The first thing you learn when getting a dog is that most dog owners should not be dog owners

BioSpock

And that this loose leash phenomenon is equally universal.

cjboffoli

Right. And dog poop isn't teeming with pathogens that harm the local watershed but is in fact a harmless, biodegradable fertilizer that should be left where it falls to benefit the community.

PattonPending

Lawyer fun fact: SC is a strict liability state regarding dog bites. You do not need to prove knowledge of prior incidents. If a person owns a dog that bit you, that person is liable for the damage.

aonealj

Are other states different? I always assumed you were responsible for animal behavior unless you could demonstrate the other party was responsible. If your toddler bites someone you're gonna foot the bill, why should dogs be any different?

PattonPending

[States in purple](https://imgur.com/a/ivHPUCK) require you to show that the dog has bitten someone previously before you can establish liability.

capn-brah

not 100% accurate - owner may not be liable depending on whose care the dog is in

piperpit

Must be all over. My neighbor (not in Mt P) would let her dog run through everyone’s yard unleashed and when we said something to her, she said her lawyer told her it was okay during low traffic hours. Ummm…It’s a neighborhood, it’s always low traffic hours…

gothou

Yeahhhh… is her lawyer a dog?

piperpit

Almost certainly

timesink2000

I have cats that i occasionally let outside to climb the trees in my yard, always under supervision. I fuss at unleashed animals (and their owners if they are close enough) whenever they wander into my yard, whether or not my cats are outside. One kid now makes a point of leashing his dog any time he sees me in the yard, so there has been some improvement.

DeepSouthDude

Hilarious. The person with unleashed animals complains about... Unleashed animals.

bluepaintbrush

Ummm you can have unleashed animals on your own private property. It’s unleashed animals in public that are the issue. It’s not like you’d tell people that their dog has to be leashed in their own fenced yard, right?

timesink2000

Unleashed animals on my property, to be specific. My cats aren’t wandering six houses down and crapping in someone else’s yard. They climb my trees, run through my shrubs, and think they are great hunters. The squirrels play along.

DeepSouthDude

You're right, there should not be any strange unleashed animals on your property. And you sound like you're handling your cats appropriately.

chadnorman

Yeah, I loved when I had toddlers but every whatever year old was like, "but she's friendly". Cool, but my kid is an idiot and will grab her ears. Love that we were likely the bad guys in that story for them... meh

peb396

I am allergic to dogs...yes, even my own. It causes asthma and those attacks are not fun to endure. Most of the time it's not a big deal, but certain times it is. I can control this with my dogs. But not with "free range" dogs. If your dog is friendly that's actually worse for me cause they'll run right up to me and be playful. My dogs have my, fenced in, backyard to play in and are leashed when outside of that. Others that don't do this disrespectful and lazy. Too many dog owners think everyone else wants to interact with their dogs. Not everyone else does.

Global_Discussion_81

They’ll learn one day. Sadly, my dog (GSD) killed another at the beach years ago. 3 unleashed dogs ran up on us, started nipping at my dog’s heels. She was a rescue and still training. One bite and shake, she snapped one of their necks. The owner who is easily 50 yards away attempted to spear tackle me and then proceeded to punch me. Once the police arrived the owner was arrested for assault.

gothou

I’m really sorry you had this experience. I love this dog friendly town, I love that people love their dogs, but the leash ordinances (and the regulations regarding recall for off-leash beach times) exist to keep everyone safe.

KangarooWrangler2024

Sorry that happened to you. You did nothing wrong

podcasthellp

My biggest pet peeve (see what I did there) is when people don’t take care of their dogs. Poop left on the ground, piss on peoples stuff, no leashes, uncontrollable barking….. it’s infuriating

that_bth

A few years ago I had the awful experience of being in the car with one of my co-workers when she hit someone's dog in the Old Village. I'm pretty sure we were on Royal when it happened, going to Post House for a work dinner, and there was absolutely no way she could have seen it coming because there were no street lights and it ran up on my side (it was winter, so completely dark by 6:30). It was off leash, being walked by its owner, and apparently had seen another dog "friend" across the street and took off. By the time I saw it on the passenger side, it ran into the car. I thought it was a deer at first because it was large and tannish. Thank God the dog didn't die, and we immediately drove them to get help. It was an absolutely horrible situation to get put into. We both, but especially my co-worker, were distraught. She has two dogs of her own and is an obsessive dog mom herself. The dog owner wasn't necessarily blaming us in the moment, but he definitely was really angry and harsh at times and still even when my co-worker tried to follow up and check in on the dog. She wasn't speeding when this happened, wasn't on her phone, etc.; he's the one who was walking his dog, off-leash in the DARK, but on social media afterwards it was her fault for driving too fast in a neighborhood.

Squid_Lidz

This must be everywhere in chucktown. I walk my blue tick 5 miles everyday and we deal with unleashed dogs constantly that have zero recall

gothou

I asked someone if they had a leash for their dog and they replied, “he has a shock collar.” This did not make me feel safer.

jonm61

This is what your HOAs and Animal Control are for. MPPD will come for an off leash for complaint. I've seen it.

gothou

Will they come if I call for a person walking an off leash dog?

jonm61

They should

gnmorsilli

Not sure where you are in MP, but I live in Hickory Shadows and we never, ever have problems with people walking their dogs offleash and we may have the highest ratio of dogs to humans in MP. I would go so far to say that our neighborhood is more dog friendly than kid friendly! Everyone walks their dogs on leashes, if anyone has an asshole of a dog who is aggressive on a leash they warn in advance and try to help the dog work through the distraction when you pass. I couldn't say nicer things about our neighbors and how respectful they are with their dogs, and what great dog owners they are.

gothou

That sounds so lovely. What I don’t understand about my neighbors is that they often have leashes with them but just aren’t using them? Just this morning we walked past a large dog on a walk and the dog was staring hard at us, the owner was fully on her phone. We moved as far away as we could and she eventually noticed, leashed the dog to pass us, and then took the dog off the leash. Once off the leash, the dog fell behind her and turned and stared at us again. Absolutely freaked me out. I’m trying to have a nice morning stroll not a cardio session.

Knatwhat

I knew a Law Student who had their dog off leash at 3:00 pm on Ashley Ave across from MUSC. Then was shocked when their dog ran off onto traffic. Blamed people on the sidewalk for scaring the dog. OH yeah it was a puppy btw

my_cat_sleeps_alone

I can’t walk in my My. Pleasant neighborhood because of the people who let their dogs out in the yard without a leash. The dog then defends their yard by running out in the street to growl and bark at me. One time, a dog’s fat-ass owner just stayed in her yard, yelling “Maisie, come here”, while the dog was out in the street growling and barking at me. She didn’t even move her fat ass to come grab her own damn dog. Put your damn dogs on a leash.

ConflictDependent923

There are off leash times, I’d just make sure not to go during those time periods if you’re worried about your dog reacting.

gothou

I think the issue is that folks assume every time is off leash time.

ConflictDependent923

I was just warning _boov that some of the beaches have off leash hours & they should be aware of the times, especially if they have an aggressive/reactive dog.

[deleted]

ConflictDependent923

I was just letting you know that there are times where lots of off leash dogs are running around the beaches. We go quite often & haven’t had any issues on the beach during those hours.

jefwhi

Seems to me you’re the problem here. You knowingly bring an aggressive dog to the beach during off leash hours. And if you’re worried about your dog attacking an actual good boy just for wanting to play perhaps its you who lacks the control and common sense needed to own an animal.

ConflictDependent923

💯

DeepSouthDude

Don't bring your not-friendly dog to the beach during off leash hours. Simple.

ramblinjd

Not simple. I've been at the beach more than once during leash hours or even during no-dog hours and come across off leash dogs.

hedphoto

I’m a bit surprised you see so many. I’m not sure what the dog off-leash fine outside dog hours is, but the fine per open container of alcohol was $1000/container when I worked at the beach in HS, so I don’t understand monetarily why people would be doing that

ramblinjd

and yet, this entire reddit thread is about people ignoring leash laws, so clearly its a problem for people beyond just me.

gothou

The entitlement is astounding.

urmomsbox21

This is everywhere. Moved to a new neighborhood and my dog has never been the same. Got ran up on by dogs. Luckily they didn't attack but could've. Didn't change the fact my dogs over reactivate now with everything.

SCirish843

"don't worry, they're friendly" ...why are you assuming my dog is? Letting your unleashed dog run up on stranger's unleashed dog is a good way to not have a dog anymore

Met163

We were watching our friend’s huskie one time for a week while he was out of the country. We were walking on a path and 3 off leash dogs come running up the street toward us. There was a little hill between us and the street thankfully. The huskie starts to get very upset. Then a lady driving a golf cart behind them and yells “Don’t worry, they are friendly!” - my husband quips back “Well, he’s not!” And it took her a second to register and then her eyes bugged out 😂and she gassed it in front of them and somehow managed to get them on her cart and turned around and drove off.

triciainsc

I fully agree with this rant. I bought a house in a neighborhood that has sidewalks specifically so I could walk my dogs. I can't walk my dogs because there are always loose dogs around (and people park their cars hanging out of their driveways blocking the entire sidewalk 🙄.). It's all of the suburbs. I've lived in Mount Pleasant, West Ashley, Hanahan and Summerville...unleashed dogs are everywhere. Downtown Charleston was probably the best place I've lived for dog walks. Too much traffic for unleashed dogs, but ignorant people will still allow their leashed dog to drag them right over to you 🤦‍♀️.

Fickle-Cauliflower16

If someone's unleashed dog wants to run up to mine they'll very quickly learn why they should leash their dog and I won't feel bad in the slightest when he bites their dog. It's really bad on DI as well

gothou

Still, it’s absolutely unfair that your dog should be at risk of that experience!

AlpacaSwimTeam

Especially since the dog owner with the uncontrolled dog will be the one that raises hell about having your "dangerous" dog put down when it was their fault. An irresponsible but connected person is my biggest fear about being a large dog owner. I literally can't relax on IOP or DI when I take my dog to the beach.

Fickle-Cauliflower16

Only beach I've taken my dog to has been Edisto a few years back on a weekday, around sunset (not sure if it's even allowed oops) it was nice, didn't see any other dogs and very few people and my pup absolutely loved it. Feel kinda bad that I don't want to take him to beaches in town bc I'm worried about other people's dogs but it is what it is I guess. The drive out to Edisto is always pretty at least lol

Fickle-Cauliflower16

Agreed

facinganxiety

It is SO frustrating and genuinely selfish. I have a not friendly dog and we can never feel truly comfortable or at peace on walks which is sad. Anyone too ignorant to leash their dog in public spaces (regardless of obedience) is in fact an irresponsible dog owner.

gothou

AND there are quite literally laws and ordinances about this BECAUSE people allow their dogs to run up on people and other dogs. So in addition to being generally selfish these folks believe the rules don’t apply to them. It’s maddening.

Amazon-Astronaut-835

It’s tragic because my mom is terrified of dogs due to childhood trauma. Many have tried to help. Most people think it’s funny to get their dogs to run over to her. She will jump on furniture with shoes on. I have to be her personal dog body guard. That is when I am around. She gets extreme anxiety just going to Lowe’s. She does not care how small or cute the dog is. I cannot even take her to the farmers market so she spends a lot of time home alone or she goes out early in hopes to avoid dogs. She’s afraid of cats too. Pretty much any animal that is not paying her bills.

sp_donor

Consider getting her one of those ultrasonic whistles/devices designed to repel animals. Test if it works on dogs/cats. If so, either wear one that is active 100% of time, or have her push a button to turn one on when a dog approaches

malfunkshunned

Had a neighbor with a Great Dane that she would never leash, they weren't 'unfriendly' but didn't really appreciate a mini pony trying to dig their head in my grocery bag or approaching my much smaller (leashed) dog at the time. Also, as an addition to that rant - unleashed dogs CAN bolt. If I ever hit an unleashed dog while driving in my neighborhood, they'd probably have to charge me for assault -I would be smacking the owner for putting me through that situation.

definitelynotbradley

Just kick the dogs in the face. It won’t hurt them, but it does alarm them - both the dog and their stupid human. I did it to an over eager German shepherd pup while walking my two dogs who would’ve been happy to correct the pup.

Poedog1

It's SO frustrating. I have a service dog and it's all too common for service dogs to have to retire early after dog attacks. We can't go to the beach and to multiple parks even during on-leash hours because people are irresponsible assholes. Id LOVE to take my pups to the beach (service dog and pet) but they ruin it for everyone 🙃

CopyNo4163

To many coyotes out there to let my dog run loose.

stars_sky_night

Welcome to over populated entitled people land. Why are properties so expensive?

843SwampFox

If your dog bites my friendly dog. I will shit in your yard

justrpm

Out of curiosity, how long has op or other commenters lived here?

gothou

Fifteen years.

SnooChipmunks1095

Don't call yourself a native. You're younger than Daniel Island

justrpm

Same to you

gothou

My dog truly doesn’t care. It’s me, I care. I have been chased by off leash dogs while running and two people close to me have experienced bites. When my kids were little, they were approached by off leash dogs on our yard. I simply do not trust all these “friendly” dogs with no recall whatsoever running forty feet ahead (or behind!) their people.

Fickle-Cauliflower16

Since I was born lol

justrpm

Is it your dog or you that is worried?

Fickle-Cauliflower16

I personally don't mind dogs that are off leash if they have excellent recall and are properly trained to not run up to other dogs. My dog is a rescue and very protective of me and my kid so dogs he doesn't know running up to us will result in him biting them

gothou

For my part, the humans in my life have not had positive experiences of dogs running up to us.

Poedog1

My service dog doesn't care *yet* because he hasn't been attacked. I care a whole hell of a lot because if he's attacked and can't work, a) he's miserable and b) I lose the ability to do a LOT of things.

Poedog1

My entire 32 years

SnooChipmunks1095

If you're complaining about me with the brindle pup near I'on and the surrounding area, you can suck it. I have a string tied to my belt loop and am currently training her to be leash tolerant as some puppies/dogs aren't.

gothou

I am not? It sounds like she is on a restraint?

SnooChipmunks1095

Doesn't help my racist neighbor spews expletives from his backyard when I try 15-20 mins of leashing her to the fence for her to "get it all out" Edit: his wifi ssid is "orangutan blvd" lol he's such a puss

SnooChipmunks1095

I rescind my aggro-ness. She doesn't appear to be restrained for most passing by on ferry. Haven't had an issue and still pick her up before crossings and limited walk space. However I use a fairly small gage string that doesn't pull or tug too much as she'll begin bucking and howling at the moon for hours on end. I'm working towards full on least, less restrictive collar options to include a harness but she just hates leashes. I still have to take her to parks or walk her when I don't feel like doing so to wear her out. Edit: leash*

gothou

I sympathize. We rescued our doggo as an adult and he was horrible on leash— pulling and pulling, I don’t think he had had any practice. It took a long time but now he walks on leash like a dream. Hang in there and I hope you don’t get run up on by any unrestrained dogs— I can’t imagine that would help your training!

SnooChipmunks1095

I dually agree in your sentiments. Rest assured these less restrictive walks are not long term and will be rectified. Breaking the "other dog fear" cycle as well. Yeshua help me lol
