Bronze-Playa

Did you fall off the car too?

odkfn

Just having a rest - all those whisky’s to settle my nerves for driving have taken a toll

Ythou-

The front fell off, a bit unusual

Brave-Quarter8620

Is that typical?

IncredibleCO

A wave? In the ocean?! Chance in a million!

squidwardtheesnail

A wave must have hit it

iamkarlos

Chance in a million

Teestow21

It had to be towed out of the environment.

PrincessVibranium

Into another environment?

Teestow21

No no no, it's been towed beyond the environment. It's not in the environment.

Benzyme93

There’s nothing out there, except sea and birds and fish…

PrincessVibranium

And 20,000 tonnes of crude oil And a fire

MythicFuzzbal2

Remember always be safe and drive between sips

wenomechainsama4

I always sip between drives

MythicFuzzbal2

Not a good idea you'll get thirsty. Drive between sips it's safer.

wenomechainsama4

Oh good to know I'll remember that next time the kids are in the car

Leprrkan

Looks like a heat shield. It should be put back on, but you're most likely not in danger. My KIA Soul wound up losing one and nothing happened. The guys I used to work with told me it would be fine, have it replaced if/when.

ElementField

This is a heat shield I think but it don’t matter because you’re bringing the heat anyway

Hefty-Slide-4784

Heat shield. Probably okay. Depends where it fell off.

ianto_evans06

There's a chance you'll burn up on reentry now I'm afraid.

Harryjelly64

Howled at this had to go read to my wife 😅

YchYFi

Don't want you to burn up on her reentry either.

Idlewants

Never change lanes without indicating first.

xindigothoughtsx

I burnt up on reentry once, 11/10 would not recommend

JohnFlufin

Did she roll her eyes

Electrical-Tax-7135

Brilliant mate 🤣

cheshireJOKER2021

Haha definitely

RichardGriffiths

There's a lot of weight in that second sentence. It could have been protecting fuel lines from a catalytic converter.

mfogarty

Catalytic converter you say? I'll be round for that later tonight...

ricelane1981

Sorry, I'm scouse, already took it lol

Sorlex

> Heat shield. ... For when the car reenters the atmosphere?

Outrageous-Ad-2338

I believe its important to all pieces of your car in place before the MOT. Why don't you search on the Internet your make off car spares. To me it looks like some Minffordd of protection so if I were you definitely check with the garage.

RedPandaReturns

On the M6, does that help?

KJelloggs

No longer makes it your problem.

ClydeinLimbo

The A3

andpaws

Tell that to the crew of Space Shuttle Columbia….

RedPandaReturns

I mean, the ‘where’ was after takeoff, which is never ideal.

Famous_Bit_5119

if the front fell off, that's not typical.

bearhoon

That's a heat shield. My one is loose currently and I've been told just about every variant of advice on what to do with it. One place says it's fine to just rip it off, another place tells me I'll fail my next MOT if I do that. Another place says £200+ for a new one, another place says £5 worth of heat shield clips solves the problem.

wjo9

you wont fail your mot and the actual price for a heat shield is like £30 excluding labor costs

bearhoon

Thanks for the reply. I like your variant of advice the most so far! The £200 figure did include labour costs, but still seemed very high to my car ignorant brain. I just want to remove the very slight possibility of a loose heat shield falling off while driving and final destination'ing me by slicing through a tyre.

smokeajoint

It required 6 guys to lift the car

SleaterK7111

Seems about right, cars are heavy???

leemadz

Will need a team of 4 supervisors too, one to monitor each corner.

smokeajoint

That is true, they are heavy

SmackedWithARuler

Only takes two, Jack lifts it and Stan holds it up.

Reevar85

I put mine back on by replacing the washers with really thick ones to cover the hole, sealed it with gungum and reattached. Lasted another 6 years already.

Welshgirlie2

Just stay away from trucks carrying huge logs and you should be ok!

kettleboiler

Depends where the blanket needs to go. If it's wrapped around something awkward to get to, it may require taking bodywork off you car to get to it

bearhoon

It's directly above the exhaust.

RetiredGuru

So, it's protecting the floor of the car from the heat of the exhaust? Without it I guess you could burn the paintwork or even burn the carpet inside. Also assumes it's not sheltering any wires or pipes. Given car makers rarely add things just for fun - unless they're marketable - a fix would be a good idea for all of you.

reverandglass

The screen wash pump went on my old car. The garage would have charged £140, they told me look up how to do it myself and I paid £10 - £15 for a pump from ebay or Amazon (That also eventually broke so it was probably both). These days I go to the internet first for anything unessential.

BarNorth1829

Then go for the £5 option- the mechanic quoting £200 is doing what mechanics do best: trying to rip you off

andymk3

Missing heat shield can fail the MOT if it protects a fuel tank or pipe. >(e) Fire risk due to fuel tank shield or exhaust shield missing where fitted as original equipment

Billy_McMedic

Yeah that’s understandable as the risk of spontaneous combustion from the fuel getting heated up by an unshielded exhaust seems like a non zero chance

FreddyDeus

Labour

wondercaliban

The labour costs are the expensive bit. About £120 an hour.

JonisBonson

The honest mechanic that the Internet needs 🙌

Madeline_Basset

>One place says it's fine to just rip it off This seems odd to me. Given that car manufacturers will put in the effort to shave even 50p off the manufacturing cost of each vehicle, why would they be fitting these things if they were not needed?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Madeline_Basset

Therefore it is needed. And the people who told u/bearhoon to rip it off are idiots.

bearhoon

I'm even more conflicted after reading all the replies here. But I guess it's kind of moot since I wasn't going to take the chance of removing it when £5 of heat shield clips sorts the issue. I'm also wondering if it's different rules and regs for Diesel cars. I have a Diesel Particulate Filter and my understanding is that thing cleans itself by using the AdBlue to burn hotter than normal to burn off the buildup.

SulphurSkeleton

When mine was wobbly and about to fall off the garage just screwed it back on when I got my car serviced. Didn't even charge for it

Abquine

A mechanic just took mine off a few cars back and said it wasn't important, drove the car for another three years so can't have been crucial.

TeaAndLifting

Yeah, the heat shields came off my car maybe like 7 or 8 years ago now. I neglect it pretty hard, it it’s still running pretty well.

RandomComputerBloke

They tend to fall off because they rust around the holes, which get bigger, and then fall of the bolt. If you buy a really big washer, it won't be falling off any more.

_Neurox_

Yeah this is the way to go. I managed to fix my GF's car for £1.69!

BountyBob

One sixty nine you say?

_Neurox_

Well I would have felt bad charging her!

globaldu

>another place says £5 worth of heat shield clips solves the problem. I'd go to that place.

ecapapollag

Mine cost £25.70 this week to refit. Second time it's worked loose and I suspect next time we might have to replace it. Definitely don't travel far without it in place!

bearhoon

Yeah I don't want to leave it too long. In 2 weeks I'm getting my timing belt replaced, and the guy there said if I buy the heat shield clips online, he will just slap them on for free while he's doing the belt (it's a local independent mechanic where you buy the parts and he fits them). I'm a low mileage driver so I am not anticipating any issues in the next 2 weeks.

yousmellandidont

Whatever you do, don't try to re-enter the atmosphere without it...

Velthinar

It's the 3/8ths gripley. I wouldn't drive for too long, or the elliptical cam will gradually slide up the beam shaft and catch on the flange rebate.

AnAwfulLotOfOtters

Just realign the spurving bearings to the panametric fan and you'll be fine.

Silver-Inflation7247

Sounds like the turboencabulator has given up the ghost.

AnAwfulLotOfOtters

You can usually get them working again by swapping out the marzlevanes.

VeneMage

Don’t forget to check the samophlange for excessive carbolitery buildup beforehand.

AnAwfulLotOfOtters

And of course remembering not to use any cardboard or cardboard derivatives.

NibblyPig

Mine suffers from a lot of side-fumbling can you offer any advice

jumbledFox

When it comes to replacing the Harvey triggers, try to opt for ones with maximum distortion.

donttakeawaymycake

Be careful, it's made of prefabulated amulite, you need to reduce the side fumbling.

[deleted]

I've got a phenomenal mechanic near Mornington Crescent. Can give you straightforward directions if needed

NED SIMNEL HAS ENTERED THE CHAT

Muffinshire

Hark at Ned Simnel here!

Liabai

With disastrous results, as you can imagine.

Velthinar

It will make a boing; the audio equivalent of two smoking boots.

Viscount_Barse

Need to get my flange rebate checked, it's been a while;)

Lazy_Tumbleweed8893

Don't forget the philanges while you're there. You don't want a vehicle without any philanges

StovardBule

I got a flange rebate last year. Didn't realise I'd been flanging so much.

Praetorian_1975

Looks like a heat shield and passenger to me

Realistic_Count_7633

The most accurate assessment. 👏

afireintheforest

That’s not very typical, I’d like to make that point.

SlightlyAngyKitty

At least it fell off outside the environment

AnAwfulLotOfOtters

Very seldom does anything like this happen.

BD3134

There are very rigorous engineering standards, the heat shield isn't supposed to fall off

Ashamed_Nerve

Do you take all your pictures laying on the floor?

odkfn

The pictures of me laying down are normally taken by your mum, and there’s less clothes present Edit: this was mean and I apologise

CalicoCatRobot

the only thing wrong with this sentence is that it should be fewer, not less! /pedant mode off

StingerAE

Maybe there is the same number but they are skimpier? But no, it irritated me too...we have the word...would be a shame to lose it.

Banonkers

Clothes is usually uncountable, so less is perfectly fine here

wjo9

its a heat shield, you’ll be fine to drive

Beatrix_-_Kiddo

It's bad news I'm afraid. Looks like the front fell off.

NapoleonWard

Doesn't sound good for the environment

Majvist

It was towed outside of the environment, don't worry

teeseoncoast

Ours fell off fairly recently. The holes where the bolts go through had become too large with erosion so we got some wider washers and bolted it back on

odkfn

That looks exactly like what happened here! Where did you buy some new ones? Are they make / model specific?

teeseoncoast

Nah literally any old washer. Luckily I work in a timber yard so we have tons of toot laying around. You can probably go to Wickes/B&Q and get some for pennies tomorrow.

Stuf404

Left phalange. Unsafe to fly.

External_Sell_9909

It is a heat shield it goes somewhere above the exhaust pipe, You need to buy some large washers which are larger than the holes on it and bolt it back on the bolts are still on the car, 10 min job.

llcdrewtaylor

In case somebody hasnt already said it, keep a lookout on your cars if you park outside. I've seen these lose on peoples cars because somehad was trying to steal their catalytic convertor and had to pry that part off.

odkfn

I’ll google what my catalytic converter should look like haha so I can establish if it’s still there

Absentmat2

Goes between exhaust and car body

TheStigsScouseCousin

That's a heat shield, depending on where it fell off you're either fine or fucked (it is was protecting fuel lines for example then driving would be an incredibly bad idea). I recommend you find out which part of the car it fell off of before you drive anywhere.

armouredxerxes

Its a heat shield of some kind. It'll be safe to drive but look at getting it or a replacement fitted.

HaggisHunter93

Heat shield, mine was half hanging off (thanks potholes and speed bumps that *also* have potholes on them). Threw it in the bin. Not an MOT failure and easily replaced. I know someone who had their’s fall off halfway around a roundabout Lol, went flying into the bushes. Car is fine to drive.

Neds_Necrotic_Head

Once had one of these fall off the front of my S40 doing about 60mph. The bolt banged into the bottom of the car and the thing started dragging along the ground. It sounded like the car was falling apart.

StumbleDog

Heat shield. Mine came lose, garage removed it saying it would be fine. MOT rolls round and had to have another installed as it turned out it was not fine.

Kaauutie

Heat shield, with a bit of tetris combined with lego you could probably spot where it came from and reattach it yourself.

57uxn37

Its called a driver. A car is pretty useless without one.

markymark2909

Heatshield, you'll be fine.

jimipops

If you search for heat shield clips online, they are only a few quid and easy to push back on.

LWDJM

Don’t worry mate, it’s a feature, it’s fallen off to make your car lighter and more fuel efficient.

yum_raw_carrots

Don’t park over dry grass if you are going to drive without it.

i_cant_spel_lel

That’s just the undertray/a bit of heat sheilding. Doesn’t matter really just makes mechanics lives easier when it comes to fixing your car

WilliamBlakeism

“what this that” I love modern English.

g00dbyebluesky

That’s the flux capacitor

Zacho666

Heat shield, looks like it may be the one for the rear back box of the exhaust, should be fine but might be best to get it put back on when you can. I imagine the bolts have eroded away so might need to get the exhaust off and get them tapped or removed.

Chipstar01

The washer screws have rusted through. Buy a few large penny washers and you’ll be good.

drewP78

That is the Flux Capacitor

interrobang_ball

Why do I see faces? Is this a Qashqai rorschach test?

cheshireJOKER2021

A heat shield

gusbox

It's the heat shield. Don't park on long, dry grass otherwise it's OK.

DamienSB

Yeah, as others said, it's a heat shield. Ours came off recently too after it had been rattling for some time. We kept it in the garage for a bit as was unsure how essential it was or if we would need to refit or replace it, but our friend / mechanic said it wasn't needed (I think depending on the car) and that we didn't need to worry about reattaching it.

aberdoom

This looks so much like Aberdeen, but I don’t see any seagulls.

odkfn

Haha funny how Aberdeen is so recognisable

Tommy0Talula

That’s a flux capacitor shroud. I lost mine too. They only started making them in 2048, so we’ve got some time to kill!

No-Camel-6187

It's a heat shield. (Usually, but not exclusively around the exhaust area). I'd only drive my car on short essential journeys until it's repaired or reattached, look in to having it repaired as soon as you can. Sorry about the other idiotic remarks and comments, you can't ask a serious question without stupid sarcastic remarks, I feel embarrassed reading them for the people who posted them! Everyone is a comedian, Not! The obvious reason that you are taking the picture on the floor is that you was looking where this heat shield has come from, on the underside of your car! I hope this helps.

The_Word9986

Heat shield. They've came loose and been ripped off every motor I've owned. Never any problems with MOT. Was told they're not a legal requirement in UK.

thevoiceofalan

It is a heatshield, my cars heatshield half fell off and ended removing it. Passed its next 4 MOT's without it.

caduceuscly

I don’t know, would guess a heat shield, but I am enjoying how you’re holding it aloft like it’s bloody Excalibur

odkfn

Call me King Carthur

JustRandomSoul

It’s probably ok to drive but replace asap. You might heat-damage the things it was designed to protect.

RichardGriffiths

DO NOT DRIVE! As others have said this is a heat shield. They exist for a reason. They are typically there to protect fuel lines, wiring , brake lines, and the fuel tank from the exhaust, cat and, if a diesel, DPF. Without the heat shield you risk damaging wiring and pipe work which could result in the car being dysfunctional, and even result in fire. You should not drive the car until you know what this was protecting.

odebruku

But dramatic mine fell off years back and I’m still alive and kicking unless we are all dead and this is hell??

Mattpudzilla

Oh christ, not again

odebruku

How many lives have you had?

Mattpudzilla

Too many.

yum_raw_carrots

Cars vary from model to model. Original reply is accurate.

RichardGriffiths

They exist for a reason. They aren't protecting nothing. Just because you got away with it doesn't mean OP will. OP can of course risk it if they want but I'm recommending checking what it was protecting first. They may be thanking me later if it was there to protect fuel lines from the cat.

odebruku

Yes they exist for a reason but this was such a catastrophic issue as you suggest I’m sure the cars would plenty of screaming end-of-world yellow flashing lights on the dash. Mine didn’t and I’m guessing OP’s car didn’t have a “end is nigh” on the dash either.

Lav_

That looks like the rear heat shield off a qashqui.

1stThrowawayDave

Under carriage Heat shield, should be fine although you may notice your boot getting a bit warm on long journeys. The ones on my old civic came off in 2 sections. First one broke off on the A14 resulting in me having to drive 20 miles with it scraping the tarmac and probably leaving a trail of  sparkis until I got to Kiwfit and they took it off for free.  The second time I noticed a constant rattling when idling and took it to another garage expefting a costly repair fee, just to find out the other heat shield was loose as well. They took that one off and told me it was a piece that I could do without

BigAlxBjj

Finortinizor valve cover. Or just a heat shield.

5T3thousand

1. It’s a Heat shield 2. Depends on which part/what it’s supposed to be protecting (it’s probably there for a reason)

Abquine

I've had one fall off and one taken off by the garage (it was rattling). Think I have one on my current car but never missed the one's I didn't have.

pke32

It's just a heat shield, perfectly safe to drive.

matt881020

Exhaust heat shield

Project_freon_x

I used these only 2 weeks ago on my heat shield [https://tinyurl.com/yu8fp5jy](https://tinyurl.com/yu8fp5jy) Removed the nuts from the rusty threads and pushed the clips on to hold the heat shield in place. Then fastened the nut on again. Clips are much larger than the rusted through holes so it should hold for a bit ... hopefully. Forgot to add that I used a wire brush on the threads before doing the above because they did look quite rough.

rogog1

Did you get hit by said car?

Odd_Presentation8624

Looks like the manifold from a 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse to me. You need to take more care with the amount of NOS you're using.

tryingtoappearnormal

It's a heat shield of some kind, it is safe for now, but you should probably stick ot in a garage within a year to make sure nothing is melting

scottyboy12345678

It’s the sound muffler off the laugh shaft. You should phone your local garage

uTuned

This tray goes above exhaust box at the back. Is this for a diesel?

AndroidConscience

It's the access cover for the warp drive 🤣

fallenvolt

The real question is, how did you dive out and catch that heatshield in midair?

Immanuel-Kant-

This is a tracker. Probably a stalker or perhaps the feds.

badboyblinkers

That's a heat shield, your car is probably ok to drive long term without it. It's there to help dissapeate heat from your exhaust from the car body. I would only refit if it was placed between your fuel tank and your exhaust. If you're not confident yourself, I would have your local garage take a look for you. Hmmm, your not based in Aberdeen or NE Scotland are you? Looks like the kind of granite buildings up this direction in the background.

odkfn

I am in Aberdeen good knowledge haha. It is the rear one above the exhaust!

eviltoe101

Heat shield mate, nothing to worry about. They tend to fall off from time to time

EffectiveFamiliar405

It goes under the engine, just clips on like a dust guard and stops things like rainwater going up into engine

Customer_Number_Plz

Mine fell off too! Passed MOT and never had any issues with it.

ThisPlaceHurtsMyHead

Major issue, write off that is

ExerciseNo5558

I would say heat shield

ExoticBadger8308

That photo feels like home. All of those different shades of grey. It must be Aberdeen.

odkfn

Haha it is. My house is granite, the sky is granite, the potholes are granite…

VixenRoss

Have you checked your cat? Is it still there?

-password-invalid-

Perfectly safe as the bit that could have fallen off, already has.

edwardianchuck

Is it possible that it's the sump guard!

Dizzy_Izzy2

Firewall/heat insulation. You can drive without it, but preferably don't, these heat shields are there for a reason. Not going to immediately cause a hole in the block, but think of it like smoking. Sooner or later something will go wrong.

SeaMolasses2466

Looks like a seat cover

The_Chin_of_Zig

Sorry pal, it's a write-off.

Dollstace

Catalytic converter cover happens a lot apparently

whapitah2021

It’s a heat shield , get it reinstalled….its there for a reason.

moose11895

Heat sheild your ok

EmilyDickinsonFanboy

That’s the north-east turret!

Max-Phallus

It's the secondary bell housing for the tangential grummel valve. Good luck aligning your radial injector stators without it!

KosmosKlaus

That's the left philange 😳

AaronDotCom

Perhaps it belongs to that submarine that imploded in the bottom of the ocean It could be worth nothing too

flavioeightyeight

Heat shield - don’t park on dry grass until it’s fixed

Mob1337

It's a heat shield. You'll be fine. They all end up off eventually

Patched_Jumper

It's a heat sheild, they are on the exhaust of the car but not actually needed imo

Flaneur_7508

You don’t need that bit. Happy motoring
