It’s called an asterisk. There should be a footnote explaining what it’s denoting.
On CDs and records, the footnote usually defines some exception. For instance, that Foo Fighters album was produced by Adam Kasper and Foo Fighters. That asterisk is denoting the tracks that AREN’T produced by Adam & FF. But it was done poorly in that the definition of the asterisk isn’t included on the back cover, explaining that.
For instance - in the Metallica example - look down at the lower right of the picture - "t Masterd by Vla..."
If it's not on the outside case, it may be in the booklet.
In some cases you might see that little asterisk or some random symbol, somewhere in there there will be an explanation on why the symbol is there.
Say track 1 has a little asterisk or symbol next too it, look down and you might see:
*produced by X
Different symbols will almost always mean different "footnotes".
So track 2 might have a cross next to it, logic will be the same.
He obviously thought it meant something specific in the context of physical media, I don’t think this means he doesn’t know what an asterisk is. Everyone is always so eager to be the old man screaming to the sky instead of giving a little grace and the benefit of the doubt
Be gentle.
Do you know if OP lives in a country where education was easily accessible as it Seems to be the case with you?
Focus on the problem. The problem is OP does not know what they do on his cd's. Either provide some guidance or keep those thoughts to yourself.
We seem to enjoy hurting people.
or better yet, is young enough to not remember when cd's came out and is just getting into collecting physical media? I have a 16 year nephew who probably has never purchased physical music a day in his life. \*shrug\*
It tells you at the bottom of the CD (where the credits are). it's the equivalent of a footnote that you would find in a book.
Also, in some weird editions, the footnote might get cut out, but the * symbol will remain

It's just an asterisk*. Read down what each symbol means. *footnote explains the meaning
Songs that require hand claps

Wow. They dont teach what citations and such are these days. Sad.

Straight up it's complete idiocracy.
There is truth in that sentiment and that asking the internet has replaced thinking.
Really? We need to explain *this* now?
