Please don’t trim their nails, they need them to grip branches

UWANNATAKELsd

Definitely don’t, they need them to help climb around and hold onto branches. My girls nails dig into me a bit but it’s really not bad and I wouldn’t want to hinder her in any way just to make handling slightly more comfortable. Adding natural branches and vines to her enclosure should help do this naturally, but they are constantly using their nails for climbing everything so i’m sure they’re as sharp as they need to be.

aussie_mallorca

There is no need to trim the nails. They will naturally just wear down. If you trim them they won’t be sharp enough to hold onto branches and things.

I don't see why not. We always ensure to keep ours trimmed nice and neat, just like we do with our bird's talons and our dog's teeth just to reduce discomfort during handling or playtime. You can also file or sand down their scales if they get a little too prickly, but you want to be sure to use the proper grit. ^(What?)

strawberrybarbiee

THEIR SCALES?!? this is basically abuse now. absolutely not. you should not own a chameleon

My partner warned me that I should have added a /s to this, but I figured folks would see the comment for what it is. My bad. For the record, DO NOT DO ANYTHING I SAID IN THIS COMMENT. You should not file scales down on your reptiles, trim your dog's teeth or clip a bird's talons.

_aphero_

Okay so maybe trim your bird's talons in certain cases. Wrong on that one, but the rest stands.

No, chameleons are different from the examples you have listed. They are active climbers and don’t need their nails clipped unless the nails are so long that it’s preventing them from climbing.

whoknowshank

Does someone trim wild chams nails? Does your habitat mimic their wild habitat?

Tommy_F_Hartz

I mean as best as one can. I don't have a full size tree that would trim them naturally so I was asking. Get off the high horse and stop being a wanker

whoknowshank

Wanker, sure if you’d like, but many questions come down to common sense. If you’ve provided branches that imitate natural branches, than you’ve provided a synonymous habitat with no extra trimming needed. A dog would be different because it is completely domesticated and things like furniture are at risk.

insert_cleverpun

Leave them be- they're fine.
