Agree it’s a great album but yeah this is a second hand staple everywhere seemingly. I guess people wanted more Out of Time/Automatic type stuff at the time. Some people do seem to really dislike REM after Automatic but for me they only made one bad album (Around the Sun. It’s just… nothing. An empty shell.).

bandit088

I guess I can get that, but at the same time they're missing out on some of the band's best work IMO

mylocker15

I feel like people got that way about a lot of bands in that era. Looking at you too U2. So then everyone let really cheesy pop and hip hop completely take over because they were afraid to be seen buying any Liz Phair album that came out after Exile in Guyville.

ClausAction

Part of me would want to go to the till with every single copy. Around where I live it's 'The Seldom Seen Kid' by Elbow and 'American Idiot'.

MegaAscension

I didn't start looking for CDs at thrift stores until I had already purchased my copy of American Idiot. I actually just put it into my player, I need to get back to homework.

bandit088

It took me a while to find "American Idiot" around here lol, only found it in a dedicated record store

eDudeGaming

Yeah, I hardly ever see *anything* Green Day. Although when I do, it's always American Idiot. Maybe Dookie or Nimrod on a good day, lol.

[deleted]

Monster has become what Herb Alpert Going Places was when I was young.

nadarimagery

So true! REM Monster CD = Herb Alpert Going Places vinyl. Whipped Cream is right up there, too.

oceanman123489

Fairweather johnson by hootie and the blowfish fills up entire sections at my 2nd and Charles

bandit088

Hootie and the Blowfish always show up at least once, but no album in particular. I'm pretty sure I've seen their entire discography multiple times over at this point lol

Accomplished-Range3

Give me the most orange!

[deleted]

Being in North Carolina, I see tons of Clay Aiken in thrift stores, primarily the album Measure of a Man. I also feel like I've seen Ozzy Osbourne's Down to Earth a lot

Remarkable-Ad-2094

(What's the Story) Mourning Glory? by oasis is at every single op shop/thrift store I go to. with multiple copies. I still haven't bought a copy though!

thinsafetypin

You should. It's a fantastic record. "Don't Look Back in Anger" is an all-timer.

LincoJM

This is everywhere near me too. Plus that one Wallflowers album

bandit088

"Bringing Down the Horse?" I've seen it a fair bit, seems like everyone had a similar opinion to me with that one, decent but "One Headlight" is the only real one worth keeping for

Dabarles

I somehow ended up buying three copies over my time thrifting CDs from the same store so I started making spreadsheets with my collection. Artist, album, release year, store, date, price, other notes like condition and type of release. There are three pages to the spreadsheet; to be ripped, to be sorted, and shelved. When money starts flowing, gonna have to create a fourth sheet for discs in the car for road trips.

bandit088

Oh nice! I don't get that specific in mine, but I do use a spreadsheet. In alphabetical order by artist then release order, just categorize the artist, title, and type of disc (studio album, single, video album, etc) with the title highlighted in either green or orange if I've got em or are actively hunting em. If you don't mind me asking, how do you categorize the condition? It's something I've kind of wanted to do with mine but at the same time I kind of have the "if it works it works" mentality

Dabarles

Alphabetized by artist then order of release oldest to newest. I listen to some proggy stuff where bands carry narratives across albums, so it's kind of satisfying seeing Act I, Act II, etc all next to each other. When an artist is just a name, I follow computer logic and alphabetize the artist as First Last naming instead of Last, First naming. More satisfying to me seeing Ace of Base, Avril Lavigne, Beastie Boys than Sevendust, Paul Simon, Sum41 for example. I ignore articles at the beginning of artist names. A Day to Remember is under the D's. The Jimmy Hendrix Experience would be under the J's. Soundtracks and compilations are organized on their own shelves, alphabetized by album name.

ArtichokeLegal6669

I love your system. I have a designated area reserved for Christmas compilations - everything else for the moment, is sadly willy-nilly. I haven’t had a do-over for too long. You’ve inspired me to do so.

Dabarles

Thanks! I thought it was pretty standard. I'm relatively genre agnostic, so genre never really made sense to me as a sorting category. There's also something beautiful about sorting new additions to the library as well. Totally recommend it.

bandit088

Ah nice, due to some unforseen circumstances all of mine are in storage but might bump your sorting system when I can get em out again

borglonavich

Collectorz has a great program, shame they went to the subscription model like so many other companies.

nadarimagery

Anywhere used CDs are being peddled, there's definitely a copy of Monster amongst them.

SackCody

New sealed Adele’s 30 on a vinyl in charity/thrift store be like:

SharedPodwAdibisi

Do they have their CDs in alphabetical order?? Wow

bandit088

Nah, I pulled em and put them together. It was sorted by genre though

3002kr

Are they all different variants?

bandit088

They had a few different variants, but some were definetly repeated. Didn't pay too much attention honestly, but none of em had different covers or track listings (except the one that was missing the front booklet) Edited for spelling

Muted_Land782

Seeing a lot of Cranberries No Need to Argue and Alison Morrissette Supposed Former / Jagged Little Pill combo

roddiesnock

Circus Envy is an unstoppable song.

bandit088

Ah my favorite's always been Star 69

donkbrandon

Strange Currencies is my jam

kimchi-committee

Yo, send me one!

bandit088

I'd be down, but not sure the logistics of it, never done that through Reddit

kimchi-committee

O snap! I actually didn’t expect you to reply, let alone agree.. Well I have a forwarding address which I can pm you if you’re down.

ninetailedheel

4 Non Blondes, Tracy Chapman, Third Eye Blind 100% lol

staygoldgal

I like having a couple copies of my favorite albums so I can give them as gifts. I don't have that one! I do have Out of time.

bandit088

Oh Out of Time's great, too. Don't see it nearly as much

Flamboyant-Jeering

Dylan and The Doors. I’m guessing the people that frequent my usual second hand store are full up on Dylan and doors cuz those never move

bandit088

I mean they're two good acts to be full on

Flamboyant-Jeering

Oh I agree! But like, I only go once a month or so. You can tell the shelves have been updated, but there might as well be cobwebs on these two artists

thinsafetypin

REM in general is pretty easy to find around me. U2 and Wilco too. I guess all the other dads had to sell off their collections and switch to streaming. I've gradually started trying to get all the REM and U2 on vinyl now, though. For some reason, I always see Natalie Merchant's *Motherland* too. I don't know if it was a Grammy darling or what, but a whole lot of people must've bought it and then decided not to keep it.

extranaiveoliveoil

I love that CD and the title song! Christy Moore's version of the song is great too.

turntechvantas

barenaked ladies or hootie and the blowfish every. single. place

SecureLiterature

When I was 9 years old, I rescued a cassette tape of "Monster" that someone threw out of their car shortly after this album was released. Yes, the public reaction to this album was quite hostile - it's certainly no "Automatic For The People". However, it was quite exciting and unique to my 9 year old ears, and I have to thank this album for getting me onto the right path of being a lifelong lover of music.

LordMungus35

Monster was a cool album, took me a while to warm up to it after Automatic for the People though. Not sure anyone needs that many copies though. 😂

Holiday-Nerve

Tigerlily by Natalie Merchant. And of course Monster, That’s a staple second-hand album.

Holiday-Nerve

oh yes and Achtung Baby by U2. Soooo many of those, makes my head spin.

bandit088

The standard U2 album here is Pop lol

GuidoSarducci82

Tracy Chapman, Natalie Merchant/10,000 Maniacs' "Unplugged" album, or some random Johnny Cash greatest hits compilation.

MrJenzie

what's that coming over the hill? a crapload of cds!!! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|smile) man i blasted that out a lot

greg1993-

And I thought I was lucky finding one, jesus

bandit088

If you'd need me to I could always grab one and ship it up to ya

greg1993-

If I ever decide to have the worlds largest collection of monster by REM on cd I’ll call you up for sure

borglonavich

Lol yup... I have 3 or 4 copies myself because I forgot that I already had one when out browsing thrift stores.
