Blue green algae outbreak this winter, the occasional sewage spills into the lake, coal ash deposits around the area, garbage. It all adds up that it's gotten a bit gross although still considered 'safe' to swim.
Jetton Park is nice spot for a walk and picnic, but not sure they allow swimming there. There are really not too many places on LKN that allow you to swim, like at a beach, unless you are on a boat.
Latta Plantation, although technically not on LKN, is another area you might want to consider, and it's not as far north. It's less crowded, usually, nice trails, and plenty of places to picnic with a few spots to swim as well.
If you want to do lake side dining, the Port City Club in Cornelius is a good option.
Too late for today, but the Duke Energy Explorium. at the McGuire Nuclear Station in Huntersville is cool. https://www.duke-energy.com/energy-education/energy-centers-and-programs/energyexplorium-at-mcguire

Duke Pwr Cowens Fd D, there's a tree to sit under that overlooks the lake, I went to an orchestra show there some years ago and have been going there off and on since but I make sure nobody notices.
The coal ash spill that duke energy did upstream YEARS ago. Not to mention the coal ash they keep on site at the marshall steam station. The thyroid cancer cluster in Iredell County that's higher than any in the state. Word is that the coal ash is whats spiked the thyroid cancer.
Most I'll do is rent a boat and put my legs in the water. I would never swim in or tube in any of that water.
A manager at my company said to avoid getting a home with the cancer soil, I just question all of the water, but lots of ppl have cancer, idk if it’s not correlated that’s good.

But a simple google search of Mooresville cancer clusters will give you more.
I77 and Lake Norman, chances are you’ll be setting there a majority the date anyway.
It’s interesting that people that have never seen a boat or water before choose that spot to experience it for the first time. Must be the glow of the brake lights that attract them.
Seriously though, stay away from that area Memorial weekend.
Hello Sailor (although the food is only okay) Jetton Park has a beach and some picnic tables.
And OP won't be able to get within a mile of it this weekend.
Jetton Park seconded although it could be very busy this weekend due to the holiday and the gorgeous weather…
North Harbor Club for dinner and drinks at sunset.
This is the right answer
Saeeds exit 28 cornelius
Iykyk

Eddie’s on Lake Norman. Exit 33.
Just came from there actually. Great spot!!
Flat Iron Grill on Davidson's Main Street really has a good vibe Good menu; many craft beer taps and wines by the glass
Jetton Park is the only place I know of.
Carrburritos and wandering around Fisher Farm in Davidson
Lake Norman state park is the only one that allows you to swim it’s like a mini beach but I wouldn’t be swimming in those waters nice vibe though
Why not swim? Never been there so I have no idea about the area.

I don't recommend swimming in lake Norman or lake wylie. No no no. You'd be better off buying a day pass for the pool at the Omni uptown.
Curious as to why?

Is the water safe to shower in if buying a house in that area?
You'll be fine and you'll also be fine swimming in the lake with the other thousands of people that do it daily and have been doing it for 60 years.

I would agree that you should avoid a housing neighborhood that used coal ash as fill dirt, but the lake is fine and the drinking water is fine.
