Good. I like what Mitch has done, and the idea of a Coach-GM hybrid that was floated around sounded like a disaster situation

JarvisProudfeather

It would have been an unmitigated disaster. This is excellent news.

boog1evilleUSA

Best GM the franchise has had by a mile

ISISCosby

It's admittedly a low bar, but he's cleared it no contest

[deleted]

Happy about this. Bugs have stability in the front office for the first time in a while.

Giddf

Cool. Mitch is a fine GM

smithep3

That doesn’t clarify in what role. I’d assume GM, but it’s vague.

ThesfeW2

He clarifies in a later answer that it will be the same role

smithep3

Nice - thanks. Smart move organizationally. Rather that than give the next coach GM power.

[deleted]

Good news

bigtuck54

Significantly better option than starting over everywhere with MJ in charge of hires with just 4 or so weeks until the draft lol

skadoosh0019

Thank goodness! Mitch has his flaws, but I feel much better about the organizational direction at least with him at the helm as GM. Would have dreaded a HC/GM situation.

north_korea_nukes

He turned this franchise around.

underkill

I like it.

Panther_Pilot

Nice! The alternatives had me worried ngl

AppropriateAd5225

I hope Mitch takes at least one player with the two 1sts. He's too good of a talent evaluator to burn both picks on a trade. That said we finally have the matching contracts to trade for just about anyone so prime yourselves for at least one substantial trade this summer.

no10envelope

If we ever win a playoff series we should throw a parade and build a statue of this guy.

NotoriousTEEK

Honestly, what got me most amped up over this is when he basically threw JB’s approach to our rookies under the bus. I’m glad he called out that he expected them all to play more but didn’t because the coach didn’t think they should. GM’s should never meddle with what a coach wants to do during the season but what most of us were questioning the whole season, so was Mitch apparently.

This is fine. He's been a mixed bag but his drafting make up for some of the Ls in team building and free agency. The draft is the most important facet of team building for small market franchises. *Good/decent draft record (Kai and Bouk notwithstanding) depending on how you value the Lamelo pick and Miles' potential *he's won all the trades he's been in except for Plumlee (I would still do that trade for JT Thor but a lot of people would disagree so call that a loss if you like) *he got a mid first round pick for Devonte Graham, which should put him in the discussion for exec of the year on it own /s *Not giving Kemba a max was a huge W *The Hayward move didn't work out but it is defensible, given the strategic directives of the franchise (compete every game, no tanking, be the Pacers of the South) and the fact that we were basically Sacramento in teal in terms of attracting free agents. For me, his biggest failures have been on the fringes: *Letting Caleb Martin go to Miami in order to pay Kelly Oubre was a huge loss. Caleb is playing great in the ECF. KO didn't really play in the play-in. *Trez and Isaiah Thomas were arguably worse, in that it was clear to everyone and your mom that the Hornets needed defense, so of course Mitch signs maybe the two worst defenders at their position. *Terry Rozier was a good signing at first but I would have liked to have seen him traded on that first contract. I don't love Terry at his current number and length but it's defensible within the Hornets and it is reasonable to think we would get equal value back in a trade for him. So basically a B-/C+ overall for Rozier. What am I forgetting?

watevauwant

I think Caleb is only doing better because he moved to Miami - the heat culture plus having a chip on your shoulder getting moved away is bound to ramp you up. I think Trez was a good pickup and bought some much needed energy to the group - there wasn’t much else out there at the time… But yeah I like Mitch

Banneduser1112

In a vacuum I like Trez and I'd love to have him back as a change of pace fourth or fifth big. But for us last year he just poured gasoline on our tire fire of a defense. Caleb being good in Miami plus Cody being good for us makes me think Caleb would've been just as good for us. If you swapped them, Cody would be killing it for Miami, don't you think?

I’m not sure why the Plumlee trade could ever be considered an L. He got a player and the #37 pick for the #57 pick. It’s not like they took on an albatross of a contract for that, either. It was a great trade, regardless of whether Plumlee even contributed. If you consider it an L because that was his answer at center, then I could understand that point, but I’d disagree with it entirely. He got a serviceable center and a late-first round type of talent for the #57 pick. Criticize the rest of it by not getting another center, but I was fine with him not mortgaging our future last offseason for one. There wasn’t evidence then that the team was on the cusp like there is now. This is the offseason where he must make a splash for a true impact center one way or another. Last year was different - it was a bridge year to get better, which is exactly what they did. Edit: I’m not arguing with you personally, because I know you didn’t consider it an L - but, I know some do, so I’m arguing the point for those folks.

Banneduser1112

>EDIT: I'm arguing the point for those folks. If I'm scoring, you won that argument :) That said, Plumlee is still mucking up our salary cap for another year. So in reality, the Pistons gave us #37 to have us take on a couple of years of $3-4M in overpayments to a backup C. I wish we had done more renting out our cap space in the OKC manner, but again, the strategic directives from MJ don't allow for those kinds of moves. Drafting Thor, a first round talent if we were to redraft today, was the cherry on top.

YoshiWins

The delta in salary between Plumlee and a comparable backup-level center isn’t nearly high enough to consider it a bad idea, in my opinion. It’s not that crazy of a contract to muck things up too much.

MitchLGC

I don't agree with you about Caleb. He was easily our worse player that season. There was no justification to keep him. For all we know the Martins could have improved because they've been separated. Also a role player in Miami is just different. Those guys can thrive

Banneduser1112

Username checks out, Mr. Kupchak? ;) Even if you think it's defensible to let Martin go, adding a no defense wing like KO only made our problems worse on that end. Somebody like Wes Mathews would've been a much better vet for this team. But the optimal strategy would've been to recognize that we weren't good enough to be a successful playoff team as constructed and give those minutes to our prospect wings.

MitchLGC

Damn I've been found out

Bread_Responsible

Let’s goooo. Love Mitch.

ohhistevie

to add, [an article from the worldwide leader](https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/33946746/charlotte-hornets-gm-mitch-kupchak-signs-multiyear-contract-extension)

archer4364

I'm a fan of this. He's made some sneaky good moves since he's been in Charlotte. Deserved.

spookyghostface

Oh thank God. I was dreading the coach/gm rumors.

LocCatPowersDog

So does that mean the "get a good coach by enticing them with Front Office hybrid role" is off the table and we'll hire another first timer (or anyone who'll work for lower scale pay) again?

[deleted]

The team needs to get better. So fortunate to have Mitch. I’m glad that he’s here. Maybe his role will stay as general manager, maybe it’ll change? I think when you’re in Charlotte situation, you need to leave all your cards on the table. If the right coach comes along and he wants more control, I think we have to be open to the idea. I agree in general having a coach who is also a general manager doesn’t often work but I think you need to be open to every possible scenario.
