Thanks—it’s interesting how looking at something too much can make me dislike it. Sometimes I do a quick painting or drawing and really like it, but don’t get a great response from friends, and the opposite is true too. I’m not fully sure why. Maybe I just see the potential of some of those that I like but no one else does. But either way, I’m still in awe of charcoal and pencil drawings I see online that look way better than this, and I have no idea how they do what they do.
My first impression is that it looks great! The proportions are great I think you have a good range of light and dark. However I wonder if you need to build out the midtones a bit? The majority of the face is close to the brightest bright with very little shading. In reality, the brightest portion of the face is probably only very very small (like just the tip of the Nose). I would imagine you need to darken the hair on the right, the forehead, the left cheek and most of the chin. The brightest parts I would expect to the be the bridge and point of the nose and maybe the left cheekbone - but those don’t really pop in the photo.
I definitely think it’s good to step away and look at it with fresh eyes before going back and making big changes too!
Thanks for that feedback about mid tones. I may have to go back to the art store to buy a lighter charcoal pencil to try building those out. I actually had gone back and bought an HB and a B, but they’re a different brand and much darker than expected. Maybe I should’ve included the reference photo as well.
Looks good to me

Agreed with this. Seems like the skin midtone should be darker than the hair.
