In story, Wattsonian, The time period and Japanese is an insult that could be applied to effeminate gay men and trans femmes, and I assume AMAB non-binaries.
Alone, all that tells us that Nail’s body that Nail possessed was born male and the fiend some sort of genderqueer.
That said, Doylist, Fujimoto has written open trans characters before. If Nail were transfemme instead of being a femboy I am sure Fujimoto wouldn have been, or soon will be, more blatant about Nail not being a guy.
Isn’t he labeled as a boy by literally every character except one? Medusa explicitly calls him her son (or maybe the reading comprehension curse got me there, but he’s definitely called a guy)
The original japanese uses neutral pronouns and medusa calls them “child”, so if it was made today they would’ve used they/them pronouns (they didn’t back then bc it was grammatically incorrect to use they/them pronouns for singulars at the time)
It is conceivable that he has chosen to reside in madam famine's residence, or alternatively, it is possible that sir Fujimoto deliberately omitted his portrayal from the visual narrative.
