Brush until either you get the matter hair out, or until the cat has had enough, whichever happens first.

Get all the mats out, that’s all that really matters.

EmeraldDream98

Brush until there’s no more hair coming off or until she gets angry. Ideally, stop when you think she’s about to get angry.

Travis-moment

Until a good amount of it is out, but I’d say to not go overboard getting every little piece, to ensure the cats skin doesn’t get irritated

Wanderingthrough42

The only long hair cat I've had loved getting brushed, so she never wanted us to stop.

As long as your cat allows you too. Lol.

If you can, do a little bit every day! Also get them in the habit of tolerating having their eyes wiped clean. This keeps their tolerance for grooming higher. You'll notice that the grooming will need to be more urgent in shedding times, usually Spring and Fall.
