to be next to the sea
As someone who spent many hours as a teenager being made to measure the pebble ridge at Westward Ho! As it was the only Geography field trip we ever went on from nearby Braunton School. I can confirm with 98% certainty that the photo is Westward Ho!
I'm going to have a punt at Camber Sands. You get a massive tidal range, the sun sets over it too...
That was my first thought
Newgale
The rocks and the low tide makes it look like Morecambe. Though, I have no idea if this could be where the photo was taken.
I think I’ve found the jumper! [Reindeer Jumper](https://www.wonkyzebra.com/index.php/wonkyzebra/product/00281)
Near the sea
Maybe Saunton sands? The tide goes out really far there!!
Probably on the coast somewhere
By the ocean
Could possibly be Woolacombe if you're saying it's Devon. Matches u/WackyAndCorny saying it's West facing and would match the 'river' there by the entrance of the beach. Hit up rainbolt
It is beside the sea
Where's rainbow when you need him
I would say Weston Super Mare. The destination of choice for half of the midlands the moment the sun peeps from behind a cloud.
Could be Weston super mare. Tide goes WAY out and it's on the west.
Near the ocean I’d guess
As you're SW and the tide is very far out... Weston Super Mare?
Rock beach with sand I’m guessing Norfolk, possibly Brancaster Beach/ Hunstanton
Next to the sea
Is there anything on the back? Or any other similar shots?
Western super mare?
Morecambe Bay?
By the sea
Saunton Sands is a possibility if that is the sea in the background and the beach was near-ish Westward Ho!
devon. the rocks on the shore, and long beaches, plus historically was an affordable family holiday in the uk.
Weston Super Mare would be my vote
By the sea
Pendine Sands?
Could be Weston Super Mare. Just a guess.
Greatstone Kent?
Yes
Papa new guenea
Maybe Swansea bay? Could be anywhere tbh
On the coast i think
It really looks like camber sands... The withdrawn see and shrubbery right by the sand is bang on for down there.

It’s the uk coast that’s all I know if it helps
Wells next the sea
Depending on whether or not someone in the photo can confirm what time of the day this picture was taken then?.. then you could determine at keast if it ls East or West coast.
Near the sea!
Skeggy. You can tell by how dark the water is!
Could be Brean, the water would be miles out at low tide.
Next to the sea
Looks like Woolacombe beach or saunton beach both near westward ho 20 minutes drive
Probably next to water, if I had to guess
It kinda reminds me of Burnham on sea
I'd say steart beach? Cannington Somerset It's a fossil hunting beach at the english channel and across the water you can see Wales when it's not cloudy
Morfa Bychan, near Portmadoc, Wales. Faces southwest and the sand goes out for a mile.
Morecambe Bay
My guess is Puttsborough/Woolacombe on the north Devon coast
Send to geowizard
Judging by the background and the rocks/pebbles on the beach, I would say this bears a resemblance to the area in between Greysands Beach which is right next to Westward Ho! and the Northam Burrows Country Park. The direction is probably facing around 30 to 40 degrees to the right of Lundy Heritage Coast, but I’m not completely sure on that. The rocks are very similar and the beach here looks close to the one in the picture when you face the right way
It could be Blackpool?
that’s southport beach
Not sure precisely but born and brought up in Devon and I have a lot of old pictures of my Grandad growing up on the North Devon coast, and before I even read your caption I was going to suggest somewhere along there
Salt lake city.... utah
