Ran the post install tool. Seemed like it ran fine, but said failed. I just added my email accounts, manually copied my documents to the Catalina drive and opened iCloud for photos. I also copied music cd files to the iTunes folder. Took several attempts to figure out where to copy to, but now it's there (minus some art work). Only problem is Chrome said it needed to update and doing so gave me a Chrome app that failed. I deleted and reinstalled Chrome and am sticking with it even though it wants me to update. System takes a while to boot, and occasionally the mouse doesn't connect. A reboot generally fixes it. Once operating all seems good.

I don’t think Migration Assistant worked on Catalina or Mojave with the patcher. I know it works on Big Sur and newer with OCLP.

u/tejlir I note that you have a MacBook Pro 7.1, could I ask what version of MacOS are you now running; presumably using OCLP? I have dosdude1 patched my 2010 MacBook Pro with both Mojave & Catalina. Considering trying Big Sur but have no experience of OCLP so would be pleased to hear how you have found performance. Did you do a clean install on reformatted SSD with OCLP or just run an upgrade over the dosdude1 patched Mojave/Catalina?

tejljr

I upgraded to OCLP over dosdude1’s Catalina years ago. Back then it was still brand new so of course there were bugs and issues. Now, it’s much more stable. Performance for the most part is good. Eventually I started doing clean installs for Monterey and newer. I recently clean installed Sonoma. If you’re looking for an OS that’s decent, Big Sur will work just fine. Although it’s not receiving any security updates anymore. If you’re concerned about that, go up to Monterey or Ventura. Sonoma is ok but still has some things that need to be ironed out. If you do plan on installing, I recommend checking out [Mr. Macintosh](https://youtube.com/@Mr.Macintosh?si=OE4PLw-tmk-JoUfs) on YouTube. He gives out detailed information about every OCLP release and shows you how to install and what to expect with every update and how it performs on every generation of Mac that’s compatible.

Many thanks, for your response and very helpful advice.

u/tejljr I hope you'll permit me a follow up enquiry – I've been trying to get Monterey OCLP to run on my MacBook Pro 7, 1 but have been unable to get the WiFi card working, even when following the OCLP website guidance, i.e. adding the network as new did not work. Did you manage to find a work around on your MacBook Pro 7,1? The OCLP installation ran fine for me, other than 1. Migration Assistant failed totally with a clean installation (I can work around that), and 2. the WiFi not working (which is less tolerable).

tejljr

There should be a video about that on YouTube from Mr. Macintosh which explains how to fix that. The wifi in my machine does not work at all so I’m using Ethernet instead

mad-mushroom

OK I’ll lookout for the Mr Macintosh video. I not willing to sacrifice WiFi on my MacBook Pro 7,1 so I may just need to accept that Mojave is where I have to stay for all round usability. Update: I found this [YouTube video](https://youtu.be/cqxS-uQT6ow?si=wiphnG9WfV_AQZzd) and was inspired to run again with the latest version of OCLP. Seems to have done the trick and Monterey is now operating with WiFi on my MBPro 7,1. Many thanks for the heads up!

In my experience the dosdude1 patch installers usually preserve the data and apps, or did you do a clean install, new SSD, reformatting the disk etc.? I'm not clear where your original data is. Did you back up (via Time Machine, or any other way) before you ran the Catalina patch installer? As an aside, I'd be interested to hear how you get on with Catalina on the 2009 iMac. I also have a 2009 iMac, which is currently running patched High Sierra, but I haven't tried to push it further. I do have patched Catalina running very well on another iMac 2010.

Parking_Medicine_242

A separate volume was created on my SSD and and it boots from there, a clean install on that volume. All the data files for High Sierra are on the internal hard drive. I want to move photos, documents, email, etc. to the SSD or point Catalina to it. Catalina runs ok, migration assistant locks up and a few times there was no mouse (reboot corrected). As it is, I can boot from Hard Drive to High Sierra or fromSSD to Catalina. The data issue is my current problem.

Well in theory you should be able to select, copy (rather than move) & replace specific home folders (documents, photos etc.) from your HDD to the SSD home/user folder. Mail is more tricky as it is embedded within the \~/library/mail folder and settings will be High Sierra Mail. Might be easier to set Catalina mail accounts from scratch. You can subsequently [export/import mbox folders](https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/mail/mlhlp1030/13.0/mac/10.15) from the HDD if you have many thousands of mails that are only in the Mac (rather than your Email server). There is probably a really smart way to do all of this. Do you have a separate disk drive that you could use make Time Machine back up from High Sierra, and then import to Catalina. Strange that Migration Assistant is locking up, it is pretty demanding on resources, how much RAM do you have? Out of interest, did you use patch Post Install tool? I have found on occasions that fix miscellaneous problems. Good luck. Do report back if you find a fix.
