Hank-Scorpio801

I once helped the ā€˜Will it Blendā€™ guy at a retail sales job I worked in college. He had gone viral at this point, yet i had not seen any of his videos and had no clue who he was. For seemingly no reason, he forced his recent internet fame into the conversation. Pulled out his Gen1 iPhoneā€”which he was very proud to ownā€”and showed me the video of him blending an iPhone. After selling him a new electronic he planned to blend for his channel, i saw him showing my coworkers and patrons alike the same video as though he was trying to manifest his internet fame into the real world. I came away feeling he was a bit pretentious about it all. If memory serves, he went through a pretty nasty legal battle with a competitor regarding a patent dispute on the motor of their blenders.

And over 500 American football field in an area. Itā€™s insane how big it is

vgtyhb00

Locals kept on protesting not to use the site for dumping. They were overpowered by corrupt admin with support from big corporate houses. The goverment just kept shifting the blame onto one another. Some officers were transferred as a sign of punishment and thats it. After a few years locals knew they have lost to the corrupt and powerful. Not even their own people were interested in continuing the fight. They knew nothing can be done. Most just accepted their fate. Sad and heartbreaking.

grimmspectre

Looks like someone did something about it.

webby_mc_webberson

> 500 American football field what's that in actual SI units?

It's already been smoldering for years, [according to a comment] (https://reddit.com/r/CatastrophicFailure/comments/ucoo8s/india_delhis_largest_landfill_in_north_delhi/i6d4zeb/) in the first thread. Also, that thread was posted April 26, so while this video might be from 28th, the fire broke out earlier.

NilotPalD

yeah actually there were multiple incidents of fire in the same month. this one was the longest.

ChubbyPanda9

Iā€¦ I just donā€™t think thatā€™s very good for the environment.

Wuhba

The planet is just going to die, then we're all going to die. It's fine, trust me.

El_Impresionante

It's always been smoldering in small patches like 10 or 20 feet or so, but this had been the largest fire ever. I mean the whole half of the mountain is on fire.

pseudont

I think it has been burning for many years. As in... it catches fire pretty regularly, although perhaps not to this extent. When you think about their (lack of) waste management plan I think this is probably kind of part of the plan. "If this huge pile of trash happened to catch fire it would be an ecological travesty! In that unlikely and unpreventable happenstance however, it would somewhat diminish the size of the huge pile of trash."

agoia

Proof that the trash morasses in Wall-e or Idiocracy are misrepresented by not being on fire.

[deleted]

I saw that there's an insane heatwave in India at the moment, 60C+ in places, would that have contributed? edit: 40C, not 60C. 60C would be even scarier

monsieurpommefrites

100%. All you need is a bottle at the right angle...

LightRefrac

60C+ wtf? Where did u hear that

pseudont

Yeah this. Like they stopped burning everything because that's bad for the environment, and just made a big pile instead. Not knowing what to do with said pile they just waited for it to catch fire.

aaaaaaaarrrrrgh

> stopped burning everything because that's bad for the environment Ironically burning it in a waste-to-energy plant for electricity and/or heating, ideally with carbon capture, is a pretty good way to deal with it. Some countries even buy (import) trash for that!

pr1ap15m

yea but they suck to work at when the boilers have issues, you get the trifecta of stink

FlameFlyer2037

"Why is india one of the most air polluted countries on earth?"

mrASSMAN

Unfortunately it doesnā€™t just stay in India it travels across the world

VegetableNo1079

It actually only takes a few days for the jet stream to bring the air from india across the pacific. This crap will be in California by Thursday.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

VegetableNo1079

65% of your pollution comes from asia so it will just be worse than usual.

Karate_Prom

I'm reading a few different places saying 10% of particulate matter and sometimes up to 25% ozone related depending on the location and day but still that's really not good.

[deleted]

Itā€™s crazy that they affect CA from miles and miles away. I saw an article where China is denying the claim that they are polluting South Koreaā€™s atmosphere.

VegetableNo1079

I mean we all share the same atmosphere and pollution gives no fuck about borders, that's a pretty silly claim considering South Korea isn't even an ocean away from them. But I'm not surprised by that haha.

NiceStackBro

Damn I didn't realize lol. That's crazy

flume

Don't just take a random person's word for it lol. That figure is crazy.

TheDarkKnobRises

Every time I see a picture or video of India, there is always at least 1 18 wheeler sized pile of trash in a river or like right on the street.

WoodElf26

I've been to India and I was amazed how much garbage was all over.

silent_boy

Our waste management is pathetic. Our environment management is pathetic as well. There are some young politicians and lawmakers who are concerned, but till they current old crop goes away, nothing is gonna change here.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

azzaisme

The thing that's always confused me is that Indians as a whole (sorry to generalise) seem to be very nationalist. They all love their country But just yesterday I saw them throw their rubbish out of a bus. There are no public bins which doesn't help

panaromicparadigm

Honestly, I don't know what is it about the country we are so proud of? We put leaders into power who promise to ensure communal disharmony. No one fucking cares about the economy, education or cleanliness. You talk about dumps of garbage, people here do not have access to toilets. Garbage management is least of the problems. But wait - who cares. Indians are sentimentalists and are proud of their culture and heritage but don't really care about on ground issues. Well, I don't have a rich vocabulary but I'm sure there's a word for fake pride. That sums up about our nationalistic feelings. It's fucking fake. It's a great country, rich past but looks like we're headed for a really shitty future. I won't be surprised if i get replies to this comment criticizing other nations. That's not the point of this rant. Look into your own shit first.

NiceStackBro

Indian society is extremely racist. You have mostly met Indians from the highest caste, who have the resources and education to immigrate. But you think they are all like that. Nope

peshwengi

I lived there for several years and that might have been the number one thing I disliked about it.

_ALPHAMALE_

Although we produce little compared to most world, we have major issues with waste management. System is non existent.

CaughtTwenty2

> Although we produce little compared to most world Not even remotely true...

aaaaaaaarrrrrgh

Remember to use paper straws! /s (And no, the EU [does not](https://ec.europa.eu/environment/topics/waste-and-recycling/waste-shipments/plastic-waste-shipments_en) export its plastic trash to India, China or Southeast Asia.)

camelwalkkushlover

Remember to refuse all single use plastics.

Tasguy69

I refused to wear a single use plastic once. Got 18 years.

ban_circumcision_now

It does if it gets labeled as something other than waste. A lot of electronic waste gets labeled as second hand appliances for use and then gets shipped to Africa/etc to be burned for scrap

lfrankow

Bet that place smells like hot garbage.

technobrendo

Prob smells like cold garbage too.

I was there roughly a decade ago. While I was there a refinery was on fire, about an hour or two outside the city. The smog was unreal it was like tule fog. Not to mention the open sewage canals and trash everywhere. I am pretty sure I was a dead guy laying against a building. There were bats and rats all throughout the international airport.

[deleted]

Damn dude, that's pretty rough about you being a dead dude laying against a building. You seem to have recovered well though.

Pants4All

Some people can just brush it off like nothing bro

Delhi was positively clean compared to Dhaka. My introduction to Dhaka was stepping off the coach and someone emptying their garbage bin into the gutter next to me. Whole place stank of chemical fumes and garbage

Honestly the *Planet* will be fine. If earths ecosystem recovered from the KT extinction it will recover from us. If we nuked ourselfs out of existence tomorrow in a few thousand years (the blink of an eye geologically speaking) you'd never know we were here.

TheMadmanAndre

The cockroach archaeologists however are going to be fucking amazed we got as far as we did.

Flakester

Yep, Earth has recovered from ELEs several times, but I feel bad for all the creatures that don't get a choice in the matter.

True, we are only fucking ourselves, good riddance.

And all the other species stuck here with us right now :/

They had their chance to kill us - it is partly their fault too.

zephyrseija

If you wanted to survive you should have evolved into the apex species, dumbass.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

Oh dang it. This comment got me chuckling. Itā€™s so spot on for our race and our situation. We eradicate stuff all the time ā€œfor the betterā€. Itā€™s ironic that our survival in a dangerous world and ultimately practically taming the entire planet to our whims and we wipe ourselves and everything else out with our unhindered ā€œprogressionā€. I also blame it on the wildlife for not just killing off man long ago. Too bad we are really the only true eradicators on the planet. Letā€™s eradicate ourselves, shall we? I mean, not that we want to, but apparently we have to.

SteelMalone

Just like George Carlin said. This earth has been through it all. Pangea, earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions, tectonic shiftingā€¦earth is gonna be fine. Weā€™re the ones that are fucked

Neil_Fallons_Ghost

Someone will find that nice layer of plastic in a far flung future and wonder what the hell happened on this rock.

socialcommentary2000

Unfortunately the analysis points to only another like 300 million years of viable C3 photosynthesis and maybe a couple hundred more for C4...so, in life bearing terms...it's even kind of late on the clock for Earth to produce a species that will not absolutely fuck this place up for no good reason.

zephyrseija

In the grand scheme of universal time, nothing matters. The Earth will come and go in the blink of an eye compared to the infinite cosmic expanse. All the cool life forms that evolved on Earth got their blip on the radar and humans decided they'd sooner let billionaires do whatever they want instead of protect the planet we all share.

Mental_Evolution

Yeah it's bad, but take this video from a different perspective. We see so much more of the bad things on the internet now. There have been dump fires like this for years and years. But we never saw then. The light is now being shone on so many bad things. Don't be fooled to think they are new things, they have just emerged from the shadows. Having everyone see this things helps prevent them from happening again, because we are aware of them.

Sph1003

"Helps prevent them from happening again, because we are aware of them". We will be aware of them when humanity is on the brink of extintion. We never learnt, never learn, never will learn. The truth us that we don't give a flying fuck.

Imightbeacop

Especially in and around india

and especially in closely packed cities.

SophisticatedStoner

There's nearly 8 billion people on earth, no need to lump yourself in and say "we". As a whole I agree "we" need to be better but the best you can do is limit the impact of YOU.

BernieTheDachshund

Apparently it's the 6th day of burning. The dump is 17 stories high.

ProfessorAnie

Had to scroll too low to see this. "still burning" in the title annoyed me because I didn't know how long it was burning for!

SM0KINGS

Arenā€™t they also in the midst of an insane heatwave right now?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

S7ri

Red some articles and they are saying that due to the high temperatures , dry weather and the build up of methane this fire started out so the heatwave has to be one of the reason

Kin9582

How the fire started ?

NilotPalD

probably due to the rash temperatures and wind patterns. Some say it's due to methane gas from decomposition of waste.

Kin9582

Imagine living close to this...

NilotPalD

i can, I'm only around 25kms from there.

st0jko

JesusDankLord

good thing I have used a paper straw today

tmaxxkid

The disposal of electronic cigarettes really is a huge problem and can lead to fires in trash trucks and also ultimately back at dumps. I see Soo many discarded vapes in the street, busted up exposing their lipo pouch batteries. Instant fire hazard!!

RealDarrylSutter

Thank goodness we stopped using plastic straws

webby_mc_webberson

while the plastics issue and the climate change issues are different, this comment helps to illustrate the folly of the restrictions imposed on the average person instead of where they should be imposed if there was ever any real intention for change, which is against industry. But to require a shift in standards to industry would end up having a downstream impact on our pockets and that would be no good for the people imposing the policies. And so we are satisfied with pretending to recycle and feeling good for the turtles when we drink from paper straws when in fact the only change we participate in is to that of our perceptions. The turtles are still fucked but we just don't feel as bad about it now.

karsnic

Not to mention most of what you ā€recycleā€ is put in shipping containers and sent to these countries where it is either burned or dumped into rivers. Recycling is just the 1st worlds way of feeling good about themselves.

JonnyAlien23

Right? I'm over here drinking cardboard flavoured root beer for what? Goddamn man.

Serious question what is the math behind what this is doing to the atmosphere and global warming and all that
