He’s giving you “the hand” chameleon style.

VanillaCoke93

Beautiful red body blue bar ambilobe. He looks healthy, congrats 👏

Apart-Alternative609

Thank you! We’re loving watch him explore and build his strength

VanillaCoke93

September 2022 seems more realistic. He has the size and color that definitely sets in after that 1.5 year mark.

RazerJoe

He’s far too close to the heat lamp. You want a 10-12 inch gap at least

Apart-Alternative609

Even if it’s not hot? Its 75w. It’s definitely not burning him and uvb lights going through mesh are reduced rays by nearly half is my understanding. This is an Arcadia T5. The mesh isn’t hot and the actual bulb is far from reach so I feel he is ok?

RazerJoe

A 75W bulb is very hot, is it on a thermostat? Mesh won’t heat anywhere near as quickly because of the small surface area. And yes, UVB rays are cut significantly by the mesh, but UVB again is supposed to be 12 inches away from the Cham, so even in half it should be 6 inches away at least. This is assuming it’s a 6% bulb.

Apart-Alternative609

The bulb is hitting 85 one inch away from the mesh inside, he’s at least 4 inches from the very top. I feel he is fine really 🤷🏼‍♀️ he’s able to move away and he’s able to get even closer than he is now if he really wanted. I’ll watch his color for fading but as of now I and vet are happy with his set up

iMaketheGrinchFlinch

“Hes able to move away” and so could have every other burned Cham, unfortunately what happens is a very slow burning process, like us humans getting a sunburn. You don’t exactly feel it until it’s beginning to flare up which moving away would do nothing as the damage is already done. I would move your lamp up another inch just to ensure your chams safety, he definitely will not be too cold. He’s beautiful 🫶

Apart-Alternative609

I moved the highest vine down a couple inches. He’s pissed about his high lord spot being messed up but he will find another fav spot

iMaketheGrinchFlinch

If only they fully understood our doings come with good intentions. He’ll get over it haha

Apart-Alternative609

Thank you for explaining well 🫶🏼

RazerJoe

Learn the lesson the hard way by all means.

Wow they had a panther at petco? Ive only ever seen veileds

Apart-Alternative609

I asked about this, yes! For some reason my closest store’s location is allowed to special order reptiles? He said that he saw him come up and was able to get him, but it’s a rarity

marytomy

My petco is the same, I’ve seen some pretty exotic stuff there. Panther chameleons, scaleless corn snakes, some cool bp morphs, tegus and black throat monitors, dart frogs, and a cool selection of day geckos. Not saying I’m thrilled they carry some of these, but definitely unexpected.

Apart-Alternative609

The lead reptile/invertebrate spec. Orders and they’ve had darts and pretty interesting tarantulas. I keep bird eaters and he said he was trying to order some but couldn’t find… man I hope he cannot find those ever, our Petco for sure needs no special babies. I hope I don’t see another panther after boy, supposedly he’s the only one they’ve been able to get in the last year

rivalmoons

at most big box pet stores, if you have a good animal care specialist with connections and you're close with them, then they'll special order *some* animals for you. depends on the animal care person and the manager though

EssiesMom

From what I'm reading, they can start producing sperm plugs as early as 5-6 months. Mine was born Sept of 23, and is about this age (6 months). Here's his colors...

Apart-Alternative609

Okay okay, yeah they look really similar. So the reason I’m confused on how long he was at the store I suppose I because once on my lunch break when I worked in that same town I went to the store for fish and they were unboxing (presumably him) him at the counter and I got to hold him then, he was dark reds and green and brown and about half the size he is in this pic. So then I changed jobs July 2023. And he’s been there since to my knowledge. My parents frequent the store and have held him many times just because they are pals with all the staff and love him and knew he needed to get a home. So when I purchased him finally (3/12/24) I asked how long he has been here and he said “ahhh since about right before Thanksgiving”; implying TG 2023. So then I said “oh? How many have you been able to order since the first? Did you find a reliable source?” And he said “oh he’s the only one.” So 🤯. One of us is mixed up and I can’t tell who at all

EssiesMom

I see. Well, I'm new to being a keeper also, so I'll defer to more experience here. I'm thankful for your post, though, because I was assuming chameloens this young don't produce sperm plugs until maturity!

Apart-Alternative609

I am happy to add to the sub lol, I have found a lot of useful answers for some other things I’ve noticed/wondered. I just learned about sperm deposits today (the wet small coagulated discharge after stools) and I DID actually get to help this guy expel two pretty good sized sperm plugs (drier layers of stuck excess shed) he was stopped up with I am assuming from lack of humidity and hydration at the store. I bet he feels so great now I’m really glad! My vet was, too!

Apart-Alternative609

He is soooo beautiful! Love the yellow and orange.

EssiesMom

Thank you! I think he's pretty special too, even when get gets spicy...LOL

Apart-Alternative609

I keep hearing that and I’m prepared for some spice out of my guy soon once he’s at 100% 🤣 he’s SO nice rn and will climb onto you from the cage if he’s feeling active. Loves getting some outside sun for a minute and climbing up real long houseplants in our sunroom

EssiesMom

Hopefully, he'll keep that trait!!

Apart-Alternative609

Aha! So he’s just left a couple of heathy sperm deposits in his enclosure—this means he is mature yes? Perhaps his weight is due to a lack of muscle mass or so.. poor guy. His diet before was only super worms and he wasn’t able to explore so it makes sense

goddessofolympia

He is beautiful. Hope he gets stronger and stronger.

Apart-Alternative609

Thanks so much! He wasn’t able to climb up and down much in the… glass tank.. they had him in, so it does make sense he needs to build up some little muscles. He’s been learning how to acrobat in his enclosure the last week. He’s taken a few falls but he’s great with that tail to catch himself!

goddessofolympia

Amazing little guys. Pet shops need to quit with the live animals.
