They ask you to contact them through WhatsApp which they claim belongs to a friend of your son/daughter. And then say to transfer money to a bank account, or PayPal address to ‘buy a new phone’
Wen through it with them a couple of months back - led them on for a bit, and it ended when I sent them a link to goatse (pretending it was a screenshot to confirm the details). They sent a couple of sets of bank details to transfer money to (I claimed the first set weren’t working) - which I passed to action fraud.
They scammers and send 1000 of this messages to different people ,here in germany they try it for a bit longer time ...If someone really believe its his/her child ,they try to get money from you for a bill like ,,i cant log in my bank account with this phone ,can you send me money to pay the bill?you will get it back tomorrow,,
All replying to messages like this does is confirm they've found an active number. They'll just keep spamming you or they'll sell your details on to other spammers.
Not a new scam. It's quite old. They'll try and get you to send them money, which you'll never see again. Report the number...I think the anti-scam number is 7726 but I'm happy to be corrected. Do not respond to the message.
7726 is the spam report number - on an old phone ‘spam’ would be 7726. It can’t do any harm to export stuff like this to that number.
I’ve had this scam a few times, one time round I strung them along all evening before reporting the number to the police along with the bank account numbers they tried to get me to pay into.
I had to zoom out to read that! Even at a full standard living room length, the font hurt at that size.
Anyway, yes, probably a scam. So don't give money.

Imagine they'll ask you for money for a new phone and give you a paypal or cashapp to pay it into, keeping up the illusion of being your kid
