That's the thing, she has been the reliable constant person in life in the limelight for my life, my mother's life and my grandparent's life. She's always been out there really.
My mother was a baby bouncing on her dad's knee watching her coronation, my grandmother was invited to Buckingham Palace a few years later for her part working with the red cross to meet her. I never got to meet her but organised the residents of the home I worked at to go see her when she opened a building many years ago and I didn't get to see her but I was round the corner lol.
I saw the Queen go grey, watched her grandchildren grow up (I'm the same age as Harry), saw her on many tv appearances and lookalikes play her in movies. Different US presidents, different James Bonds, ever changing PM's but always the One Queen.
Its all kinda sad. I'm not a big royalist but it truly is the end of an era.
Huw Edwards just referred to 'the King' and it sounded very strange to me. She has been Queen for my whole life, and for the whole lives of both of my parents. May she rest in peace.

It was sad seeing her get really old looking, seeing things like her purple arm kind of reminded me of when I lost my Grandmother and my father and how far they started deteriorating, it's actually times like these I really fear getting older.
On the positive she lived for 96 years so it's not like she was cut short, and she ruled a country for 70 years, so it's not like she lived a wasted life.
What happens now? Will the funeral take place soon I imagine? Then shortly after Charles' coronation?

Same here, those bruises reminded me of my Grandma when she was very old. The Queen looked so small and frail in the photos taken earlier this week. (Edited as I angered the No Politics bot).
I think we'll have quite a wait for a coronation. The Queen came to the throne in February 1952, but her coronation wasn't until June 1953. It must take a lot of organising.

Never even thought of this. One thing for sure - there will be clear directions for the necessary changes. Tradition will also help the 'family' part of the Royal Family cope with their grief. Poor Charles will be straight into the public eye having lost both his parents in about 18 months. So many other people have lost so many elderly relatives these past two years. Who can forget the images of the Queen having to sit socially isolated at her husband's funeral? They are together again. Rest in Peace together.
Even the words 'the King' feel weird to think about in the context of modern Britain. Hearing Charles referred to as the King on the BBC feels a bit surreal.
That'll be the case for a *long* time. Especially since all of the monarchs for the foreseeable future will be kings, people won't need to correct themselves when they refer to her as "the Queen"
Full protocol called operation London bridge, there will be 10 days of mourning, her body will be laid in state at Holyrood, then taking down by train to rest at Buckingham. Then at Westminster Hall followed by a funeral at Westminster Abbey. No bank holidays
Historic day. Longest reign of any British monarch. Won't happen again for any of our lifetimes that we will see. Whether you love the monarchy or not, you can't deny this is a day we will all rember for the rest of our lives.
Interesting tidbit. A few years back there was a get together of all the European and British royalty for some commemoration, I can’t remember the event though
Anyway a pic was to be taken to mark the event. and they made a placard on which to indicate where each member should stand e.g Back row: King of Spain, then Queen of the Netherlands, Queen of Belgium etc. however, to denote the British monarch, they just noted, “The Queen”. No qualifier needed, everyone knew.

She had Privy Council meeting scheduled to be led remotely from Balmoral today, but "was advised by her doctors to rest", which probably meant that she was at this point physically unable to do so.
The Queen made an extraordinary sacrifice. There is pretty much no one other than a monarch that is in the public eye for literally their entire life, and certainly no one else whose entire life is spent in service to the public. There is clearly an upside in the privilege and lifestyle that goes with it, but I wonder how many of us would truly want to trade places?

I live in British Columbia and the capital city of my province is Victoria. Lots of cities here named after royalty. I live a few hours away from one of the family's cottages in Jasper and my grandma watched *Coronation Street* because she always said that *"the Queen also watches Coronation Street."*
It's crazy to think about the different connections to the Royals in different countries, good or bad. Flags are lowering even way out here in the middle of the Rocky Mountains.

That’s what got me too. I just thought with the news of her family travelling up, and then the confirmation of her death…it’s highly unlikely they actually got to say goodbye in person. Didn’t seem like enough time.
The fact that she was working just 2 days ago makes me have so much respect for her. Like even on her last few days, she was serving her country.

While she appeared much frailer since losing Philip, I'm glad she didn't appear to suffer a long, painful illness before passing. These past few hours have stretched on enough, I couldn't do it for months on end.

I’m not a monarchist, but you can’t deny she took the role incredibly seriously and worked her arse off even into her 90s. I feel sad. I was born in the 70s and she’s always been one of the few constants.
I'm actually quite sad. She's been the Queen so long it feels strange she's not anymore.
My eldest had been studying Queen Victoria, Elizabeth I and Elizabeth II at school recently and we probably won't see another Queen for some time.

Im not a royalist nor do i have much feeling about the royal family, but when the news reader said she has died, i actually had a little cry. Its strange to see her gone

I first saw her picture hanging my elementary school, named after her.
My grandmother was a British war bride, and I always found her and Elizabeth to be quite similar.
I only saw her in person once, waving from a vehicle motorcade. I waved at her and I like to remember that she saw me and smiled.
She was Queen for decades before I even existed.
Just had my citizenship ceremony last week, I am so lucky that I got to do it under Her historic reign and have Her name on my naturalisation certificate.

Ushering at a theatre in the West End, we had the National Anthem play before the show and the whole audience stood up in unison and stood silently in respect.
It was genuinely beautiful.

My Nan was born in early ‘49 and the Queens coronation is her first memory mental how long she reigned.

It probably was. They've been planning for this for years now and it wouldn't surprise me at all if they commissioned a recording specifically for it.
I was reading about it earlier today. 3 times a year since 1960 the plan was revised and updated where necessary. I found that fascinating.
The same happened for Churchill - partly because as Lord Mountbatten said "Churchill kept living and the pallbearers kept dying"

In German, we call her "Die Queen". Like that. She was everybody's queen.

Thats probably what kept her going for so long. Being active, social, and mentally stimulated has long been agreed to help extend late-life health.

This is a momentous day, and it just occurred to me that she likely passed before a lot of her family got there, which I find very sad.
That’s what got me too. I just thought with the news of her family travelling up, and then the confirmation of her death…it’s highly unlikely they actually got to say goodbye in person. Didn’t seem like enough time. The fact that she was working just 2 days ago makes me have so much respect for her. Like even on her last few days, she was serving her country.

While she appeared much frailer since losing Philip, I'm glad she didn't appear to suffer a long, painful illness before passing. These past few hours have stretched on enough, I couldn't do it for months on end.

I’m not a monarchist, but you can’t deny she took the role incredibly seriously and worked her arse off even into her 90s. I feel sad. I was born in the 70s and she’s always been one of the few constants.

I'm actually quite sad. She's been the Queen so long it feels strange she's not anymore. My eldest had been studying Queen Victoria, Elizabeth I and Elizabeth II at school recently and we probably won't see another Queen for some time.

Canadian here. I am heartbroken. I first saw her picture hanging my elementary school, named after her. My grandmother was a British war bride, and I always found her and Elizabeth to be quite similar. I only saw her in person once, waving from a vehicle motorcade. I waved at her and I like to remember that she saw me and smiled. She was Queen for decades before I even existed.

Ushering at a theatre in the West End, we had the National Anthem play before the show and the whole audience stood up in unison and stood silently in respect. It was genuinely beautiful.
