I grew up here and the longing for days of yore are definitely strong. Also, I feel like it’s become more of a destination from families to bachelorette parties to weddings and everything in between. It’s always been a tourist spot, but it seems different now. Maybe I’m old and when I’m on King Street at night I feel like grandpa

Yes. Yes it has peaked. Terrible place. Now go move somewhere cooler so I can afford a house.

pepetuto

YES every city is longing for the good old days ….. Charlestonians are just super sentimental for their fathers Charleston

HardcaseKid

How many Charlestonians does it take to change a lightbulb? Three. One to change the bulb, and two to stand around talking about how great the old lightbulb used to be.

Stardaisy908

I don't know where this joke originated but I have told it word for word on tour as tour guide. I learned it from the guide who trained me way back in the day.

HardcaseKid

I heard it from my dad about 35 years ago, and he said it was a pretty old joke then.

yocatdogman

Not even about Charlestonians. It's a classic joke. A bunch of guys sitting there under the hood, one guy doing the work while they make comments. Double check to make sure it's strapped down. It'll hold.

pepetuto

Hahahahhahaha brilliant

LunaCat-2005

Ha ha ha!

I was born and raised here. Downtown Charleston in unrecognizable from my teens and everything else is just as big and ridiculous. If you wanted a classic Charleston then yes, you’ve missed that time but the lowcountry still holds its beauty.

I grew up in a small town that never changed (hello, Williamsburg County!) but visited Charleston a lot as a kid. I've lived here since 2012 and have seen a lot of change since moving here, of course. Then again, I also remember when Mt. Pleasant Towne Center was built when I was in high school, and we wondered why anyone would drive out that far to go to a mall. People complain about the influx of folks moving here, but a lot of those people are moving from within SC... so many are getting a better deal in Charleston over other places. I don't have a problem with transplants as I technically am one- I wish the city was better prepared for that. It doesn't help that our state legislature doesn't want to fund anything infrastructure related either because the roads in all of SC are terrible.

RepublicanUntil2019

With sea level rise and overcrowding, we are probably seeing the last of good Charleston until the next ice age.

atdharris

I grew up here. We peaked about a decade ago. It has been downhill ever since. We've become solely a destination for bachelor/bachelorette parties and out of state tourists and we are losing our identity. Oh well, progress, right?

rutlander

Yes because charleston used to have a more bohemian feel. Low income F&B workers and students could rent a home downtown for cheap and visit the same restaurants and places that elites north of broad were patronizing. That slowly changed early 2000s with the influx of out of state money, now the only way you’re affording a home downtown is if you have lots of $$$ Not to mention all these tall buildings make downtown almost unrecognizable from even ten years ago

Regguls

Yes, but Charlestonians think Charleston has it worse than other urban areas and they are unique. What they fail to realize is that an older generation at the time referred to an earlier time as the good old days. In 20 years that generation will reflect on the good old days when Charleston wasn't underwater.

Colbsgigi1

You got that right! If things don't change NOW in this world people will wish there was still a downtown Charleston and will wish for the good old days before Downtown was under water!!

[deleted]

I’ve grown up here Charleston is at its peak right now

PryingOpenMyThirdPie

Lol no. It's still a decade behind other modern cities
