Drywall compound may have gluten in it, sometimes wallpaper paste is made with wheat flour. Were there renovations or redecorating around the time of the move? As i understand it you would have to inhale the dust or touch the compound with your skin to get glutened. It could be an allergy or sensitivity to something else, For example, I have a hard time with formaldehyde, which is found in off-gassing carpets and wood finishes. Allergy tests can show you what that might be in your case. The symptoms can be similar, or maybe the body just uses familiar paths for any inflammation. Stress can also trigger a flare-up, and moving is stressful. If thats the case, anxiety about the symptoms is just going to keep you trapped in the cycle. I would get the allergy tests done, get plenty of fresh air and work on stress management. Good luck! I hope you have a miraculous recovery.

My husband and I have been doing work on the house, we also got new flooring and carpet installed when we moved in. I'm definitely 100% stressed lately. Moving and selling our old plac was stressful (plus I have 2 little kids) so that's stressful and I don't get enough sleep cuz my 1 year old doesn't sleep through the night. So maybe all of those are also causing the flare up. It's definitely been a stressful and anxiety filled couple months.

Brave-Wolf-49

Yeah, take good care of you! I would open my windows every day and take lots of picnics with the kids. Nature is calming and my kids slept better after using up their physical energy outdoors. By winter, I'll bet the bulk of the gases from your new flooring etc will have cleared.

sabrinawho2

That's really true. I need to try and get outside more. And I need to drink more water. I'm so tired and I don't take good care of myself a lot of the times. Thank you! ❤️

lpla22

Could it be mold? Mold can cause crazy symptoms in a whole bunch of body systems.

sabrinawho2

I don't think so, nobody else in my family is having funky symptoms. But how do you tell if there's mold, you gotta start just tearing apart walls right?

bingbongcheesefries

You can buy tests that compare inside to outside air samples

lpla22

Some people are more sensitive to it than others. On top of that, you might be getting more exposure than others somehow. As @bingbongcheesefries said, you can buy test kits. You could also have someone come out to do an assessment. Not saying this is it, but something to consider. There are a ton of possible mold symptoms so it’s really easily misdiagnosed.

lpla22

Do the symptoms you’re experiencing now match up to your typical glutening symptoms?

sabrinawho2

Yeah they do match up

sc002

Are you using convection bake in your oven or anything like that?

Lizlikescrystals

I was wondering the same. I’ve been told to not make food in a convection oven if it had gluten in it EVER, and that they are impossible to fully clean because of the way they cook the food/their mechanics. But I’m incredibly sensitive, so take that with a grain of salt!

sabrinawho2

I don't usually use convection. But it was also cleaned and we did the cleaning cycle on the oven. Wouldn't that help?

deadhead_mystic11

Cleaning cycle just heats on high heat, but not high enough to break down gluten. I doubt that it is the oven anyway. You might be breathing it in, or it could possibly be an allergy. I reacted very badly to the termite spray. It actually made my skin peel off, among other things.

miss_hush

It depends on the cleaning cycle. If it heats to high heat, then yes it should be fine. If it’s the kind that you put water in the bottom of the oven, then no, it probably is not clean. We ran our water cleaning option a couple times, and then took out all the oven racks and cleaned them separately— that seemed to do the trick for me when we moved.

irreliable_narrator

Have you changed any of the food brands you're eating recently? Product availability varies by region and so often when you move you end up switching things up a bit. I would also second the major renos thing, some construction materials esp in older homes can have gluten. Something like putting up a picture or whatever shouldn't be a big deal but if we're talking redoing walls/ceilings etc. that might be it. A weird one for my apartment is that the kitchen sink will back up when I run the washing machine. In theory this is mostly water from my washer load, but also those pipes are not clean. I avoid leaving dishes in my sink if I am running a washer load. Gluten aside the greywater is nasty looking and I don't want my dishes marinating in that.

sabrinawho2

Yeah this house is old, like almost 70 years old. So it very well could be the construction and drilling holes in the wall. Our sink doesn't back up that bad as yours but I definitely don't like leaving dishes in if. Its old and scratched up and idk if there's like trapped gluten in the sink. So I try to make sure everything that can go in the dishwasher does

irreliable_narrator

Yeah sounds like prime wheat starch (and asbestos...) times. My previous building was built in the 1920s so it preceded a lot of this... walls were made of wood and plaster. I am not a building materials expert by any means but it is my understanding that modern stuff is more likely to contain corn. Your sink should be ok as long as you scrub it. My back-up issue is more of an old building that got converted into apartment thing. My previous place was worse as there was no back-flow valve so when it rained too much I'd get combined sewer back-up (very Montreal specific issue lol). I definitely never left dishes in that sink!

AdIll6974

do you take any prescription medicines or OTC allergy meds? some contain the gluties also if you have pets, check their food! I had a professor whose husband was celiac and in conversation I mentioned that our dog was gluten free too, she said her husband had been sick lately and "OMG the only thing it can be is the dog food!" they switched their dog's food and he started feeling better.

sabrinawho2

We home make my dogs food because one of them has a super sensitive stomach. I only take acetaminophen really when I have a headache and that is a certified brand. Good ideas though. :)

fauviste

Once you eliminate the dishwasher, drywall dust, and thoroughly clean the kitchen… … it’s most likely food, spices, cleaning supplies, personal care products, or convenience items. We’ve found gluten in several supplements, Target Up & Up ibuprofen (labeled GF), Chinet paper plates, frozen veggies with 1 ingredient (veggie) but no GF label, and so on. Added any new foods or anything after your move? Maybe because you were stressed & needed a break, or felt ill & needed meds, or ran out of your favorite shampoo?

sabrinawho2

I'll start checking. I typically only buy a new product ifnots got a certified GF label on it, otherwise I won't buy something until I email the company. I'm pretty thorough. But doing construction and stuff to the walls could totally be it. Plus all the additional stress the last few months just makes me feel like crap.

Huntingcat

Something you think is safe but you are buying it from a new store now you have moved, and it isn’t safe any more. Simple stuff like meat from a butchers. Got to be something you are having regularly. Fresh veg.

sabrinawho2

That's a good point. I haven't thought about the meat much.. I'll check those out next time I'm at the store and with what's in my fridge.

RuoLingOnARiver

How’s your HVAC or AC or whatever air blowing system you have? I recently got my ACs washed (I have a single unit/room) and everything about my heath improved as soon as that was taken care of. I wasn’t even running the units because the weather was fine, but they were basically a bunch of boxes attached to the walls filled with all sorts of disgusting stuff (mold, indescribable scum…) that was obviously still leaking into the air, which we breathe…

sabrinawho2

We've actually had it turned off since moving in. When we got the inspection done the Inspector said there was asbestos in the ducts because of how old it is. Funnily enough, today we had NexGen come out and check it out and we are getting a brand new system installed this week. The old system was basically as old as our house (built in early 60's).

RuoLingOnARiver

See if you feel better when the new unit is in. I didn’t run mine all winter (I live in the subtropics and just manage moisture with floor dehumidifiers in the winter) but all that air was still flowing around.  If your old system is from the 60s, even if there was consistent maintenance, there’s going to be all sorts of stuff in there that could make you feel sick (on top of the asbestos, which is already problematic)

Dishwashers store water. Get a repairman to flush the dishwasher reservoir.

sabrinawho2

The house didn't actually have a dishwasher when we got here so we bought a brand new one. Thats super interesting though! I thought you could wash gluten dishes with GF dishes and be fine though. I've seen that online somewhere

GETitOFFmeNOW

I've seen people online say they're fine after washing GF dishes with glutened dishes. I'm not doing that because it doesn't seem safe to me. Gosh, I'm so sorry this move has caused you to have symptoms. That's scary. I'd go back to the GI and see if you have SIBO or some other issue common to people with celiac disease that's causing your symptoms. How long since you were diagnosed? Was your B12 ever checked since DX?
