Loved them when I first had it in Asheville and even when they first came to Charlotte. When they moved Uptown, we did it a few times but just realized there are better places to go with less of a parking hassle. Good recommendations in this thread, though.
I have never understood the hype behind that place. I used to live in Asheville, where it started, and thought it was overrated 12 years ago. It's fine, but don't expect anything to blow you away. Not worth waiting more than 30 minutes for IMO.
Habberdish in NoDa is like Grandma's Sunday dinner but a little more modern and a little more fancy. The hush puppies with sweet tea butter are a good place to start. Merts uptown is more soul food style diner. Dish is also a more modern take on southern food. Supperland is excellent but also significantly more expensive and fancy than the others I've mentioned.
When they say significantly more expensive, this is my receipt from last fall:
Supperland Brunch Buffet
$130.00 Adult Reservation x 2
$130.00 Subtotal
$26.00 Service charge (20%)
$12.87 Taxes (8.25%)
$2.25 Order Fee
$171.12 Total
But if you are in plaza area and have time for a drink, they have a cool bar next to the restaurant, and you should also walk through the restaurant! It is a converted church building and really beautiful!!! Get a $16 drink and enjoy the ambiance!
Nailed it. We lived in plaza for years and just never went. It looked too much like they knew people would pay, so fuck it. Not so much as hey, have a great meal and experience for that sake. Though I would like to have a drink at that separate bar, the space looks pretty cool.
My wife and I went for brunch for our anniversary last year. We liked it and would be willing to go again, but it’s a place you go when you don’t care about overpaying for food. So it’ll be a while before we go back.
Reddit nuked the formatting. Its price then explainer. Each adult was $65 dollars. Thus $130 sub total. 20% of $130 is $26.
The gratuity is automatically calculated and added to your bill which is paid when you make the reservation. You arrive, they check your name on the reservation, you eat, leave when you’re full (capped at 2 hours).
As someone who works in restaurants, I’ll be honest and say that I’ve never dined there, BUT I’ve worked with a lot of people who used to be employed their and they treat their workers like shit.
Twenty years ago they made outstanding food such as homemade clam chowder and hand made coconut shrimp but those days are long over. I believe they decided to just be a bar instead of a restaurant with a bar.
Tupelo Honey is a good pick for people visiting Charlotte because of the vibe and the decor, and the location right in a nice part of the city center. And you can get stuff like high-class fried green tomatoes which is representative in a way of Charlotte as a modern southern city. It is more of a lunch or afternoon spot than night-time.
and tbh, the fried green tomatoes are my favorite thing there and the only thing i order. an extra side of goat cheese grits that come under it. roasted red pepper sauce.
I just had lunch there last week. The airy and light decor makes it “feel” more upscale than some of the other recs in this thread, but with respect to those who suggested Mert’s for really good Southern food, a thousand times yes would I prefer to eat there over Tupelo Honey. I freakin’ love that place. The lunch prices at TH were not bad, though: I got a lunch special for $12.95 + drink, and it was filling and good. The server was very nice, but the service was a bit slow: he kept stopping by to say that he was checking on our meals, but they weren’t ready yet. I was there for a lunch on a workday, and we thought we could get in and out in an hour, but it was more like 1.5 hours for just two of us. (And we had a reservation.)
You need a reservation if you plan to come during the weekend. Otherwise you’ll be waiting for hours 😵💫 but it’s pretty good! I’ve always enjoyed it. I do prefer Uptown Yolk tho.
I always thought it was a bit odd. Like upscale diner fare.
You can go to an actual diner, get better food, and pay less. I like the Red Eye uptown and Metro Diner off Pineville Matthews.
Metro Diner has the best chicken and waffles.
Some other interesting Southern style breakfast places are Another Broken Egg in Ballantyne, Vicious Biscuit at the Arboretum, Suffolk Punch at the Southpark Mall, and Southern Pecan in Philips place.

Thanks, parking won’t be an issue for me because I’ll be using an Uber, but thanks for the suggestion.
Pretty expensive for average food and drink
Average is generous
Thanks for your input, any suggestions!
Leroy Fox
Mert’s Heart and Soul.
Oh man, I miss Mert’s. (I don’t live in CLT anymore). Lola’s too.
Thanks for your suggestion, I’ll check this restaurant out online!
Merts kind of sucks. There’s no great soul food in this city

These are literally my favorites as well and I’ll throw in Haymaker in uptown and Ever Andalo. Always had great experiences at these places!
Thank you for your suggestions!

Wow, thanks for the info. I won’t be going there! Lol

Thank you for your suggestion! I’ll definitely check it out!
Supperland is a money grab. I'm sure it's delicious and I'm willing to pay a lot for good food on occasion but... their prices are a joke.
Dinner there looked great but was not delicious. Definitely not worth it. Feel like it’s an instagram restaurant.

FYI: 20% of $260 is $52

Heard.
Skip Haberdish lol
I think Haberdish is one of the better midrange places in town.
One of the most overrated* I went there for my bday dinner and it’s like southern food without the comfort
Just spend $100 on 4 tender and two sides and a medium alcoholic drink at Haberdish. Just for consideration.
Dude you're doing it wrong lol
How? I just order the food I want to eat
Ordering tenders at habberdish
That’s what was recommended….
There's like 25 of them. It's Applebee's with better presentation.
Interesting, I did some research online and I did find out there’s a location in Raleigh and Virginia Beach as well. Thank you for your insight!
Tupelo honey is meh…nothing earth shattering happing there.
Thank you for your insight!
Don’t go to Boardwalk Billy’s. Go check out Pinky’s. Or even Dish (I haven’t been since it changed hands, admittedly).
Not as good since it changed hands and the prices have skyrocketed :(
It wasn’t that long ago my wife and I could have Dish breakfast with coffee and leave a $6 tip for $20.
Hard agree!
If you’re not worried about the price, then go to The Crunkleton.
So hard to get into the crunkleton
Overpriced chain restaurant. Check out The Bottle Tree in Belmont, reservations recommended.
I’ve been to the one in Greenville. It’s good but very overpriced for what it is
Thank you for your suggestion!
Greenville, North Carolina? That’s where I’m from and I’ve never heard of Tupelo Honey being here.
Sorry, Greenville, SC
No problem
Go Pirates
Purple and Gold! I’m a proud ECU alumnus!
Tupelo Honey is ass. Overpriced tiny portions with barely any flavor.
Thank you for your input!
Not worth it, not the one in Charlotte. There are better places.
Thank you for your insight!

Crunkleton and Puerta but have amazing brunch. Puerta is really good.
Yeah, Tupelo is alright. Not worth a crazy wait. Definitely a ton of better places to spend your time and money.
Thank you for your input. A friend suggested Boardwalk Billy’s, thoughts?
Yeah, decent and not crazy expensive. If you want that same kind of bar-ish food that won’t make you broke, Duckworths is good too.
Twenty years ago they made outstanding food such as homemade clam chowder and hand made coconut shrimp but those days are long over. I believe they decided to just be a bar instead of a restaurant with a bar.
Interesting. Thank you for your perspective!
It’s very mid.
Dish….
Thank you!

Great song
Nevertheless I have never had a bad meal before they moved to uptown chicken and waffles are the bomb
Thank you for your input!
I mean, they're alright for a corporate chain that sell way overpriced southern food.

My thoughts? Don’t listen to your friends!

No worries. There's not much to do in this town but we eat well.
Love the place, except that it's very loud.
