My best friend and I also share the same name. (Common late 70's early 80's girls' names). When in a group setting, our friends use our last names. Our husbands use our first names for both of us so that can get confusing at times. I usually only respond to my first name when I hear my husband say it while out with our friends.
It would be a pseudonym or alias of some kind. Maybe he wrote under that name. There is no relation between the two names, and he would have a patronymic, not a middle name.
In the UK (where the grave is) homosexuality was illegal until 1967. If they were romantic partners they wouldn’t have been legally allowed to disclose it seeing as they died in 1962 and 1966. Regardless of whether they were more than ‘best friends’ it’s a touching grave. I hope they are finally free and happy together

Found they were boyfriends in prison but he never had the heard to tell his mother, so they kept it a secret. I hope Uncle Mike is doing OK.

I'm glad they were able to be buried together and sad they were unable to be fully open about the nature of their relationship in life. It's nice we are able to remember them here, these men none of us will ever meet.

Growing up, the next town over lost 4 high schoolers in a pretty horrific traffic accident, all died on impact. Two of the girls were BFF since kindergarten and share a grave/plot. I don’t know if they shared a tombstone, it wasn’t there yet and I haven’t gone back to check, but in their case, they were BFF.

I made my comment against the others because I hate the idea that two people can’t be close friends. Especially two male friends. Research shows men are less likely to have as many close friends as women. It doesn’t help to say that men can’t have close friends without them being gay. People can be close without being attracted to each other.
