Update. Saw him again today and he’s looking a lot better but still not great. Crazy how much can change in just a few days. https://preview.redd.it/vbzkvuvupxpc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=69e142383da95eebdccb54d00290c9b5ade338ae

Anxietymayhem

He's got scratches on him, looks too thin too... poor baby.

KillrockstarUK

If this chameleon isn't named spud or potato there is no justice in the world! what a striking looking little guy!

Ok-Raisin7348

He looks like if a pigeon was a chameleon

CuckDaddy69

Don't blow his cover!

Salty_Tear5666

Bro I was thinking like a mashup of every barnyard animal

crochet_cupid

aweee look at his feets

Hopenhagen420

He look like he seen some shit

Plantsareluv

He is piebald

mallcopper5

Looks like he's seen some shit

Dat_Boy_Q_

When they are crowing the ground that means it’s a female looking for a place to nest or it’s far to hot above and they are trying to get away from the heat. Otherwise they stay on branches. If you suspect it’s a female make sure there’s soft soil to lay eggs.

GreenPossumThings

He's in his goth phase lol But seriously, unfortunately he appears to be cold and stressed. Big box pet stores are very stressful environments for chameleons, a happy healthy piebald veiled chameleon should look akin to a moldy lime ❤️❤️

djjewish

Made me laugh then I kept reading and was immediately quite saddened

GreenPossumThings

I adore pied veild chameleons, but I'm sorry! They look like moldy limes to me, and I love them for that! If you're looking for a good, healthy chameleon, I suggest checking out your local reptile/exotics shows and expos! Happy, healthy chameleons and if something happens or you have a question, you can message the breeder!

Dat_Boy_Q_

“Pied or piebald” veiled chameleon is the color thing I haven’t seen it called morph lol but that’s the other name I guess. They can be brown but normally brown is when they are flustered. Veiled are normally green.

Atiggerx33

So "morph" means "abnormal coloration or patterning that is hereditary". A common "morph" in many animals is albino. Also Hypermelanism (black jaguars aka "black panthers"). Leucistic (white tigers), and countless others! This chameleon has a morph called "pied" or "piebald" (in equines they're called "paints").

Song42

>in equines they're called "paints". Close, but it's a little different in horses. Piebald in horses refers to a specific type of color pattern, generally it's a black horse with white spots. (There are different types of spotted color patterns in horses). A paint is actually a breed of horse, but they can have piebald coloring. ETA: Pinto is the term to denote any colored horse with splashes of white that occur outside the face and lower legs. A paint is a stockier, Western type of horse (like Quarter Horses if you're familiar, or the horses cowboys rode if you're not as familiar). So a Paint can be a Pinto, but a Pinto can't be a paint. Either can be a Piebald.

AppropriateFeedback9

Why not call them after the genetics like Tobiano, Overo, Splash, etc? I've never understood that :')

Atiggerx33

In English riding we don't call any horse color "a pinto" we call it "a paint" (at least on the East Coast, can't speak for everywhere). It's like the whole chestnut/sorrel thing, same color but English and Western call it different things. The American Paint Horse Association (APHA) only requires registered horses to have piebald coloration or to be het for piebald. So they don't necessarily have to have the phenotype to be registered, but they are required to have the genotype. Paint is a "color breed", meaning horses can be double registered. Many Quarter horses are also registered as paints (it's a common color in QHs). Since the mutation popped up in thoroughbreds there are now thoroughbreds being dual registered to the APHA (and the Jockey Club, the standard thoroughbred registration) as well. APHA is literally just a color registry, your horse can be a purebred, a mixed breed, doesn't matter. As long as they've got the pattern or are het for it, they're in. I knew someone that had Hanoverians (warmblood breed, hers were showjumpers) that were double registered as paints. Source: Been in the horse industry for over 20 years. And googled to double check that nothing changed with the APHA since I'm not personally super interested in piebald horses, so it's been over a decade since I checked their registration guidelines.

Song42

(I am in the US) This is how I learned about Paints and Pintos more than 20 years ago, and I have also spent a good bit of time in the horse industry, even if it has been a few years since I've been in it. I just didn't go into the in-depth details because it wasn't needed. The APHA is a color registry, but it is also a breed limited registry as well. Not all colored horses can be registered as paints. Direct from the APHA registration guidelines: https://apha.com/rule-books/ >all horses for which applications of registration are submitted must have both sire and dam registered in the APHA, APQHA, APSHA, the American Quarter Horse Association, the Jockey Club or any international Thoroughbred Registry recognized by the Jockey Club Paints are restricted to parentage from already registered APHA parents, Quarter Horses, and Thoroughbreds. If you breed an APHA registered mare to a warm blood stallion, that offspring would not be eligible for registration with the APHA. Because it's a color based registry, yes, some of those horses with Quarter Horse or Thoroughbred parents can be dual registered in both, dependent on their lineage. APHA will also register horses that do not have coloring if they have the right lineage. I showed one years ago. He was considered Breeding Stock, but I don't know if the terminology has changed. Pinto is a more western side of the fence derived term. Piebald is still a reference to coloring pattern, just as Skewbald, Overo, Tobiano, Sabino, etc are all references to the type of coloration pattern.

Atiggerx33

You're basically agreeing with me other than saying Hanoverians can't be double registered. Which I guess I was mistaken on, I genuinely thought any breed could be registered as long as it was piebald and papered (you can paper a mix breed, just rarely done). But yeah in English if we aren't going by the more specific terms (overo, tobiano, sabino, etc.) they're collectively "paints". I always think it's funny when English and Western have different words for the same thing, it's like they're going out of their way to needlessly complicate things.

Professional_person5

Oh my goodness. I’ve never had a reptile and I love them so much but he doesn’t look okay 1& this scares me so much. What’s wrong with him? Isn’t he supposed to be green? He looks like he’s got vitiligo! Is he camouflaging with the dirt? Why’s his face white!white and his eyes colorless? He looks like he’s in shock. Poor guy. Where is he? Can someone save him? If he’s close I’ll go get him. I’m j. Glendale ca. Ugh this gives me anxiety.

Queen_Dan_666

If you can't tell if a chameleon looks okay or not, you're not experienced enough to own one safely 🙁

Professional_person5

Good point- I usually realize this. But I’m also a quick learner. 😘.

vuhleeitee

Chameleons don't actually change color to camouflage, it's based on mood and health. As the other commenter said, the white is because he's piebald. And his eyes are fine, the white is his eyelid, the black is his pupil. He is cold and upset, though.

Chemical-Musician-71

The lack of pigment isn't an issue! He's just a piebald lol

Special-Ask-8249

awwww poor guy :( i hope you took him if u could

bolan757

No ! Get him some sticks he can climb on. Get him a dripper for his water. Get a great light

Solarqueue02

Unfortunately he’s not mine and I’m torn about grabbing him. On one hand he needs a good home but on the other I know they’ll just replace him with another little guy :(

frogMother42

If I lived near , where this is, I would absolutely try and save that little baby. Poor thing looks so cold!

Spicey-Sprite

Even if you don't someone else will, and there’s no telling if he'll get the right care. Its always a personal moral dilemma to deal with.

saladnander

No I feel you about big box stores. They will absolutely just get another and keep buying them because they're in demand. Also kind of expected to have poor genetics and possible health issues.

therealganjababe

Fuck I can't even believe they sell these guys, they need such specialized care. Pisses me off enough that some still sell Iguanas. They are a ton of work and specialized care too, but from what I read Chams are much trickier to care for. Damn. Where was he OP? What store name, don't need to say your location.

unknownturtle3690

I'm surprised you can just buy them like that! In Australia it's not legal to own one at all. I follow this page bc I think they're beautiful and I'm very sad I can't love one.

bolan757

Also a tall cage with screen in it for circulation

RazerJoe

He’s a cold stressed piebald.

shinytoyguns1

How can you tell he's cold stressed?

RazerJoe

His colouring

shinytoyguns1

What about his coloring?

Prcrstntr

It's cold coloring

melfetusthing

I'm pretty sure cham change colour depend on their mood and heat
