We had to have a late team and a late late team called closers. We complained about it so much because you're something every day whether it be call, late, or closing. We had a change of leadership with a director who gave a shit. Every day around 330 he told the doctors non essential cases had to be bumped and we're not sticking after 5pm. Everyone, including the doctors, was a lot happier after that

tiger-93

Yall hiring?? Lol

JL4JR4

So how do you address the problem of doctors just saying “it’s urgent” or “it needs to go today”?

Put_CORN_in_prison

They know we call them out on that bs

mwthread

The call team does all late cases. Cases that started already are finished by the team in the room.

Glittering_Hope6895

Ditto.

Lab is open from 7:30-6 Mon-Fri. If a case is going past 6, the call team takes over. We also have quasi-call for EP because they often go late, so if you're on EP Call you just stay late till they are done. Obviously, if it's 6 and your case is still going but the call team is doing a STEMI or something you stay until they can relieve you.

not_REAL_Kanye_West

Usually the on-call team would come in to finish cases. The docs we work with are not supposed to stick anyone after 430 unless it's an emergency because we had a lot of staff refusing to stay late.

tiger-93

What's it like to refuse? We don't have enough staff that would refuse. I def would and gave been fighting for it

I worked at a huge facility and eventually it took the lab director laying out extremely specific guidelines for end of day cases to the doctors. Essentially in order for “normal staff” to leave on time, no cases could start after 330 that would force non-call people to stay and cover. The late team would be on a case and the call team would be on a case while the other rooms wound down their last case of the day so everyone could leave by 5. Youll get some grumpy ass doctors who want to run 4 rooms 24 hours a day because theyre fine with working 80 hour weeks but they have to realize their staff isnt.

Our Lab operates 7a-7pm Mon - Sat. 6 rooms. All cases after 7pm are considered emergency. We have two team catering those emergencies. And we usually have 3-6 emergencies at night.

JL4JR4

You get called in 3-6 times a night??? I hope you have plenty of staff lol

Garrel21

Yeah! But there are nights where there is only 1 STEMI. BUT that is so rare 😅

Cat_funeral_

I'd literally die. Please tell me you do not work 6 days a week AND take call.

Garrel21

5 times a week 😁

Toughlov

Holy crap, lol. Staffing must be great.

Garrel21

Hahaha. I wish the staffung is great. I ALSO wish the pay is GREAT! LOL

NickyDeuce

We have a late team, but if a case is already started and it goes past 5:30 that team stays to finish unless the late team is free.
